I spend a lot (a lot) of time talking about cervical mucus and basal body temperature as the fertile signs that can tell you the most about your fertility and ovulation. Did you know there is another sign that can also give you incredible insight into your fertile window? It's one that I swear by whenever I'm a little confused about what might be happening in my cycle. It's the position of your cervix, which changes significantly throughout your cycle and can really help you to troubleshoot if your mucus or BBT aren't super clear. It's not essential, but can be very helpful. Meet Danielle. She has worked as a nurse practitioner in the US for 10 years. She struggled with amenorrhea, infertility and was told she had PCOS. Being a medical practitioner, Danielle was incredibly frustrated that she “couldn't fix herself” and was eventually diagnosed with hypothalamic amenorrhea. She conceived with IUI but tragically her pregnancy ended at 23 weeks. After this traumatic experience of going through labour but not bringing a baby home, she was determined to learn as much as she could to heal herself. I speak with women all the time who have said to me that their doctor won't investigate potential issues with their fertility until they've been trying to conceive for 12 months with no success; that they need to have had more than 1 miscarriage to be referred to a specialist, to just stop stressing, give it time and it will happen! Even women who are experiencing unsuccessful IVF cycles are usually just booked in for the next one. Women are not getting the support and encouragement they need to feel in control of their fertility. Sadly, women are not routinely taught about preconception care and daily factors that could be impacting their fertility. Many reproductive conditions, many issues with ovulation and your cycle, many of those traditional PMS symptoms associated with having a period that you dread every single month are all related to an imbalance between our hormones. And we can absolutely treat a hormone imbalance. Sometimes a few small changes are enough to have a big impact, sometimes you may need artificial hormones in one form or another to address the issue, sometimes it's harder to treat, but the key is investigating what has caused the imbalance in order to correct it. Ok! I am calling it. It is time we all stop using the word infertility to describe fertility struggles.I work with and speak with so many women who have been trying to conceive with zero success. But these women are not necessarily “infertile”.In this podcast episode, I want to make something really clear. While 1 in 6 couples may struggle to conceive, 1 in 6 couples are NOT infertile.Don't let the label of “infertile” stick unless you have definitive proof!So this is what I recommend instead: Instead of describing yourself as infertile or experiencing infertility, describe yourself as experiencing “sub-fertility”.Be realistic about your timelines. Instead of expecting to get pregnant first try, or panicking when it doesn't happen straight away, understand that on average it takes a healthy couple 6-12 months to get pregnant. Instead of feeling lost, confused and defeated, take it as a sign that while your fertility may not be optimal right now, there are simple changes you CAN make to optimise ovulation and boost your chances of conceiving naturally.Instead of panicking at the prospect of IVF, get informed about your fertile window and ovulation and make sure you have the timing right first! Work through all your conservative options before considering assistance. More often than not when we think about fertility, we immediately start thinking about women. Yes, we are the ones who have menstrual cycles and get pregnant and grow babies, but if it wasn't for male sperm pregnancy would never be possible. And if a couple is struggling to conceive, it's about an even 50-50 split about whether it is a male or female cause. We all know that ovulation occurs about halfway through your menstrual cycle. Definitely not always on day 14 as we have been led to believe, but somewhere around the middle. Right? But what if your cycle is 40 days long? Or 50 or 60? Well, if your cycle is irregular or on the longer side, there's a good chance your body has attempted to ovulate once or twice before it actually released an egg. And sometimes, it's just all too hard and it gives up and decides to try again next month. This is called anovulation, and it happens more commonly than you might think. Getting pregnant is not a one step process, and implantation is the final step where the fertilised egg (now called an embryo) settles itself into the lining of the uterus for a 9 month stay-cation. When you're trying to get pregnant, it's normal to be very aware of your body and notice every tiny change that happens, wondering if it's a sign of pregnancy. The frustrating part is that so many of the early signs of pregnancy and implantation are very similar to PMS, so in this episode I'm breaking down some of the most common signs of implantation that women experience. I'm not currently trying to get pregnant, so why do I care when I'm ovulating? Why would I bother charting and tracking my fertile signs when I have no intention of conceiving? Your fertility is so much more than making babies. It's about eliminating the need for artificial hormones that have their own set of side effects, and relying on your own body to tell you everything you need to know to avoid pregnancy with a natural method of birth control that's equally as effective as the pill! We spend the majority of our lives actively avoiding pregnancy, so when the time finally arrives that you actually want to make a baby, it's important to plan ahead. If you're someone who finds herself saying “I'll get healthy when I'm pregnant”, this episode is for you because you really do need to start making healthy lifestyle changes before you get pregnant – 3 months to be exact. Why 3 months? It takes 90 days for an egg to mature inside the follicles in the ovary before it is released at ovulation. For the boys, it takes 3 months for sperm cells to fully mature. When I look back, I cringe at how little I knew about my body. A xenoestrogen is a type of endocrine disruptor that has an oestrogen-like effect on the body and a significant effect on your fertility.We know that oestrogen is a key hormone for a healthy menstrual cycle, but when xenoestrogens enter our bodies they block oestrogen receptors so they can't do their job.The body thinks there's not enough oestrogen available and begins to produce more. Pre-conception care is not just for women, your baby begins with 50% egg and 50% sperm, so sperm health is equally as important as egg health for fertilisation and development of a healthy baby. It takes three months for sperm to develop and mature before they are capable of fertilising an egg, so preparation should start at least three months before trying to conceive. This can ensure sperm is high quality and viable and gives the best chance of fertilising the egg. Once pregnancy is confirmed, the hard part's over for the man and the woman has to keep up her good habits for another 9 months. So if your man is struggling to stick to healthy habits, remind him it's only for 3 months! But of course, if he sticks with them, there are long-term health benefits too.
