"By age 40, one in five women has dealt with an eating disorder—twice the rate we see by age 21." – Harvard UniversityWhile society often frames eating disorders as a struggle for teenagers, the reality is that women in midlife are increasingly vulnerable. In this episode, Dr. Rachel Pope addresses the "silent epidemic" affecting millions of women as they navigate the convergence of hormonal shifts, body image pressures, and life transitions. As we continue our New Year's series on weight management and GLP-1 medications, Dr. Pope is joined by internationally recognized expert Dr. Lucene Wisniewski. Together, they discuss the thin line between a healthy focus on nutrition and the onset of disordered eating. Why do perimenopause and menopause create a "biological window of risk"? How do we distinguish between "discipline" and "obsession"?Dr. Lucene Wisniewski, PhD, FAED, is a leader in eating disorder treatment and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with nearly 30 years of experience. She provides a compassionate, evidence-based look at how women can protect their mental health while pursuing physical wellness. In this episode, we discuss: The Hormonal Connection: Why the menopause transition is a high-risk period for both relapses and "de novo" (new) eating disorders. Effective vs. Rigid Eating: Moving away from black-and-white "food rules" toward a flexible, social, and balanced relationship with fuel. Red Flags in Midlife: How to identify signs of preoccupation, body checking, and the moralization of food. The "Binge-Restrict" Cycle: Why "not eating" is often the biggest trigger for out-of-control eating. Tracking Apps & Tech: When tools like macro-trackers stop being helpful and start becoming a "life stance." ARFID in Adults: Understanding Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and how it differs from traditional anorexia. Tracking your kids can feel like “good parenting”… until it turns your home into a control room. In this Parents of the Year episode, Andrew and Caroline talk about why location-sharing and constant check-ins often backfire—especially as kids become teens and young adults. They unpack the real driver underneath most tracking habits: adult discomfort with uncertainty. You'll hear how “just nice to know” can quietly turn into stress, distrust, and sneaky workarounds (hello, leaving the phone somewhere “safe”). Along the way, they share what actually keeps teens talking: conversations that aren't about school, letting kids teach you their world (yes, even Formula 1), remembering the “small” details that matter to them, and owning it when you mess up.If you want more openness, less policing, and a relationship your teen actually uses (calls in the car, debriefs after school, mall trips by choice), this one's for you.“Homework” activities for adults (to support kids + teens) 1) The “Not School” Daily Check-In (7 minutes)Once a day, ask one question that has nothing to do with grades, homework, or performance. Keep it light. Prompt ideas: “What was the funniest thing today?” “Who made your day better?” “What's your current obsession?”Resource: print/write a small stack of dinner questions (they mention using a question box). Use index cards or a notes app.2) Let Them Teach You Something (15 minutes, once a week)Pick one of their interests and let them lead. Your job is to be curious, not clever. Easy starters: music playlist tour, game/YouTube trend explainer, sport update, hobby demo.Resource: a shared note called “Things I'm learning from you” where you jot down names, teams, inside jokes, friends, upcoming events.3) The “Remember One Detail” PracticeWhen they mention something that matters to them (a friend issue, a teacher they can't stand, a social moment), write one line somewhere. Bring it up later. Goal: they feel noticed without being managed.Resource: phone note with headings: Friends / School People / Interests / Upcoming.4) Replace Tracking With a Simple Family PlanInstead of location monitoring, agree on a basic rhythm:where you plan to bewhat time you expect to be backwhat to do if plans changeone check-in rule for late nights (short text is enough)Resource: a shared family note or whiteboard titled “Today's Plan.”5) The Clean Apology (30 seconds)When you misread them, embarrass them, overreact, or “torpedo” your partner in front of the kids—own it fast. Script: “I got that wrong. I'm sorry. You didn't deserve that.” No sermon. No courtroom defence.Resource: keep a reminder on your phone lock screen for a week: “Repair beats being right.”Send a textEnjoying the show? Today's episode is a little bit different, because Eoin talks about something that's actually made day-to-day life with Type 1 Diabetes that bit easier, food tracking. If you live with Type 1, you already know that carb counting and logging food can feel overwhelming, tedious, or just another mental load on top of everything else. Eoin has tried plenty of apps over the years, and honestly, most of them either felt too complicated or just didn't fit real life.Recently, he started using a food tracking app called Vida Health, and wanted to share his experience with it; what he likes, what's been genuinely helpful, and how it's made carb counting feel simpler as a whole. This isn't about perfection or tracking every bite forever. It's about having a tool that actually supports you, especially when managing blood sugars day to day.So if you've ever struggled with food tracking, felt burnt out by carb counting, or just want something that feels more intuitive, this episode is for you.As always, be sure to rate, comment, subscribe and share. I get asked all the time about calorie counting apps. What's the “best” one? Honestly, it's not about which app is the most accurate. The best app is the one you'll actually stick with.I've played around with the big names like MyFitnessPal and Chronometer. They both have their pros and cons, different features and different vibes, but the key is making sure you're cross-checking the data and not just blindly trusting it.Then there are the newer AI-driven ones like Carbon and MacroFactor. They're pretty cool because they'll actually adjust your targets for you based on how you're tracking, instead of you having to figure it all out yourself. At the end of the day, my goal isn't to push one app over another. It's to help you find the one that fits you, your lifestyle, your preferences, your level of patience with tracking. Because the “right” app isn't the fanciest or the most high-tech one. It's the one you'll actually use consistently.Time Stamps:00:00 Introduction to Calorie Counting Apps05:18 Chronometer: A Detailed Look10:26 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsClick me for show notes!

In this episode of The Annoyed Adult, Howard tackles three burning (and sometimes stinky) questions. First, should you warn parents your kid is in your class, or just teach like a pro and let them figure it out? Period tracking apps help you track your menstrual cycle, so you know when to expect your period. They're growing in popularity worldwide, with the three most popular ones racking up over 250 million downloads between them. But studies show that some women might also be using them to avoid getting pregnant. One of the apps, Natural Cycles, has been approved in the US to be used as a contraceptive. The company claims it is 93% effective at preventing pregnancies, when used perfectly. So why are more people turning to these apps? Are they safe to use as a contraceptive and what are the risks?Sexologist Rayka Kumru from Turkey explains why these period tracking apps are becoming so popular and the privacy concerns around using them. Canadian born human rights lawyer, Stephanie Case, went viral online when she finished first place in the women's section of the Snowdonia ultra-trail 100km race despite giving birth six months ago and breastfeeding her daughter at aid stations. Stephanie tells Nuala McGovern about her first race as a mother and first competition in three years and why she chose to continue to do the things she loves after becoming a mum.In 2015, 22-year-old Alice Figueiredo took her own life whilst being treated at Goodmayes Hospital, east London. Over the course of her 5 month stay at the mental health unit she attempted suicide on 18 separate occasions. Following a seven-month trial at the Old Bailey, a jury found that not enough was done by the North East London Foundation NHS Trust, or ward manager Benjamin Aninakwa, to prevent Alice from killing herself. Alice's mum, Jane Figueiredo, has spent the last decade fighting to get the case to court. When you sign up for MyFitnessPal, Lose It, or Chronometer, they calculate your calorie needs once and never revisit them, despite the fact that your metabolism constantly adapts to what you eat, how much you weigh, your activity levels, sleep quality, and stress. This episode exposes why traditional tracking apps fail to deliver sustainable results and introduces the missing element: the feedback loop between what you eat and how your body responds. They are "dumb" apps, not "smart" apps.Your metabolism isn't a fixed furnace burning the same amount of fuel day after day—it's a dynamic system that becomes more efficient during calorie restriction and changes as you lose or gain weight. So use the right tool for the job if you want to lose fat and gain muscle!Main Takeaways:Traditional apps like MyFitnessPal, LoseIt, and Cronometer rely on static formulas that don't adapt to your body's changing metabolismYour metabolism constantly shifts due to weight changes, activity levels, stress, sleep, and metabolic adaptationFood tracking itself is valuable for awareness, but without a feedback loop that dynamically adjusts your targets, you'll eventually hit plateausDynamic TDEE calculation analyzes the relationship between your actual calorie intake and weight changes to provide personalized recommendationsA "smart" tracking system becomes more accurate over time as it learns about your unique metabolismEpisode Resources:Try MacroFactor for free with code WITSANDWEIGHTS.Watch my MacroFactor setup tutorialTimestamps: 0:00 - Why most calorie tracking apps are failing you 3:05 - The problem with static TDEE calculations 6:18 - How your metabolism actually adapts over time 11:07 - Specific limitations of popular tracking apps 14:46 - Why you need dynamic "smart" TDEE calculation 21:14 - Implementing an effective tracking strategy 25:19 - How proper tracking changes your behavior 27:29 - Recap and recommendationsSupport the show
