This podcast was created to encourage God's people in the daily pursuit of Him through His word. Each episode will be a very brief spiritual nugget referencing a passage taken from that day’s reading in the M‘Cheyne Bible reading plan.
Episode Summary: In today's episode, we're talking about something deeply personal—the struggle of letting the grind overshadow God's grace and the call back to intimacy with Him. After realizing that my striving had robbed me of peace and intimacy with God, I wiped my plans clean—literally—and replaced them with one word: presence. Join me as I reflect on this journey, share Scripture that's been speaking to me, and invite you to prioritize abiding in God over striving for efficiency. Scripture References: John 15:4-5: “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Key Takeaways: God's priority is intimacy, not efficiency. Striving may lead to burnout, but abiding leads to refreshment and fruitfulness. Sometimes, we need to wipe the whiteboard of our plans clean and let God realign our focus. The call to “be still” is an invitation to trust God's presence and provision, even when we feel overwhelmed. Challenge to You: What would it look like to prioritize God's presence this month? Take some time to reflect on your plans and consider replacing your striving with stillness. Announcement: I'm taking a break from the podcast for the rest of December to focus on abiding in God. I'll be back in January, refreshed and ready to share what God has been teaching me. Watch: https://youtu.be/r8h0I3qt5YU In this episode, we explore how the relentless pursuit of productivity and success can disconnect us from God's presence. Inspired by Jeremiah 17:5-8, we compare the dry, brittle life of self-reliance to the thriving, fruitful life that comes from trusting in God. Reading Plan Passages 1 Chronicles 24- 25 1 Peter 5 Micah 3 Psalm 104 Main Points: The Danger of the Grind: Striving in our own strength leads to exhaustion and spiritual dryness. Trust in God: Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, thriving like a tree planted by water. Moving from Grinding to Flowing: Pause for God's Presence: Practical ways to incorporate stillness with God into daily life. Daily Re-Surrender: Trusting God with your work, dreams, and struggles. Root Yourself in the Word: Staying connected to God through Scripture. A Personal Story: The Ordered Chaos Club journey and lessons on surrendering our "alabaster boxes" to God. Practical Takeaways: Start your day with silence before God. Use a timer to take presence walks or short moments of gratitude. Keep a surrender journal to remind yourself of what you've placed in God's hands. Root yourself in Scripture through meditation, memorization, and music. Reflection Questions: Are you holding onto something so tightly that you're missing God's purpose for it? What would it look like for you to re-surrender your grind to God?
In this episode, we explore Nehemiah 8:10, where the people of Jerusalem, after rebuilding the city walls and hearing God's Word, are encouraged to celebrate rather than grieve. Pastor Fury delves into the meaning of the phrase "The joy of the Lord is your strength" and how it serves as a source of resilience and power. Drawing parallels with Isaiah 58, we see how joy and worship are meant to overflow into acts of compassion and generosity. Pastor Fury shares a personal testimony of experiencing God's joy through generosity, including his kidney donation story, illustrating how serving others brings even more joy. Reading plan Passages for Today: 1 Chronicles 16 James 3 Obadiah 1 Psalm 92-93 Key Takeaways: The joy of the Lord is a deep, unshakable confidence in who God is, not fleeting happiness. God's joy strengthens us, not just for personal resilience but for serving others with love and compassion. Generosity can multiply joy, creating a cycle of giving and receiving in God's kingdom. Call to Action: Spend time in prayer and God's Word, asking Him to fill you with His joy. Look for opportunities to share your time, resources, or encouragement with someone in need. In today's episode, Pastor Fury reflects on the importance of seeing our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ as teammates, not competitors. He shares a recent experience interviewing another creative community leader and the challenge he felt in that moment to avoid a mindset of competition. Drawing on 1 Corinthians 12, Pastor Fury reminds us that we are all part of the same body, each with a unique calling, purpose, and "flavor" to offer. Using the metaphor of God's Kingdom as an ice cream shop with many flavors, he explains that our goal isn't to make our “flavor” stand out, but to help the world fall in love with Jesus. Join us as we dive into this profound reminder of unity and purpose in the Kingdom. Sponsored By: The Ordered Chaos Club for Christ-centered creatives https://orderedchaosclub
The Recipe for Discipleship That Most Get Wrong "You can't microwave discipleshhip. You have to let it cook." In today's episode of Five by the Fire, Pastor Fury dives into the concept of true discipleship, inspired by Paul's words in 2 Timothy 2:1-7. Discipleship is far from a quick-fix approach; it's more like a slow-cooked meal that fills every corner of a life with richness, aroma, and flavor. Join Pastor Fury as he unpacks why genuine transformation requires time, patience, and unwavering commitment. As he explores the analogies of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer, you'll see why discipleship is a call to endure, to invest deeply, and to trust in God's timing. Pastor Fury also shares a story of discipling a young man within his ministry, revealing what “life-on-life” discipleship truly looks like. Listen in for insight on embracing the long road and letting discipleship simmer so it can produce the most flavorful results.
WATCH VIDEO: https://youtu.be/ZLD0bIQyIgg Summary: In this powerful episode of Five by the Fire, Pastor Fury shares a personal story of obedience that led him to donate a kidney to someone in need—an act inspired not by logic, but by love. He connects this journey with the story of Hosea, a prophet whose obedience to God's call demonstrated the depth of God's relentless love for His people. Tune in to discover how our obedience, even in unexpected or illogical ways, can become a living testimony to God's unwavering love. Reading Plan Passages: 2 KINGS 13 2 TIMOTHY 3 HOSEA 5-6 PSALM 64-65 Scripture Focus: Hosea 3:1 - “The Lord said to me, ‘Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods.'” - NIV Bottom Line: Our obedience writes the story of God's relentless love. Episode Highlights: Opening Teaser: Pastor Fury opens with a gripping moment: he's in a hospital bed, about to donate his kidney. This moment of sacrifice, driven by love rather than direct command, sets the stage for exploring how our obedience serves God's greater narrative. Introduction: Setting the theme, Pastor Fury introduces the story of Hosea—a prophet called to demonstrate God's unfailing love through his marriage. Through this story and his own experience, he delves into the idea that our obedience can reveal God's love to the world. Point 1: Obedience That Defies Logic Just as Hosea was called to love Gomer despite her unfaithfulness, Pastor Fury shares that obedience sometimes goes beyond human understanding. Our actions, inspired by God's love, can seem irrational but carry a purpose far beyond what we see. Point 2: Following the Spirit's Leading Reflecting on his kidney donation, Pastor Fury shares how he prayed and trusted God to close the doors if it wasn't His will. When each test came back positive, he realized that love, rather than logic, was guiding him. This obedience allowed him to stand as a testament to God's love in a room of people who didn't know Jesus. Final Takeaway: God's will can often be felt through the Spirit's movement in our hearts. It's about seeking intimacy with Him so that our lives reflect His love, trusting that each act of obedience, however small or illogical, contributes to His narrative of love. https://freedomstorymedia.com/fbtf304 Subscribe, rate, and share this episode to spread the word of God! In this episode of Five by the Fire, Pastor Fury dives into the concept of waiting on God—revealing that waiting doesn't mean passivity but moving in faith while trusting God's guidance. Through personal stories about the founding of the Unshackled Network and the Ordered Chaos Club, Pastor Fury shares how he stepped forward in obedience even without a clear blueprint. God's faithful redirection and confirmation came as he moved forward. Rooted in biblical insights from Proverbs 16:9, Isaiah 30:29, and Psalm 37:5, this episode highlights the importance of humble faith, the willingness to take action, and the assurance that God will guide, confirm, and redirect our steps. Reading Plan Passages: 2 KINGS 5 1 TIMOTHY 2 DANIEL 9 PSALM 51 Key Scriptures: "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." - Proverbs 16:9 (NIV) "And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it,' when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left." - Isaiah 30:21 (NIV) "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will act." - Psalm 37:5 (NIV) Bottom Line: Waiting on God isn't about standing still—it's about stepping forward in faith, trusting that God will guide, confirm, and redirect you as you go. Action Step: Take time to reflect on areas in your life where you've been waiting for a clear sign from God. Ask yourself if He has already given you a sense of direction, and start moving in faith, trusting Him to adjust your course as needed. WATCH VIDEO: https://youtu.be/bD3vLA-nTMc In this episode, we dive into David's story and uncover four key steps to developing unshakeable self-belief through humble faithfulness and trusting God's guidance. Key Takeaway: "If you want the bold confidence to slay your giants, you need the humble faithfulness to feed His sheep." Reading Passages (McCheyne Reading Plan): 1 Kings 3 Ephesians 1 Ezekiel 34 Psalm 22. This powerful message reminds us that the strength to face life's challenges comes from faithfully serving in the roles God has given us and trusting in His past faithfulness. 4 Steps to Developing Unshakeable Self-Belief Remember Whose You Are David's confidence wasn't in himself but in the authority of God. Knowing we are ambassadors of Christ gives us the boldness to face any challenge. Reflect: Are you standing in your own strength, or as an ambassador of the King of Kings? Remember the Mountains You've Crossed David recalled his past victories over lions and bears, evidence of God's faithfulness. Your past victories are proof of God's presence in your life. Reflect: Visit your personal “trophy room” of past victories. How has God already shown up for you? Remember How You Got Over David didn't trust in his own skills but in God's power. Just like a sailboat needs the wind, we need the Spirit of God to carry us forward. Reflect: Are you relying on God's power, or are you trying to go it alone? God Will Be God. You Be You David chose to face Goliath with the tools he had, rejecting Saul's armor. God has uniquely equipped each of us with the tools we need for our battles. Reflect: Are you trying to wear someone else's armor, or are you embracing the gifts and tools God has given you? Reflection Questions Are you tending to your current responsibilities with humble faithfulness, even in the hidden moments? What victories has God brought you through that can fuel your faith for the battle you're facing today? Are you trying to conform to others' expectations, or are you embracing your unique identity and calling? Action Steps Reflect on the "sheep" you're called to serve today and the giants you're currently facing. Take time this week to journal about past victories where God showed up for you. Embrace your unique identity and gifts, resisting the pressure to conform to others' expectations. WATCH VIDEO: https://youtu.be/72R-TjhYGQU In this episode, Pastor Fury delves into the profound impact of trust on our spiritual lives. He explores how misplaced trust can block the flow of God's grace and discusses how we often rely on ourselves, others, or material wealth instead of placing our complete trust in God. Drawing from Ezekiel 29 and other key scriptures, he breaks down four warning signs of misplaced trust and offers practical steps to realign our hearts with God's grace. Whether you're a new believer or a seasoned Christian, this episode will challenge and encourage you to examine where you're placing your trust. Key Takeaway: "When trust is misplaced, God's grace is replaced." Reading Passages (McCheyne Reading Plan): 2 Samuel 22 Galatians 2 Ezekiel 29 Psalm 15 Psalm 16 Ezekiel 29: In this passage, Pharaoh claims, "The Nile is mine; I made it," which reflects a spirit of self-sufficiency and misplaced trust. Pastor Fury uses this as an example of how arrogance and pride can block God's grace in our lives. Pharaoh's downfall is a cautionary tale for us all, reminding us of the dangers of placing our trust in ourselves or worldly things rather than in God. Four Warning Signs of Misplaced Trust: Pride and Arrogance: Reflecting on Proverbs 16:18, Pastor Fury warns of the subtle ways pride can take root in our hearts, causing us to believe we don't need God's grace. Trusting in Human Alliances or Systems: Psalm 146:3 reminds us not to place ultimate trust in people or institutions, which can let us down, leading us to miss out on God's unshakable security. Security in Material Wealth: Jesus' teachings in Matthew 6:19-21 challenge the idea that money or possessions provide true security. Ignoring God's Warnings: Hebrews 3:15 urges us to remain sensitive to God's guidance and not harden our hearts when He warns us through His Word, counsel, or circumstances. Practical Steps to Realign Our Trust with God: Trust in God's Sovereignty: Surrender control and acknowledge that God sees the bigger picture. Practice Daily Dependence on God: Cultivate habits of daily prayer and dependence to keep your trust aligned with Him. Seek God's Kingdom First: Prioritize God's will and values over worldly concerns, aligning your heart with His. Closing Encouragement: Where is your trust today? Are you relying on yourself, others, or material things? God invites you to trust Him fully, and as you do, His grace will flow freely in your life, offering peace, security, and transformation. In this episode, we explore the story of the Israelites circling Jericho in Joshua 6 and how it teaches us that breakthroughs come through consistent, faithful discipline rather than fleeting motivation. Just like the Israelites, we often face challenges where progress is unseen. Yet, God's victory comes not when we feel ready, but when we stay faithful. Reading Plan Passages: 2 Samuel 15 2 Corinthians 8 Ezekiel 22 Psalm 3-4 . Scripture Focus: Joshua 6:15-16 – "On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times." Key Points Covered: Faithful Obedience – Victory comes from discipline and trust in God, not immediate results. Discipline Over Motivation – Discipline sustains you when excitement fades. Trust God's Timing – Breakthrough happens in His time, not ours. Reflect and Respond: What "walls" are you circling? How can you remain faithful even when progress isn't visible? In today's episode, we explore stewardship and fruitfulness in all aspects of life through the lens of the parable of the talents, encouraging listeners to recognize God's ownership.
Daily Scripture Readings: If you're reading along with us, today's McCheyne Reading Plan passages are: Joshua 6 Psalm 135-136 Isaiah 66 Matthew 14 Take 15-20 minutes to read these chapters, then come back and join me. In today's episode, Pastor Fury delves into the story of the woman with the issue of blood from Luke 8:43-48. Exploring themes of faith and attentiveness, he challenges listeners to develop “unreasonable faith” and to see and respond to the needs of those around them, just as Jesus did. Join us as we reflect on the importance of slowing down to truly see and love those in desperate need. Scripture Passage: Luke 8:43-48 Key Takeaways: Unreasonable Faith: The woman with the issue of blood demonstrated an extraordinary, almost unreasonable faith that led to her healing. This kind of faith goes beyond rational thought and is rooted in a deep belief in God's power. Reasonable Faith: Over time, through experiences of God's faithfulness, what starts as unreasonable faith becomes reasonable. Trusting in God's history of faithfulness helps us to step out in faith. Seeing the Unseen: Jesus' ability to see and respond to the needs of the woman amidst a busy crowd teaches us to slow down and notice those who might be silently suffering around us. Personalized Compassion: Jesus personalized his response to the woman, emphasizing the importance of personal and compassionate interactions rather than systematic responses. Reflective Questions: Are there people in your life or community who may be silently suffering? In what ways can you show the love of Jesus in a personal and compassionate manner like Jesus did? Prayer: Father God, we ask for your help. Give us eyes to see those in need, ears to hear them calling, and hearts of compassion to feel their pain. Help us to slow down and respond with your strength and love. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. Bible Focus: 1 Kings 19:11–13 (ESV): 11 And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. 13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” In this episode of Five by the Fire, host Pastor Fury (Armand Sheffi) delves into the crucial topic of hearing completely from God. The discussion centers around the story of Elijah from 1 Kings 19:11-13, exploring how God's voice often comes in unexpected ways. Pastor Fury begins by examining Elijah's journey from a place of power to feeling lost, setting the stage for a powerful encounter with God. Through this biblical account, listeners are encouraged to broaden their understanding of how and where God might speak to them. Two key takeaways emerge from the discussion. First, God's voice isn't always found in spectacular events. Instead, it often comes as a quiet, still, small voice, emphasizing the importance of seeking God in moments of stillness. Second, God can and does speak through unexpected sources, challenging listeners to remain open to hearing God in any space or through anyone. The episode provides practical advice on cultivating a listening heart and developing a mindset that's ready to learn from God in every context. Pastor Fury encourages listeners to be like Elijah, always ready to hear God's voice, even in the most unlikely circumstances. Tired of your growth stalling? Discover the surprising truth even Tom Brady & Serena Williams follow for exponential development. The arrogance to believe we can grow without accountability breeds the same pride that precedes a fall. Welcome to the Five by the Fire Podcast Overview The importance of accountability for continued growth and development, even for elite performers The connection between being a "disciple" and "discipline" - true discipleship requires ongoing training and self-control The pitfalls of thinking you no longer need accountability or can grow alone Examples of elite athletes like Tom Brady, Serena Williams still having coaches/trainers for accountability Scriptural references emphasizing the need for community, togetherness and accountability (Hebrews 12:11, 1 Timothy 4:7-8) Personal motivations behind the Five by the Fire podcast and Ordered Chaos Club blog for daily Scripture engagement Key Quotes: "Where I lack accountability, I soon exhibit a lack of discipline." "The arrogance to believe we can grow without accountability breeds the same pride that precedes a fall." "All discipline seems painful at the moment, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it." (Hebrews 12:11) Call to Action: Identify your "creative craft" that God has called you to Build discipline around that craft through community accountability Understand you never truly "arrive" but can have immeasurable eternal impact as a disciplined disciple Sponsors/Promotions: Freedom Story Media (for small businesses/nonprofits needing media creation) https://FreedomStoryMedia.com Unshackled Network weekly email newsletter: https://unshacklednetwork.org/bible #spiritualgrowth #discipleship #accountability #discipline #biblestudy #christiancreatives #faithbasedcontent #biblicalwisdom #tombrady #serenwilliams #miketyson #muhammadali #eliteathletes #coaches #mentorship #communityoverindividualism #orderedchaosclub #fivebythefire #podcast #blogger #creativecalling #faithfullyleadership #creativediscipline #devotional #scripturemeditation #godlypurpose #eternalperspective #fruitofrighteousness #disciplineddisciples

But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. 4 And the men of David said to him, “Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.'” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul's robe. 5 And afterward David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord's anointed.” 7 So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul.
