Ever wondered how someone achieves success in the stock market? Today on the podcast, I'm joined by Heloise Greeff, the first Female Elite Pro and one of the most popular copied investors on eToro, the world's leading social trading platform. In this episode, she shares with us her approach to investing and the winning strategies that have made her the powerhouse investor she is today.  Heloise's journey to becoming an investment superstar begins with the pocket money budgeting her mother taught her at a young age, as well as some playful exercises in investing. Growing up playing with cars with her older brother, she found herself drawn to study engineering after school and became trained as a mechatronics engineer. This led to her obtaining both an MBA and PHD in machine learning, and has made her the data-obsessed engineer she is today! With this impressive background, Heloise spends time not only researching and publishing novel machine learning algorithms, but consulting some of the world's largest tech companies and exciting startups. So, how does all of this tie in with investing?  Heloise applies her skills in data analysis to navigate the stock market and lead her in her decision-making. The results speak for themselves, with her average return being almost 30%. For context, the S&P 500 clocks in at around 10% on average, making Heloise's success more than a little impressive!  Heloise talks about the concerns she faced around her future pension, which led her to take her first steps into the world of investing. While she's now at the top of her game, it wasn't immediately smooth sailing, and she talks about the regrets she has on certain decisions she made in the early days. This serves as a reminder to those of us starting out that it's a learning curve for everyone, and mistakes are bound to happen.  We discuss the six pillar strategy Heloise has adopted, with an emphasis on the three main ones she calls ‘the basics'. While she focuses strongly on risk management, Heloise also believes in making investment choices based on what makes you ‘uniquely you'. In what areas are your strengths? What gets you excited? Finding out where your passions lie is one secret to developing a strong portfolio.  When it comes to successful investing, there's no magic wand. Heloise emphasises the value of patience and discipline, and shares her tips on how to get started on what can be an exciting, long term journey in the stock market.  So, grab your notepad and pen and get ready to take your investment game up a notch with Heloise's incredible words of wisdom!   This episode is brought to you by eToro, Australia's leading social investing platform with over 30M users worldwide allowing you to explore local & global markets, diversify your investments and copy popular investors strategies! How this dentist built her successful investing portfolio!

Today we have the pleasure of chatting with Marina, a pioneering feminist who challenged societal norms by investing whilst running a business. She embarked on this journey at a time when it was uncommon for women to do so and in this episode, we hear all about Marina's investing history, tips and experiences that have shaped her journey towards financial freedom. Marina's financial story begins with her decision to study dentistry after school, a field that appealed to her as a challenge given it was largely male-dominated at the time. At a time when many women were encouraged to stay home and have babies, she had rather different goals for her life. Marina talks about her longtime desire to become self-employed and the master of her own destiny, leading her to eventually start her own business and take the leap into investing.  Though she admits she didn't know a lot about making investments at the time, Marina talks about the inherent self-confidence and determination she possessed from an early age. We hear about how this drove her to make her first property purchase in her twenties, and the challenges she faced entering the share market in a time before the internet or online brokers.  Calling herself a conservative investor, Marina warns us not to become tied up in fear and greed, two things that we know drive the markets. Instead, she encourages us to start simple, build slowly and be in it for the long game. While investing in the share market can feel daunting for those starting out, Marina reminds us that with today's platforms, it's possible to start out with small amounts and is certainly never too late to begin.  Marina's journey is a great reminder that investing isn't merely about accumulating wealth; it's about taking control of your life and future. She talks about the comfort and financial freedom she's gained, and how her financial independence has afforded her the life she truly desires.  So tune in for some amazing insights on how to level up your knowledge on investing, take charge of your finances and begin to create the life of your dreams!    This episode is brought to you by eToro, Australia's leading social investing platform with over 30M users worldwide allowing you to explore local & global markets, diversify your investments and copy popular investors strategies! On today's episode, I am joined by Dr. Grace Sha, a compelling speaker, author, and the innovative founder of the Mental Wealth Institute. Grace is a high achiever and successful dentist but years ago found herself burning out. Questions of what she was doing and where she was going overwhelmed her and a rocky relationship added to the struggle. She refused to let these challenges define her and began a journey of self-discovery.  When Grace reached the other side of burnout, she decided to use her experience to help others suffering like she had and wrote the book "Mental Wealth, How to Journey From Burnout to Abundance."  In this book, she details her experiences and offers practical advice on identifying burnout and achieving work-life balance. In this conversation, we discuss some of Grace's experiences working with patients with mental health challenges, volunteering in mental institutes, and being in a psych ward. She notes the value of conversations with psychologists and psychiatrists in understanding the reasons behind her actions and the impact they have on her life. We also talk about Grace's journey investing in property. The value of investing this way was instilled in her as a child and she started as soon as she could. Now she's not only a property investor but a property developer. Not wanting other women to be scared of entering the property market, she shares the top lessons she has learned to help you stay confident and informed.  Grace also shares how her perspective on wealth has changed over the years. While many people associate wealth solely with money, Grace highlights that true abundance involves being free to choose the life you live. She stresses that financial freedom is a good first step to living comfortably and fulfilling one's basic needs. Today I'm joined by powerhouse entrepreneur Ruby Lee, who transitioned from working as a corporate accountant to building a successful multi-seven figure coaching business. With a background in finance and a passion for helping others, Ruby has built a global community of coaches and entrepreneurs, teaching them how to build and scale successful businesses with ease and flow.  Ruby's journey from leaving the corporate world to turn her side-hustle into a million dollar business all started with a creative itch. We hear about her desire to feel more fulfilled in her work, and how she overcame her initial self-doubt to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams. She speaks about navigating motherhood while in the midst of growing her business, and the unconventional route she and her husband took to ensure she had every chance of reaching success.  While she was trained as an accountant, Ruby admits that her relationship with money had not always been healthy. She speaks about the internal trauma around money in her family and how this affected her ability to control her own finances. It was only once she began her spiritual quest to seek growth and healing did she unlock the mindset that transformed her completely.  We hear about Ruby's coaching philosophy, being the concept of operating in flow state. She describes it as energetics mastery and understanding how your body wants to work in order to be in flow. Ruby believes that once you become unapologetic about the energetics of your own body, the ability to create boundaries and know when to say yes or no will come naturally.  Ruby takes us through the issue of money blocks, an obstacle she sees her clients often struggle with. She talks about her own history with avoiding her own numbers in the past, and how crucial it is that entrepreneurs develop a deep understanding of their finances. Not only does it provide the clarity needed to grow, but empowers us to take control and know our own worth.  Looking ahead, Ruby sees a future where more business owners embrace the power of flow state and prioritise their well-being. She believes that by aligning their work with their natural rhythms and focusing on self-care, entrepreneurs can build sustainable and fulfilling businesses. Ruby's story is an incredible example of how embracing mindset shifts and developing a healthy relationship with money can unlock entrepreneurs' full potential and create the business and life of their dreams.  I know this conversation will encourage you to find freedom from your own limiting beliefs around money, and I encourage you to tune in and get inspired by Ruby's wisdom on and passion for financial health and expansion.   This episode is brought to you by eToro, Australia's leading social investing platform with over 30M users worldwide allowing you to explore local & global markets, diversify your investments and copy popular investors strategies! In less than 8 years, she has created over $33 million dollars worth of property, built over 66 homes and generated a six figure profit each year. Now she teaches other Aussies the art of small scale property development.   Amanda's story serves as an incredible inspiration for anyone seeking to take control of their financial future and create a life of freedom and abundance through property development. In this episode, Amanda shares her journey into property development, realising that the traditional property investment strategy wasn't actually enabling more freedom, but rather creating more debt and tying her to her job. This realisation is what prompted her to seek alternative solutions and explore the world of property development.   We talk about Amanda's first small scale development project and how this experience taught her the importance of keeping an open mind and having multiple exit strategies for each project.   As a female property developer, Amanda acknowledges that the industry can sometimes be perceived as a boys' club. But, she doesn't let that slow her down. We talk about the importance of building a strong network and how she has surrounded herself with a team of knowledgeable professionals, including a finance broker to secure funding and real estate agent to understand market demands and facilitate sales.    With property development having such a profound impact on her life, Amanda also mentors others to help them achieve financial freedom through property development. She shares an inspiring story of one of her students who had no prior experience in the industry and paid off her mortgage with Amanda's guidance. In this episode, Julie shares her journey from raising two kids on her own on a teaching wage to becoming a thriving property investor.    Julie's journey into property investment began when she received a superannuation statement that revealed she had less than $30,000 in her account. As a single mum, she knew she needed to take action to secure her financial future and provide for her two daughters. Driven by her determination not to end up in poverty, Julie sought the help of an accountant and her gal pal to explore property investment as a way to build wealth.   Since then, Julie has built an impressive investment portfolio and, inspired by her passion for empowering others, launched Australian Property Investment Solutions. Through her business, she helps even more people secure financial strength and independence through property investment. In this episode, Julie shares her story and offers valuable insights for anyone looking to build wealth through property.   One common mistake Julie sees among investors is stopping at one property. She emphasises the importance of having a strategy and a long-term plan, sharing her own experience of buying multiple properties over the years and how each acquisition contributed to her overall wealth.   Affordability challenges are real, especially in desirable locations like Bondi. We're back for another snack size episode with Josh Gilbert from eToro. Today we're diving into questions surrounding the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) which is the main stock exchange in Australia. Josh explains what the ASX is, and the different names for it that you might have heard get thrown around. In simple terms, the ASX is like a marketplace where you can buy and sell shares of publicly traded companies. It's important to note that while the ASX lists some of the biggest and most successful companies we know in Australia, not all are Australian.  We talk about the different ways we can invest in the ASX and why we need to go through a broker to facilitate buying and selling shares. Fiona is the founder of Start My Cleaning Biz, Australia's leading online learning platform for cleaning businesses, teaching aspiring business owners to start and build their own successful cleaning businesses.  In this episode, Fiona shares her origin story, growing up in housing commission with a mother working the night shift to make ends meet. She talks about the messages she was taught about money as a child and the scarcity mindset she brought into her own life. Fiona shares how money is the manifestation of your mental health and what you believe about your capabilities and limitations.  Fiona's first cleaning business seemed to be thriving, however, due to overspending and poor business practices, that business went into bankruptcy. We talk about the lessons Fiona learned from this experience and her redemption story starting another business that has not only created wealth for her but equipped so many other women to become financially stable. MP Allegra Spender explains what the Federal Budget is

We are so lucky to be bringing you Allegra Spender, the independent MP from Wentworth, NSW. Allegra previously worked as a managing director both in business and in not-for-profit organisations. She was fed up with the lack of action on climate change, missing integrity in politics, and the lack of women so she decided to run as an independent MP and start driving real change.    Allegra describes her role as an MP as two jobs: the one that's in Canberra, reviewing and developing policy and legislation, and the one that is in the community. Her constituents come and see her about a whole range of issues, including the NDIS, visa issues and accessing home care for their parents. She focuses her attention on the important issues faced by her community and works incredibly hard to help them navigate the federal government.    Feeling confused about the Federal Budget?   The Federal Budget is effectively how the government spends its money. The Treasurer of the day (currently Jim Chalmers) details what they plan to spend the nation's money on, how much they estimate will be spent in the following three years and the budget's priorities. Broadly, Allegra believes the current federal budget is quite sensible but could have been more ambitious.    Listen in as Allegra takes us through the current budget and how it benefits women in our community through increased childcare funding, supporting single-parent families with increased payments and age limits, increasing parental leave pay, and increasing support for those fleeing domestic violence.   Allegra shares her mother's advice encouraging her to always be financially independent as a woman because it grants freedom. The future of politics looks brighter with women like Allegra Spender representing our communities and working on the biggest issues facing our country with respect and collaboration - and less ego!  CONNECT WITH ALLEGRA SPENDER Website:  https://www.allegraspender.com.au/  CONNECT WITH LADIES FINANCE CLUB Join our free facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat   Website: https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Josh breaks things down into simple terms to help us understand exactly what inflation is and the role that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) plays in managing inflation in Australia. He explains what causes inflation in the first place and how the flow on effect leads to the rise of interest rates we're seeing today.  Right now, inflation is a lot higher than where we want it to be. Josh explains how it's a delicate balance between lifting interest rates to stop people from spending so much money (and therefore reducing interest rates) and not tipping the country into recession.  So, tune in to this short but jam packed episode to learn more about inflation and why it's such a buzzword right now.    CONNECT WITH JOSH GILBERT LinkedIn: Josh Gilbert | LinkedIn   CONNECT WITH LADIES FINANCE CLUB Join our free facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat Website: https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At 43, Sharon was broke and knew nothing about investing. She was divorced, broke and building a business in Singapore when she started dabbling in investing with a $25 voucher for eToro. She is now qualified and full of investing wisdom, appearing on many panels and podcasts, reminding us it's never too late to start investing. You can start with a small amount of money.    Sharon begins her story with very important advice - don't give everything up when you're in a relationship and make sure you take care of yourself. The time women spend raising children is actually a fairly small part of their financial life. When the kids are grown up, you've still got many many years where you need to be able to look after yourself financially - A man is not a financial plan.    When you start investing, start small. It's a myth that you need to start with thousands of dollars. Sharon started with just $25 and would invest small amounts in the companies where she enjoyed spending her money and doing it this way really sparked her interest so she was keen to open the newspaper and dive into the stock news.    Through investing, creating new financial behaviours and side hustling, Sharon now owns her home and has a very comfortable retirement fund. This is incredible when she had to start completely from scratch after her divorce. She never thought that it was going to be possible and through hard work, she has built security and confidence in her financial future.    Sharon also shares her insights into superannuation, shifting your financial mindset, ESG investing and finding ways to make money on the side. Are you ready to budget like a boss? In this episode, we sit down with money coach Lexi Smith to chat about the B-word budgeting, breaking it all down so you can get control over your finances!   Lexi takes it back to basics for us. Budgeting is working out where we stand and what we want to achieve and coming up with a plan to get there. She explains that budgeting does not have to be hard - the hardest part is often starting.   First of all, work out the categories for your budget.  Lexi gives us the most common categories, so grab a pen and note them down!  She also helps us work out what to do about those often-forgotten categories like Christmas and holiday spending. Lexi also has a really nifty trick which will help you save time and make sure your budget is accurate - bank statements (and how to download them!).   Most importantly, there is no one size fits all budget - it's about working through the different methods of budgeting so that you can find the one that works for you. One method that might work for you (and used by Lexi's clients!) is the Traffic Light Activity. This helps you work out your needs and wants and put a stop to unwanted spending habits! Lexi also breaks down the 50-30-20 and zero-based budgeting methods, as well as how mindful and intentional spending can help you move closer to your goals!   Finally, Lexi takes us through the mistakes she sees people making with both their budgeting (and spending!) and the differences between a money coach and a financial planner.   Get your pen and paper ready ladies because this one's a goodie!   Resources mentioned:   The Bucket Method by Barefoot Investor by Scott Pape   90 days - Rachel Cruze   Apps: WeMoney / Frollo    Clutterbug   CONNECT WITH LEXI SMITH   Website:  https://moneyvine.com.au/ Instagram: @moneyvine.au Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/savvysisterssociety CONNECT WITH LADIES FINANCE CLUB Join our free facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat   Website: https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tessa is a family lawyer based in Sydney for Lander and Rogers law firm and is an absolute wealth of knowledge on marriage, defacto and separation law.  Tessa is here to share with us some of the common mistakes she sees women making when preparing for a marriage, defacto relationship, divorce or separation and fill us in on everything we should be doing instead to protect our financials, property, children, and approach big decisions with preparation and confidence.  The biggest mistake Tessa sees every day is couples not having a discussion before getting married or committing to someone on a defacto basis about what your goals are for the future, any assets coming into the relationship, plans for the assets in the future, whether you're aligned in terms of how you want to spend or save money, and what would happen if you decide to have children (in terms of who would stay at home/daycare), and, if you ever decide to separate.  We all come from different financial backgrounds and I know these conversations can be very awkward and clunky to bring up but they are so important to set yourself up with financial confidence and know that if anything goes wrong, you're always covered.  Tessa explores how the family court works, contracts including parenting arrangements and binding financial agreements, keeping on top of all of your documentation, record keeping, and reminds us that, in Australia, a separation settlement is definitely not always 50/50.  Tune in and write down all of Tessa's advice and wisdom to keep yourself protected before getting married/defacto or separated/divorced and breathe a big sigh of relief knowing your future is covered.    CONNECT WITH TESSA KELMAN Website:  https://landers.com.au/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/company/lander-&-rogers/ CONNECT WITH LADIES FINANCE CLUB Join our free facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat   Website: https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meggie is the founder of PepTalkHer, has created a free App that is all about helping women negotiate their salaries, has worked with fortune 500 companies and used to be a foreign correspondent for the BBC. She's passionate about helping women to get paid what they're worth and is on a mission to see 50/50 women in leadership roles.  If even thinking about talking to your boss about a pay raise fills you with dread, you're not alone. The first time I wanted to negotiate my salary I felt sick to my stomach, started shaking and was full to the brim with nerves. Meggie is here to help us all tackle this difficult next step on our financial growth journey and provide proven strategies to get rid of our fears, reframe our mindset and walk into that terrifying conversation with confidence.  We'll begin with the common mistakes women are making with their salaries. Firstly - You deserve a pay rise! Even if you're happy with what you're earning right now. Remember, you can negotiate for what you're truly worth, every single year and not just once! Even if the idea of that makes you feel sick like I did.  Meggie tells us if you want to feel valued and recognised in your workplace - negotiate your salary. Some employers even look for staff that actively negotiate for themselves because they know they will have the skills to advocate for the business too. We explore how to frame the conversation by identifying the value you will bring to the company or are already contributing.  Meggie is excited to help women change their financial futures. One of her clients obtained a 14% pay rise when everyone else in her team got a 5%. She has even had three women in her program negotiate their way to six figure pay increases! Wow! So where do you start?  Timing is everything and preparation is key. There is a window for every company and Maggie will run us through how to determine when to bring it up and what documents and information to bring into the room.  But what happens if they say “no”? It's not the end of the world and it doesn't mean you shouldn't ask and ask regularly. Negotiating is a muscle and you need to practice it often to master the skill.  Meggie runs us through her app PepTalkHer and how it was started with the mission to close the gender pay gap and help women get paid what they're worth. It will get you career fit and allow you to record all of your wins and the amazing things you've done for the business so you can bring a brag book into your salary negotiation and grab that pay raise.  Meggie shares practical strategies to start using like the FYI email to give you a point of connection with your boss and highlight what you've achieved that week and what you're focusing on in the next week.  We then discuss the top questions sent in from listeners and Meggie shares all of her expertise on how to handle each situation to achieve the best outcome.  Every single woman needs to listen to this episode and take onboard Meggie's wisdom and advice. Start off 2023 by becoming a champion for yourself and remind your boss of the amazing value you bring every day. In this episode, we run through the steps to placing your first trade and how you can match your values with your investing. Woohoo! First up, we discuss the different share trading platforms and how they work. Emma explains what to look out for when you're choosing your platform, including brokerage fees. We also touch on micro-investing and the benefits of these platforms if you're just starting out. Don't underestimate the power of investing small amounts regularly! Next, you need to do your research as to what you want to invest in. Emma explains the options that are available including individual Australian shares, international shares and prepackaged options like Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)  There are a range of options, it's just about finding out what's right for you. Emma breaks down the actual steps you go through when buying a share. From choosing the share, what buying at limit or market means (and why it's different for ETFs) to why the settlement has a funny reference next to it. Plus, why it's super helpful for tax time to make sure you make a note somewhere of your original purchase price! Finally, we discuss a topic I'm very passionate about which women are absolutely leading the charge on - ethical investing. Essentially this is investing to match your values. Emma explains the broader term behind this - ESG (environmental, social and governance). You can do your own research and choose companies based on what they stand for, or there are some really great pre-packaged ethical options with ETFs. By owning shares in companies that are doing the right thing, you can force change, which is so powerful. Ladies, investing is not complicated. Girls just wanna have funds, but when it comes to investing where do you even start?   I know the first time I went to start investing it felt like the one and only time I went to the free-weights section of the gym. It was very male, there wasn't a lot of signage, I didn't know if I was doing it right and the whole time I was thinking “where are all the women?”.   Don't worry, investing no longer has to be like free weights. For this episode, I sit down with the divine Emma Kirk from Magellan Group. Emma's superpower is breaking down the world of investing. Over the next two episodes, we run through the basics (Part 1) and the doing (Part 2).   Emma shares the key reason we should consider investing: it gives us control over our financial future and choice. Whatever our goals are, investing helps us get there a lot faster than savings alone.   Investing is being the owner of an asset. Emma explains the five asset classes and how these work as investments to provide income and capital gain. Considering the attributes of assets is also really important and Emma is onto it! She explains what attributes we should look for to make sure they are high-quality investments.   We also chat all things stock market! Emma explains the stock market in a way that will have ALL the lightbulbs in your head going off. If you've had trouble understanding the stock market before, you're going to love how she explains it!   Emma also takes us what exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are and the two kinds - passive and active.   As Emma shares, investing is not complicated! She runs through the basic concepts of investing and the considerations you need to think about to make sure you're kicking those financial goals.   We also run through compounding and dollar cost averaging, and how this is an absolutely incredible approach for long-term gains.   Now, there are lots of different pathways to invest, but you do need to consider the fees on each of them. Fees come in all different shapes and sizes and Emma explains the ins and outs.   Finally, Emma takes us through diversification. Let's get super savvy with Gemma Mitchell

Wanna get super savvy but have no idea where to start? That's why I'm excited to chat with one of my favourite women in superannuation. Her name is Gemma Mitchell and she is an absolute gun when it comes to this stuff. We talk about the small things you can do now, to ensure your super is looking as good as George Clooney does when you retire. Ladies, get ready to take some notes because this one is a goody! Gemma explains what superannuation is and explains how it's different from an investment. Think of it as Future You's wallet. She explains why it's so hard to think about it and why it's SO important to think about it now, not when we retire. Gemma talks us through how much super we should have, and how much we should be aiming to have when we retire. The ATO has a calculator you can check, but Gemma explains that this is a pretty conservative figure and isn't tailored to your lifestyle. To make retirement planning less of a bore and much more relevant to your lifestyle the company Gemma works for (Super Fierce) has released a fun, interactive retirement planner called Blingo. If you check out the Blingo calculator and your super isn't where you want it to be, Gemma steps us through three easy ways you can have the biggest impact on your super balance. She also explains the different contributions including employer, concessional and non-concessional, spouse and super splitting. It's important to get advice as there are lots of different ways you can do it, and the rules are always changing. Gemma also talks us through a super exciting new incentive, that makes a huge difference if you've had time out of the workforce, or are self-employed, which is a huge win for women!  Gemma also reminds us that it's a good idea to look for any lost super, which could provide a boost to your super. Plus - why it's so, so important to check your insurance before you consolidate your super. She explains the different kinds of insurance that come with our super balances including life insurance, terminal illness, income protection and total and permanent disability as well as some important considerations when looking at your insurance policies. If you don't choose the investment strategy for your super funds, you'll be given the default. Gemma explains that you can change this according to how you want your money to be invested, from defensive (safer investments) through to growth (shares and property) and how you might want this to change across your lifetime. Think of your super fund as your future holiday fund for when you retire. We need to take action! We want to live our best life when we retire and getting our super sorted means that we get to do that. On the episode today we are joined by Lisa Simpson, a financial counsellor who helps people to get out of debt. After working for over 13 years as a Financial Counsellor and Educator Lisa has developed a passion for Financial Coaching and Literacy and her broad knowledge base allows her to assist people from all walks of life, all ages and circumstances.   Lisa has a passion for teaching people what they don't know about money. She shares with us the common ways that people are getting into debt. In her most recent role, she was looking at people's bank statements every day and saw a huge number of Buy Now Pay Later entries on their bank statements. Overcommitting via Buy Now Pay Later is so easy, and Lisa shares the ways that these kinds of debts can easily get out of control.   Lisa also shares why Buy Now Pay Later aren't regulated under the ASIC rules like other bank products and why this has created financial hardship for so many.   I know if these products were around when I was in my late teens and early twenties I definitely would have got myself into debt. Lisa provides guidance on what to do if you have a Buy Now Pay Later debt, with the first step being a budget, which she likes to term a personal money map. Essentially, this gets you from where you are now, to where you want to be. I love this way of looking at budgeting! Lisa teaches us about the snowball method of paying down debts.   Lisa also shares the downfalls of Buy Now Pay Later products, and why the ‘no interest' term hides the other fees and charges that can apply.   Lisa explains why the four walls of your own home are the most important costs to consider first and why you should prioritise these four needs over wants.   If you're in debt, there is help available. Lisa shares how Financial Counsellors can help. There is also significant help available from utility providers, banks and even grants, including payment plans, energy audits and moratoriums (essentially a payment holiday!).   Lisa also steps us through ways of approaching hard financial conversations with your partner. These can be hard, but Lisa's tips will really help.   A common money problemo we often get asked about is - will a Buy Now Pay Later debt affect their credit rating? Lisa explains the difference between your credit report, credit rating and your credit score and what is and isn't listed on these.   Ladies, if you're in debt (no matter how much), help is available and is so much easier to access than you might have thought!   Resources mentioned:   Connect with a financial counsellor: 1800 007 007 (National Debt Helpline)   QLD: Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme (HEEAS)   VIC: Utility relief grant scheme (URGS)   NSW: Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) vouchers   SA: Energy bill concessions   Debt Snowball Method - Scott Ramsay   Domino Your Debts - Scott Pape (Barefoot Investor)   Atomic Habits - James Clear CONNECT WITH LISA SIMPSON   LinkedIn:    https://au.linkedin.com/in/lisa-simpson Facebook:    https://www.facebook.com/uncommoncentsgoldcoast/ CONNECT WITH LADIES FINANCE CLUB Join our free facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat   Website:    https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram:    https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn:    https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Debt me out of here with Kristen Hartnett

For today's episode, I am so excited to be joined by Kristen Hartnett from the Salvation Army's Moneycare financial counselling program to talk all things debt (and how to get out of it!). Moneycare is a free, Australia-wide, professional and confidential service for anyone and everyone who finds themselves in financial hardship.   Kristen explains to us the most common forms of debt that people come to talk to them about, including credit cards, Buy Now Pay Later, personal loans, utilities, taxation, fines, child support or owing money to family and friends. There are so many ways to get into debt these days, the important thing is that you talk to someone about it and explore your options.   Ladies, if you're in debt, there is so much you can do to get out of it. Kristen shares some incredible tips - there are so many more options than you might know.   In terms of budgeting, Kristen lets us know how to get started, recommends some really great resources, and shares that the best way to approach budgeting is to tackle one thing at a time.   Kirsten also breaks down Buy Now Pay Later debt, explaining that even though the product is sold as being ‘interest-free', if you don't pay the product back in time, then you start incurring fees and charges. These products can be pretty scary because they are easy to get into and are unregulated, which means there are no credit checks. Kristen also explains credit card debt and shares how this kind of debts can often snowball. As we say at LFC, when things get drastic, don't stick it on the plastic!   Understanding your money story is another great tip from Kristen. She reminds us that the stories we often tell ourselves about how we are about money often aren't true. If you're feeling hopeless with money, you are likely overlooking all the ways you are great with it. Changing your story around money can be really powerful.   We also chat about how important it is to understand your debts and bills if you share them with your partner.    Kristen reminds us that debts don't go away, but just as they grow day by day you have the power to make them go away, day by day. She reminds us that there's always hope and light at the end of the tunnel and that your debts don't have to define you. You can get out of debt, and there are people who can help! When we talk about tax, it's very easy to switch off and think of last night's episode of The Bachelor but not anymore! On the episode today we're chatting to Helen Francis, Principal Accountant of Ty Francis. Helen's on a mission to make talking tax a lot less boring and a little more sexy.   In our conversation, we talk about how tax confuses so many of us and the biggest mistakes she sees ladies make with their tax return.   Helen explains the tax dates and how these vary depending on your circumstances. She also runs us through the things we don't need to tell the tax man about and when that side hustle of yours is and isn't considered to be a hobby for tax purposes.   Helen lets us know what we can and can't claim (and what people try and get away with claiming!). She also explains home office expenses and that all-important question of capital gains tax around investments! This part is so helpful if you've been making those dollars on your investments in the last financial year. Helen also cautions where things can get complicated with dividend re-investment plans and her recommendations around record keeping if you've got that happening.   We also cover how we actually legally reduce our tax bill (keyword being legally!). Helen runs us through superannuation and the benefits of voluntary superannuation contributions, as well as that advantageous but damn hard option of negative gearing.   Helen also explains the medicare surcharge and the key point you need to know if you're in a couple. Also, if you're not sure how things work with HECS, Helen gives us the lowdown!   We also chat about email hacks to deal with that Sunday night email anxiety - life-changing!   Ladies, I feel like an absolute tax guru after this chat - I know you will too!   CONNECT WITH HELEN:   Instagram:    @taxmermaid_ CONNECT WITH LADIES FINANCE CLUB   Join our free Facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat   Website:    https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram:    https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn:    https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You might hear some similarities in our voice (and last name) - Briony is my sister! But she's not just that, she's also an international speaker, author and viral video maker.   Bri runs us through her background which includes a commerce degree, film school, founding a speech and drama school, and creating viral videos with Mamamia. She also reveals what it felt like to face a shock cancer diagnosis in her early thirties and talks about her first book Life is Tough, So are You which documents the most important lessons she learnt on this journey.   Not only is Bri great at kicking cancer's butt, but she is also VERY good at setting goals.   Bri talks us through why the goals we set fail and the things that we can put in place to transform them from dumb goals into SMART goals. She reminds us to not be too ambitious (don't go from zero to hero ladies!) and that mindset is key.   Bri talks us through the goals she sets, how to review your goals for optimal results and some reflection questions that will help craft the ultimate goals for the coming year.   Bri helps direct your goal setting with some great categories you can make goals in - financial, personal development, relationships, work career business, health and fitness, emotional and mental health, time, contribution to community, fun and holidays.   We also talk about vision boards, scheduling, ta-da lists, and how a photo album can transform your gratitude practice.   You are going to love this chat and I'm so excited for you to hear about how Bri uses goals to craft her best life! This episode is about one of my favourite things - why you need to set up an OMG fund, aka emergency fund, rainy day fund, and f***off fund (we explain why!). Lana our COO is on board for this episode and we step through everything you need to know about an OMG fund.   We start off with - what is an OMG fund? Quite simply it's money you keep in a separate bank account that you only use in emergencies. It's your new safety net and sits in cash.   Why do we need an emergency fund? Well, if COVID taught us anything,  it was that random shit that you'd never expect to happen happens!   We play a fun game called emergency vs. non-emergency and explore all the times when it IS ok and NOT ok to spend your OMG fund! Mental health and physical well-being are definitely reasons for dipping into your OMG fund.   The steps to open an OMG fund are simple. I step you through how to do this, including tips on how to set that emergency cashola saved up. There are so many creative ways you can make extra cash on the side - we run through those too. Where there's a will there's a way. Remember this is short-term pain for long-term gain!   We also talk about our own emergency funds and when we've needed to use them recently. The beauty of an emergency fund is that it relaxes you, gives you peace of mind and means you can get on with your life when emergencies come along.   Ladies, you've totally got this! Ladies I'm SO thrilled to have you here with me! My name is Molly Benjamin and I'm the founder of Ladies Finance Club. Massive confession - I was really bad with money. I would have preferred to get a brazilian than create a budget. My investments were made up of clothes and #goodtimes. I was almost 30 and while my guy mates were investing in the share market and buying property, my girlfriends and I were comparing how broke we were. So I took things into my own hands. I invited some girlfriends over, we ordered pizza, poured some wine and invited a mate who worked in finance to talk to us about this money stuff. Word got out about our finance rendezvous and we quickly outgrew my living room. My first event in the UK sold out in a week. Boom, Ladies Finance Club was born. Since that first event, we've spoken to over 25,000 women across the UK and Australia. We're helping women get fierce about their finances. That's why I'm here with this podcast. What I've learnt about getting your finance shit together is that it's so much easier than people make out. But you have to know where to start. So if you're like me, and you missed the money 101 lesson that we were never taught at school then sit back, get comfy, and pour yourself a drink. We're going to talk to some of the best money experts in the country. We'll chat about how you can get started investing fast, how to get out of debt and how to get onto that property ladder. Plus, some really simple ways you can manage your money (in minutes), and how to save thousands on your bills. We know that when women are financially empowered we change the world. We create better lives for our families, community and environment. Not only that - young women investors are driving the shift to sustainable investments. A big "yay!" for coming on this ride with me and I hope it really helps you start and take action toward your money goals.
