There's something about the longer days and lighter evenings that stirs up the urge for a fresh start. But while we're wiping down shelves and hauling out bags of donations, how often do we think about the clutter we can't see?I'm talking about the emotional and mental mess, the overwhelm, the overcommitting, the perfectionism that quietly weighs us down. The things we carry around in our heads and hearts long after they've outlived their purpose. So today, let's talk about a different kind of spring cleaning the kind that makes space in your soul.Let's slow down and journey together through the seasons with simplicity and intention. Subscribe to receive simple musings directly in your inbox.Letting Go of Mental ClutterWe all know what it feels like to walk into a room that's messy and chaotic. Your eyes don't know where to land, your mind feels scattered, and it's hard to focus. Now, imagine that same disarray but inside your head.Mental clutter shows up in so many ways:* Overwhelm from trying to juggle too many responsibilities.* Overcommitting because you're afraid of letting people down.* Perfectionism keeping you stuck, convincing you that if it's not flawless, it's not worth doing.Sound familiar? Me too.For a long time, I was the queen of overcommitting. I'd agree to things before checking my calendar, thinking I could somehow squeeze in one more thing. I'd say yes when my whole being was begging for a no. And perfectionism? She was my unwanted sidekick. I'd rewrite emails three times before sending them. I'd overthink captions to the point of deleting them. It was exhausting.But here's what I've learned: you can't create a slow and simple life if your mind is constantly racing. You can't feel at ease if your thoughts are tangled up in ‘shoulds' and ‘not enoughs'.How to Clear the Mental Clutter:* Simplify your inputs: Cut back on the noise. Mute accounts that leave you feeling inadequate. Reduce notifications. Give yourself permission to answer messages when you have capacity, not instantly.* Set gentle boundaries: Protect your peace by saying no, even when it's uncomfortable. It's okay to turn down a request or step back from a commitment if it's stretching you too thin.* Ditch perfectionism: Done is better than perfect. Let good enough be enough. Even when they felt clunky and draining, I'd stick with them out of habit. But spring is a beautiful reminder that it's okay to let your routines evolve with the season.Ask yourself:* Are your current rhythms fuelling or draining you?* Do you need more slowness in your mornings or more stillness in your evenings?* Could you loosen the grip on routines that feel too rigid?For me, refreshing my routine in spring looks like:* Swapping the coffee on the sofa mornings for coffee in the garden mornings.* Slowing down my evenings by reading with soft lighting instead of scrolling my phone.* Leaving white space in my calendar just for the sake of it—no tasks, no plans, just room to breathe.How to Create Space for Rest:* Prioritise white space: You don't have to fill every hour. Leaving space in your schedule allows room for spontaneity, creativity, and genuine rest.* Build transition moments: Add tiny moments of pause between activities. A short walk after work, a tea break before tackling the next task…it all counts.* Redefine productivity: Rest doesn't need to be earned. It's not a reward for getting everything done, it's the fuel that makes everything else sustainable.Your Soulful Spring Cleaning Prompt:If you're feeling ready to do some internal spring cleaning, here's a gentle journaling prompt to sit with:“What am I holding onto that feels heavy, and what would it feel like to set it down?”Let yourself write freely. Don't overthink it. Let the words flow onto the page without judgement.And if you find that you're carrying more than you realised, be gentle with yourself. Spring cleaning for the soul is not about fixing, it's about lightening. In this episode, I open up about how, in January, I found myself being quite unkind to myself, often in ways I didn't even notice at first. This realisation sparked an idea for this episode. Hehe, something good did come out of it! We all know that when we're in a negative rut, we can self-sabotage in obvious ways. But what about the subtle, everyday ways we're unkind to ourselves...the thoughts, habits, and small self-criticisms that feel so natural, we don't even question them? Because they're hard to identify, we rarely make an effort to change them. They almost feel like a part of us.I hope this episode helps you cultivate more kindness and compassion for yourself. We often fail to give ourselves patience and grace...whether we're struggling with something personal, feeling unmotivated at work, or dealing with hormones. Some of what I share comes from my own experience, and some from research, but what I've learned is that we all do this in one way or another.These “small” moments of self-neglect aren't so small after all. She learned quite a lot when she agreed to be the chief volunteer leader of TWO nonprofit organizations during the 2020 lockdown. And yes, both organizations relied on in-person events for revenue. Ever wonder why it always seems like you have said “yes” to more than you can effectively manage, when you have ADHD? Impulsivity and people pleasing tendencies play a role, but our unique relationship with time that might be the biggest factor, making business success a lot more challenging. We have trouble accurately estimating how much time, energy and effort our commitments actually take, especially when they are shiny and new. A neurotypical person has a 12-16 week “time horizon” on average, while ours can feel a lot closer to 12-16 minutes at times. The reason for this time distortion is that ADHD brains tend to perceive time in just two categories: Now and Not Now, whatever we are focused on at the moment, and everything else, from an hour from now to the rest of our lives. I've seen how neglecting those internal boundaries can fuel burnout and overwhelm, especially in high-pressure environments like healthcare.   When we push ourselves to overcommit and chase perfection, we end up ignoring our personal needs, and that's actually blocking us from reaching a state of flow—a powerful state where we perform and feel our best. My advice? Set firm, clear boundaries. Embrace “good enough” instead of perfection. And don't forget to prioritize self-care and creativity. While it may seem counterintuitive, knowing when to let go of a customer can benefit your business in the long run.  We outline five critical rules to help you determine when it's time to part ways with a customer: Rule #1: Fire customers if they cost too much. Some customers drain more resources than they generate in revenue. It's crucial to track these costs accurately and address the imbalance. If you can't rectify the situation, it's time to let them go. Rule #2: Fire customers if they don't align with your brand. Your brand's values should resonate with your customer base. If a customer's values conflict with yours, maintaining the relationship can harm your brand's integrity and alienate your core audience. Rule #3: Fire customers if they don't fit with your future. As your business grows, some customers might no longer fit your strategic goals. Prioritize resources for future growth by letting go of customers who don't align with your long-term plans. Rule #4: Fire customers if they are too risky. If a customer's business model or payment practices pose a significant risk, it's safer to part ways. Overcommitting to one client or taking the undue risk can jeopardize your business stability. Rule #5: Fire customers if they abuse your employees. Support and protect your employees from abusive customers. Ensuring a respectful work environment is critical for employee morale and long-term success. Understanding these rules will help you make informed decisions about maintaining customer relationships that align with your business goals and values. Have you ever woken up late and missed the work out you had planned? And you say something like God I always do that. I'm so mad at myself. Think about the identity that you are putting on yourself. Now take that same example and your reaction is this… Wow… That's not like me.  I heard Ed Mylett say this, and it was such a massive lightbulb moment for me.  The first response is telling yourself - yup, that's who you are - you can't get your hot mess of a self up on time for the gym.  The second response is the opposite- it's saying… wow, this is not aligned with the person I see myself as. This small reaction moment completely changes how this experience affects you and how you label it.  In the first way, you may feel frustrated with yourself all day and an overall lower opinion of your ability to get things done as planned. And with the second response- you're like… ok let's pivot and carve out time at the end of the day to get it in because I'm a person that doesn't miss workouts.  This same method applies to so many areas of life that we are getting into today.  And it's just so simple - 5 words.  Wow, that's not like me.  And the reason why this works so insanely well is because we know that stopping negative talk is more powerful than increasing positive talk.  You know, I love something that is easy to remember and apply to your daily life. This is one of those!  Whenever we make a mistake or make the wrong choice or fail, or lose it some thing… Instead of all the other negative things, we could say… What if we said… Wow, that's not like me.  You are recognizing that this action or behavior or choice or mistake… Whatever it is… Does not identify with the person you want to be.  Good activity - your life priorities list and brain dump the type of person that you are  Then schedule it!!  The other day, on the way home from school Presley was saying how she has so much homework and she really needs to get ahead… We walk in the door and she unpacks her backpack and she doesn't have her laptop. It really hit her hard. She was crying and mad and said what is wrong with me… I always do this.  I sat down on her bed and said, wow, that's not like you. Now for the record… This is the second time she has forgotten her laptop since we started school a few weeks ago But I said to her… Did you forget your laptop yesterday… She's like no and I'm like what about the day before? And she's like no I'm like see?  I'm telling you… These five simple words, reframe how we label and interpret mistakes.  When you turn off your alarm and sleep through your work out… Rather than beating yourself up when you wake up… Your reaction is… This does not align with who I actually am! Examples: Losing it with your kids  Gossiping/ talking badly about someone  Talking bad about your own body  Wasting money  Being short with your spouse  Picking the wrong boyfriend  Overcommitting  Over apologizing  Wasting time scrolling  Going out of your way to make someone else's life hard  Picking a battle that you should have let go  Not supporting a friend like you wanted to  Eating super unhealthy to where you feel badly  When you go to beat yourself up- just stop yourself!!  And say those 5 words - Wow, that's not like me. It changes it all!  And is a real secret to true self confidence.
