If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“How to support someone when they are going through trauma.” ________I interviewed Briony Benjamin in my second series and it was such an impactful conversation that resonated with so many - I felt it was time to re-share. She has also just released her second book which is available in all book stores, right now! Briony is a Keynote Speaker, Author and Global Storyteller whose viral videos have been viewed by more than 200 million sets of eyeballs. Whilst working as Executive Producer at Australia's largest media outlet for women (Mamamia.com.au) she got the shock of her life. After feeling awful for over a year she found out it wasn't because she was a lazy slacker it was because she had cancer… all...through... her... body. Turning the camera on herself, Briony started documenting her journey in the short video 'You Only Get One Life'. Its raw portrayal of her experience went viral, touching millions. Her first book ‘Life is Tough But So Are You' has been a huge hit & her second book ‘Life is Tough - The Journal' has just been released. Her books share what this major life wake-up call taught her about living and is packed full of helpful guidance to get you through any sticky time. Briony is passionate about helping individuals face the toughest time of their lives with more ease and less fear and all the while emboldening them to live the biggest, most audacious version of their story. Briony and I were actually introduced via my producer, the wonderful Brianna - so this interview is the first time we've met but the connection was instant. We are kindred spirits, there's no doubt in my mind. Whether it's our disposition or the trauma we've both been through on our cancer journeys, I'm not sure - but I'm so pleased Briony has come into my life. She is an absolute ray of sunshine and if only I had a book like she's written to help me through my tough time - life would have been just that little bit better. There is nothing like the shakeup call of a cancer diagnosis to make sure you are doing what you love with your precious short time on Earth. Briony reveals how her life shifted following her diagnosis and the gift of stopping and reflecting on the present moment. Briony's mindset and approach were key to getting her through the toughest days of her life and she shares the core principles that guided her including: Why you don't have to be positive every minute of the day How some things don't have to be understood, just accepted Why it's important to lean on your people when you need them Finally, Briony shares exciting news about her new project - a journal to accompany her book! Are you someone who's good at setting goals? If you're not, maybe it's just because you don't have the right process in place. On today's episode, I talk to Briony Benjamin all about how to become a GOAL-GETTER. She talks us through her awesome process of how she sets goals. Also! You might hear some similarities in our voice (and last name) - Briony is my sister! But she's not just that, she's also an international speaker, author and viral video maker. Bri runs us through her background which includes a commerce degree, film school, founding a speech and drama school, and creating viral videos with Mamamia. She also reveals what it felt like to face a shock cancer diagnosis in her early thirties and talks about her first book Life is Tough, So are You which documents the most important lessons she learnt on this journey. Not only is Bri great at kicking cancer's butt, but she is also VERY good at setting goals. Bri talks us through why the goals we set fail and the things that we can put in place to transform them from dumb goals into SMART goals. She reminds us to not be too ambitious (don't go from zero to hero ladies!) and that mindset is key. Bri talks us through the goals she sets, how to review your goals for optimal results and some reflection questions that will help craft the ultimate goals for the coming year. Bri helps direct your goal setting with some great categories you can make goals in - financial, personal development, relationships, work career business, health and fitness, emotional and mental health, time, contribution to community, fun and holidays. We also talk about vision boards, scheduling, ta-da lists, and how a photo album can transform your gratitude practice. You are going to love this chat and I'm so excited for you to hear about how Bri uses goals to craft her best life! It's been such a fun few weeks easing back in with a few doses of #yaysofourlives for you, but we're finally back with our first full interview guest for the year and I couldn't think of a more perfect guest than Briony Benjamin. I read Briony's book, Life is Tough, But So Are You, when it came out in August last year and again just before this interview and both times, for different reasons, it was exactly what I needed to find my yay again and I hope this chat is the same for some of you too – it's like she looked into the future and covered off every topic that's relevant to the world right now. Her pathyay to her dream job as Executive Producer at Mamamia.com.au epitomises everything we love to talk about here taking twists and turns through drama teaching in London to a commerce degree then a second degree in film and TV after that. But it was finding out she had cancer all through her body while working in that role that really messed up her vision board. I don't feel I can do justice to her journey without reading the full book out here, but I trust that by the end of this you'll read it yourself as well as watching her short video 'You Only Get One Life' that went viral, touching millions including myself. Everything Briony shares about how to wade your way through tough times is painfully relevant to the pandemic and I feel so lucky to be able to share it with the yayborhood at a time where we all probably need a little reminder that, in Briony's words, you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter. She made a video of her experiences called "You Only Get One Life" that went viral, and has now been seen by over 200 million people. When you look at Briony Benjamin, she exudes joy, happiness and is the picture of health - bright lip, a smile on her face, a tan! But all of that was masking how she truly felt inside, and what went unnoticed for the better part of a year. After terrible night sweats and fatigue, her mother insisted she sees a specialist. Her mother intuition told her to fly down to Sydney for the appointment, thankfully she was there to hold Briony's hand when she received her diagnosis, Hodgkin's lymphoma. Briony had been working at MamaMia as a video producer, a dream job, a million girls or boys would want. But she had to stop all of that after her diagnosis, to start an IVF plan, chemo to focus on herself and her health. Briony, along with Denise, decided to battle cancer with a smile, and a bold red lip, because WHY NOT?! Years later, she is now CANCER FREE, and sharing her story with her new guide book 'Life Is Tough But So Are You' - we would highly recommend it, it will help get you through a health battle, a pandemic, homeschooling, the works!!! We hope you enjoy, Briony and Denise. Follow us on Instagram and don't forget to DM if you have a story that you would like to share. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Briony Benjamin had just started a new job. A few months later, she started to feel unwell. She felt crappy for a year without any known reason. Doctors told her she was just stressed and should rest more and learn to meditate, but it turned out she had cancer. Briony was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 31. Unsure of what was to come, she turned the camera on herself and started documenting her journey resulting in a short video, You Only Get One Life, which went viral. Her new book, Life Is Tough (But So Are You), Briony shares what the experience taught her about navigating tricky times and finding the new path into your next awesome chapter. We've all had those days, right? Where we feel tired and crappy… where our health just hasn't been right. Maybe you've even consulted Doctor Google and either panicked, laughed or both when it spat out a cancer diagnosis. But what if that diagnosis was actually right. And your whole life was flipped upside down in an instant. Mamamia's Briony Benjamin was 30 years-old. Riding high in her career interviewing celebrities, producing hilarious viral videos and thinking she had her whole life ahead of her, when after feeling pretty crap for a while and brushing it off she received some crushing news. “When I think back on it, my body was sending me all the warning signs that something wasn't quite right but I didn't know how yet to trust that.” This conversation is about how to rise to the challenge when things go pear shaped. And how not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path. Briony shares how to figure out what's truly important in life, grab onto the job and gain the confidence to bounce back from the lows. Viral video producer Briony Benjamin was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 31. Her debut book Life Is Tough (But So Are You) How to rise to the challenge when things go pear-shaped couldn’t have arrived at a more appropriate time. And I hope today’s conversation is a great comfort to our listeners, no matter what you’re going through. Because as we talk about today, you never know what is going on behind closed doors. Briony was a few months into a new job when she started feeling crappy. Doctors told her she was just stressed and should rest more and learn to meditate. But it turns out she had cancer all through her body. Turning the camera on herself, Briony started documenting her journey (from chemo to egg freezing) in the short video 'You Only Get One Life'. If you haven’t watched it, please do. I’ve linked it in the show notes. Her new book sharies wise guidance on how to navigate difficult times and will help you gain perspective on what's truly important in life - from a young woman who never expected to survive The Big C. Let’s meet the incredible Briony. Watch You Only Get One Life See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “How to support someone when they are going through trauma.” Briony Benjamin is a Keynote Speaker, Author and Global Storyteller whose viral videos have been viewed by more than 200million sets of eyeballs. Her first book ‘Life is Tough But So Are You' published by Murdoch Books has just hit the shelf last week. It shares what this major life wake-up call taught her about living and is packed full of helpful guidance to get you through any sticky time. Whether it's our disposition, or the trauma we've both been through on our cancer journeys, I'm not sure - but I'm so pleased Briony has come into my life. She is an absolute ray of sunshine and if only I had a book like she's written to help me through my tough time - life would have been just that little bit better. In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, Tory sits down with Executive Producer of Video at Mamamia, Briony Benjamin. She has had a had a very busy life, some would say a 24/7 life, as a viral video producer. But, Briony's world came crashing down into a million pieces. ‘I was working at Mamamia as a video producer but, throughout the first 12 months I just felt rotten' says Briony. After a push from her parents, she saw a Hematologist who revealed that she had stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 31. Briony has written a book about her experience - Life Is Tough (But So Are You). So, during her battles with cancer, how tough was it? ‘The first week was shattering' says Briony, ‘the waves of shock and disbelief really hit you.' The title of her booked summed it all up. ‘Yes, this is tough, but I also wanted to let people know – You have everything inside you that you need to fight this and get through it. And, you will.' Although reluctantly, Briony started to record her thoughts throughout her treatment. ‘I am so glad that I did because one, it was therapeutic and two, it gave me a project and something else to think about.' Once she had gotten through the worst of her treatment, she passed the content to Mamamia who edited it into a 3-minute short film. That video has connected with millions of people around the world. It became a tool for others going through treatment, to share with their own family and friends to explain the process and what cancer patients go through. ‘For me, it wasn't the treatment that gave me strength – it was the stories of others who had been through something tough that gave me the most strength.' Briony shares the most powerful step she took towards her recovery. Someone once said, “Some things don't need to be understood – just accepted” Briony shares, ‘I really tried not to waste energy on the ‘why me' ‘why is this happening' type conversations and just focus on plan and go forward. So, acceptance was massive.' The small steps are often the most powerful. For Briony, once the chemo had finished, the emotions became the hardest. ‘When you are in trauma, you cannot process trauma. But when you actually stop, that is when is gets hard.' Briony also came to the realisation that everyone struggles through that stage, and this brought her comfort. Soulfulness and journaling have played a major role in processing for Briony. ‘Journaling is such an important super activity' says Briony, ‘research even shows that those who journal through trauma, their wounds heal faster. You're taking the churning of information and you are ordering, and making sense of it. Journaling was the single most helpful tool that got me through that time' says Briony. Briony is in a stage where she is learning to rest. ‘I've realised that the way I have been running my life, till now, is not a sustainable model.' Briony hopes to move into mentoring and speaking, ‘But, I know that if I don't protect my health and energy, then none of those things work' says Briony, ‘We get this one precious body and so many of us really don't look after them.' So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Briony Benjamin.
