I have a confession: I'm not great with money. And when I say not great, I mean terrible. I cut myself slack because I'm building a business, doing a Masters degree and the primary carer for two small humans, but I'm 40 and still don't really have my $hit together when it comes to money. I'll preface this by saying that by national standards, my little family unit is probably considered ‘wealthy'. We own a home (well, half a home - we're in a long-term relationship with the bank who owns the other half). We can afford to go to Woollies and buy pretty much whatever groceries we want, most of the time. But we also live pay cheque to pay cheque, and getting down to single digits in our daily account happens more than I'd like to admit. My perception of wealth is probably skewed by the fact that I have a successful and affluent group of friends, so one of my favourite pastimes is beating myself up for my inability to create financial abundance (yay!). So, given our collective current financial hurt, I thought this episode we'd focus on financial wellbeing. To guide us is Molly Benjamin from Ladies Finance Club. Five years ago, she invited a few girlfriends over to chat about money. Since then, they've moved out of her lounge room and into much bigger spaces, found 50,000 new friends and spoken with some of the world's biggest businesses with one goal: to help women get rich. In the era of the Kardashian-ification of wealth, and our warped perception of it, this chat couldn't have come at a better time. It's so powerful when women get together and we actually start talking about money. We can learn from each other because guys are doing it all the time. They're talking about what they're investing in. They're talking about money. They're talking about pay rises. We are not. Molly Benjamin, Ladies Finance ClubI've always been clear that I want to build wealth not so I can buy fancy shoes (well, maybe some really dope sneakers) but so I can be generous with the people I love most and take care of them if they're ever in a bind. But since I interviewed Molly, I've done a couple of things differently. * I downloaded a budgeting app and connected my bank accounts (which, if I'm honest, made me feel like I deserved some sort of medal or small trophy until I saw how much I was spending at the supermarket and then I felt unwell). * Off the back of #1 I got WAY smarter with my supermarket shop, shopping at the local green grocer and clearing out the cupboards, and I've shaved $150 off our grocery bill in the last fortnight. * I started really thinking about my financial goals and getting specific about them. In short, I've actioned some of Molly's simple, easy-to-follow advice and I feel much better for it. Here are my key takeaways from our chat: * [02:50] Are we unfairly tying up our self worth in our net worth? How money is emotional (and why it shouldn't be)* [04:40] How do you feel about rich people? Hear me get vulnerable real fast… plus we chat through how stupidly secretive we are about money and the impact it has on comparison-itis* [07:10] What happens when women start talking about money, plus what Molly did to get on the Aussie property ladder as a woman on a single income* [09:00] What does the way you were brought up say about your money habits now, and - if you're a parent - what money mindset are you passing onto your kids? * [11:00] ‘Rich people are…' and other exercises to help you work out your beliefs around money * [12:00] Money role models for men versus women (one word - yikes), and the true power of wealth * [13:20] Do we all have to be entrepreneurs? Why side-hustle culture isn't for everyone and how to get creative if you're looking to bump up your income (and keep your 9-5)* [15:38] Opposites attract… Money, relationships and how to get you and your partner on the same page financially ASAP* [19:19] Financial stressors ahoy! Inflation, interest rates and insanity at the supermarket. Getting real during tough economic times * [23:50] Are you negotiating your bills? If not, Molly has a question for you: Why the hell not?!* [25:50] Molly's favourite money apps * [27:20] I almost die of embarrassment with two big money admissions and how to better manage cashflow when you're a freelancer (AKA feast one month, famine the next)* [29:50] Molly answers your questions! From paying down your mortgage versus investing the gains to setting up your kids for a financially healthy future * [32:20] What your kids are absorbing from your money language, and how to get them involved (and savvy) when it comes to your family spend* [34:00] Savings, super and becoming a super-investor - where to put your money * [35:35] Have you got sandy ears? If so, it might be time to get your head out of the sand when it comes to your wealth (and while we're at it, your health)* [37:50] Stop ghosting money! How to get your money to be your BFF* [38:14] Molly's plain Jane, ‘vanilla' investment strategy anyone can copy * [40:00] Pumped to get your $$$ in order? With me today is Founder of Ladies Finance Club, Molly Benjamin, whose mission is to help women get rich so they have full control and freedom over their lives. Molly released her book, Girls Just Wanna Have Funds, earlier this year and I'm delighted to share a conversation with Molly today about what women can do to become more money savvy.    At first Molly was not very good with money. Realising her friends were also a bit clueless when it came to personal finances, Molly put on an info night with a money expert in her living room. From there, things really took off and in 2018, The Ladies Finance Club was born. Now, LFC has had over 35,000 women attend their events, masterclasses, webinars, and workshops.   In this conversation, Molly talks about the steps she took to turn her money situation around, particularly the mindset shift to go from spender to saver. She talks about the first step of building up an emergency fund, even if you start with just $10, and the empowerment this gives women to take control of their finances.    Girls Just Wanna Have Funds is specifically designed to be gone through with a friend and we talk about the importance of accountability when it comes to changing your money habits. We talk about why women are reluctant to look at their finances, the impact from generations before us and how half the battle is just getting started.    Toward the end of the episode, Molly shares 4 simple tips that we can implement tomorrow to take care of our finances. She talks about the importance of getting clear on your goals because, without them, we don't have the motivation to save. We also talk about getting familiar with how much money is coming in and going out and creating a new spending plan.   Check out the Ladies Finance Club website for loads of free resources and tools to help you get started today. You don't have to be a maths genius, you just need to get started. I love Molly's mission and how she is really helping women change the way they think and behave with their money. Although she had been working as a communications specialist in the financial sectors for national and international companies for most of her career such as Barclays, the Financial Conduct Authority and the Bank of Queensland. In fact, over a glass of prosecco with her gal pals she realised they were all a bit #clueless when it came to their personal finances. As an experiment, Molly put on an info-night in her living room. No big deal, just a few girls, some champagne and a money expert with real-world insights. Things really took off from there and Ladies Finance Club (formerly She's on the Money) was born in London in 2018. Since then Ladies Finance Club has had over 30,000 women attend an event, webinar or workshop and has partnered and run corporate workshops with the likes of Google, Pinterest, Vanguard, and many more. We've all felt how awkward it can be to talk about money in relationships but it's such an important conversation to have early and often in order to avoid any issues or misunderstandings down the line. In today's conversation, I'm chatting with Betsy Westcock, a superb financial wellness coach in Sydney, who explains why it's never too early to have that uncomfortable conversation. We need to discuss everything from how to pay for a date night or a weekend escape to all of our dreams, big money goals and spending priorities. Now I know how people tend to avoid talking about those dreaded numbers, in fact, the Ladies Finance Club conducted a poll that showed one in five people didn't even know how much their partners earned so Betsy's advice can not come any sooner!  Betsy covers the importance of discussing how money will be managed on a day-to-day basis, what each partner brings to the relationship, what goals the couple has and what would happen if one of you loses your job, stays home with children, or gets sick. We all have different financial backgrounds and mindsets so by chatting about how bills will be split, how to manage unexpected costs, and how to put money towards long-term and short-term goals, you'll always stay on the same page and not start to resent your partner.  Life can be so unpredictable so we have to prepare for any unforeseen circumstances by maintaining our financial autonomy, even when we're in a relationship. Betsy is here to help you out with many useful apps and strategies to establish your financial independence and help manage any shared expenses. Listen in for all of Betsy's tips to structure your regular money conversations as a couple to stay on track, grow together and achieve your financial goals with joy!   Resources mentioned: App: Beem It App: Splitwise   CONNECT WITH BETSY WESTCOTT Website: https://www.betsywestcott.com/ Instagram: @betsywestcott  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/betsywestcott/    CONNECT WITH LADIES FINANCE CLUB Join our free facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat Website: https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ladies I'm SO thrilled to have you here with me! My name is Molly Benjamin and I'm the founder of Ladies Finance Club. Massive confession - I was really bad with money. I would have preferred to get a brazilian than create a budget. My investments were made up of clothes and #goodtimes. I was almost 30 and while my guy mates were investing in the share market and buying property, my girlfriends and I were comparing how broke we were. So I took things into my own hands. I invited some girlfriends over, we ordered pizza, poured some wine and invited a mate who worked in finance to talk to us about this money stuff. Word got out about our finance rendezvous and we quickly outgrew my living room. My first event in the UK sold out in a week. Boom, Ladies Finance Club was born. Since that first event, we've spoken to over 25,000 women across the UK and Australia. We're helping women get fierce about their finances. That's why I'm here with this podcast. What I've learnt about getting your finance shit together is that it's so much easier than people make out. But you have to know where to start. So if you're like me, and you missed the money 101 lesson that we were never taught at school then sit back, get comfy, and pour yourself a drink. We're going to talk to some of the best money experts in the country. We'll chat about how you can get started investing fast, how to get out of debt and how to get onto that property ladder. Plus, some really simple ways you can manage your money (in minutes), and how to save thousands on your bills. We know that when women are financially empowered we change the world. We create better lives for our families, community and environment. Not only that - young women investors are driving the shift to sustainable investments. A big "yay!" for coming on this ride with me and I hope it really helps you start and take action toward your money goals. Especially if your head has been in the sand about your money for a long time.   Ladies, it's time to get money savvy!   LINKS   Join our free facebook group - Ladies Finance Club Money Chat   Website: https://www.ladiesfinanceclub.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ladiesfinanceclub/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ladies-finance-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The fastest growing demographic of homelessness people in Australia is women over the age of 55. Are you good with money, got your sh*t together or is it a constant struggle? For most people money and personal finance aren't on the top of the to-do list. Finance can be boring, complicated and often we think we'll never get a handle on it, so it's easier to forget it altogether than confront it. But the reality is, when it comes to women and finance there's still a massive financial gap in salaries, super, investments and pensions and that gap will be felt for a lifetime, literally. Something needs to change!Molly Benjamin, founder of Ladies Finance Club,is on a mission to do just that.  Living the life in London and with a great job working in the financial sector, Molly is the first to admit that she wasn't that great with money. A trip to the supermarket and a desperate call to a friend because she didn't have the cash to pay the bill and Molly knew she needed to get her act together. So, over a glass of prosecco with her gal pals and a frank discussion about money, Molly had an epiphany. They were all a bit clueless about money and if that was the case for them, then maybe it was true for other women. Since that day, Molly has educated herself on all things personal finance. Although she claims to be no expert on the subject, Molly has created a community that helps women under the ins and out of personal finance and improve their money situation. Like a lot of people, I have been saving money since we went into quarantine. No daycare and before or after school care fees, no sporting fees, travel costs are gone and we're obviously not going out. BUT there's the underlying anxiety over job security – a familiar story all over Australia and the rest of the world. That's if you haven't already been stood down or had your income significantly reduced. So it can be hard to really enjoy those Netflix binges when you're worried about how you're going to pay the bills. Research shows that 1 in 3 Australian Households can't find $500 in an emergency, so there are a lot of people feeling financially overwhelmed and anxious right now.  I reached out to the money coaches at Ladies Finance Club to find out their money-saving moves to try and help us stay afloat.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
