Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2025 9:19

Alright, let's be real. We've all been to one of those so-called ‘networking events' where you slap on a name tag, shake a bunch of hands, and collect a small stack of business cards that you will—100%—never look at again. And if you're thinking, ‘Nah, I totally follow up,' let me ask you this: Do you remember the last three people you met at one of those things?Exactly.Today, we're going to fix that. Because networking isn't about collecting contacts—it's about being remembered. And let's be honest, most people are pretty forgettable. So, if you're sick of forgettable conversations, let's talk about how to ditch the small talk, spark real connections, and become the kind of person people WANT to follow up with. Full transcript can be found here: https://jimmyglenos.com/2025/03/14/the-power-of-networking-why-nice-to-meet-you-is-not-enough/ Learn more about Executive and Leadership Coaching at https://jimmyglenos.com/ #jimmyglenos #jglenos #unlocktheshortcut #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #leadershipcoaching #executivecoaching #podcast https://www.linkedin.com/in/jglenos/https://www.facebook.com/jglenos/https://www.instagram.com/jimmyglenos/https://youtube.com/@coachjimmyglenoshttps://shortcut.systeme.io/funhttps://calendly.com/jglenos/hello

November rolls around, and suddenly, gratitude is trending harder than pumpkin spice lattes. Here in the U.S., Thanksgiving sets the stage for feasting, gathering, and (hopefully) counting our blessings. For a few fleeting moments, we pause to reflect on the people and things we cherish most. But let's face it: once the turkey's gone and the holiday decor makes its way back into storage, (because you know, there's Christmas) how often do we revisit that feeling of gratitude? And wouldn't life feel richer if we kept that thankful vibe alive year-round?Here's the deal: gratitude isn't just a seasonal sentiment. It's a secret weapon for happiness, resilience, and even productivity if you let it. So, let's dig into what gratitude is, why it matters, and—most importantly—how to put it into action without requiring you to dust off that half-empty journal you bought ten years ago. (I know, that stung…I've got one too.) Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2024 10:55

Stop expecting so much from your employees, your family, and yourself. It's a waste of time and a perpetual fountain of disappointment. Sounds ridiculous, right? But, hear me out. I'm not suggesting you lower the bar of what you'd like to see happen in those around you. And I'm certainly not asking you to stop pushing yourself to higher and higher levels. What I am suggesting is that you consider the success rate of your past expectations and the effect they have on you and the people in your life.Expectations are those silent setups that fill you with anticipation and hope, but ultimately result in disappointment, or at best, nothing at all. That's a rollercoaster ride no one asked for.As an example, if someone meets our expectations, we're likely not to have an emotional response (because the other person did exactly what we thought they would do). And if they miss our expectations, we will be disappointed and possibly even angry, disrespected, or devalued. That sounds like a recipe for repeated disaster and growing feelings of imposter syndrome. So, like I said before, stop expecting so much from others. It's a waste of time.Full transcript can be found here: https://jimmyglenos.com/2024/11/11/great-expectations-the-ultimate-disappointment-machine/Learn more about Executive and Leadership Coaching at https://jimmyglenos.com/ #jimmyglenos #jglenos #unlocktheshortcut #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #leadershipcoaching #executivecoaching #podcast https://www.linkedin.com/in/jglenos/https://www.facebook.com/jglenos/https://www.instagram.com/jimmyglenos/https://youtube.com/@coachjimmyglenoshttps://shortcut.systeme.io/funhttps://calendly.com/jglenos/hello

Not tasks, not time, but focus!Yeah, that's right. I said it. You are not going to squeeze more out of your day by getting every little thing blocked out on your calendar with some fancy task scheduling software or manual time-blocking calendar. “Whoa, whoa, whoa, Mr. Shortcut Man! Hello, I'm Jimmy Glenos, the Life & Leadership Locksmith and welcome to Unlock the Shortcut.Today we take a departure from my typical format because I want to share a great conversation I had with a new friend of mine, Max Palomeque. Max is an Air Force Veteran, FBI Veteran, author, public speaker, certified leadership coach. His new book, the Infourge Compendium of Models and Theories for Coaches, Facilitators, and Consultants is an amazing repository of frameworks, models, theories, tools, and techniques that spans industry relevant knowledge of Bias, Change Management, Culture, Decision-Making, Leadership Development, Problem-Solving, and Stress Management just to name a few. Seriously, it's all in here. In our conversation, we discuss what it's like working for the FBI, the importance of situational leadership, and effective techniques when working with hostile or resistant clients.A big dose of gratitude goes out to my good friend, Maureen Rudell, who introduced me to Max. Maureen is also an Air Force Veteran and leadership coach, and she is the Director of Coaching at Kaveo Leadership. Thank you, Maureen for this wonderful connection. I appreciate both of you. When we think of self-care, most of us imagine spa days, yoga, meditation, or maybe a well-deserved vacation—anything to break away from the grind. But here's the question you didn't know you needed to ask: Could time-blocking actually be the most powerful form of self-care?Even though we've all done it at some point, we don't really enjoy time-blocking. And that's probably because we don't yet understand the full power of our greatest productivity tool -- the calendar.Ah the calendar; that little grid we love (or more likely, hate) to fill with back-to-back meetings and never-ending deadlines. It feels like the calendar is the ball and chain that keeps us tied to our desks. And to some extent it is, but here's the surprising reality: using your calendar in the right way is the exact thing that gives you more freedom.Seriously! It's like a magic trick. You think it's taking away your time, but instead, it gives you more of it. And when you have more time, you have more freedom. If this all sounds confusing, let me explain.Full transcript can be found here: https://jimmyglenos.com/2024/09/30/could-time-blocking-be-the-self-care-you-never-knew-you-needed/ Learn more about Executive and Leadership Coaching at https://jimmyglenos.com/ #jimmyglenos #jglenos #unlocktheshortcut #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #leadershipcoaching #executivecoaching #podcast https://www.linkedin.com/in/jglenos/https://www.facebook.com/jglenos/https://www.instagram.com/jimmyglenos/https://youtube.com/@coachjimmyglenoshttps://shortcut.systeme.io/funhttps://calendly.com/jglenos/hellohttps://linktr.ee/jglenos

[Inhale ------ Exhale]Go ahead. You do it too. Take a nice deep breath. Come on…you know you want to.[Inhale ------ Exhale]That's it. Feels good, right?Of course it does. You're doing what comes naturally and easily with virtually no effort at all. Your body does this for you all day and all night automatically. Your brain keeps you alive and primed for peak performance via your breath. Don't believe me? Consider this. When you're sleeping, your brain provides a nice smooth deep rhythm coaxing you to sleep and keeping you there in sweet slumber. When you're physically active and exerting a lot of effort, your brain kicks things up a notch or two and gets you breathing faster and deeper because your body needs the extra oxygen to help repair your muscles and fuel your vascular system with super rich blood. When you're frightened, scared, or surprised your brain triggers a quick, abrupt inhale quite unlike your normal or fatigued breathing. This quick inhale is critical to raising your alertness and awareness so your eyes get bigger and your senses become more acute. And when you find yourself relieved from your fright, you let out a long, slow exhale. And that is because your brain now knows that all is well, and you will soon find yourself back in your normal, natural breathing rhythm. The fascinating thing is you never have to tell your brain how to breathe. It just does it for you. It puts you in the best possible position to handle the task at hand. And it does it with the breath. Now what if you could do that yourself? Put yourself in the best possible position for the task at hand? That would be pretty amazing, right?Full transcript can be found here:https://jimmyglenos.com/2024/06/29/3-ways-to-use-breath-to-get-you-out-of-trouble/ Learn more about Executive and Leadership Coaching at https://jimmyglenos.com/ #jimmyglenos #jglenos #unlocktheshortcut #leadnsucceed #leadershipcoaching #mentalfitnesscoaching #executivecoaching #podcast https://www.linkedin.com/in/jglenos/https://www.facebook.com/jglenos/https://www.instagram.com/jimmyglenos/https://youtube.com/@coachjimmyglenoshttps://linktr.ee/jglenos

Throwing a ball, kicking a ball, cooking an egg, reading a book, delivering a speech, delegating a task, or giving feedback.Ok, maybe all of those don't come naturally. But they can all be done with a single action. Other skills take time to develop and hone, like throwing a strike, scoring a goal, making an omelet, writing a book, or motivating someone to positive action. And then there are behaviors or qualities that require consistent, continuous actions that lead to greater success. Being a pro athlete, being a chef, keynoting a conference, or being a respected leader. Each of these can withstand miscalculations, missteps, and even mistakes, because these things happen. And when they do, we stop, review, and then get back in the saddle and make things right. But there is one quality that is much more vulnerable to miscalculations and mistakes. You've probably heard of the 5 Whys Method. It's the exercise that has you ask 5 “Why” questions to help you get to the root cause of a problem. We typically use this method of questioning for troubleshooting issues, quality improvement, or process analysis. It goes something like this: We are behind schedule with updating the training program again this week. Why?Because we don't have time to make the updates to the training program. Why?Because it takes a long time for us to enter the HR data into the spreadsheets. Why?Because each week, some of the data is either missing or incorrect. Why?Because it is prone to human error because the entire process is manual entry from paper forms. Why?Because we don't have an integrated software system between the HR and Training Departments. Now, looking at purchasing an integrated software system may seem like an obvious solution to an ongoing problem, but oftentimes we simply try to bandage the symptom (in this case, not enough time to perform a task).Full transcript can be found here: https://jimmyglenos.com/2022/11/07/youd-better-whys-up/Learn more about Leadership and Mental Fitness Coaching: jimmyglenos.com#jimmyglenos #jglenos #unlocktheshortcut #leadnsucceed #leadershipcoaching #mentalfitnesscoaching #executivecoachinghttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jglenos/https://www.facebook.com/jglenos/https://twitter.com/jglenoshttps://www.instagram.com/jimmyglenos/https://linktr.ee/jglenos

By now, you've probably heard the term “quiet quitting.” It also goes by the possibly more accurate and certainly more comical term “acting your wage.” Though these terms are new, the idea is not. We've gone through decades and decades of people doing their jobs. Nothing more, nothing less…just doing the job they were hired and get paid to do.And we, as leaders, should be grateful for that, not disappointed in their behavior. After all, we lured them in with a specific job description, we carefully interviewed them and they told us that they could perform those duties, and then we decided to allow them to take that job. And in exchange we would pay them to complete the tasks outlined on that same job description. Seems like a fair deal. So why are we suddenly surprised when people are not going above and beyond, not going the extra mile, not seeking more responsibility, not working longer hours, and not putting in 110%? Full transcript can be found here: https://jimmyglenos.com/2022/10/14/dealing-with-quiet-quitting/Learn more about Leadership and Mental Fitness Coaching: jimmyglenos.com#jimmyglenos #jglenos #unlocktheshortcut #leadnsucceed #leadershipcoaching #mentalfitnesscoaching #executivecoachinghttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jglenos/https://www.facebook.com/jglenos/https://twitter.com/jglenoshttps://www.instagram.com/jimmyglenos/https://linktr.ee/jglenos

You're watching a video of a vendor pitching their latest product, but the audio is about a half second behind the video. You're slightly put off by the misalignment, but you can handle it. It's kind of like watching a poorly dubbed kung fu movie from the 70s, but not nearly as entertaining. But as it continues, it becomes super annoying to watch and listen to because the timing is so far off, and quite frankly, you're losing interest in what they are selling. After about 53 seconds you decide to turn it off and do something else. Why?Full transcript can be found here: https://jglenos.com/2021/10/05/are-your-audio-and-video-synced/Learn more about Executive Coaching: jglenos.com and leadnsucceed.com#jglenos #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #performancecoaching   Jimmy GlenosExecutive Coach/Performance CoachLEAD+SUCCEED Podcastjglenos.comjimmy@jglenos.com954.415.3168https://www.linkedin.com/in/jglenos/https://www.facebook.com/leadandsucceed/https://twitter.com/jglenoshttps://www.instagram.com/jimmyglenos/

It's fourth and long with just two and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter. You have the ball on the fifty-yard line and you are behind by three points. What do you do?Not an easy decision. But think about what got you here. Which players were instrumental in bringing you this close to victory? Which players will get you in the win column? And do they play offense or defense? Or do they play on special teams? No matter how you break it down, all players and teams are critical to success in winning a football game.Full transcript can be found here: https://jglenos.com/2021/09/09/business-plays-offense-defense-and-special-teams/ Learn more about Executive Coaching: jglenos.com and leadnsucceed.com#jglenos #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #performancecoaching

You're walking through the halls of your workplace offices, as you do every day, and you see that people are quietly keeping at their work and looking rather productive. You turn the corner and find two employees in a conversation, and as you get closer you realize they are actually in a bit of a heated discussion. You don't want to pry, so you turn around and head back to your office.Let's face it, confrontation is not your strong suit, and you really aren't in the mood right now to settle a workplace dispute. Plus, these are adults. They can figure it out, right? But why are they arguing in the first place? You're a good, strong leader. You should have seen this coming. What happened? Do you need to be stricter with policy? Do you need to get in and manage more acutely? Or have you not been paying enough attention to your people and the company as a whole? It could be all of these things, or it could be none of them. But one thing's for sure. You need to get a better grasp of what is going on in and around your people because your and their success depends on it.Full transcript can be found here:https://jglenos.com/2021/08/31/welcome-to-the-dance/Learn more about Executive Coaching: jglenos.com or leadnsucceed.com#jglenos #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #performancecoaching

You're anxiously anticipating getting everyone back in the office. Human Resources is about to send out the email communication dictating how people will be coming back to the workplace. You've read the communication and you've talked with a few of your peers. Everyone is on board, but you also sense your remote workforce is less than eager to get back in the office. So what are you going to do to create a sense of trust, belonging, and safety? More importantly, how are you going to convince your team they need to get back into the old routine of coming into the office each day?Change is hard, and as leaders, we all need to deal with change before our teams do. We need to understand the four stages that people go through and how to handle each stage effectively and empathically. So what are the four stages of change? Let's consider change like it's a four-room apartment.Contentment, Denial, Confusion, and Renewal.Full transcript can be found here:https://jglenos.com/2021/08/17/change-is-a-four-room-apartment/Learn more about Executive Coaching: jglenos.com or leadnsucceed.com#jglenos #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #performancecoaching

You've asked one of your direct reports to see you in your office. It's about a recent mistake they've made and you want to provide some feedback and maybe a little coaching. They enter the room sheepishly and slump down in the chair opposite your desk. You don't want to beat around the bush, so you ask, “What the heck happened with the Smith account?”They remain quiet and then softly reply, “I thought it was the right thing to do.”You are getting a little hotter now and shoot back, “Why would you think that is the right thing to do?”If you've been on either side of this conversation, you are not alone. We all have been either the give or receiver of what some people call “feedback”.Obviously, these are just the opening lines of a more crucial feedback conversation, but notice how this all started? It began with an accusatory question and continued in that same fashion. You can imagine this conversation did not get much better after this opening gambit. So what happened? And how can we do better when we seek answers and want to provide good feedback and coaching?Full transcript can be found here: https://jglenos.com/2021/08/03/the-words-we-use-say-a-lot/Learn more about Executive Coaching: jglenos.com or leadnsucceed.comSee most recent posts: #jglenos #leadnsucceed #executivecoaching #performancecoaching
