086: Coping with Birth Trauma ft. Ayelet Schwell

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2021 50:32

Tune in as Kay and Ayelet discuss experiences with birth trauma, misconceptions associated with birth work, and how doulas are helping moms all over the world! Ayelet Schwell is a doula, speaker, and educator for mothers and birth professionals. Over her 16 years of working in perinatal care, she has used her experience, knowledge, and intuition to guide mothers as they create their own positive, powerful birth stories. Ayelet believes in the right of every birth-giver to have autonomy, dignity, and respect in their perinatal care and works towards that goal in her doula work and in her work with mothers who have experienced birth trauma through the Birthing Our Stories workshops. Her experience has taught her that there are four things that will make or break a positive birth experience: Power, Voice, Choice, and Support. Following her own experience of birth trauma, she found that as soon as people heard she was a doula, they would start pouring out their birth stories - often very difficult, scary, or traumatic experiences. She wanted to find a way to give those stories their space and to truly be an ally to the mothers who needed a safe place to share those experiences and reclaim their intrinsic power, and that’s how Birthing Our Stories came to be. Ayelet is passionate about raising awareness about the reality of living with birth trauma and giving hope that there can be healing and there can be joy. She has been a speaker at the Naturelle VBAC Summit, and the Jewish Mamas Movement Summit, and has been a guest on the Faith Breathed Hope Podcast, and the Successful Diligence podcast, as well as speaking at local venues and being a guest expert in pregnancy and birth-related online forums. As a mom of 6, wife, and business owner, she gets by on baby snuggles, coffee, and sci-fi novels. She has been blessed to serve with many organizations like African Leadership, Refugees Ministries, World Vision, Second Harvest Food Bank, Feeding America and various other organizations working with different communities of immigrants, homeless, gang members, and prisoners. While working within these communities through the years, she has grown to learn from, appreciate and develop a love for those from very different walks of life. She has seen in her work that we must NOT group people into large categories of race, faith groups, politics or orientation, but see them as individuals with their own unique stories. In these days of division and vitriolic language being thrown at each other, we must practice “Radical Compassion” towards each other. Cheryl has partnered with the international organization, Preemptive Love and has developed a program called “Gatherings” in Nashville where people from different cultures, races, faiths, politics are able to come together in an environment where everyone has a voice, a place to be heard and valued. The idea is to promote healing from all that is tearing us apart by listening to each others’ stories, understanding the struggles of the marginalized and minorities, and seeing one another through eyes of compassion. These connections foster empathy and compassion so that when we face the fears and anger in the world or disagree with our neighbors, our first choice will be understanding and Radical Compassion. Cheryl is married to Brian, a concert artist and mother of three wonderful, amazing children. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/myse/support
