EPISODE 489 - Author Darlene Campos Shares the Amazing Story of Holocaust Survivor Pete PhilippsHello! Hola! I'm Darlene P. Campos, an Ecuadorian-American author who is also a proud Houstonian.I earned my BA in English-Creative Writing with a Medicine and Society Studies minor from the University of Houston (Go Coogs!) and my MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Texas at El Paso (Go Miners!).I am the author of the young adult novels Behind Mount Rushmore, Summer Camp is Cancelled, and Heaven Isn't Me, traditionally published by Vital Narrative Press.Pete Philipps' InterviewPete grew up in Essen, a major industrial city on Germany's Ruhr River. His father worked as a cattle hide dealer for an international trading company in nearby Mühlheim. His mother was a designer for a fashionable women's dress shop. Pete, his younger twin brothers, and parents lived together in an apartment.1933–39: Pete had barely passed his first birthday when the Nazis came to power. His father realized the danger that now faced Jews in Germany, and the family left for Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1936. Pete attended Jewish school there, but the times were unsettling. In fall 1938, the Sudetenland, a region of Czechoslovakia, was incorporated into the Nazi Reich, and the following March, German troops marched into Prague. Shortly thereafter, Pete's family left for Italy, where they settled in the Genoa suburbs. There, they were attacked by local antisemitic fascists. Soon after Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, the Philippses immigrated to Ecuador.1940–45: In Quito, the Philippses joined the growing colony of refugees from Germany. Pete attended a private boys' school. His father set up business making margarine, while his mother did clothing alterations and knitting. In May 1941, just six months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Philippses arrived in the United States. Pete's father returned to his former company. After the war, Pete learned that his paternal grandmother, who had fled earlier to the Netherlands, had been deported to Auschwitz, where she perished. He completed his education and, after a tour of military duty in Germany, became a journalist for the New York Times.https://www.ushmm.org/remember/holocaust-survivors/volunteers/pete-philippshttps://www.ushmm.org/https://www.darlenepcampos.com/___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca
In episode two of this two-part conversation, interdisciplinary scholars Miranda Belarde-Lewis and Temi Odumosu continue to delve into the possibilities that emerge when arts pedagogy is integrated within the STEM-oriented setting of an information school. Belarde-Lewis and Odumosu describe their practices of teaching, curation, and research while discussing insights, methods, and core skills they have developed along the way. Together, they highlight why it's important to move beyond the siloed nature of traditional disciplinary boundaries to seek truly polyvocal contexts and collaborations. The conversation is moderated by David Strand. Miranda Belarde-Lewis (Zuni/Tlingit) is an associate professor of North American Indigenous Knowledge at the iSchool and an independent curator. Indigenous knowledge systems are central to her work as she examines the role of social media and the arts in protecting, documenting and perpetuating Native information and knowledge. Her work highlights and celebrates Native artists, their processes, and the exquisite pieces they create. She has worked with tribal, city, state and federal museums to create Native-focused educational programming, publications and art exhibitions. Belarde-Lewis holds a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Arizona, an M.A. in Museology and Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Washington. Temi Odumosu is assistant professor at the UW Information School and an independent curator and cultural heritage consultant. Drawing on her training in art history and international teaching experience in media, visual communication, and cultural studies, she takes a creative approach to mentoring information professionals. For over two decades she has been interrogating the visual politics and legacies of colonialism, activating collections as sites of memory and conscience, and collaborating with contemporary artists, designers, and curators to communicate unfinished histories more sensitively. Her current research and curatorial work centers wellbeing, considers the ethics of digitization in the age of AI and big data, and engages Black archival histories and possible futures. Odumosu is author of the award-winning book Africans in English Caricature 1769-1819: Black Jokes White Humour (2017). She holds both a Ph.D. and MPhil in Art History from the University of Cambridge (King's College). David Strand is an editor, curator, and emerging informational professional pursuing his M.A. in Library & Information Science at the University of Washington. He currently works as the graduate research assistant for the Center for Advances in Libraries, Museums, and Archives (CALMA) at the University of Washington Information School. Strand has over a decade of experience working in the arts and museums. He previously worked at the Frye Art Museum as associate curator and prior to that as the manager of exhibitions and publications. Strand holds a B.A. in Visual Art and English-Creative Writing from Seattle University.
Send us a textHappy New Year! It's amazing how things come full circle. After having Steven Dietz' wife, Allison Gregory, on last episode, we were privileged enough to have Laura Annawyn Shamas on Playwright's Spotlight, who happened to work them both in Minneapolis at The Playwright's Center. In this episode, Laura and I discuss a playwright's involvement in a piece, tech and costume "covers" (a term I just learned), "fourth" grade playwriting, inspirations, what makes a great director, and structure and staging. We also delve into approaching character and the symbology of names, virtual theatre vs live performance, surprising and caring about the audience, archetypes and character flaws, playing with structure, and developing and trusting a community of playwrights. As always, it's an insightful episode that Laura shares her history and experience in the craft of playwriting. It's a wonderful conversation to motivate and inspire playwrights of every level to get to work. I hope you enjoy this episode of Playwright's Spotlight and, as always... keep writing.Laura Annawyn Shamas (Playwright) is a 2023 winner of the Los Angeles New Play Project Award. Shamas has written over 40 plays, including Circular (published in 2024 by Next Stage Press), Portrait of a Nude, Lady-Like, Chasing Honey, The Other Shakespeare, Talking Leaves (winner, Garrard Best Play Award at Five Civilized Tribes Museum), and Amelia Lives (winner, Fringe First Award at Edinburgh Festival Fringe). Her short play, Seeds, won the Von Marie Atchley Award for Excellence in Playwriting from Native Voices. She worked as a dramaturge for Native Voices at the Autry for their Short Play Festivals from 2021-2023 and Festival of New Plays (2024). She graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Theatre, the University of Colorado at Boulder with an M.A. in English/Creative Writing, and Pacifica Graduate Institute with an M.A. and Ph.D. in Mythological Studies. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kathryn Dodson, author of the book Portrait of Deception. Kathryn writes about women who have to become their own heroes - whether they're solving a crime or figuring out the next phase of their lives. She grew up writing and riding horses in far West Texas. She graduated from SMU in English/Creative Writing and went on to get an MBA from Thunderbird and a PhD from Clemson. Now she spends her days writing about women who become their own heroes. She has worked on both sides of the US/Mexico border and has held jobs with governments, chambers of commerce, and other businesses. Kathryn loves to travel and has visited 30 countries and 44 states. This inspires her novels about interesting women in fascinating places. Originally from Texas, Kathryn had the good fortune to live in Spain, Mexico, Tanzania, and several U.S. states, and the good sense to end up in Carlsbad, California. She loves travel, fiery food, hanging out with the neighbors in the front yard on Friday evenings, and reading. In my book review, I stated Portrait of Deception is a wonderful suspense novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Margo, a photographer on her way to fame, soon finds herself entrenched in a madman's attempt to take over first his country and then those countries around him. Although she's hired to take photos of the despot, she soon learns that his plan includes owning her. Unless she can escape, she'll never leave the grounds - at least not alive. Unfortunately, Margo is not completely innocent. Can she figure out how to get free? Save her family and friends? Find a new path forward? This is a gritty story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. But it is also character-driven enough that you cheer Margo as she learns lessons about herself and her past and makes decisions for a better future. Whenever you're feeling stuck, peruse Melissa's thoughtfully compiled tips and exercises and you'll be creating magic in no time.” – Suzy Batiz, Chief Executive and Visionary Officer, ~Pourri, The Makers of Poo~Pourri, supernatural, Alive OS® “Melissa's words are authentic and important. She is a great listener and now shares reality-based strategies for imagining your own imperfect, fulfilling life.” – Martha Hennessey, Former New Hampshire State Senator / House of Representative “This is the book for a mom who wants a second jet engine to embark on her own journey from thinking she will have to wait another lifetime to dream big to knowing she can take steps right now to uncover and do what she would find more fulfilling at this life stage. Melissa writes both intimately and conversationally about topics that many moms around the world can relate to (some dads too). She invites the reader into a personal and deep journey about topics that are crucially important to uncover what would make a mom truly happy to work on...even after the kids are in bed. It was an honor and a pleasure to speak with her for an interview, which she has included excerpts of in this book, too!” - Ken Honda, Japan's bestselling zen millionaire, author of Happy Money: The Japanese Art of Making Peace with Your Money Moms like us with big dreams and school-age kids: For moms like me, the pandemic was an opportunity to re-evaluate and course-correct things in our lives we weren't thrilled with. Coming out of this period, sluggish yet motivated, so many of us can use this book to help us wake up! If you're looking to refresh, reenergize, and yes, reimagine a better version of your life, this book is for you. I loved the hilarious, yet poignant stories about motherhood today and the window into the world of those who've gone for it – and did it. - Macollvie Neel, Brooklyn, NY “The words: imagination, play and fun are not the usual things we as mothers think of when wondering how to get a grip back on our career and I believe it provides a really fresh take and lots of food for thought for mothers reading it. Its tone is so energetic and fresh!” – Alejandra Molina, Coach, Miami, Florida “Melissa is a mom of three with big dreams who tells it like it is. She draws on her own experiences and the experiences of professionals she's interviewed for her podcast to reflect on the plight of the mother. How do women conform to or challenge the traditional “mom script”? If you're a mom, what can you do to break the “cultural glass ceiling” to be yourself and a great parent, all without having to force yourself into a mom mold that doesn't fit you? Melissa is like a great friend, honest and wise and funny, telling you about her life and asking you to reflect on yours. This book is a great purchase for moms in every stage of life.” – Maureen Turner Carey, Librarian, Austin, Texas “In her book, Melissa shows us that motherhood does not have to be a pause or an end to your pre-child self. With guidance from her podcast guests, she encourages us to think big, find what lights us up, think big, and move towards our goals with the steps that fit the reality of our lives as they are today. In doing so we honor and inspire our child(ren), and our own inner child.” – Katherine Dzierzynski, Museum Group Sales, Forest Hills, NY

Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees
Many adoptees - myself included - delay the search for our birth mothers for fear of rejection. We don't believe we could handle it. We are still feeling the aftershocks of the initial rejection. Lori shares what she's learned about surviving rejection, underestimating our emotional resilience and ability to bounce back. We both loved this deep and profound conversation and hope you do too. Here's a bit about Lori and her book:Jakiela is a Professor of English/Creative Writing at The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, where she directs the Creative & Professional Writing Program. She writes a monthly column, "Stories of Our Neighbors"–modeled on the work of the great oral historian Studs Terkel–for Pittsburgh Magazine, and is the recipient of multiple Golden Quill Awards from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania. She has taught in the graduate MFA program at Chatham University, in the undergraduate writing program at The State University of New York at Purchase, classes and workshops for Creative Nonfiction Foundation, and is currently on the adjunct faculty of the Doctor of Ministry program in Creative Writing at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. A former international flight attendant, she lives in her hometown, Trafford, PA, with her husband, the author Dave Newman, and their children. After her adoptive mother's death, Lori Jakiela, at the age of forty, begins to seek the identity of her birth parents. In the midst of this loss, Jakiela also finds herself with a need to uncover her family's medical history to gather answers for her daughter's newly revealed medical ailments. This memoir brings together these parallel searches while chronicling intergenerational questions of family. Through her work, Jakiela examines both the lives we are born with and the lives we create for ourselves. Desires for emotional resolution comingle with concerns of medical inheritance and loss in this honest, humorous, and heartbreaking memoir.https://www.amazon.com/Belief-Its-Kind-Truth-Maybe/dp/1938769422https://twitter.com/lorijakielahttps://www.linkedin.com/in/lori-jakiela-2555716https://www.lorijakiela.net/

Book time to chat with Jeff Utecht Lyndsey D'Arcangelo I never set out to be a sports writer. I grew up in Buffalo, New York wanting to be the next Judy Blume and a bestselling author. But life had a different plan. After graduating from Randolph Macon College in 2000 with a degree in English/Creative Writing, I set off on a twisty writing journey. I spent time as a web writer for a college, a high school sports journalist for a small town weekly paper, and a copywriter at The Buffalo News. Eventually, I combined all of the skills I learned along the way, and began a career as a freelance writer — writing articles for print, taglines for advertising companies, feature profiles for a national lesbian magazine, and working on my first young adult LGBTQ fiction book. Hey friends, It's Tamara here. I hope you enjoyed the previous 3 audio fiction episodes from the Food for Thought project. As you know, Artist Soapbox produces original scripted audio fiction such as the three FFT projects, as well as interviews with artists about their creative process. We're back to the interview/conversational format with this episode and most of the ones to follow for this season. Today, I'm dipping in to introduce 2 of our new podcast hosts – Lormarev Jones and Griffin James. If you've been a long time listener of Artist Soapbox, then you will likely know them and you can also read their https://artistsoapbox.org/about/#team (bios on the Artist Soapbox website). Have you looked at our beautiful website? I am so in love with it. Now, Lormarev and Griffin contain multitudes of course, but here are some bread crumbs for your to follow into their conversation: Lormarev Jones is an Educator, Director/Choreographer, and Actor and Intimacy Director. Lormarev currently teaches at Meredith College while continuing to freelance in all her areas of expertise. She has been interviewed on the Soapbox several times, acted in an episode of ASBX shorts and will be super featured in the upcoming scripted audio fiction piece: Jesus Pancake. She is well-known as a hydration advocate. Griffin James is an interdisciplinary theatre maker and writer local to the triangle area. They have a degree in English Creative Writing from NC State where they were involved with the university theatre as a performer, stage manager, and more. Griffin was the production manager for all six of the ASBX Shorts and all 3 of the Food for Thought Projects. Whew, my blood runs cold thinking about all of that logistical management. You can also catch them voicing the Drunk College Student in I'm Not Here Right Now. (Griffin was not type cast in that role.) In this episode, you'll hear these two friends introduce themselves and each other. You'll get a sense of their style and vibe, and what they'll be focusing on in their own episodes this Season. Lormarev and Griffin are two of my favorite people, and I know you will love them too. I'm so grateful that they have agreed to step in as hosts. And guess what? In the next episode, you'll hear me introduce two more of my favorite people and guest hosts, Juliana Finch and the inimitable Mara Thomas. So stay tuned for that. Though Heath Wilcock started copywriting almost 10 years ago, his love for writing goes back much further. With a bachelor's in English/Creative Writing, a master's in Fiction and a love for comedic improv, Heath is able to expertly adapt the voice of his copywriting to market products from healthy and beauty to Magnetic Marketing offers such as the MIFGE and the No BS Newsletter (discussed in episode 603!). How does he do it? Despite his love for creativity in writing, Heath heavily emphasizes to Dave the need for copywriters to remove the frills and research their audience in order to best speak truth to the product. Heath also reveals to Dave some of his specific methods for researching his audience and using the data he collects to communicate the right message using the right words.
