We've seen all this before. Oklahoma State gets off to a hot start, rises up the College Football Rankings, and gets itself into position to make a run at a conference title, or even to breathe the air of cross-state Big Brother Oklahoma. Baker Mayfield finally got traded from the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, as Carolina sent a conditional 5th round draft choice to the Browns for the former No.1 Pick in the NFL Draft. The Panthers will pay $4.85 million of Mayfield's salary, while the Browns will pay $10.5 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Mayfield agreed to convert the remainder of his $18.8 million salary into incentives to facilitate the deal, which is pending a physical. Mayfield can earn back that money based on team performance, a source said. Now Mayfield and Sam Darnold, who competed with each other to become the No. 1 pick in 2018, will compete again in training camp to vie for the right to be the Panthers' starter this season, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. If Mayfield wins the job, his first starting assignment will be against the Browns, who are scheduled to visit Carolina in Week 1. The Browns are currently 1-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook. You don't have to like it, but the Truth is the Truth is the Truth -- NO MATTER HOW UGLY IT MAY BE. And UGLY, is all you can call Lamar Jackson when he's throwing the ball past 15 yards. He's not fitting balls into small windows, hitting receivers along the sideline or corner of the end zone, and you're certainly not going to mistake him for Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson. Lamar is a great athlete, possibly among the best to ever play the game. His speed and agility are completely off the charts, and if he suited up with a zero behind that 8 on his jersey, he'd probably be among the best pass-catchers in the game DAY 1. He'll never be one of the best pass-throwers, and it doesn't matter how many Ravens fans throw a fit over it... John Harbaugh and Greg Roman have built an offense that works great for what Jackson IS great at, making people miss and using his athleticism to get into the end zone... But no marquee receiver will ever choose Baltimore as a free agent with Lamar Jackson as its QB1. Nor will one stay around at the end of his rookie contract... Tight ends can flourish because they work closer to the line and present bigger targets than most wideouts. Explosive offenses need explosive pass catchers, and QBs that can sling it. The Ravens have neither at this point. You need but watch Jackson with an eye not blinded by love for your team or an offense that makes his abilities look like enough to win it all.
