"A blockade is a tool of war as old as the sea itself, but in 2026, the question isn't just about who has the biggest ships—it's about who still respects the law." Donald Rothwell, Professor of International Law at the ANU, joins the show to dissect the US-led blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. With the blockade reaching its 24-hour mark, the world is watching to see if this ancient tactic of naval warfare can still be enforced in a modern, "rogue" geopolitical climate.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on “Talk About Las Vegas With Ira,” Ira sits down with legendary Las Vegas bookmaker Art Manteris, author (with Matt Birkbeck) of "The Bookie." For more than four decades, Art helped shape the modern sportsbook while running operations at iconic Las Vegas properties including the Stardust, Caesars, and the Hilton. In this fascinating conversation, he shares why he decided to write "The Bookie" and reflects on a career spent at the center of one of Las Vegas's most exciting—and closely watched—industries. Art talks about arriving in Las Vegas before he ever entered the race and sportsbook business, and how once he did, there was no turning back. He discusses the thrill of working in sports betting for more than 43 years, where balancing revenue, compliance, and guest service was essential to running what he calls “pretty well-oiled machines.” The conversation also explores Nevada's long-standing model for regulating sports betting, why Art believes federal intervention isn't the answer, and how legislation such as the Wire Act has unintentionally created complications for the industry. He also explains the steps states can take to responsibly manage sports wagering as technology and mobile betting continue to expand the market—especially among younger bettors. Along the way, Art shares stories about some of the colorful figures who shaped the world of sports betting, including legendary oddsmaker Roxy Roxborough and famed sports bettor Billy Walters. He also reflects on the challenges of guest service in a high-stakes environment and the evolving relationship between professional sports leagues and the gambling industry. Packed with insider perspective, Vegas history, and unforgettable characters, this episode offers a rare look inside the world of sportsbooks from one of the men who helped define it. BT & Sal dive into the uproar over the Mets losing elite closer Edwin Diaz to the Dodgers for a mere three years and $$69$ million, especially after signing Devin Williams for three years and $$51$ million. Sal argues that the $$18$ million difference is "absurd" and demands David Stearns justify the move, unless Diaz simply refused to return. The hosts confront angry Mets fans, reminding them that the team won only 83 games with Diaz, and that Stearns must be allowed to execute his "vision" to build a World Series winner. However, the pressure is immense, with fans now threatening to turn on Stearns and demanding he "Sign Alonso today" to prevent a total fan meltdown. The segment concludes by exploring whether a Williams/Suárez bullpen tandem could actually be an upgrade over last year's relief unit.

BT & Sal ignite a debate over Mets President David Stearns' disciplined, non-budging stance on a three-year contract for Pete Alonso. Sal believes Alonso is "100% gone" for at least four years elsewhere, but Tierney respects Stearns' hard line—if he wins! The pressure is immense: if Stearns lets fan-favorite Alonso walk and the team loses, he's a "dead man." The discussion heats up over the possibility of the Mets pursuing Kyle Schwarber, with the hosts agreeing that if Stearns gives Schwarber (who is two years older) more years or money than Alonso, it would be a "dirty" move and a massive blunder. Callers chime in, suggesting front-loaded deals, while the hosts ultimately acknowledge that Stearns must be allowed to build the team his way, or else the model breaks. The excitement builds imagining a Lindor-Schwarber-Soto three-man tandem.

This episode dives deep into the "Ambition vs. The Spreadsheet" dilemma, exploring how Unai Emery's brilliant tactical success has collided head-on with the Premier League's unforgiving Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). We break down why the club was forced to sell key players like Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey, and how the rules incentivize selling homegrown talent. Is Villa a victim of its own ambition, or a symbol of a system that punishes clubs for daring to challenge the elite? We analyze their high-energy playing style and ballooning wage bill to reveal a club masterfully managed on the field but trapped by a financial paradox.Aston Villa, Premier League, PSR Rules, Unai Emery, football finance

Those shortcomings have been evidenced not only by the Crimson Tide's first loss to Top-Ranked Tennessee in 16 seasons, but by would-be losses to Texas (minus its star quarterback for most of the game in Week 2) and Jimbo Fisher's now-(3-5) Texas A&M Aggies (in Tuscaloosa no less), a team many have characterized as a complete dumpster fire after opening the season ranked as high as 6th in various polls. #collegefootball #CFP #CFBPlayoff #TCU #tcufootball #oklahoma #oklahomasooners #texaslonghorns #Alabama #tennesseefootball #tennesseevsgeorgia #georgiabulldogs #clemsonfootball #ohiostatebuckeyes #ohiostatefootball #ohiostate #Alabama #RollTide #ugafootball #KirbySmart #tamu #aggieland #JimboFisherRumors #jimbofishertamu ********* GET THAT HOODIE THE OKLAHOMA COACHES WORE at the ISU game! Matching electricity supply and demand is a high-wire balancing act. As we add more solar, wind and batteries, and shut down thermal generation, it shifts the balance. New kinds of distributed resources can help to balance things out -- but they also make grid management more complex. In our fourth episode of season 1, Dr. Melissa Lott explores the new ways to manage the zero-carbon grid. We'll revisit the Texas grid disaster of 2021. Why did the electricity system nearly go down for weeks or months? And could we have blunted the outages with different ways of balancing the grid? Guests: Catherine Traywick and Elta Kolo. The Big Switch is produced by Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy in partnership with Post Script Media. Our producers are Daniel Woldorff, Dalvin Aboagye and Stephen Lacey.  A special thanks to Kirsten Smith, Genna Morton, Artealia Juilliard and Kyu Lee.
