I think balance is a myth and if I need to prioritise one thing in my life, then something else will have to come second. I'm ok with that, are you?And if we give ourselves permission to not do it all - can we extend that same level of empathy to the families we work with?Talking about all this in the episode - let me know your thoughts! How do we extend the reach of a genogram? Yes, genograms are essential to our understanding of family networks and narratives, but what if the people influencing us the most are the ones we see every morning when we scroll social media? Are we including virtual contexts and connections in our assessments? And how do we do that in a non judgmental way?In this episode I talk about the importance of considering virtual influences, on both ourselves and the people we support. This episode is really one big question. As social work podcasts increase (which is a great thing!) how do we as a collective, manage our responsibility to protect guests and ensure information is shared and not exploited?I don't have answers, but I'm hoping someone who listens to this might help me formulate some thoughts. It always feels scary to share my own experience but I wouldn't ask for transparency from others if I wasn't also willing to be transparent myself. I always feel uncomfortable talking about money but equally discomfort is a feeling that I now associate with change, and I see that as a positive.Get in touch: vicki@socialworksorted.com Lets connect! To book in a free 15 minute chat with me, to talk about training, development, courses or membership email vicki@socialworksorted.com Sign up to my free newsletter Join The Collective Ebook Guides Email: vicki@socialworksorted.comLinkedIn: Vicki Shevlin Instagram.com/@vickishevlin_Youtube.com/@socialworksortedFacebook.com/socialworksortedDisclaimer Thank you so much for listening. As social workers, how often do we hold the expectation that people should tell us the truth? How does that contradict with our mainstream entertainment, a tv show that is focused on lies and deception? In this short episode I'm inviting you to think about why people lie, and why we should avoid taking it personally as social workers. As a parent and a social worker I consume content created by parents and for parents. Social media is a minefield and we are in a time where 'honest' parenting is celebrated. But what happens when brutal honesty crosses a line into abusive or offensive language... should there be accountability about this? I see middle age white women talking about their children on social media using words that would be viewed as emotional abuse in a safeguarding context. I am so grateful to Dr Emma for joining me to unpick the nuances of this conversation. Join me and Dr Emma Svanberg as we talk about the intersections of parenting and social media, what we consume, what we share and the layers of influencing. In this incredible conversation I chat to Tamu Thomas, transformational life coach and former social worker, specialising in helping women achieve work-life harmony by aligning with their nervous system for holistic well-being. We talk about:The systemic and structural oppression in social work How to navigate the workplace as a new social workerThe value of regulating your nervous system Tamu's unique approach, rooted in somatic coaching and Polyvagal informed practice, empowers women to reconnect with their core selves, establish healthy boundaries, and build self-trust. Her work is particularly resonant in addressing the unique challenges faced by women of the global majority under what she describes as, "the trinity of oppression” - patriarchy, white supremacy and capitalism. In Tamu's words, "We don't need more self improvement, we need systemic change”. Her insights are essential for anyone seeking fulfilment, meaningful connection and joy in today's fast-paced world.Tamu's links:Book website: https://www.womenwhoworktoomuch.co/International Amazon link: https://hayhs.com/wwwtm_pp_pb_azLive Three Sixty website: https://www.livethreesixty.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tamu.thomas/Get in touch with me:Email: vicki@socialworksorted.comLinkedin: Vicki Shevlin Join my membership, The Collective: www.socialworksorted.com/thecollectiveInstagram: @socialworksorted Youtube.com/@socialworksorted *This podcast is a resource for newly qualified social workers.
