Many people find themselves in positions of leadership before they feel completely ready. Whether it's leading at work, in ministry, in family, or in the community, responsibility often arrives before confidence does. In this episode of How to Win, we talk about what it means to step into leadership even when you feel unprepared. Why many leaders grow into their roles over time and how humility, wisdom, and faith play an important role in the leadership journey. If you've ever felt unsure about your ability to lead, this conversation will offer perspective and encouragement.

Most startups don't fail from lack of ideas. They fail because people quit too early—or play it too safe. Graham Hobson built a €100M business starting with a simple frustration: printing photos of his kids. What followed wasn't a smooth growth curve—it was years of uncertainty, near failure, and painfully slow progress. In this conversation, we unpack the real psychology behind building something that lasts. Not hustle. Not hacks. But resilience, emotional insight, and the ability to keep going when the rewards are invisible. Graham shares how surviving the dot-com crash shaped his thinking, why hiring for values beats hiring for talent, and how the most successful businesses often start with deeply human problems. Reframe uncertainty as a normal part of meaningful progress Focus on emotional value, not just functional output Build resilience by solving problems, not avoiding them If you're building something—or thinking about it—this episode will change how you measure progress. In this solo episode of Referrals Done Right, Scott speaks directly to entrepreneurs, leaders, and professionals who feel stuck between where they are today and where they believe they are meant to go. Using the story of Moses and the burning bush as a framework, he explores the relationship between calling, self doubt, and action. Scott challenges the common belief that successful people wait until they feel ready before making a move. Instead, he argues that purpose often shows up in the middle of ordinary life and that growth begins when we respond to the opportunities and nudges already in front of usThroughout the episode, Scott breaks down the three stages of calling, conflict, and confirmation. He shares personal examples from his own life and business journey, highlighting how confidence is rarely present at the beginning of something meaningful. Rather than waiting for certainty, he encourages listeners to embrace discomfort, trust the process, and focus on taking the next step. This episode is a powerful reminder that readiness is often a myth, and that the future belongs to those willing to move forward before they feel fully prepared. You Will Learn:• Why purpose often appears during ordinary moments rather than dramatic breakthroughs• How self doubt and fear show up when you are standing near growth opportunities• Why waiting to feel ready can keep you stuck for years• The difference between confidence and commitment when pursuing a goal• How taking one imperfect step can create the momentum needed for clarity and growth---Scott Grates' Links:Referrals Done Right - https://www.referralsdoneright.orgReferrals Done Right FB Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/296359076662332Scott Grates Website - https://www.scottgrates.comLove Living Local  - https://www.instagram.com/lovelivinglocal315Scott's FB - https://www.facebook.com/scott.grates.1Scott's - https://www.instagram.com/scottgratesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@scott.grates

Have you ever felt like God was calling you into something bigger, but you didn't feel prepared enough to take the next step? In this message, we explore the story of Joshua and discover a powerful truth: God rarely calls people who feel ready. Instead, He forms them through obedience. From Joshua standing at the edge of the Jordan River to Jeremiah doubting his own ability, Scripture reminds us that readiness is not a prerequisite for God's calling, it's something He develops as we move forward in faith. If you've been battling fear, insecurity, doubt, or hesitation, this message will encourage you to stop focusing on what you lack and start trusting what God is forming within you. Your next step may be the very place where God reveals the strength, courage, and purpose He placed inside you all along.

Nobody feels ready when God calls. Not Moses at the burning bush. Not Gideon hiding in a winepress. Not Jeremiah, not Isaiah, not Joshua standing at the edge of the promised land with the weight of a nation on his shoulders. And probably not you — right now, with the assignment God has placed on your life that you keep telling yourself you'll pursue once you feel more prepared. In this episode, Pastor Joseph delivers a word for everyone who has been negotiating with God instead of obeying Him. Drawing from Exodus 3, Pastor Joseph unpacks the moment Moses stood before a burning bush — a bush supernaturally on fire but not consumed — and his first response was not worship. It was not obedience. It was a question: Who am I?It sounds like humility. It presents itself as humility. But Pastor Joseph teaches that more often than not, that question is fear wearing humility's clothing. Because true humility says, "I cannot do this in my own strength, but God can do it through me." Fear says, "I cannot do this — and therefore it cannot be done."Here is what changes everything: God never answered Moses's question. He didn't build his resume or validate his qualifications. He said four words — "I will be with you" — and made the entire question of Moses's readiness irrelevant. Because when God is with you, your adequacy is not the variable that determines the outcome. His is.If you have been waiting to feel ready, this episode is your burning bush moment. The call has been calling. The question is still on the table. Will you go?

In this episode, we sit down for a candid conversation about the five reasons people often fall short of what they are capable of becoming. We talk about the trap of waiting to feel ready, why over-preparing can become a form of procrastination, and how confidence is built by doing the thing before we feel fully qualified. We also explore why our environment matters, how the conversations around us shape our thinking, and why getting into bigger rooms can expand what we believe is possible. From there, we unpack the difference between motivation and discipline, why consistency can feel boring before it becomes powerful, and why the middle often feels like failure. I still remember the day I launched Foundr. After all that work, all that effort — I made $5.50. And when I told someone close to me, they laughed. I was embarrassed, jaded, and genuinely questioning whether any of it was worth it. Here's the truth: that feeling never fully goes away. It just shows up in different forms. And if you're avoiding it, you're avoiding the exact things that grow your business. In this episode, I share why embarrassment isn't a sign you're doing something wrong — it's a sign you're doing something that matters — and walk through the real stories, including one of our Foundr Plus members who went from terrified of founder-led content to selling out her brand in days. Here's what you'll take away: Why visibility isn't about confidence or personality — it's about reps, and what happens when you commit to showing up before you feel ready How Foundr Plus member Donna launched Journey, put herself out there, got a shoutout from Brittany Saunders, and sold out in days The pattern every successful founder shares: awkward beginnings that nobody sees, and what that means for where you are right now Why avoiding embarrassment doesn't protect you — it just slows your growth How the discomfort of posting, launching, pitching, and hiring compounds into a skill set that gets easier over time The reframe that changes everything: stop asking "what if this is embarrassing?" and start asking "what if this moves my business forward?" If you've been sitting on a piece of content, a product launch, or a partnership pitch because it doesn't feel ready — this episode will show you that the discomfort you're feeling isn't a warning sign. It's the starting point. If you're loving this solo series, I'd love to hear your feedback. Email me directly at nathan@foundr.com — I read every reply. Hope you enjoy it. A lot of people want to get into multifamily real estate. Very few ever actually take action. In this episode, I talk about my own journey from growing up without money, becoming a teacher, working side hustles for years, and slowly building my way into multifamily apartment investing. My mom was on Section 8 for much of my childhood. My dad was a waiter. Nobody around me was talking about apartment buildings, financial freedom, ownership, or investing. I had to completely rebuild my mindset over time while learning how to operate in an entirely different world. I share how I went from teaching, waiting tables, teaching surf lessons, building cutting boards in my garage, and struggling financially… to eventually owning and operating multifamily properties. But more importantly, I talk about the real thing that stops most people: Fear. Fear of sounding inexperienced. Fear of rejection. Fear of brokers not responding. Fear of asking dumb questions. Fear of making mistakes. Fear of looking unqualified. And the truth is… most new investors never even send offers. In this episode we talk about: • Why confidence usually comes after action, not before • Why consistency matters more than talent • How repetition builds skill and confidence over time • Why you need to get into real conversations with brokers and operators • The importance of underwriting reps and market exposure • Why most investors stay stuck in "learning mode" too long • How taking imperfect action changed my life This episode is for anyone who feels overwhelmed, intimidated, behind, or unsure of where to start in multifamily real estate. Send us Fan MailIn this verse-by-verse Bible study of Job 17–18, Reasoning Through the Bible explores one of the darkest moments in Job's story. Job says his spirit is broken, the grave is ready for him, and he can no longer see beyond his pain. This session speaks directly to those who have reached a low point and need to be reminded that life still has purpose, even in deep suffering. This study explains why Job's despair does not mean his life has lost meaning, why believers always retain purpose because they are made in the image of God, and why Christians should not wait until people are near death to repair relationships, show love, and be faithful friends. It also highlights the danger of a works-based, behavior-only view of God that leaves no room for grace or true relationship. The second half of the session turns to Bildad's speech in Job 18, where he becomes openly insulting, hypocritical, and more committed to being right than to helping Job. This episode shows how harsh theology can become cruel theology, and why suffering people need wise, compassionate counsel that looks deeper than outward circumstances. Topics in this episode include: Job 17 explained  Job 18 explained  when life feels ready to end  purpose in suffering  why believers always have purpose  Bildad's hypocrisy  retribution theology and its errors  why suffering is not always caused by sin  how to care for suffering people Reasoning Through the Bible is a verse-by-verse Bible teaching ministry committed to careful exposition, biblical context, and faithful application.Support the showThank you for listening!!  Please give us a five-star rating to help your podcast provider's algorithm spread RTTB among their listeners. You can find free study and leader resources at the following link - Resource Page - Reasoning Through the BiblePlease prayerfully consider supporting RTTB to help us to continue providing content and free resources. Feeling ready and being ready aren't the same! One of them can be influenced by a whole host of unrelated factors and the other one is based on facts. One depends on your mood, how much you want to listen to imposter syndrome today, or whether your old friends procrastination or perfectionism are knocking on your door. The other one is far more something that you can control.Taking the next step in any journey can be a bit scary because we're venturing into the unknown. But my question for you today is … is there something that you've been putting off doing, either in your business or personal life, because you don't yet “feel ready”? Have you ever stood in the middle of a life that looks really good on paper and still felt like something was off? Like a quiet voice whispering, this isn't it anymore...and you didn't know what to do with that? This week on the Found Podcast, I'm bringing you a conversation with my own coach, Katrina Klooster, and I think this one is going to land somewhere deep for a lot of you. Katrina is a life and leadership coach who specializes in helping high-achieving women navigate transitions, those in-between seasons when you've outgrown where you are but aren't sure where you're going. After nearly 15 years in education (as a high school Spanish teacher and instructional coach), Katrina followed her own winding, messy, non-linear path into building a coaching practice, and she brings all of that lived experience to the women she now serves. In this episode, we talk about: The moment Katrina knew she had outgrown teaching and why it took her so long to trust that feeling Burnout, shingles, and the culture of self-sacrifice we've normalized in education (and beyond) Why your non-linear path is not something to apologize for The 37-38-year-old awakening many women experience and what's actually happening beneath the surface How high-achieving women get stuck in golden handcuffs and what it takes to break free Why most women aren't afraid of failure...and what they're actually afraid of instead The grief that's woven into growth (and why we don't talk about it enough) What Katrina looks for in a coach and how to know if coaching is right for you Connect with Katrina: Website: katrinaklooster.com Instagram: @katrinaklooster (send her a DM!) We're continuing our Daughters Series with the story of Deborah — a fearless judge, prophetess, and leader who heard God's voice clearly and walked in radical obedience. We talk about what it actually looks like to hear from God in everyday life, why obedience isn't about getting recognition, and how God often uses the unseen and overlooked moments to shape us most deeply. Through Deborah's story, we're reminded that when God is on our side, we truly have nothing to fear — even when the odds feel impossible. What if the reason you don't feel confident… isn't because you're unqualified? In this solo episode, I share a simple but powerful shift that came out of a recent Seen & Safe group session—one that challenges the common belief that we need to become experts before we can show up fully. We often tell ourselves:“I need more training.”“I need more experience.”“I need to feel ready first.”But what if confidence doesn't come from mastery? What if it comes from something much more accessible? In this episode, I explore the idea that confidence is built through proximity over time—not perfection—and how our nervous system plays a central role in whether something feels safe or threatening. And yes… there's also a slightly chaotic (and slightly gross) story about my cats adjusting to a new litter robot that somehow brings this whole concept to life.If you've been circling something—public speaking, sharing your work, making a move in your business, or even just expressing yourself more honestly—this episode will help you understand what's actually getting in the way, and how to move forward in a way that feels grounded and doable. In this episode, we explore:• Why feeling “unskilled” is often a nervous system response, not a true lack of ability • The difference between mastery vs. familiarity—and why we confuse the two • How fear convinces you to delay action in the name of “preparation” • What actually builds confidence (hint: it's not more studying) • How to use graded exposure, self-soothing, and co-regulation to take your next step • Why safe, supportive spaces can accelerate your growth in ways you can't do alone If you're ready to stop waiting until you feel “ready” and start gently stepping into what's calling you, you're in the right place. And if you're looking for a space to practice this in real time, Seen & Safe is my small group coaching space for sensitive creatives, entrepreneurs, and humans in transition who want to build visibility with nervous system support. You can learn more or reach out here:

Workout procrastination often looks like a time problem on the surface. Sometimes it is really a pattern of waiting to feel more ready before taking action. That kind of delay can quietly hand too much power to mood and emotion. A smaller first move made sooner can break the pattern and help movement and exercise feel more doable in real life. And when the moment came to advocate for your work, you said something like, “I think the team covered it well. I can share more later if it would be helpful.”Later never came. The decision was made without you.In this episode of Communicate to Lead, Kele Belton breaks down why waiting until you feel ready keeps high-performing women leaders invisible, and gives you a specific, repeatable method for communicating your value with clarity, authority, and impact, even when conditions are not perfect. As Part 3 of the three-part April visibility series (following How Perfectionism Keeps Women Leaders Invisible and What Unsupportive Work Environments Do to Your Leadership), this Thursday's deep dive is the bridge between everything covered in this series and the kind of recognition you have already earned. What You Will Learn:The Readiness Myth: Why waiting until you feel fully ready keeps your leadership invisible, especially in environments that keep shifting the definition. The Communication Double Bind: Why women leaders are often judged more harshly than men for identical self-advocacy, and how to communicate in a way that lands as leadership. The S.P.E.A.K. Method: State, Position, Express, Anchor, and Keep the conversation going with a specific ask.Execution vs. Strategic Language: The single sentence formula that shifts how decision-makers perceive your work.Apologetic vs. Confident Expression: How to identify the hedging patterns that undercut your message before you make it.The Five Moments That Matter Most: Where to apply the S.P.E.A.K. Method first for the highest visibility return.Your Action Step:Identify one moment in the next seven days where you would normally stay quiet, undersell your work, or wait to be asked. Apply the first two steps of the S.P.E.A.K. Method to that moment:State: Name your specific contribution clearly. Use “I” when you mean “I,” and name the outcome, not the process.Position: Translate it into strategic language using this formula: “I did this so that the business could achieve that.”You are not trying to master the entire method in one week. You've decluttered. You've spent time organizing. You've tried to stay on top of the tidying. So why does your heart still race at the thought of someone coming over? Why does it still feel like you're not ready? This is something I experienced myself very recently, and it caught me completely off guard.Because here's the truth no one talks about.Decluttering your home doesn't automatically switch off the stress. It doesn't instantly undo years of pressure, overwhelm, and that feeling of being judged. And if you've ever felt that sudden panic when someone mentions visiting, even after all your effort…You are not alone. In this episode, I'm getting really honest about what's actually going on beneath the surface. Why your brain still reacts as if nothing has changed. And what actually helps you feel calm, in control, and ready enough.Because this isn't just about clutter. It's about overcoming overwhelm. It's about how your nervous system responds. And it's about creating a version of home organization that works for real life and real family dynamics. Not perfection. Not pressure.Just something that feels manageable and intentional.Inside this episode, I talk about:• Why organizing and tidying alone don't fix the emotional side of clutter• What “ready for guests” really means (and how to redefine it for yourself)• Simple declutter strategies that reduce stress instead of adding to it• The one phrase I used to stop myself spiralling into panic• How to move from reactive cleaning to calm, intentional home organizationHave you ever felt like your home needs days of work before anyone can walk through the door?Or like no matter how much you declutter, it's never quite enough? This episode will help you understand why.And more importantly, what to do instead.Because your home doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to support you.And once that shift happens, everything starts to feel different.Press play and let's talk about what actually helps.

Send us Fan MailConfidence feels like the missing ingredient when you want to lead with authority, coach clients well, or make clear decisions under pressure. But what if the reason you feel stuck is that you're chasing a feeling instead of building proof? We unpack the counterintuitive truth: confidence usually comes after you take action, not before, and the fastest path to more confidence is practice plus feedback, not more motivation. We also dig into a common trap in leadership and coaching: calling everything a mindset problem when the real issue is a skill gap. Mindset matters, but it cannot replace the ability to navigate hard conversations, ask clean questions, and guide someone without taking over. Along the way, we explore good failure versus bad failure, why fear of failure can make you fail by default, and how borrowed confidence from mentors can help you move before you fully believe in yourself. Then we separate confidence from self-confidence. Confidence is earned by doing something repeatedly. Self-confidence is your belief that you can figure it out even when you have never done it before. If you're a coach, leader, or creator who wants to stop performing inspiration and start being effective, you'll hear why a clear process and real-time feedback prevent you from “just asking random questions” and hoping it works. If this helps, subscribe and share the episode with a friend who's been waiting to feel ready, then leave a review with the one action you're going to take next. For a deeper dive, watch our video, "How to Lead High Stakes Conversations Without Winging It" on YouTube!Want to show up as the best version of you in the moments that matter most?Start by taking our 2-minute quiz at modernleadership.us/quiz!

For years I had the sequence backwards. I thought the path was believe in yourself, then act from that belief. So I tried everything to manufacture the belief: affirmations, journaling, hype playlists before big meetings. And it kept not holding. Not because positive thinking is worthless. But because feelings are not a stable foundation. They shift with every piece of feedback, every comparison, every moment where something doesn't go the way you hoped. The sequence that actually works is: act, build evidence, let the belief follow. You don't think your way to confidence. You do your way there. This is week three of our April series on Building Confidence, and it's the episode where the whole month clicks into place. We get into the competence-confidence loop: what it is, why it works, and the three places most people get stuck inside it. The perfection trap. The comparison spiral. The one-and-done fallacy.I also share something I don't talk about often: what it was like to start this podcast. The early episodes I still cringe at. The feedback that was uncomfortable but true. And what actually shifted by episode fifty, not because I believed harder, but because I had fifty episodes of evidence that I could do this. The confidence you're waiting to feel before you start? It's on the other side of starting. Not before. After. In this episode:Why affirmations don't work, and what to do insteadThe competence-confidence loop and how to get it runningThe three sticking points that stop the loop before it startsHow this connects to everything we built in weeks one and twoYour practice for this week: one rep, before you're readyThis is week three of four. I want to start with a question that has quietly shaped more of my decisions than I care to admit. How often have you held back, convincing yourself you are not quite ready? I know that pattern well. The waiting, the overthinking, the quiet erosion of momentum. What landed for me was uncomfortable. I was not waiting for readiness, I was protecting my ego. So I have reframed it. Life is no longer one big experiment where everything rides on getting it right. It is a series of small experiments where action, learning and humility build real credibility. We introverts do not need perfect conditions to begin. We need the courage to start before we feel ready. Because honestly, are we ever really ready

In this episode, I'm bringing you a replay from our recent SPARK sprint, where we focused on strengthening operational leadership inside growing aesthetic and wellness practices. During this conversation, I sat down with Melanie Crowley, Practice Manager at Renova Aesthetics, to talk through her journey from elementary education into managing a multi-million dollar business, without a traditional background in this industry. What unfolds is an honest and highly relatable look at what it means to step into leadership before you feel fully ready, and build confidence through action. Together, we unpack the evolving relationship between an owner and a practice manager, and what it really takes to create alignment as a business grows. From navigating team dynamics and implementing change, to learning how to hold accountability without losing trust, Melanie shares what it's looked like to develop her leadership in real time. Inside this replay, we also get into some of the realities that many practice managers and owners face but don't often say out loud… What happens when your team doesn't understand your role How to lead people who were there before you How to balance being supportive while still upholding standards And how consistent communication becomes the foundation for trust, performance, and culture If you're a practice manager learning how to lead, or an owner looking to strengthen your operational leadership and partnership, I think you'll find this conversation both validating and clarifying. Because what this conversation reinforces is simple… Leadership isn't something you wait to feel ready for. It's something you build, one conversation, one decision, and one level-up at a time.
