If you're waiting to feel confident, prepared, or fully equipped before you go after your goal — this episode is your wake-up call. In this raw and honest solo show, I'm sharing lessons from a recent experience hosting the very first gala for the Dagny Foundation — including what it taught me about discomfort, asking for help, scrappy problem-solving, and why we often stay stuck by thinking the same old thoughts. I'll walk you through the biggest mindset shifts that helped me get through something I didn't feel ready for — and how those same shifts apply directly to your goals. If you've ever felt unqualified, overwhelmed, or afraid to start, this is the conversation you need to hear. What You'll Learn in This Episode: ✅ Why waiting to feel ready keeps you stuck ✅ How discomfort can actually be a green light for growth ✅ Why asking for help is your power move, not your weakness ✅ Real examples of resourcefulness in action ✅ How to stop thinking inside the same limiting mental box ✅ Why what you're dreading is almost never as bad as it seems Listener Challenge: Ask for help this week — even if it feels awkward. Do one uncomfortable thing you've been avoiding. Brainstorm 3 “stupid” ideas — and act on one of them. In this episode, I share my thoughts on the concept of readiness and how it is a lie.   I challenge the notion that we must feel 100% ready before starting new ventures. Drawing from personal experiences, I emphasize that readiness often results from taking the leap, not a prerequisite. I encourage listeners to reflect on their own lives and consider times when they felt prepared entirely—chances are, those moments are few and far between. I also touch on the significance of identity work, urging listeners to envision the person they aspire to be and to act as if they are already that person. By shifting our mindset and embodying the qualities of our future selves, we can break free from the constraints of waiting for readiness. I provide practical steps for listeners to visualize their goals and take immediate action, regardless of their current feelings of preparedness. Episode Introduction:  Welcome to another powerful episode of Life Check Yourself! Today, we're diving deep into the art of boundary-setting, emotional resilience, and the power of reinvention with the incredible Jennifer Fable. After being diagnosed with over seven different mental health conditions by the age of 19, Jennifer embarked on a journey of radical healing that shaped her belief in one core truth: You are not broken. Now, she's on a mission to help others reclaim their voice, set healthy boundaries, and build relationships that empower instead of drain.  In this episode, we unpack the misconceptions about boundaries, how to communicate them without pushing people away, and why true transformation starts with our words. If you've ever struggled with setting limits, feeling heard, or navigating relationships without guilt, this conversation is for you!  Top 3 Takeaways:  ✅ Boundaries Should Be Bridges, Not Walls – Setting limits isn't about shutting people out; it's about creating healthy relationships built on clear communication and mutual respect.  ✅ Your Words Shape Your Reality – The language you use in setting boundaries and advocating for yourself determines whether you build connection or create conflict.  ✅ Confidence Comes From Action, Not Readiness – You don't need to feel 100% ready to set boundaries; you just need to start practicing them with self-trust.  Key Topics & Time Stamps:  The Power of Boundaries: How to Set Them Without Guilt (10:2  “We think boundaries are about other people, but they're really about knowing what we want and learning how to share it in a way that connects us instead of putting us on opposite teams.”  Boundaries are often misunderstood as rigid rules that separate people, but real boundaries are about creating clarity and connection. Rather than seeing them as conditions, they should function as a living, flexible framework that grows as we evolve. When setting a boundary, the focus should be on self-ownership—knowing what you need, expressing it clearly, and allowing space for a response without control or manipulation.  2. Using Words to Strengthen (Not Sabotage) Your Boundaries (23:4  “Instead of saying ‘You can't talk to me that way,' try ‘I would love to be spoken to in a more gentle tone.' This shifts the conversation from control to collaboration.”  Language is everything when it comes to setting boundaries effectively. Using empowering linguistic patterns prevents conversations from becoming adversarial. Avoiding words like “but” (which erases everything before it) and “try” (which presupposes failure) helps in creating agreements instead of ultimatums. Boundaries should invite negotiation, not opposition. Small changes in phrasing can dramatically shift how others receive and respond to our needs.  3. The Confidence Myth: Why You Don't Need to Feel Ready to Start (41:1  “Confidence isn't something you wait for—it's competence demonstrated over time. You don't need to feel ready to set boundaries; you just need to start practicing them.”  One of the biggest myths about boundary-setting is that you need to be confident first. The truth? Confidence is built through action. Many people avoid speaking up because they fear rejection, but boundaries are about honoring yourself, not controlling others.  The key is to embrace discomfort, take small steps, and trust that each conversation is a step toward greater self-respect and stronger relationships.  Connections:  Visit us: MarniBattista.Com  Ready To Create Your Corporate Escape Plan? Part 3: The Confidence Equation: Building Resilience and Owning Your WinsThis episode explores how to recognize your achievements, combat imposter syndrome, and step into opportunities with confidence. It's about resilience and learning to see yourself as a leader, even when doubt creeps in.Key TakeawaysImposter Syndrome Isn't Truth: Doubts often stem from self-imposed narratives, not reality. Recognizing this is the first step in overcoming them.Celebrate Every Win: Whether big or small, recognizing your achievements helps build confidence and momentum in your career.Zoom Out for Perspective: When doubt creeps in, take a moment to reflect on past accomplishments and remind yourself of the impact you've made. The Power of Community: Surrounding yourself with a supportive team and leaning into professional networks can be a game changer for growth and resilience. You're Not Alone: The challenges you face are shared by many in higher ed, and acknowledging this can be a powerful motivator to keep going.Episode SummaryHow Do You Step Up When You Don't Feel Ready? Erin shares her experience transitioning from a graduate assistant role to a full-time leadership position in higher ed during the uncertainty of the pandemic. Despite imposter syndrome, she embraced the challenge by asking questions, leveraging relationships, and trusting her ability to learn on the job. Shelby reflects on taking initiative early in her career, highlighting a guest sourcing project that became her first major leadership moment. Both emphasize that "ready" is a moving target, and growth often happens when you take a leap of faith. How Do You Handle Imposter Syndrome? Erin explains how imposter syndrome stems from internal narratives and emphasizes the importance of reframing these doubts. Celebrating every win, big or small, helps shift focus from what you lack to what you've accomplished. Shelby adds that unrealistic expectations often fuel self-doubt, and balancing ambition with self-compassion is critical. Both agree that silencing imposter syndrome requires acknowledging your progress and embracing your humanity. Why Is It Hard to Celebrate Wins in Higher Ed? The fast-paced nature of higher ed marketing often makes it difficult to pause and reflect on successes. Shelby shares her experience managing a live podcasting project during the AMA conference, highlighting how quickly her team shifted focus to upcoming projects without celebrating the milestone. Erin points out that the long lead times in higher ed campaigns often delay the gratification of seeing results. Both stress the importance of taking time to reflect on wins, especially in a team-oriented industry. How Do You Stay Grounded When Doubts Arise? Shelby shares her strategy of “zooming out,” taking time to reflect on her broader impact and revisiting personal tokens of encouragement like notes from students she's taught.
