Many people think of summer as the best time to read. On the beach, on the airplane to a vacation, in between semesters… Sounds like a perfect time to do a literature review. But there are many ways to do a literature review, and in all honesty, we think most people choose the wrong type of review – the “systematic” literature review where they select papers about a phenomenon, do a supposedly structured but not exhaustive search across IS journals, and then criticize the knowledge others have created. We discuss a few alternatives that we think hold more promise: qualitative and quantitative meta analyses, or narrative and integrative reviews. We also point to a few papers that have helped us organize the conversations we read about in the literature – which really, is what literature reviewing is all about. Peter Fleming is an internationally recognised researcher focusing on the future of work and the serious ethical implications it raises. He investigates the forces that shape the new economy, particularly its dysfunctions, and seeks to provide innovative theories to help us better understand the socio-economic consequences of work and employment. During Peter's tenure as Professor of Business and Society at City University of London, he chaired the London Living Wage Symposium at the House of Commons. He was awarded the Dean's Prize for Teaching and Learning Excellence at Cass Business School (now Bayes Business School). Peter has also been a guest speaker at the European Commission. Peter is the author of 11 books, including The Worst is Yet to Come (named book of the month by the Tate Modern, London), The Mythology of Work, Sugar Daddy Capitalism, The Death of Homo Economicus and Dark Academia. Gautam Ahuja is a Professor of Management and Organizations at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He has also served at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan from 2001 to 2017, and at The University of Texas at Austin (1996-2001), and as Visiting Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School (2014-2015). Ahuja's research interests include competitive analysis, technology and innovation, globalization, and the use of inter-organizational arrangements such as mergers, acquisitions, and alliances in these contexts. His research on these issues has received several global awards, including TIM Distinguished Scholar for lifetime achievement, the highest award given by the Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management (2019), Schendel Best Paper Award from the Strategic Management Society (2016), SMS Knowledge & Innovation Best Paper Award (2015),and the SIEE-EBS Best Paper Award for the best paper on innovation management (2013). He was also felicitated as an SMS Foundations Scholar (2016) for his contributions in the field of strategy and innovation by the Innovation and Knowledge group of the Strategic Management Society. At the invitation of the Indian Government, he delivered the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Oration (2011), the formal speech on the occasion of Pravasi Divas, the festival to celebrate the achievements of the Indian diaspora (non-resident Indians). Other honors include Lectio Magistralis, Luiss University, Rome; the Il Sigillum Magnum Medal from the University of Bologna in Italy, the world's oldest continuously functioning university; the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2008 from the Ross School; and the Senior Faculty Research Award for sustained “path-breaking research as a thought-leader in the field of strategy” in 2010, also from the Ross School. Other global research awards include the TIM Best Paper Award for Technology and Innovation Management (2003), the Sage-Pondy and West Publishing Awards for outstanding research in Organization Theory (1998), the Free Press Award for Best Dissertation in Strategic Management (1997), all from the Academy of Management; and the College on Organization Science Best Dissertation Award (1995) from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). Ahuja's research has been cited more than 23,000 times by other scholars and various federal and international bodies such as the EPA, OECD, and UNEP. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Organization Science, one of the premier journals in the field, and has also served as Associate Editor for Management Science and as a Senior Editor for Organization Science and Strategy Science. He served as the Co-chairperson (2001-04) and Chairperson (2004-2013) of the Strategy Area at Ross. For several years through this period, the Strategy Area was ranked in the top three departments (including number one) globally by the Financial Times. He has also served as the Division Chair for the Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management. Expedition Arbeitsraum, Teil 3 Heute im Gespräch: Julia Henke und Eva Zepp (Metaplan) Im dritten Teil der Mini Serie „Expedition Arbeitsraum“ trifft Redaktionsmitglied Julia auf Eva Zepp. Eva ist promovierte Kulturwissenschaftlerin und arbeitet als Beraterin bei der Beratungsfirma metaplan®. Ihre Dioktorarbeit hat sie zu partizipatorischen Beteiligungsverfahren in Schulplanungsprozessen geschrieben. Im März verfasste sie zusammen mit Wiebke Gronemeyer einen Artikel, in dem sie in Anlehnung an ihre Dissertationsschrift aus der Gestaltung von Schulhöfen Ableitungen für die Organisation von Arbeitsräumen aufzeigte. Denn: „ ...nirgendwo sonst erhält man so schonungsloses, taktloses Feedback der NutzerInnen!“ Dieser Artikel war die Inspiration für diese Podcast-Reihe und so sprechen Julia und Eva noch einmal über die Betrachtungsweise, dass der Raum, genau wie die Organisation, drei Seiten hat, die unterschiedliche Funktionen erfüllen und die es sich zu unterscheiden lohnt. Im Folgenden geht es aber vor allem darum, welche Art von Diskursen nötig sind, um mit so etwas wie der formalen Raumstruktur eine tatsächliche Wirkung auf die Kultur eines Unternehmens zu haben und inwieweit das überhaupt möglich ist. Dabei wird deutlich, dass hinter dem Buzzword „Partizipation“, das so gerne im Zusammenhang mit neuen Bürokonzepten fällt, sowohl die Gefahr von Zynismus als auch echte Chancen stecken. Frontline IB: Conversations With International Business Scholars
Eleanor Westney is Sloan Fellows Professor of Strategy and International Management Emerita at MIT Sloan School of Management, where she taught for twenty-five years. After completing a B.A. and an M.A. in Sociology and Japanese studies at the University of Toronto, she received a Ph.D. in Sociology in 1978 from Princeton University, and began her teaching career in the Department of Sociology at Yale University. In 1982 she joined the International Management group of the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management. From 2007 to 2014 she was the Scotiabank Professor of International Business and Professor of Organization Studies at the Schulich School of Business at York University in Toronto. His latest research book tells the story of an ambitious certification programme that aims to signal to customers and shareholders those small and large corporations that are responsible and caring with their workers, customers, with the planet and the local communities where they operate. Businesses have a big role to play in a capitalist society. They can tip the scales toward the benefit of the few, with toxic side effects for all, or they can guide us toward better, more equitable long-term solutions. In Better Business: How the B Corp Movement Is Remaking Capitalism (Yale UP, 2020), Marquis tells the story of the rise of a new corporate form—the B Corporation. Founded by a group of friends who met at Stanford, these companies undergo a rigorous certification process, overseen by the B Lab, and commit to putting social benefits, the rights of workers, community impact, and environmental stewardship on equal footing with financial shareholders. In our conversation Christopher mentioned the origin of the book and why he believes in the work done by B Lab. The book is divided into 11 chapter and is full of interesting practical examples. In the talk we also mentioned the notion of ‘benefit corporation', in the US and elsewhere. I have asked the author why we should trust the founders of the B Movement and their certification programme. He answered with some examples and convincing arguments. We then focused on chapter 1, ‘Interdependencies not Externalities', chapter 6, ‘Employees as the Heart of the Company', chapter 10, ‘Big Isn't Always Bad', and eventually chapter 11, ‘Convincing Consumers to Care'. We concluded with his plans for the next book. Informed by over a decade of research and animated by interviews with the movement's founders and leading figures, Marquis's book explores the rapid growth of companies choosing to certify as B Corps, both in the United States and internationally, and explains why the future of B Corporations is vital for us all. His book is a very original and timely contribution on the relationship between US presidents and their economic advisers. The book, 674 pages, is divided into nine sections (one for each president from Nixon to Trump) and 35 chapters (one for each economic adviser of those nine presidents). The book covers 50 years of US history, 1969 to 2019 and is enriched by amazing pictures of the advisers ‘in action’ with their presidents. What is it like to sit in the Oval Office and discuss policy with the president? To know that the decisions made will affect hundreds of millions of people? To know that the wrong advice could be calamitous? These 35 officials worked in the executive branch in a variety of capacities but all had direct access to the policymaking process and can offer insights about the difficult tradeoffs made on economic policy. I spoke with Dr. Amr Khafagy about his recent book The Economics of Financial Cooperatives (Routledge, 2019). Amr is Research Assistant at the Countryside and Community Research Institute of the University of Gloucestershire. Building on theories of finance and distribution, and the political economy of finance, this book explains the influence of financial cooperatives on wealth and income distribution, and institutional factors that determine the development of financial cooperatives. The book discusses the dynamics of income and wealth distribution with and without financial cooperatives, and defines the economic objective for financial cooperatives. Through explaining the influence of political institutions and regulations on the development of financial cooperatives, this book examines why financial cooperatives grew in some emerging economies and not in other similar ones. Amr's current main research interests include rural finance and agricultural productivity, financial markets and distribution, income inequality, and the political economy of the Middle East. His previously worked in microfinance in Egypt and India, where he was involved in designing and evaluating rural finance projects, and worked with a range of stakeholders, including farmers and rural households, government representatives/ministry officials, as well as central bank of Egypt and financial institutions. The book is a useful contribution to the study of a typology of firm that is more important in our markets than generally believed. We met with Prof. Ulrich Witt to discuss his recent book (co-edited with Andreas Chai), Understanding Economic Change, Advances in Evolutionary Economics (Cambridge University Press, 2018). This week we met Prof. Kurt Dopfer (Universität St Gallen, Switzerland) to talk about Modern Evolutionary Economics: An Overview (Cambridge University Press, 2018), a book he co-authored with eight other economists. Did capitalism exist in ancient Greece, the cradle of democracy and western civilization? I was joined to discuss this and other issues with Donni Wang, the author of Before the Market: The Political Economy of Olympianism (Common Ground, 2018). The book is not a traditional book of economics as history and philosophy play a big role. Not surprisingly Donni studied Economics, at Berkeley, and Classics, at Stanford. She now holds a position in History at Shanghai University. Previous studies have applied quantitative models and social science methods to determine the extent of market activities and growth in ancient Greece. Before the Market, instead, employs techniques from the cultural-linguistic turn to examine economic matters. With this approach the author argues to be able to shed light on a new economic system—one that is vastly different from the market system. At the same time, the underlying theoretical framework that links culture, identity, and action also prompts a radical redefinition of state power, democracy, and community, resulting in a narrative of ancient Greece that is both more dynamic and complex than in conventional accounts and also more useful and relevant for today's world. For the concerned reader, this book is laden with lessons and ideas for both envisioning wholesale economic transformation that is needed to address the problems of the 21st century as well as examples of specific practice that can be adopted. The authors argue that the existing narratives about how we should organize are built upon, and reinforce, a concept of “good management” derived from what is assumed to be a fundamental need to increase efficiency. But this assumption is based on a presentist, monocultural, and generally limited view of management's past. This book is for both scholars and practitioners, tutors and students. Academics will be able to reflect critically on the nature of business education and on conformism in teaching and research. In this interview, Carlo D'Ippoliti and Andrea Bernardi interview Franklin Obeng-Odoom who teaches urban economics and political economy in the School of Built Environment at the University of Technology, Sydney. In 2016, Dr Obeng-Odoom won the Patrick Welch Prize awarded by the Association for Social Economics. He also won the EAEPE-Kapp Prize 2017 for “Marketising the commons in Africa: the case of Ghana” Review of Social Economy 74 (4), 390-419. He has recently published Reconstructing Urban Economics: Towards a Political Economy of the Built Environment (Zed Books, 2016) The shift of world populations into cities and the increasing concentration of activities in urban areas have generated new debates about cities as well as rejuvenating old debates, turning them into global concerns. The economics of cities and regions has, therefore, attained a particularly important status in the twenty-first century. Yet many writers on urban economic issues have never formally studied the subject. Many are mainstream economists who apply their general (equilibrium) economics to cities, but most of them have very little appreciation of the political economy of cities and much less understanding of the built environment, its history, complexities, and peculiarities. The result is the rise of a highly mathematical, mystical urban economics abstracted from critical political, institutional, and social processes at a time when real-world urban economics is urgently needed. This book seeks to offer a corrective to this state of affairs, and to generate further interest in critical real-world urban economics. Through the analysis, exposition, and critique of the urban world in which we live, the book shows fundamental contradictions in the wisdom that more mainstream urban economists have offered over the years. It offers clear alternatives that show that another urban world is possible. Andrea Bernardi is Senior Lecturer in Employment and Organization Studies at Oxford Brookes University in the UK. He holds a doctorate in Organization Theory from the University of Milan, Bicocca. He has held teaching and research positions in Italy, China and the UK. Among his research interests are the use of history in management studies, the co-operative sector, and Chinese co-operatives.
