The Comanche peaked and then fell in the decades between 1840 and 1880. In this episode, we discuss that story arc. From the Comanche retaliation against Texas for the Council House Massacre, through a brief peace with the Texans, drought and declining bison herds, collapsing population, and finally to the back-and-forth relations with the US that culminated in the reservation period. In the middle of this story, Quanah Parker emerges as a great Comanche warrior who would then, in an unexpected pivot, urge assimilation as the last, best hope for his people. The Comanche entered the southern great plains slowly and imperceptibly, ultimately to find themselves one part of a very restless world. There were imperial tensions between European powers, as well as ancient rivalries and territorial ambitions of powerful native nations. It wasn't exactly a game of thrones, but it was a contest nonetheless. Listen in as Chris and Jason discuss the Comanche's war of annihilation against the Apache, their tumultuous relationship with the Spanish, shrewd alliances with other native nations, and the peace that was engineered in the twilight of Spanish power in North America. "They came to the plains from the west, slipping through the canyon passes of the Sangre de Cristo Range in small, roving bands...They were few in number, possessed little wealth...New Mexico's Spanish officials noted their arrival to the southern grasslands in 1706 and wrote it off as a minor event. Yet by midcentury, the Numunu, then bearing the name Comanches, had unhinged the world they had almost unnoticeably entered"So begins historian Pekka Hamalainen's epic history, The Comanche Empire. They were the continent's greatest horsemen and possibly the most ferocious warriors in history. In the first of several episodes on the Comanches, Chris and Jason trace their origins as hunter gatherers in vast North American wilderness, their migration south, and the fearsome but adaptable culture they forged on their path to dominance of the southern Great Plains. The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night for adults between 18 and 64 years old, yet more than one-third of adults aren't getting the recommended sleep and between 10% and 30% of adults struggle with insomnia. A host of studies and reports has linked insufficient sleep to depression, ADHD, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Back in 2014, the CDC labeled sleep deprivation a public health epidemic— with over 70 million adults suffering from a sleep disorder. On today's episode I interviewed sleep and rest expert, Amanda Slinger to explore the topic. Amanda has a medical background and over 20 years of experience working in educating organisations on the critical role that rest and sleep play in optimising individual and collective performance. Leading her team at SleepSpot, she has built a visionary, science-based Employee Recharge Programme, which is reshaping the landscape of workplace wellbeing by helping organisations nurture a healthy, engaged and happy workforce. Amanda is Founder and Director of three companies across mining, healthcare, and L&D, she has a Bachelor of Science (Nursing), a Graduate Diploma in OHS, a Graduate Certificate in Business Management, is a Certified Sleep Practitioner, a Lead Auditor, a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and is currently studying a Graduate Certificate in Business Psychology....Thanks for listening! Trusting your instincts and pushing forward in spite of people telling you that it can't be done often leads to incredible outcomes. Our gut instincts often guide us beyond the boundaries of what seems feasible on paper. Some of the most remarkable achievements have emerged when individuals chose to ignore the doubt & past statistics and push ahead with determination and resilience. Success often arises from a refusal to accept limitations and an unwavering belief in the possibility of achieving the seemingly impossible. At best, this means increased sick days and reduced productivity in companies. At worst, this means an increased risk of suicide, with the construction industry having a suicide rate 4.5 times higher than the general public. This is unacceptable. The construction industry and the trades experience uniquely challenging work conditions such as long hours, job uncertainty, and harsh working environments. This takes a toll on both the mental and physical health of employees, and often leads to unhealthy coping strategies, such as abusing alcohol and drugs to cope with stress. As men, it's often difficult to admit when we need to take a break, and even more difficult to admit when we need support. I've found that having candid conversations goes a long, long way, and I've seen first hand the change that comes from it on more occasions than I can count. It takes courage to admit that you're struggling, and it opens up a space for others to do the same. Research shows that companies who invest in effective mental health solutions receive $2.18 for every dollar spent. The balance between ambition and being present is a delicate dance that many individuals find themselves navigating in today's fast-paced world. Ambition drives us to set goals, achieve milestones, and reach for new heights, which is undoubtedly a valuable trait. However, the pursuit of ambition can sometimes lead to a state of perpetual striving, where the focus shifts to the future and the next achievement, leaving the present moment neglected.Being present, on the other hand, involves immersing oneself in the here and now, fully engaging with the current experience. It's about savoring life's small moments, cultivating mindfulness, and finding contentment in the present circumstances. The challenge arises when these two seemingly opposing forces intersect.Striking a balance between ambition and being present requires a mindful approach. It's about recognizing that while ambition propels us forward, the journey itself is equally valuable. Being present doesn't mean giving up on goals; rather, it involves infusing intention and awareness into each step taken towards those goals.Mindful ambition involves setting objectives, working diligently towards them, and yet maintaining an awareness of the present moment. It's finding joy in the process and celebrating progress along the way. This balance prevents burnout, nurtures mental well-being, and fosters a sense of fulfillment.Ultimately, embracing both ambition and presence allows for a more holistic and enriched life. By intertwining these two aspects, individuals can pursue their ambitions with vigor while also cultivating a deeper connection to the richness of life as it unfolds in each moment.Today's guest discusses strategies in finding such a balance. The relationship between financial wellbeing and mental health is a delicate balance that profoundly impacts our lives. Financial struggles can cast shadows of stress and anxiety, while stability can lift our mindset with a sense of security. This connection is not one-sided. Just as financial challenges can harm mental health, mental health issues can lead to financial missteps, creating a cycle. Roughly 46 percent of people with debt also have a mental health diagnosis - it is clear we need to do more. The key lies in embracing a holistic approach that nurtures both aspects. Seeking help for mental health is wise, just as consulting a financial advisor is for money management. True financial wellbeing involves living within your means, setting achievable goals, and understanding that happiness isn't solely tied to wealth. The intertwining of financial wellbeing and mental health is a crucial aspect of our lives. By tending to both, we can create a balance that resonates with our sense of purpose and builds resilience. It's about empowering yourself to navigate challenges while taking care of your wellbeing beyond monetary measures.Today's guests, Eleni Prontzos and Bryn Swayze are focused on helping bridge the gap between financial and mental health. They came into the financial industry wanting to make a meaningful, long-term impact in the lives of Clients and their loved ones. They are dedicated to educating clients while giving comprehensive, up to date financial advice to help you achieve your goals. Elsewhere Pete faces a difficult choice between two of his great loves, we witness the beginning of a family feud, and request your tales of footballers at weddings. This show is sponsored by bet365Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: show@thefootballramble.comFurther reading:A confused Thibaut Courtois on Antonio Conte and Eden Hazard:http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/chelsea-team-news-manchester-united-eden-hazard-thibaut-courtois-antonio-conte-a8232716.htmlSadio Mane on Jurgen Klopp:http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11269844/sadio-mane-says-jurgen-klopps-team-ethic-is-the-key-to-liverpools-successChris Brunt is unimpressed by Alan Pardew’s tactical prowess:http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11698/11269472/chris-brunt-critical-of-alan-pardews-tactics-in-west-broms-defeat-to-huddersfield See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Pep Guardiola gets his first trophy as Man City manager, inspires another dissection of Arsenal and is accused of harbouring a fugitive all at once, while Jose Mourinho emerges victorious in a rare on-pitch ding dong with Antonio Conte, and down at The Hawthorns Alan Pardew is as bemused as the rest of us.On top of all this there’s a warlock, an earful for Tony Pulis and though there may be bad blood in the correspondence section there’s also a trip to Kevin Keegan’s Soccer Circus and a humble gift from Sol Campbell.Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: show@thefootballramble.comFurther reading:Pep Guardiola is defiant about his yellow ribbon:https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/feb/25/pep-guardiola-carabao-cup-push-manchester-city-trebleIndependiente’s attempt at wizardry:https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/independiente-bring-along-a-sorcerer-help-them-win-recopa-sudamericanaSunderland vs Middlesbrough highlights:http://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/competitions/championship/11266018/sunderland-3-3-middlesbrough See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The FA Cup has delivered again, as just when it looked like Man City might win everything, up stepped Wigan, and then for some reason Peter Reid. Composing ourselves after this development we look ahead to the Carabao Cup Final, look back at Pete’s red carpet adventures and reflect on Nobby Solano’s choice of holiday destination. Meanwhile, on the same show, Patrice Evra Patrice Evras, Mesut Ozil gets the sniffles and we take a brief moment to remember to worry about England. This week brings wonderful drama from the FA Cup courtesy of Rochdale and their manager Keith Hill, a man who in a way is all of our dads, Carlos Carvalhal distracts from a goalless draw with some welcome Police Academy chat and in The Championship Mimin’ Mick McCarthy is gloriously tetchy after the Old Farm Derby. As well as all this precious gold there’s the novel concept of tackling above the head, some retro Portsmouth organisational slapstick and some sausage-based fun north of the border. After a time getting acquainted with Claude Puel’s radiator Riyad Mahrez is ready for FA Cup action, as are Spurs as they head to Rochdale’s obstacle course of a pitch, and Man United hope to cause an upset by finding a way past Huddersfield. There are special days for Neymar and Kevin Keegan, an expose on the devious Going for Glold tactics of our dear host and a lot of painful, disruptive head turning. This show features that rarest of beasts; a happy Pete Donaldson, giddy from a Newcastle win and a mutant chicken binge. Not only that, we have the North London Derby, chaos between Stoke and Brighton and more importantly, a penis being seen. If that isn’t enough there’s also time for revelations about football’s bald illuminati, Tim Sherwood’s surprising sideline and our interest being piqued by the concept of a solution to the “not quite a yellow, not quite a red” problem. The North London Derby looms and will be particularly interesting as diving has now officially been declared fine, Ederson eases Man City’s injury crisis by reinventing himself as a midfielder and David Moyes gets a cheerleader in the form of fun-time Patrice Evra. We also shine a light on the maudlin nature of Antonio Conte’s current work, discover that fruit may work as an injury treatment and peak behind the curtain to meet playground bully Marcus Speller. This show is sponsored by bet365Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: show@thefootballramble.comFurther reading:Pochettino on diving:https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/feb/06/mauricio-pochettino-dele-alli-dive-tottenham-trickeryEderson the midfielder:https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/ederson-i-could-play-midfield-man-city-and-i-can-score-free-kicks-tooRiyad Mahrez’s Leicester troubles:http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11712/11239423/riyad-mahrez8217s-leicester-city-legacy-sad-if-this-story-is-tarnished See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
As another transfer window slams dramatically and confusingly shut we do our best to assess who has done well and what Arsenal were actually planning, Dele Alli shows all the signs of following in the footsteps of many an England great at the World Cup and those resurgent swans of Swansea start to fly up the table. Within our usual ‘professionality’ there’s also talk of club therapists leaking information to the press, confusion at the gates of Wembley and a delightful airport tantrum.
