DaVinci Science Center brings science to life at new location in Allentown

The DaVinci Science Center is a national award-winning nonprofit organization that has brought science to life to science since 1992. It was established by a faculty member at Lehigh University. It was initially formed in a former Bethlehem steel plant building with hands-on experience. Now the location is downtown Allentown. For visitors, it showcases the relationship between art and science. “A lot of our scientists have pretty extensive art pursuits, whether it's in their free time or, as you know, a second position or a former job. And I think that's because there's a kind of natural intersection between the two disciplines. The biggest thing for me is whenever you're trying to solve a science problem, you have to be able to think creative, “said Lin Erickson, CEO of the DaVinci Science Center. The Science Center offers hands on experiences for everyone of all ages. It also offers an opportunity for students to get out of their classrooms to experience hands-on exhibits like curiosity hall. It was inspired by Leonardo DaVinci. “You know, Walter Isaacson's book talks about Leonardo and his genius and says that that's why he was such a genius more than the other people whose written about Einstein jobs and so forth. He was such a genius and curious. He never finished anything. So, a lot of his artwork, you might know he never finished, but that sets him apart. But in Curiosity Hall, there's three programs, and you're introduced to Leonardo, the artist, Leonardo the scientist and Leonardo the inventor. So, you're at a kiosk and you're looking up at a huge screen. And so, like Leonardo the artist, you have the opportunity to create your own portrait, “said Erickson. Carol Luthar is the Sr. Manager of STEAM Education at the science center. She hopes that visitors walk away with a new appreciation of science. “So, I personally really and I think our whole our whole team really believes that science is for everyone. Science is a great way to help people and help the community. When you think about recent things that we as a society have had to deal with. So, for example, the Covid 19 pandemic science really helped us through that. And it's not a process that's done, you know, individually without creativity, without innovation, without community input. It really requires being kind of like a well-rounded individual. And I think what I hope people get when they come to the science Center is they learn that science is interactive, it's community based, and it's something that is really important. And it's not just having to sit at their desk, read a book about electricity, You know, that's not what while that can be interesting, it's not how real scientists work. So I'm hoping that students get a little broaden their idea of what science is and how it can help us, “said Luthar.  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, join me on a journey where the classroom canopy reaches the sky, and every leaf turns the page to a new lesson and experience. On this week's Adventures in Learning Podcast, we meet some of the creative minds behind North Carolina's successful Schools in Parks program. Join Randy Bechtel and Mary Meyer of North Carolina State Parks, and Sarah Yelton and Taylor Prichard from UNC Institute for the Environment, as we uncover the magic that happens when third through fifth graders swap their desks for dirt and textbooks for the textures of the great outdoors. Our guests bring to life strategies for building STEAM experiences — think water quality testing or wildlife tracking — that complement the curriculum while also fostering connections between children and the world around them. Afraid of bringing the kids outside? Not sure where to begin? This episode is a treasure trove of strategies for transforming STEAM education into unforgettable outdoor experiences. Starting small can ignite a wildfire of curiosity — even a ten-minute jaunt outside the classroom can open new possibilities. Public education is a universal part of the American experience. Every one of us interacts with our system of education whether directly or through taxation. Since the nation's founding, a commitment to universal education has been a pillar of our society. More recently, however, public education has come under attack from several places. Some of the criticism is fair. But some of the sharpest attacks have been coordinated by far right extremists determined to break the system and replace it with private enterprises, faith-based curriculums or even...nothing. As I think of the power of the conceptual lesson cycle, I naturally connect to the Design Thinking Process, which looks at conceptual ideas from the big picture.  If you haven't heard about it, no worries, I didn't until a year ago.  For those who have been engaging with design thinking for some time, we are going to explore some possibilities that will strengthen your usage of it.  I'm as giddy as an early years child on their first time bringing in a show and tell artifact.  For those rubbing their hands together thinking this series is about design, I'm sad to tell you it's not the case.  We will not be going through the process to create prototypes in the traditional sense.  For those ideas, consider listening to Design Cast: A Podcast about Design and Steam Education by Jason Reagin.  He's super talented and passionate about all things Design and STEAM.  He has a lot of guests that are just as nerdy as he is about design and I always walk about with new perspectives. We are taking a journey on the Design Thinking Process.  It's the same process of design, but applying it towards organizational structures.  What does that mean?  Well, it means we are going to look at Design Thinking from the lens of education and how it impacts lasting change within our school system.  I know it's quite deep, but we need this type of thinking as we emerge into a new educational landscape post pandemic.  Now is the time to make lasting changes, rather than sliding back into how it's always been.  We are not the same educators that we were two years ago, so why should we teach the same way? Why should our learners be forced to learn in the old model?Tim Brown Ted Talk:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAinLaT42xYFor a written blog post and other resources, visit:   https://thinkchat2020.weebly.com

If we're not going straight to the underserved schools—not going directly to the kids born and growing up with less than others—so that they can see, feel, and touch technology for themselves, how can we expect them to understand how technology works? How would they know a career in technology/cybersecurity even exists? How can they have a sense of confidence they can pursue that career? Chances are, they can't—and therefore, won't.But this is something that former NFL player, Oren O'Neal, has taken on as a problem that should and can be solved. Through his non-profit, Oren is reaching the students who often get left behind, and he is doing it in a way that doesn't make them "escape" from their neighborhood. Instead, Oren shows students that they can succeed in their environment, making their own community better for themselves and everyone who lives and will grow up in them. This one is an inspirational story that you don't want to miss.
