Military sexual trauma can affect every part of a survivor's life. It may influence personal relationships, professional confidence, faith, emotional stability, and the ability to trust other people. Survivors may wrestle with shame, anger, anxiety, depression, nightmares, or the belief that they should have somehow prevented what happened. For Pastor Jeff, the assault combined with other experiences from his life and military service, eventually creating problems that could no longer be ignored. He had been hurt, but he refused to allow the person who assaulted him to control the rest of his life. His journey would take him “from trauma to triumph, from broken to builder, and from abused to affirming others.” The PTSD Diagnosis PTSD can develop after a person experiences or witnesses a terrifying, violent, or deeply distressing event. Although the condition is frequently associated with combat veterans, it can also result from sexual assault, domestic violence, serious accidents, childhood abuse, violent crime, or other traumatic experiences. The symptoms can affect both the mind and body. A person may experience intrusive memories, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, anger, avoidance, or an overwhelming sense of danger. That does not mean denying that someone was victimized. He was sexually assaulted, and the responsibility belongs to the person who committed the assault. Recognizing the truth is essential. The transformation occurs when the survivor decides that victimization will not become a permanent identity. Pastor Jeff helps people recognize their pain without surrendering their future to it. His approach encourages survivors to reclaim their voice, purpose, dignity, and ability to choose what happens next. His message is not that recovery is easy. It is that recovery is possible. He challenges people to look beyond what was done to them and ask what they can build from the life that remains. That transition, from victim to victor, is not a single event. It may involve counseling, prayer, medical care, spiritual guidance, supportive relationships, difficult conversations, and daily decisions. Progress may be uneven, but every step can move a survivor closer to freedom. Pastor Jeff's work also focuses heavily on grief. “Grief isolates us, but gratitude reconnects us,” he says. Grief can make people feel separated from the rest of the world. Friends and family may not understand the depth of the loss. Some people avoid conversations because they do not know what to say. Others offer quick solutions to pain that cannot be quickly repaired. Grief does not only follow a death. People may grieve the loss of safety, trust, health, identity, career, marriage, friendship, faith, or the life they believed they would have. A survivor of sexual assault may grieve the person they were before the assault. A veteran may grieve the end of military service or the loss of the trust once placed in a leader. The government's rhetoric and actions targeting migrants continue to take an extreme turn. We speak to Kate Garbers, a founder and director of Unseen, a charity that provides safety, hope and choice to survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery. She has several years working in the anti-slavery sector, directly with survivors, law enforcement agencies, non-governmental organisations and governments on how to effectively tackle the issue of trafficking and modern slavery. She is also a Senior Research Fellow in Policy Evidence and Survivor Support, with the Rights Lab, at the University of Nottingham. Kate speaks about Modern Slavery, what it means, what the reality is and why the Home Secretary has simply got it wrong when it comes to trafficking survivors.

Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Ani DiFranco. ABOUT ANI DIFRANCOSinger, songwriter, musician, producer, poet, author, spoken-word artist, activist and entrepreneur Ani DiFranco has released more than 20 independent studio albums on her own label, Righteous Babe Records. Though often classified as “alternative folk,” DiFranco's musical influences span a range of genres. After relentless touring, she reached a wide commercial audience in the late 1990s and early 2000s with albums such as Little Plastic Castle, Up Up Up Up Up Up, Revelling/Reckoning, Evolve, Educated Guess, and the gold-certified live album Living in Clip. The Grammy winner and nine-time nominee achieved her sole Top 40 hit as a songwriter when Alana Davis covered the DiFranco classic “32 Flavors” in 1997. The prolific and critically-acclaimed performer developed her own uniquely percussive guitar style and has collaborated with a range of artists, including Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, Bruce Cockburn, Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips, Maceo Parker, and Prince. In addition to releasing her own music, her label has issued recordings by Sara Lee, Andrew Bird, Nona Hendryx, and others. Ani was one of the first musicians to receive the Woman of Courage Award from the National Organization for Women, and was honored with both the Woody Guthrie Award and the Southern Center For Human Rights' Human Rights Award. Her memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, was released in 2019 by Viking Books. At the time we spoke with her, the New Orleans-based DiFranco's 2021 album, Revolutionary Love, was just about to be released.

Same evening. Another vision. We have all seen the city limit signs on the side of the road as we drive down the highway. They indicate the boundaries of the city, telling us where the city begins and where it ends. These signs represent defined borders that distinguish a city from other areas around it. Imagine a city with no boundaries, no borders, and no limits. The city is what the prophet Zechariah sees in his third vision of the evening, which is meant to provide great hope and comfort to God's remnant who are in a very discouraging situation.

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n' heavy and the 90s alternative n' grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners!What's this InObscuria thing? Bosq & Kaleta - “No Walls" from the 2023 compilation album By the People, For the People on House of Afandi Records Long-time collaborators Bosq & Kaleta team up again for an Afrobeat-inspired disco funk groove.  Born Benjamin Woods in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Bosq is now based in Colombia where he has dominated dance floors with his blends of Afro-Latin music with Disco, Funk, Reggae, House, and Hip Hop. Singer/songwriter/producer/musician Leon “Kaleta” Ligan-Majekodunmi was born in Porto Novo, Benin, and was active in the Lagos, Nigeria music scene in the '70s.  On today's Song of the Day, they convey the message, "TEAR DOWN THE WALLS." As Bosq writes on Instagram, "In Gaza & the West Bank but also all over the world. The vocals in the beginning are spoken in Zulu, a South African language. The South African people also long suffered under a racist apartheid regime that was supported until the very end by Israel and the US. Ani DiFranco began recording and self-releasing her music as a 20 year old in Buffalo, New York in 1990. 34 years later she is widely considered to be a feminist icon. But in many ways she emerged iconic, fully formed and fearless.  A facile lyricist with a biting honesty, she played guitar with a virtuosic, rhythmic style. And she was ahead of her time as an independent artist who owned all her own masters and controlled most of the major aspects of her career. She's sometimes called the mother of the DIY movement. DiFranco has released all of her albums (over twenty) on her Righteous Babe record label.  The label has also put out projects for other distinguished singer songwriters including Andrew Bird, Utah Phillips, Arto Lindsay, and Anaïs Mitchell whose own Hadestown project was first released as an album on Righteous Babe before being transformed into the Broadway hit that it is today. Ani Difranco's most recent studio album Revolutionary Love came out in 2021. In 2022 she published a picture book for children called The Knowing which she described as “an Ani DiFranco-style lullaby, inviting young readers to ponder the distinction between outer forms of identity and the inner light of consciousness.” And she will join the cast of Hadestown on Broadway in February, playing the role of Persephone, a part she sang on Anais Mitchell's original Righteous Babe recording in 2010. So it's both her broadway debut and a fill circle moment.  In recent years Righteous Babe has released anniversary editions of Ani's early recordings. In 2022 she revisited the 1998 album Little Plastic Castle, sharing anecdotes and memories of the making of it on social media, and playing some of the songs live. Her memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, was published in 2019. Readings for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Isaiah 56:1, 6-7; Matthew 15:21-28This weekend's Gospel is such an interesting one. We hear and see Jesus presented in a unique manner not otherwise seen in the Gospel. Jesus shows resistance to the outsider. Was this a test? Was it a cultural blind spot? I don't have that answer. But what we do know and what comes through clearly in both readings is that there is no "us and them". No "in and out'. Any walls we create in our own lives must be taken down.
