Debates about Ethnic Studies in K-12 and Higher Education have highlighted the importance of culturally inclusive pedagogy in schools. Despite discussions about Ethnic Studies, there is a more extended history of Mexican-origin people pushing for culturally responsive education. In Reading, Writing, and Revolution: Escuelitas and the Emergence of a Mexican American Identity in Texas (University of Texas Press, 2020), historian Philis M. Barragán-Goetz argues that through cultural negotiation, escuelitas (community schools) shaped Mexican American identity and civil rights activism in the late 19th and early 20th century. Barragán Goetz weaves in oral histories, government documents, newspapers, and archival sources to demonstrate the power in grassroots organizing for educational justice in Texas. She debunks a popular myth that Mexican Americans have not cared for education throughout history. Barragán Goetz writes that the progressive education movement in the late 19th century was not all that progressive if we examine the lived experienced of Mexican-origin people. Activists such as Idar Family, Villegas de Magnon, Maria Villarreal, Maria Renteria, and many involved in the two main Mexican American civil rights organizations of the time provided a foundation for Latina/os to be part of the fight for educational inclusion in the 20th century. Reading, Writing, and Revolution is not merely a book about educational history; it is a trailblazing study on how Mexican Americans have relied on any tools available to create a more inclusive educational system for themselves and their community. In this episode of The P.A.S. Report Podcast, Professor Nicholas Giordano sits down with Professor Jeffrey Lax to examine the collapse of America's assimilation process, the rise of anti-Americanism, and the cultural battles playing out on our college campuses. From the decline of the melting pot ideal to the silencing effect of self-censorship, the conversation highlights how immigration, political correctness, and campus protests are reshaping American identity and threatening the nation's core values of freedom and free speech. Episode Highlights Why the melting pot concept has eroded and assimilation is no longer encouraged. How anti-American sentiment and campus culture undermine national unity. The growing fear of self-censorship among students and faculty in higher education.
In this episode of Identified, Nabil Ayers talks with Youngmi Mayer—comedian, author, and host of the acclaimed Feeling Asian podcast—about growing up biracial in South Korea, the long shadow of generational trauma, and the unresolvable contradictions that shape our identities. Youngmi, who was born in Korea to a Korean mother and white American father, opens up about the deep stigma around mixed-race children in Korean society—stories that include institutional rejection and even state violence in recent history. She shares how being “slightly different” in appearance made her feel completely othered, despite speaking Korean fluently and being raised in Korean culture. The conversation travels through her complex ancestry—including the discovery of Jewish lineage through a 23andMe test that rewrote part of her family history—and the paradox of being descended from both Jewish people and German Nazis. Mayer speaks candidly about intergenerational trauma, including a family legacy shaped by war, loss, and silence, and how these inherited narratives continue to affect how she views success, emotion, and even motherhood. As a single mother co-parenting her son with her ex-husband, Youngmi reflects on building a version of family that defies tradition. She’s blunt, funny, and brilliant as she challenges romanticized notions of family, while still admitting to the deep, inescapable bonds that tether her to her roots. This episode is a powerful meditation on biracial identity, cultural belonging, and what it means to both honor and critique the families that raised us. We explore the deteriorating foundation of American society through the lens of Christian principles and examine how our relationships with God and our spouses reflect our national character.• Christianity forms the foundation of American society, as reflected in historical quotes from Daniel Webster and Joseph Story• The breakdown of marriage (50% divorce rate inside and outside the church) mirrors broader societal deterioration• Christ's commandments to love God and love our neighbors (especially our spouses) should guide our daily priorities• Scripture readings from Galatians 1:1-24, Psalm 58, and Proverbs 23:12 emphasize divine guidance and justice• Recognition of Medal of Honor recipient Henrik Behnke demonstrates the difference between immigrants who serve versus those being served• Without Christian principles as our foundation, our institutions—marriages, schools, churches, military, courts—begin to crumbleGod bless you all. God bless your families, your marriages. God bless America. God bless your nation, wherever you are around the world. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.splitzoneduo.comThe American Athletic Conference was by far the best non-power conference of the early College Football Playoff era. Its best teams were nationally relevant. Many programs were on the rise, and so were the league's coaches, who went on to Power Five jobs and then got replaced by coaches who often did the same.Lately, things have not gone as well. The American lost its best teams to the Big 12, and the programs that backfilled those spots have yet to show anything. The hiring train of AAC coaches has slowed down, and the conference has moved backward while several non-power programs outside the league have ascended. The best program in the league, Memphis, is trying hard to get out.The league literally renamed itself last week, going away from “AAC” and opting to just be called “the American.” As the league literally redefines itself, Godfrey joins Alex and Richard for a discussion of how the American got here and where it might be going over the next few years.Producer: Anthony Vito

A native of Troy, New York, Danielle discovered one day that her putative French and Irish maternal great grandmother Lola Perot had spent all her married life passing for white in New York. In fact, Lola was born Creole (colored) in Louisiana. In a fascinating roundtable, we explore where does Romero land in our country's obsession with racial identity? What does it mean when a European American discovers the story of one's family was a racial lie? Is it possible that Romero's origin story can bring us closer to connection in our universal humanity? Is the true impact of Danielle's story not her ancestor who passed for white, but that Danielle's mixed ancestry is a lens into our racial future as Americans? In a sense, Danielle is the tip of a spear. More and more Americans will discover they are of multiple ancestry groups over time. Come join us for an hour with a national leader in the hunt for identity sans race. In this special July 4th edition of The P.A.S. Report's America's Founding Series, Professor Nick Giordano breaks down the Declaration of Independence like never before, line by line, to reveal the enduring truths that gave birth to a nation. This episode explores the Committee of Five, the surprising influence of Italian patriot Filippo Mazzei, and how the Declaration laid the philosophical foundation for American liberty, natural rights, and self-government. Far more than a historical document, the Declaration is a moral proclamation that still defines the American Creed. A civic identity rooted in unalienable rights, the consent of the governed, and the duty to resist tyranny. Professor Giordano also highlights the founders' sacrifice and the extraordinary risk they took when they signed what amounted to their own death warrant. If you've ever wondered what it really means to be American, or why these words still matter, this is the episode you can't afford to miss. Episode Highlights: Why the Declaration of Independence was “forged with thought but won by blood,” and what it reveals about the American identity The real meaning behind “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” and how these truths remain our moral foundation How the final line of the Declaration, “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor,” marked a point of no return for the Founders
Let me tell you something that absolutely floored me. Iheard a woman say that when she sees an American flag, she gets uncomfortable. That it feels evil. Evil—while she's living in the country that gives her the right to say that out loud, in public, with zero fear of imprisonment or retribution. That's not oppression. That's indifference masked as activism. And I just don't understand it.

We're throwing back to a conversation we had in 2020 with Jason Rezaian, Iranian American journalist who had been previously jailed in Iran. Back in January of 2020, the first Trump administration carried out a military operation killing Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian military commander. Now, the second Trump administration is striking Iranian nuclear sites. While lots has changed since 2020, much of our conversation with Jason is still eerily relevant.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
