Suppose you were a newcomer to English literature, and having heard of this artistic device called ‘poetry', wondered what it was all about and where it came from.  You might start by looking up some examples of poetry from each century, going back until you can't easily understand the English anymore, and find in the 16th century such poems as John Skelton's “Speke, Parott” [sic]: My name is Parrot, a byrd of Paradyse, By Nature devised of a wonderowus kynde, Deyntely dyeted with dyvers dylycate spyce, Tyl Euphrates, that flode, dryveth me into Inde; Where men of that countrey by fortune me fynde, And send me to greate ladyes of estate; Then Parot must have an almon or a date.

TIMESTAMPS (9:39) - The Skelton Brothers The marriage of Tanya and John Skelton was falling apart in 2010.  The couple shared three sons, Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton who  were aged 9, 7 and 5.  John had left town with the children on multiple occasions that year, causing Tanya to file for divorce and obtain full custody of the boys. By Thanksgiving 2010, the couple were amicable enough that Tanya agreed to let John have the boys for the holiday, on the condition that he would return them to her on Friday.  When John had not returned the boys by the afternoon, Tanya began to panic.  She tracked John down at a hospital where he had been admitted following a failed suicide attempt.  The boys were nowhere to be found. November 2023 marked 13 years since the boys vanished.  John has refused to give any information about their whereabouts and has always maintained he did not hurt his children.  He said at one point they would ‘hibernate until they graduate.'  All of the boys would now be aged over 18 and none of them have been seen since Thanksgiving Day 2010. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the disappearance of the Skelton Brothers from Morenci, Michigan.  John is currently in prison on kidnapping charges and his prison term expires Nov. 29, 2025. In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

We're back in the Garage Studies classroom to discuss the poetic masterpiece, "Just Like Me"! The first version by The Wilde Knights (1:25) gets us talking about iambic dimeter, and the poetry of John Skelton & Robert Frost. As one does. More importantly, the song has a mmmarvelous, Mike Mitchell-esque guitar solo. In late 1965, Paul Revere & The Raiders made the song a hit (44:28).  They slow the song down, cut the bridge, and replace the strange, clipped enunciation of the original with the breathy, growly, sexually "desparate" vocals of Mark Lindsay. It also features a famously freaky double-tracked solo by Drake Levin. Fast forward to 1967, and The Poverty Five kept the spirit of '65 alive (1:31:31). This one is wiiiiild - the shrillest garage screams ever, and tambourine that'll give you tetanus!! Finally, in 1981, Pat Benatar and her band took the song on, but they didn't exactly hit it with their best shot (1:53:13). If you love the original, you better run from this version, because it's a heartbreaker. Now leave us alone to cry!!

Tanya and John Skelton were in the midst of a bitter divorce as Thanksgiving neared in 2010. Tanya had sole custody of their sons, ages 5, 7, and 9, but let the boys visit her estranged husband for the holiday. It was the last time she ever saw them. Maybe someone listening knows what happened. Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton spent Thanksgiving in 2010 with their father John in Morenci, Michigan. When Tanya went to John's house the next day to pick up her sons, he wasn't there. John was in the hospital saying he had broken his ankle during a suicide attempt. He told multiple stories about where Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner were. When police accessed his house, the inside had been torn apart. This story isn't easy to tell. These boys were let down by someone who should have been taking care of them. Proverbs 6:16-19 says, “There are six things the Lord hates. In fact, he hates seven things. The Lord hates proud eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that kill those who aren't guilty. He also hates hearts that make evil plans and feet that are quick to do evil. He hates any witness who pours out lies and anyone who stirs up conflict in the community.” We've got all of that in this episode. I hope this episode reaches someone who knows something about what happened to Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton. In today's episode, we brought in an expert to show us how  we can be the best version of ourselves by thriving in our body, mind, and spirit. SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE When I choose a podcast topic, I can usually get a handle on my angle with some research, listening & general contemplation. This week I'm gonna come right out and say I need some help. There are certain artists whose output is so dense & prolific that to try to summarize it in one podcast is overwhelming. Dylan comes to mind. Zappa. Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson. Apparently Buckethead holds the record for most albums with 166?!?! With Eminem, it's not about raw numbers. It's about density. Few artists of any kind pack as much into their lyrics as he does. Whether you're into his content or not, anyone paying attention who has any knowledge of wordsmithing has to agree that he is one of the masters. Story & character. Flow, dexterity & clarity. All that, yes. But what blows me away over & over is the wordplay. Internal rhymes. Alliteration. Assonance & consonance. Multisyllabic rhyming! I'm using these words purposely to bring home the point that Eminem is one of the greatest poets of all time. A study was done in 2015 that found Eminem has the largest vocabulary of any music artist ever, beating second place Jay Z by more than 2,000 words. Side note: the top four richest music vocabularies are all hip hop artists, followed immediately by Bob Dylan. I don't find this surprising at all. And how he uses those words is repeatedly stunning. Take this lyric as one of hundreds of examples: My pen & paper cause a chain reaction to get your brain relaxin', the zany actin' maniac in action. A brainiac in fact son, you mainly lack attraction. You look insanely wack when just a fraction of my tracks run. I count NINE multisyllabic near rhymes, in the midst of several coherent ideas making one unifying point. I'd make parallels to the lyrics of Sondheim or Lin-Manuel Miranda for sheer dexterity & ingenuity. If we're talking legit poets, I've seen comparisons to the bigs like Shakespeare, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and many others including the obscure but apt John Skelton. What about beat poets & their raw emotion? Free verse poets and their flow? Certainly slam poetry, which has some connection to hip hop, especially freestyling. Point is, there are way too many elements in Eminem's lyrics to dismiss it as anything other than poetry. My discussion on the “controversy” in his lyrics? Eminem demands that you go beneath the surface by hitting you in the face over & over. Surface dwellers only hear the “bad language” or disturbing stories, and completely miss the context & often deft characterizations. Has he overstepped? Yes, mostly when dissing other celebrities or music. But overall he is an illustrator of the grotesque – calling it out for the twisted horror that it is. One of my favorite aspects of his work is the humor. I recently had a talk with someone who said any artist who can incorporate humor into their music is fully evolved. Eminem – like Prince, Beatles or Bob Dylan – showed it's possible to be self-serious AND self-deprecating, meaningful AND ridiculous. And it's a mark of a listener's evolution if they can identify the humor and know how to take a joke. From the moment I heard Eminem, I copped some of his lyrical technique – sounds & rhymes turning on themselves, twisting, repeating with variation. As a former poet, it was an easy adaptation. I LOVE multisyllabic rhyming & throw it in whenever it feels organic. Even aspects of his delivery & humor filtered through me. “Stop It!”, “Never Tell”, “Different People”, AND this one: REC – “Sing Owwt” (from Syncopy for the Weird) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/musicisnotagenre/support

I’m taking you time-traveling again! Just a short train or boat ride from the heart of London is one of England’s most famous pleasure palaces: Hampton Court Palace. From the heyday of Henry VIII to Shakespeare’s performances in the Great Hall, and from plans for the King James Bible to huge renovations under William and Mary—Hampton Court Palace has been at the heart of the British monarchy. In fact, during the Hanoverian reigns, it was the site of a queen fleeing while in active labor and the accusation of a baby smuggled into the palace in a warming pan! Since Queen Victoria opened Hampton Court to the public, people have flocked to see the palace, the gardens, the maze, and the wonders of a world gone by.Thomas Wolsey was the first owner of Hampton Court. Wolsey’s extravagance certainly caught the eye of his visitors, and of his king. John Skelton, a well-known poet and former tutor of Henry VIII, wrote a satirical poem calling Wolsey’s wealth and influence into sharp focus:Why come you not to Court? To which court? To the king’s court?Or to Hampton Court?Nay, to the king’s court! The king’s courtShould have the excellenceBut Hampton CourtHath the pre-eminence! In my opinion, this was the worst thing for someone like Henry VIII to hear. It was one thing for him to have Wolsey basically run the country while the king pursued his own interests and pleasures. It was quite another for people to joke about Wolsey having pre-eminence. That, combined with Wolsey’s inability to get Henry’s annulment from Katherine of Aragon, plus the whispers that Wolsey was conspiring with the Pope, turned Henry against his long-time devoted servant. Wolsey maintained the whole point of Hampton Court was to glorify his King. The best apartments were for Henry VIII. Henry had always acted as if the place were his own when he visited. But as Wolsey proved unable to meet the king’s wishes, he found Henry wanted to take his sense of ownership further. In September 1528, Wolsey received a letter telling him to leave Hampton Court. The king was about to turn Hampton Court into his own pleasure palace. Walk with Henry VIII, his wives, and his children through the Great Hall, the Great Watching Chamber, the royal apartments, the kitchens, the maze, and more! You can meet history at Hampton Court!

On the day after Thanksgiving in 2010, Tanya Zuvers reported her three young sons missing from her home in Morenci, Michigan. Her husband was supposed to bring the boys back to her on Friday morning, but he never did. The couple had been living apart and planned to divorce. Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, just 5-years old, had spent Thanksgiving Day with their father, John Skelton. When Tanya tried to get them back the next morning, John told her that they were with a friend of his. John turned up at a hospital following an apparent suicide attempt. In the years since, family and authorities have searched for the Skelton boys without success. John Skelton has refused to disclose their whereabouts. As time passes, the chances that the boys will be found alive continue to dwindle.Today at the quiet end, we’re discussing the details of the Skelton case and the possibilities of what happened to these three young boys. In Stolen Lives: The Skelton Brothers, we will go over the family history and the timeline of events in an effort to better understand what happened and if anything can be done to bring these boys home.

You dream of writing the great American novel, but to make ends meet, you spend your days writing boring corporate reports. There's a difference between writing for love and writing for a living—or is there? And does a heyday have anything to do with hay? Did getting dressed to kill originally refer to soldiers? Plus, toad-in-the-hole, deadwoods, due diligence, kibosh, clues, and an election-year word puzzle.FULL DETAILSBeing a writer and making a living as a writer are often two different things. Maybe you're writing poetry at night but by day you're writing technical manuals or web copy. Journalist Michael Erard, whose day job is writing for think tank, describes such a writer as "a dancer who walks for a living." How do you make the transition between the two? How do you inspire yourself all over again to write what you love? What do you call it when you're about to jump into a conversation but someone beats you to it? Mary, a caller and self-described introvert from Indianapolis, calls it getting seagulled, inspired by an episode of The Simpsons in which nerdy Lisa works up the courage to participate in a conversation, but is interrupted at the last second by a screeching seagull. In her new book, The Introvert's Way, author Sophia Dembling refers to this experience as getting steamrolled. A different kind of interruption is getting porlocked, a reference to the visitor from Porlock who interrupted Samuel Taylor Coleridge's reverie while he was writing the poem Kubla Khan and made him lose his train of thought. Have a better term for these unfortunate experiences?Leah from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, wants to know the origin of the name of the Delmarva Peninsula. It's a portmanteau name, made of parts of the names of the three states represented there: Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury University is a great source for more information. Do you keep copypasta on your computer? It's that bit of tasty text you keep ready to paste in any relevant email or Facebook post. Grant has a great one for language lovers, based on eggcorns, those words or phrases that get switched to things that sound the same. Mustard up all the strength you can, it's a doggy dog world out there! Our Puzzle Master John Chaneski has a game inspired by the recent election season. From each clue, determine the word that begins with either D-E-M or R-E-P. For example, what's the term for a part of a song that's performed all over again? Try the quiz, and if you think of any others, email us!Naomi, a Missoula, Montana, mom who's writing a magazine essay, wants to know if due diligence is the appropriate term to denote the daily, household chores that her son's new stepdad has taken on. The verdict: it's a legal term. If you're writing about personal experiences, stick with a phrase from a lower register of speech, like daily duties. We think the term due diligence is among those being misused and overused. If you're in a state of confusion, you might say I don't know if I'm Arthur or Martha. It's a slang phrase for "I'm confused" that you might hear in Australia or New Zealand, according to the Collins Dictionary. If you're dressed to kill, you're looking sharp. But does the expression have to do with medieval chivalry, or military armor of any kind? Nope. The earliest cases pop up in text in the 1800s, based on the trend of adding the words to kill onto verbs to mean something's done with force and passion and energy. If you've got crummy handwriting, you might say that it looks like something written with a thumbnail dipped in tar. But go ahead, dip that thumbnail and write to us anyway. If you've got notable handwriting of any sort, we want to see it!When you put the kibosh, or kybosh, on something, you're putting a speedy end to it. This term, usually pronounced KYE-bosh, first shows up in print when Charles Dickens used in in 1836, writing under the pseudonym Boz. In that piece, it was spoken by a cockney fellow.Martha shares a favorite poem, "The Bagel," by David Ignatow. Who wouldn't like to feel "strangely happy with myself"? This and other gems can be found in Billy Collins' book Poetry 180. For you writers toiling away at your day job, heed the advice of Zadie Smith: "Resign yourself to the lifelong sadness that comes from never being satisfied." Wait, what? There has to be some satisfaction in this! Write to us about the simple pleasure that you find in the craft.Five guys walk into a diner. One orders a toad in the hole, another the gashouse eggs, the third gets eggs in a basket, the next orders a hole in one, and the last fellow gets spit in the ocean. What does each wind up with? The same thing! Although toad in the hole can refer to a sausage-in-Yorkshire pudding dish, it's also among the many names for a good old-fashioned slice of bread with a hole in it, fried with an egg in that hole, including one-eyed jack and pirate's eye. When something's in its heyday, its in its prime. What does that have to do with hay? Nothing, actually. It goes back to the 1500s, when heyday and similar-sounding words were simply expressions of celebration or joy. Grant is especially fond of the Oxford English Dictionary's first citation for this term, from the John Skelton's Magnyfycence, published around 1529: Rutty bully Ioly rutterkin heyda.Editors are great for picking up those double the's and similar mistakes, known as eye-skip errors.Do you refer to complimentary tickets to an event as Annie Oakleys? Or deadwoods, perhaps? The term Annie Oakley supposedly comes from a punched ticket's resemblance to bullet-riddled cards from the sharpshooter's Wild West shows. Deadwood is associated with the old barroom situation where you'd buy a paper drink ticket from one person and give it to the bartender. If you were in good favor with him, he might hand it back to you—that is, the piece of paper, or the dead piece of wood.In one of history's greatest stories about yarn, Theseus famously made it back out of the deadly Minotaur's labyrinth by unspooling a ball of yarn so he could retrace his steps. In Middle English, such rolled-up yarn was called a clewe. Eventually, clew took on the metaphorical meaning of something that will lead you to a solution. Pretty soon, the spelling was changed to clue, and now we've got that awesome board game and of course, that blue pooch and his bits of evidence. This episode was hosted by Grant Barrett and Martha Barnette, and produced by Stefanie Levine.....Support for A Way with Words comes from The Ken Blanchard Companies, celebrating 35 years of making a leadership difference with Situational Leadership II, the leadership model designed to boost effectiveness, impact, and employee engagement.
