Oh, hey there! No - you're not imagining it. I did disappear from your stream for quite a stretch without any notice or explanation. More on that to come soon, I promise. For now, I'm thrilled to be dropping a new episode filled with ahas from the brilliant Lia Seth. Enjoy and I'll see you back here with another new episode in two short weeks! - Your host, Jill Felska----------Would you be nervous if an employee came to you with a disability accommodation request? Many People Ops professionals and managers would say yes - and it makes sense! Discussions about workplace inclusion are widespread when related to groups like people of color and women, but not as common around how to be inclusive or provide accommodations to those with disabilities. It's also unfamiliar legal territory for most, which makes a lot of folks nervous. The good news is that you don't need to be a compliance expert in order to support someone with a disability. You (mostly) just need empathy. This is just one of many takeaways from this episode's conversation with Lia Seth, HR Operations leader and self-proclaimed accessibility queen. In today's episode, I share the three priorities I believe every people ops leader should have when it comes to tracking employee data.  You'll learn: Three data priorities every people ops leader should be focusing on.  Why not sharing feedback results with your team is actually more harmful than helpful. The true source of employee survey fatigue. Hint: it's not the number of surveys you send. A change management best practice that will substantially improve your chances of transforming beliefs and behaviors successfully and sustainably.  MENTIONED RESOURCES/LINKS https://www.wanttoworkthere.com/single-post/the-simple-but-extremely-effective-method-i-use-to-collect-inclusive-qualitative-data-from-employee (The Simple by Extremely Effective Method I Use to Collect Inclusive Qualitative Data from Employees, Episode 6) https://www.wanttoworkthere.com/single-post/enps-the-simple-data-point-every-organization-should-be-tracking (eNPS: How to Implement the One-Question Survey Every Company Should Be Utilizing, Episode 8) LET'S CONNECT Check out the website: https://www.wanttoworkthere.com (wanttoworkthere.com) More Resources: https://www.wanttoworkthere.com/resources (wanttoworkthere.com/resources) Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wanttoworkthere/ (@wanttoworkthere)  DID YOU LOVE THE EPISODE? It has been a tough couple weeks for many since the overturning of Roe V Wade. In times like these, empathy is more important than ever. But what role does empathy really have in workplace culture? There is no one better to help answer this question than Nōn Wels, founder of the Feely Human Collective and host of the You, Me, Empathy podcast. Luckily, he was happy to sit down with me and explore this very question, along with many more. At one point, our conversation gave me literal full body goosebumps, so you know it's going to be an incredible one! In this episode we'll explore: Nōn's simple, but profound definition of empathy. What role empathy plays in the workplace. Whether or not empathy is something you can teach vs being an innate skill. How managers can signal to their teams that it's safe to bring their whole self to work - regardless of an organization's overall cultural norms. The power of emotional check-ins and how you can facilitate them within your organization. And the wisdom Nōn shared that gave me actual full body goosebumps. Trust me - it's something we all need to hear. MENTIONED RESOURCES/LINKS https://www.damemagazine.com/2022/05/18/professionalism-is-a-racist-construct/ (Professionalism Is a Racist Construct). When you live in a part of the country that gets four distinct seasons, there is nothing like the first 80 degree day of summer each year. For me, it kicks off three months where work becomes a little harder to focus on...and I'm guessing I'm not the only person with this seasonal affliction!  I will never forget learning that a friend's company had a perk called Summer Fridays which meant everyone worked four-day weeks from June through August. I've been an advocate ever since, which has included finding different variations of the perk that can work for different organizations. Group think, introversion, and a lack of psychological safety all impede our ability to hear the real thoughts and options of team members during a brainstorm, feedback, or focus group session. While the severity of these issues always vary by group, they inevitably impact great data from surfacing in nearly every discussion. In an effort to ensure all voices were being equally represented, I got creative when building out an internal focus group process a few years back - and the results blew me away. Ever since, I've used that same method for all of my client engagements and it's never let me down. In today's episode, I'll be sharing everything you need to know to build the method into your own internal processes, so you can experience similar results. You'll learn: The simple hack I always use when leading brainstorming, feedback, or focus group sessions that allows me to capture insights from ALL team members. Why this method is PERFECT for remote or hybrid teams, but can also be utilized during in-person group conversations. That was where I found myself leading up to this interview, before realizing that this is a problem I frequently see with clients who are trying to figure out what to focus on and where to start when building a better workplace culture. So today, I'll be sharing the seven data sources you should consider when undertaking an Employee Feedback Audit! In this episode you'll learn: The real reason for employee survey fatigue. Welcome back! In today's episode, I reflect on five core lessons I've learned over 10 years of being a remote manager. By sharing, I can hopefully spare you (and your team) from having to experience the same!  In this episode you'll learn: The one assumption you should never make when managing remotely.  How the “butts in seats” mentality carried over to remote working and what you must do to eliminate the problem. The one step you MUST always take before having a difficult conversation with a team member remotely. Why consistency is king when it comes to employee 1:1s. Company culture is a phrase and concept that's truly become part of our collective lexicon in the last 20 years. That said, many people still have a really hard time quantifying what it actually is. Employers will say things like, “we're a great place to work because we have weekly happy hours, a ping pong table in the break room, and great health insurance.” Unfortunately, these are examples of perks not culture - and at the end of the day culture is what really matters.  My name is Jill Felska and for the last 12 years, I've been on a mission to help organizations understand what really makes a company a great place to work - a place that makes people say, “I want to work there!” While I absolutely love the work I do with individual companies, my ultimate passion is to equip more people with the language and tools they need to create positive workplace change. My new podcast - Want To Work There - is for those of us who believe a better world of work IS possible, but aren't exactly sure just how to get there! Together we'll get curious about the fundamentals that make up non-toxic work environments and you'll leave each episode with some actionable next steps for bringing this change to your own workplace. Some of the topics I'm most excited to cover include why you must prioritize stay interviews, how to operationalize company values, the power of team charters, and why a culture committee's job shouldn't be party planning. If you're fired up about creating a better world of work, I hope you'll tune in and become part of a community of culture catalysts hoping to achieve just that!
