Leslie Hassler, the dynamic president of Your Biz Rules, joins us to unravel the complex journey of finding true freedom in entrepreneurship. Many start their businesses dreaming of autonomy, only to find themselves trapped in a self-made cage. Leslie shares invaluable strategies on how intentional daily decisions and mindset shifts can lead entrepreneurs to genuine liberation. Together, we challenge the societal obsession with hustle culture and highlight the importance of a clear vision, supported by quality coaching, to ensure business ownership remains a path to freedom. As businesses scale, entrepreneurs often face identity shifts and evolving workplace cultures. Leslie sheds light on the changing landscape of work, where opportunities like becoming an Amazon reseller demand innovation beyond the traditional 80-hour workweek. We explore personal stories of entrepreneurs grappling with these transitions, navigating guilt, and redefining their value in a growing enterprise. Leslie emphasizes that embracing change and aligning personal identity with business growth is crucial for maintaining momentum and satisfaction. Navigating the financial landscape of a business is equally critical for achieving freedom. Leslie discusses the significance of strategic financial planning, viewing taxes as a marker of success, and the necessity of cash reserves for stability. We explore the unpredictability of business growth and how data-driven forecasting can anchor businesses in stable revenue streams. A strong company culture and clear employee value proposition emerge as key elements for retaining talent and ensuring organizational resilience. Leslie's insights remind us of the transformative potential when vision and action harmonize, encouraging every business owner to pursue greater impact, no matter the stage of their journey. Prioritizing Employee Culture in Business Prioritizing employee culture is crucial for businesses to succeed. Leaders who actively show their employees they matter create an environment that fosters engagement, trust, and loyalty. Simply paying employees or giving them bonuses is not enough; they need to feel valued and appreciated beyond their work performance. Imagine a company where employees are excited to come to work and feel a sense of purpose in what they do. This is the kind of culture that sets businesses apart and leads to success. Investing in employee culture is investing in the future of the business. On this episode, I am joined by Joey Coleman, a bestselling author, and speaker who has worked with leading organizations worldwide, including Volkswagen, Zappos, and Whirlpool. Joey is passionate about creating remarkable customer experiences and believes that prioritizing employee culture is the key to achieving this. Whether you're a business owner, manager, or employee, this conversation is a must-listen for anyone looking to create a workplace culture that fosters engagement, trust, and loyalty. Key Takeaways: Consider prioritizing employee culture to improve customer experience The success of a leader hinges on the outcomes they create for their people The success of a company can be heavily influenced by how much they value their employees Care about employees' personal lives as much as their work lives Leaders need to listen to and respond to their employees' needs Leaders should create an environment that values and appreciates employees to lead to more engaged employees Show employees that they matter through actions and systems, not just words All this and more, on this week's episode of Beyond 7 Figures. Stay tuned next week when I talk with Karen Eber. She's a Keynote and TED speaker. So, don't forget to subscribe to the show to get that episode as soon it gets released. Until then, be profitable. While culture is a needed focus, today it has become the hottest buzz word that can mean almost anything. What is most useful these days as we rightly focus on culture is a lens through which to view it that brings clarity and helps guide us to take action in ways that serve our staff and ultimately the business. Way back in the KTTS archives we had an interview with Stan Slap, author of one of my most recommended books, “Under the Hood : Fire up and Fine-tune your Employee Culture” This book and Stan's perspectives are critical to understanding where we stand and how to work together to achieve great things. Stan is the founder and CEO of SLAP company and has spent the last 3 decades specializing in achieving fierce support from manager, employee and customer cultures. They believe within each of these groups there is one problem that has the biggest impact on the enterprise and one solution that is most valuable, coveted and elusive. The SLAP company has cracked the code on these problems and their solutions are highest rated in many of the world's highest rated companies. They are currently working in 44 countries countries and ahave achieved amazing results in employee culture at companies like Oracle, CNN, Timewarner, Google, Starbucks, eBay, Viacom, and Microsoft among many others. In this episode you will learn about: 4 of the "7 Deadly Sins of Cultural Engagement" How culture is formed and what it cares about Best practices for engaging and guiding a culture How do we fail our employees? Secrets to scaling culture How to create “cultural legends” Why you cannot coax a culture into giving you what you want Tactics for true communication How do customers factor into your employee culture? In this episode, Dan connects with marketing strategist, researcher, author, and sought-after brand therapist Evelyn J. Starr, whose strategic insights have been instrumental in the revitalization of household names including Dunkin' Donuts, Hasbro, Gilette, Veryfine, and more. Through decades of research and work helping brands in stagnation, she saw a pattern: brands in distress share characteristics that look a lot like rebellious, sullen, angry, confused, overconfident, misguided teens. In other words, brands go through adolescence, and it can take some serious therapy, nurturing, and guidance to help them reach successful adulthood. She lays it all out in her recent book, Teenage Wastebrand: How Your Brand Can Stop Struggling and Start Scaling, and in their discussion, she and Dan discuss some of the highlights, including the eight symptoms of brand adolescence, how to diagnose brand issues, the importance of solid values, and much more. Listen in and learn how to: Investigate the value of carving out a unique niche for a standout brand image. Recognize the potential hazards of ego-driven business practices and how to avoid them. Examine the relationship between well-defined values and a supportive company culture. Design a brand strategy anchored in purpose and value-driven principles. Excel in maintaining an authentic and dependable brand presence through effective messaging and actions. Here's what you can expect from the show: Corporations and brands are just like people which is why they all have life cycles. How companies can correctly identify and diagnose their brand issues if they've stalled. Understanding attitudes and behaviors and how they impact buyers. Fear and misunderstanding of marketing and how it can limit business leaders and brand growth. Marketing is a risky investment because the ROI can often be ambiguous, but it's a risk worth taking. Business owners must learn how to parent their brands through the various stages of life. How to identify the eight symptoms of brand adolescence. Starr Associates Evelyn Starr | LinkedIn Teenage Wastebrand: How Your Brand Can Stop Struggling and Start Scaling Timestamped summary of this episode (Generated by Capsho): 00:00:00 - Introduction, Dan Nestle introduces the podcast and talks about the importance of understanding the life cycle of brands. Dan shares his concerns as a parent and how it relates to building a successful brand. He introduces his guest, Evelyn Starr, a marketing leader and brand therapist, and author of the book "Teenage Waste Brand." 00:01:20 - Evelyn Starr's Background, Evelyn Starr talks about her background and how she started her career in market research. She worked for companies like Very Fine Products, Dunkin Donuts, and Hasbro. She shares how she started working with small and medium-sized companies to help them with their marketing. 00:08:45 - The Life Cycle of Brands, Dan Nestle asks Evelyn Starr how she got interested in helping brands in their teenage years. Evelyn shares that many business owners don't understand marketing and are fearful of investing in it. She explains how she helps them understand marketing in non-marketing terms. She talks about the different phases in the life cycle of brands and how they can face issues during their turbulent adolescence. 00:17:41 - Identifying Brand Issues, Evelyn Starr talks about how to identify brand issues and how to diagnose them. She talks about the importance of understanding the customer and their needs. She shares examples of how she has helped companies identify their brand issues and how they have overcome them. 00:25:18 - Branding in the Digital Age, Dan Nestle asks Evelyn Starr about branding in the digital age. Evelyn 00:15:00 - Identity Crisis, The first symptom of brand adolescence is an identity crisis. Like in human adolescence, the brand must determine who they want to be and how they want to be perceived. A brand purpose that transcends a particular product and brand attributes that resonate with customers must be determined. 00:23:35 - Symptom Not Stages, Evelyn Starr emphasizes that the symptoms are not sequential, but rather different characteristics of adolescent brands. Each brand may experience some or all eight symptoms at different times. 00:25:23 - Purpose and Attributes, The brand's purpose and attributes are key in resolving the identity crisis symptom. The brand must have a purpose that is transcendent and attributes that resonate with customers. Research and feedback from customers can help define these. 00:28:45 - Therapeutic Process, Similar to a therapeutic process, the brand must go through analyses of the why and what to solve the identity crisis. Exercises like stickies and whiteboards can help in brand discovery, purpose discovery, and attribute discovery. Evelyn Starr provides a step-by-step guide in her book. 00:29:55 - Dealing with Complexity, The conversation begins with Dan asking Evelyn how brands deal with complexity, specifically in a house of brands where there are multiple product brands under a corporate brand. Evelyn explains that each brand needs to know who they are before they can contribute, and the parent company needs to have a unifying purpose for putting the brands together. 00:35:30 - Finding a Niche, The topic of finding a niche comes up in relation to solving the symptom of "suffering from FOMO" or fear of missing out. Evelyn explains that in order for a brand to grow, it needs to be focused and known for something, at least in the beginning. Choosing a niche allows a brand to gain expertise and credibility, and finding a new niche can help a brand expand and grow. 00:39:17 - Fear and Innovation, Fear is a common obstacle for business owners who are afraid of leaving money on the table or missing out on opportunities. Evelyn discusses the importance of leaving fear behind and being open to new directions and innovations. She shares the example of Amazon, who started by focusing on one product (books) before expanding to other products. 00:41:49 - Box Three Solution, Dan shares his experience with directed innovation and the Box Three Solution, which involves finding new audiences, changes to the product, business model, or value chain. Evelyn notes that finding new niches can combat various symptoms of adolescence, including the need to assert independence, make new friends, or overcome fear of missing out. 00:46:06 - Finding Your Niche, Evelyn advises against copying someone else's business model and suggests drilling down further to find an untapped idea. She emphasizes the importance of doing research and discovering new things that align with your brand. 00:48:41 - Self-Centeredness, Evelyn discusses the risk of building a brand solely for profits and not serving the audience. She explains how this behavior can lead to mistrust, loss of productivity, and wasted resources. The solution is to revisit company values that align with serving the customer and the employees. 00:51:20 - The Importance of Company Values, Evelyn explains how values guide behavior and behaviors create culture. She emphasizes the importance of codifying values from the beginning and recruiting people who share those values. A strong company culture leads to a strong brand. 00:54:05 - Trust and Culture, Evelyn explains the connection between trust, culture, and brand. Self-centered behavior can damage a brand's reputation, making it hard to regain trust. A clear set of values that align with serving the customer and the employees can prevent this. 01:01:36 - The Employee Culture, Evelyn discusses how the employee culture is a vital part of the brand. She stresses that the employer brand and the customer-facing brand are all one and the same and that treating employees well is just as important as treating customers well. A strong employee culture leads to a strong brand. 01:02:22 - The Importance of Employee Experience, Businesses should prioritize the well-being of their employees as much as their customers and consumers. The kind of internal culture a company has affects its overall external brand reputation. 01:04:07 - Transparency in Branding, Social media has made it easier for people to share their opinions about a company's internal culture, making transparency in branding more important than ever. It's crucial for marketers and business leaders to recognize that employees are a core stakeholder and audience that must be treated with the utmost care. 01:06:08 - The Impact of Teenage Wastebrand, Evelyn Starr's book, 'Teenage Wastebrand,' highlights the signs of a company that is stuck in a state of adolescence, including a lack of purpose, values, and identity. These brands struggle to stand out in a crowded market and often do not resonate with their intended audience. 01:08:00 - Evolving Your Brand, Evelyn Starr's brand is evolving as she incorporates developmental editing of business books into her work as a consumer insights expert and brand therapist. She helps business owners make confident marketing decisions and aligns her purpose with theirs. 01:14:50 - Why You Should Read 'Teenage Wastebrand,' 'Teenage Wastebrand' is an easily accessible, relatable, and practical guidebook that helps businesses identify their purpose, values, and niche. The book also emphasizes the importance of employee well-being and how transparency in branding is necessary

I'll be honest. I've been struggling to get back into the swing of things post-holidays. I'd like to say that I've been nothing but gentle with myself about this…but that would be a lie. Which is why my conversation with Ashleigh Martinez about work sabbaticals came at exactly the right moment. Ashleigh is the Manager of Employee Culture and Community Development at Creative Circle. As a show of appreciation for her ten year anniversary at Creative Circle, she was able to take a three-month sabbatical that taught her so much about herself and her relationship with work. Our conversation was just what I needed to rethink my own relationship with work and ways that I can navigate it more honestly in 2023. I think it will have the same effect for you!In this episode you'll learn:What a sabbatical actually is and how it works at Creative Circle. The fears Ashleigh had to overcome to actually take a sabbatical. The MOST important aspect of successfully unplugging from work during a break. The sabbatical lessons Ashleigh learned and still applies now. What surprised her the most when she came back from sabbatical. Did you know that there are over 130 000 hotels in the USA? I consider myself fortunate that three of the four hotels I worked with at Library Hotel Collection were rated among the top 25 hotels in the USA on the Best of the Best, Tripadvisor's Travelers Choice Awards, and the fourth one was followed very closely behind. The people whose hotels rank among the top guest-reviewed hotels in the country are all part of a very fortunate group of hoteliers who have discovered and implemented the secrets to what it takes to make guests happy. The guests are so happy they can't help themselves from writing 5-star reviews for the kind people who treated them like VIPs. The secret these General Managers have is a process, a daily discipline, and a philosophical commitment to continuously improve the guest experience. This episode is an edited revisit to a conversation with one of the top General Managers in the United States, the serial award-winning Carlo Carroccia of Charlestowne Hotels. Carlo is the Dual General Manager of both the French Quarter Inn and the Spectator hotel in Charleston, and time and time again, those two hotels keep showing up among the top 25 Hotels in the US on Tripadvisor. He's not trying to be the #1 Hotel in the country on Tripadvisor. Instead, he is focused on creating a culture where every day, every employee is on a mission to make every guest experience a happy one. Please enjoy this episode and learn from a master! The process works. It works for Carlo, it worked for me, and they will work for anyone who wants to learn how to make guest happiness a growth strategy for their hospitality or service business. If you would like to learn how to implement these principles at your hotels or portfolio, please get in touch with Adele at getgreatreviews@adelegutman.com or subscribe at adelegutman.com

Join us as we dig deeper into how to build a positive employee culture. We discuss two important variables to get attention on social media: spontaneous and unpredictable. The more spontaneous or unpredictable an employee event can be, then the more it is likely to be organically shared by themselves on social media. This method has become the most effective means of getting employee referrals. "Word of mouth" no longer has the reach it once did. We also discuss the reward of taking the risk of putting ourselves out there as leaders. Those who assume some level of risk often discover large rewards.
Join us in our second episode in a series devoted to staffing. In this episode, we discuss highlights from the book "The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (And Their Employees)" by Patrick Lencioni. The book describes three elements that make work miserable -- irrelevance, immeasurability, and anonymity. We break down these elements and discuss how they apply in our post-acute industry. Our discussion should help generate some ideas you can use in your operation.
Join us as we start our episode series devoted to staffing. When it comes to employee culture, magic only happens once a team fully supports its leader's vision. Our vision statements' strength depends on the strength of our individual "Why." Discovering your "Why" enables you to create a vision for your operation that your employees will be excited about striving for. Staff recruitment will remain an uphill battle if our current employees aren't excited about what they do and who they do it with.

Apple has had a lot going on lately: we did a whole episode about the controversial child protection photo scanning features, which have now been delayed. A law in South Korea might force the company to change how App Store payments work; the company settled a Japanese case about the App Store recently, as well as a class-action lawsuit in this country. The verdict in the Epic trial will arrive and there are renewed questions about Apple's relationship with the Chinese government. And, of course, it's September — the month when new iPhones usually come out. But in the background, Verge senior reporter Zoë Schiffer has spent the past few months publishing story after story about unhappy Apple employees, who are starting to talk to the press more and more about what working at Apple is like, and how they'd like it to change. Nilay Patel talks to Zoë about the work she's been doing and what the future holds. As applied behavior science has become more widespread, a need has emerged for guidance on how to build and integrate behavioral science functions within an organization. To help fill this need, our very own Zarak Khan – along with psychology professor turned applied behavioral scientist Laurel Newman – edited a book that was published in March that draws on the collective wisdom of applied behavioral scientists with cross-industry experience. Download a free copy of “Building Behavioral Science in an Organization” at http://www.action-design.org/buildingbehavioralscienceorgs. Or you can purchase a Kindle or paperback copy on Amazon, at cost. In today’s episode, Laurel Newman joins Erik and Zarak to discuss the applications of behavioral science to HR. While there’s usually an organizational focus on leadership, Laurel makes the case for more focus on role clarity and role fit. She says that there’s often an opportunity to focus more on putting employees in positions where they feel like there’s a great match between what they’re good at and what the role means for them. Research shows that companies with more intrinsically motivated employees also have happier customers; so employee satisfaction and wellbeing directly benefit a company’s bottom line. Laurel recommends that HR departments – and organizations in general – ask more questions such as: When we teach people information, how do we make it relevant and useful enough for them to have the necessary impact and result in the desired behavior change? How can we avoid silos, and be more honest about investigating and identifying problems? Are we focusing on behavior (dependent variable), or just assuming that the independent variable (such as training) will have the desired impact?

In our wide-ranging interview, we talk about his journey, his vision, his company, his culture, and also his message to young people who have been affected by COVID-19. Enjoy!
