Collectively, the global student protests demanding university divestments from Israel are one of the largest mass protests in recent history. Student protesters are risking their futures as they demand their institutions financially divest from Israel and companies connected to supplying weapons and technology to Israel's government.Last week, in Calgary, police descended on the University of Calgary campus with riot gear, using shields, batons and rubber bullets, to forcibly remove a group of protesters from an encampment set up on campus. On today's podcast, Vinita speaks with Pratim Sengupta, professor of learning sciences at the University of Calgary. Sengupta was there the night police engulfed the protesters and says the violence he saw shook him to his core. Also on the podcast is Sarita Srivastava, a university leader of a much smaller arts and design campus in downtown Toronto. Srivastava (sister to Vinita) is a sociologist by background and author of the recent book, "Are You Calling Me a Racist?" Together, they look back on what's been happening on campuses amid this mass protest but also plot out a new - gentler - way forward than the one we've been witnessing.

In S5 E4 I am delighted to welcome Dr Anna Baverstock to the podcast, Anna is a consultant in community child health looking after children with complex neurodisability and their families. She has been an educational supervisor and Associate DME for support and wellbeing. She was invited to be a member of the NHS Staff and Learners' Mental Wellbeing Commission in 2019 (Mental Wellbeing Report | Health Education England (hee.nhs.uk)). Currently she is lead for senior doctor wellbeing and leadership within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Anna is a trained coach, mediator and Schwartz round facilitator. Her philosophy is how do we ensure the first patient of the shift and the last get the same kind, safe care? We must look after ourselves and our teams during our working day. A big part of this is how we connect to self and others especially when under pressure. Can we form brave spaces to enable honest conversation that enable growth and change? When not talking she loves to run, do yoga, read, draw and doodle often inspired by quotes or poems that resonate. In this wonderful conversation we discuss Anna's wellbeing leadership, mediation and coaching work. Key themes discussed here include : Deep listening - to understand and connect, not reply or control.Brave conversations- how can we lean into the challenging conversations including where there is conflict or we need to give or receive difficult feedback. As Anna tells it "Difficult conversations don't get easier, but we get braver" with practice.Connection- in her work to empower and support core work-unit leaders in healthcare and build kind, inclusive cultures where high challenge comes with high support, psychological safety is the means and the goal is connection and creating space for deep listening. Thank you Anna, this conversation is a masterclass in wellness centred leadership.Links/References:Dr Anna Baverstock on X ( see pinned BMJ wellbeing at work article series and her daily doodle!)https://twitter.com/anna_annabavAnna on the Being Better, Together Podcast : https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/being-better-together/id1603984431?i=1000650871466Anna's suggested reading list related to the topics in this conversation:· Brené Brown – Atlas of the heart· Listen to Anna's podcast about the book :https://bedsidereading.buzzsprout.com/1880290/11049191…· Kim Scott – Radical Candor· Stone & Heen – Thanks for the Feedback· Amy Edmondson – The Fearless Organisation · Daniel Coyle – The Culture Code · Marshall Rosenberg – non violent communication· Adam Grant – Think Again· Timothy Clarke – 4 stages of psychological safety· Trzeciak & Mazzarelli – CompassionomicsRegister to hear from Dr Bethan Richards, Australia's first Chief Wellbeing Officer and her team at Sydney LHD at the Pathways to Wellbeing conference 30.04.24https://slhd.health.nsw.gov.au/workplace-wellbeing-conferenc The Mind Full Medic Podcast is proudly sponsored by the MBA NSW-ACT Find out more about their service or donate today at www.mbansw.org.auDisclaimer: The content in this podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Ep. 183: Filipina On The Rise and Creating A Movement Based on Passion & Purpose Quote: “Resilience is not always a glamorous badge of honor." Summary: Hey, loves! Welcome to a special replay episode of The Brave Table, where we're excited to revisit and share an inspiring episode from the Filipinas On The Rise podcast hosted by the incredible Krystl Fabela. Today's replay features empowering stories, insightful conversations on often overlooked topics of generational trauma, specifically within the context of being a child of Filipino immigrants, and a celebration of the strength and resilience of Filipina women. In this episode, we talk about… Generational trauma and the importance of acknowledging and addressing this within the Filipino diaspora What it truly means to live life on our own terms regardless of cultural background How coming from a bi-racial background has paved my path in terms of life and relationships Resilience as a double-edged sword as a Filipina woman born from immigrant parents BioKrystl is a Founder, Podcaster, Speaker and Producer with a passion for storytelling, tackling cultural “taboo” topics and for arts-activism for socio-economic justice. She was born in the Philippines and at a young age, immigrated to Canada and eventually to Southern California, identifying as a 1.5th Generation Immigrant. Growing up, she always noticed the lack of Filipino women representation in different industries: from media, to finance, tech, as well as their missing education: on their history, contributions, and their multifaceted narratives. While doing my undergrad at UC San Diego, she became involved in activism after facing a sexual violence and began to fight for policy reform and justice for other survivors. This kicked off her love for advocacy and people's movements. After college, she followed her curiosity around innovation and tech and moved to San Francisco, leading engineering recruiting for several tech companies. She still noticed a lack of diverse representation, and was inspired to begin a Podcast that spotlighted Filipino who were at the top of their fields, and how they got there. Filipina on the Rise began and more importantly, a global movement of elevating Filipino women around the world.
