A few years ago, advertising got pretty serious, and for good reason. But now the industry is rediscovering its funny bone as brands look to create laughter, joy and connection with audiences. There's even a new humour category at Cannes this year. But why is it making a return and how do you ensure your work is ‘laugh with' rather than ‘laugh at'? For this episode, we're joined by Zane Radcliffe, Executive Creative Director at McCann Bristol, and Will Studd, Director of Animation at Aardman, to discuss the impact of humour, the stories behind the work, and how to get those authentic laughs. What we cover in this episode Looking back on the humour-fuelled 90s and why purpose took over Why humour is making a comeback How humour informs Will and Zane's work The story behind the latest ad for VOOM Nutrition Why big belly laughs aren't the only goal Finding the right funny for your sector (and knowing when to be serious) Will and Zane's favourite humorous ads About the speakers Will Studd is an award-winning Animation Director at Aardman. He has worked on projects for some of the worlds largest brands including Nike, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft, Heinz, BBC, GlaxoSmithKline and many more. Will also holds the Guinness World Records for smallest and largest stop motion films created, and a whole host of other awards including Cannes Lions, BAA, British Arrows Craft Award, Kinsale Shark, and RTS awards. Zane Radcliffe is a multi award-winning Executive Creative Director and writer with nearly 30 years experience creating campaigns for national and international brands. His work at McCann Bristol for clients like Refuge, Waterstones and Motability has won 5 Cannes Lions, 12 Creative Circle awards and pencils at D&AD and One Show. His work is often imbued with humour, including famous campaigns for Tango, Pot Noodle and John West. Zane is the author of three novels published by Black Swan. His debut won the WHSmith 'People's Choice' Award. About Aardman: Aardman is an independent, multi Academy Award® winning studio, based in Bristol.  For over 40 years, Aardman has entertained the world, creating much loved characters such as Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. From feature films and series, to advertising, games and interactive entertainment, all Aardman's content is built on four pillars: bold comedic ideas, relatable stories with global appeal, characters with heart, and a passion for craft.

In today's enlightening and insightful episode of the "Insiders Guide to Energy," hosts Chris Sass and Jeff McAulay delve into the innovative world of solar thermal technology with special guest Christophe Williams, CEO of Naked Energy. Discover the transformative power of combining photovoltaic (PV) and thermal energy to meet the global heat demand, a critical yet often overlooked aspect of the energy transition. Christophe shares insights into how Naked Energy's groundbreaking technology, Virtu, is setting new benchmarks in efficiency and sustainability by capturing up to 800 Watts per square meter of solar energy. Christophe is the CEO and Co-Founder at Naked Energy, a British design and engineering business, leading the global innovation in solar thermal and solar PVT. Prior to that, Christophe has been connected to the renewable energy industry for generations. His first inspiration was his grandfather Peter Williams who worked with renowned engineer Stephen Salter in the 1970s to develop 'the oscillating duck', a form of oscillating wave technology generating clean electricity. Christophe previously worked as a senior creative executive in the advertising industry for over fifteen years, gaining many awards from prestigious organisations such as ‘Creative Circle' and ‘Clio'. He has worked with major blue-chip clients and global brands such as Microsoft, Barclays, BMW, Sony and also directly with a number of UK government bodies, including DEFRA and the Central Office of Information on high profile advertising campaigns on sustainability. In today's episode, we learn about the challenges and opportunities in decarbonizing heat, which accounts for over half of the world's energy consumption and is predominantly fueled by fossil fuels. Christophe highlights Naked Energy's role in pioneering commercial and industrial applications of solar thermal technology, from hotels and hospitals to manufacturing, and their contribution towards achieving net-zero emissions. Join us, as we explore the technical, financial, and environmental aspects of solar thermal energy, the significance of energy density, and the synergy between PV and thermal technologies. Christophe also shares fascinating insights into Naked Energy's journey, their impact across nine countries, and the future of solar thermal technology in driving the global energy transition.

Should Liverpool win the Carabao Cup this season I'm sure they'll be happy. But it'll be a bonus.Their goal is to win the Premier League.Or maybe the European Cup.Creatives used to view Creative Circle Awards in the same way; delighted to win one, but their eyes were fixed on D&AD.Or BTAA.Or Campaign Press.Or Campaign Posters.Or The One Show.Or, a bit later, Cannes. In fact, my first ever advertising award was a Creative Circle Gold for radio - great, but I'd happily have swapped it for an ‘in book' at D&AD.But, they did have one thing going for them - their annual. It wasn't like the other annuals. The idiosyncratic way that they chose juries meant they featured an equally idiosyncratic batch of ads.One year they decided a single person should judge a whole category. (The year I won my gold for radio, fortunately the judge was Derek Day, arguably the most astute judge of radio on the planet. Thanks Derek!)Another year they decided that all judges had to be under thirty. They managed to rid the juries of those pesky award winners and Creative Directors, but to be fair, it again guaranteed that annual had different work in it than those other annuals. So it was worth a look.By 2006, with entries down, they could no longer afford to print an annual. As a registered charity, they only exist is to shine a light on the best British advertising has to offer, without an annual that light is going to be significantly dimmed. So why would agencies, who have finite awards budgets, continue to enter? It was a difficult question. What to do?What to do?A bald man with a twiddly moustache walks into frame ‘Ere, I'll have a go…let me run it!'

In episode 179 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed dedicating this week's episode to the photographer Colin Jones, and reflecting on supporting child refugees through photography, the need for clear and simple language in communication, and inclusion through events being held online. Plus this week photographer Dan Burn-Forti on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Dan Burn-Forti was born in Mortlake, West London.  Age 14, he began taking pictures with his mother's Fujica SLR and, after a little assisting and three slightly wasted years studying photography at Middlesex Polytechnic, he has worked ever since primarily in the fields of editorial and advertising photography.  His work spans a range of subjects including everything from celebrity portraiture to animals, reportage to cars, but his work is linked by a love for the absurdness of human beings and the incongruous oddness of modern life.  Over the years his pictures have appeared in numerous publications such as The Observer, Wired, Esquire, Tatler and The Sunday Telegraph.  These days he is increasingly working in the advertising field, having shot many global campaigns for a range of clients that includes Mercedes, HSBC, Sony, John Lewis, VW, Channel 4 and Nike.  In recent years he has also worked as a director, having directed a number of TV commercials for clients such as O2, MINI and Bulldog. Outside of his commissioned work, his passion is for unconstructed observed photography, work that has appeared in two self-published books titled Go Away and Golden Sun.  Burn-Forti has won many awards including The AOP Awards, The Taylor Wessing Prize, Creative Review Awards, Photo District News, the Creative Circle, Communication Arts and The American Photography Awards. www.danburnforti.com Dr. Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, documentary filmmaker, BBC Radio contributor and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019). I had such a laugh! Why? Because Vicki is a force of nature who tells it exactly how it is. That might be to do with her working-class background, her ability to blag her way into any job or just simply her infectious laughter. As usual we chart our way through her career from being fired from every job imaginable in the fashion industry to landing in advertising and recently becoming Chief Creative Officer at Havas London. I don’t want to reveal too much about this interview instead I’ll tell you some of the things you’ll learn from her story – the art of blagging, when to tell it’s time to move on from your job, the value of having a 3 months fuck off fund and how to negotiate your salary – plus much much more.

Back in the seventies there was a tv show called The Waltons. A depression era family mooched about Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains dealing with various social and moral issues, it was all very wholesome. At the end, after some member of the family had realised the error of their ways, they'd cut to the usual end device: A shot of their quaint wooden house at the night. We’d hear a voice ‘Goodnight Jon Boy’, gradually we'd hear all the other members of the family shout their goodnights. It was slightly chaotic and you were reminded that there were a lot of Waltons living cheek by jowl in that house. A decade later I was given a brief for The Observer Newspaper - a 48 sheet poster to promote their property section. Bingo! Show that end shot with ‘Goodnight Jon Boy’, ‘Goodnight Mary Lou’ plus another fifty goodnights and names in text, underneath was ‘If you’re looking for a bigger home, take a look in The Observer.’ The Creative Directors loved. The Account team presented it. The client bought it. Kind of. They thought it would make a better radio ad. Heartbreaking. Rather than have a big, glorious proof to put in my book, I’d have a little cassette. It got made. It got into D&AD, my first entry. It won gold at Creative Circle, my first award. Maybe it'd worked out best after all? I placed that little cassette in my book. It was the only thing in there that had won an award. I’d show my book to the great and the good at the agencies I hoped to graduate to, without exception they’d get to the end, see the cassette and start zipping the book up. ‘I have a radio ad…it’s won an award’ I’d say. 'Great' they'd say, continuing to zip. I’d push a bit further ‘Would you like to hear it?’ The answers would range from ‘I’ve got a meeting I have to be at’ to ‘No...I’m sure it’s pretty good if it’s won an award.’ No fucker would listen to it. My only award winning piece of work. What is it with radio? Why do we treat it like the runt of the media litter? A few months ago I thought it would be good to post something on radio advertising. Partly because I think it'll start to grow due to the booming podcast world, partly because it's the perfect subject matter for a podcast. Whilst thinking about how to go about it, I noticed that one of the best producers of radio ads had just closed up shop; Angell Sound. Owner, Nick Angell, had consistently produced some of our country's best radio ads over the last thirty or so years. But for a decade or so after the whole Walton’s episode (or ‘Waltongate’ as I call it), I’d avoided radio briefs whenever possible, so didn’t feel sufficiently knowledgeable to grill Nick. Fortunately, I have a mate who's more than qualified, Paul Burke, copywriter at BMP/DDB, JWT & AMV/BBDO. I was going to say he's one of the few to truly embrace the possibilities of radio, but I can't think of who the others would be? So maybe he's the only creative to truly embrace the possibilities of radio. It's lead him to set up his own radio production company, teach and promote the joys of radio. Not only that, like the man from Delmonte 'He say yes!'. So here they are. Enjoy.

Tune in to learn: The definition of conversational copy How to use storytelling in conversational copy The different conversational tones Whether a conversational tone work better in some medias more than others How to persuade your client to let you use a conversational tone How to be conversational without being cheesy Whether a conversational tone works for non-English readers. About Vikki: Vikki has been writing copy for 22 years. She specialises in Branding and Tone of Voice, and runs workshops around the world for D&AD and Creative Equals, as well as teaching copywriting at London's School of Communication Arts. She's a regular judge on international creative awards panels like D&AD, D&AD New Blood, DMA, Creative Circle, and AD STARS Korea, and last year was named one of Campaign magazine's top 30 female creative leaders.
