Andy Kershaw is entering his ninth year at the helm of the Miami Hurricanes swimming program in 2021-2022. The Hurricanes have ascended towards the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference since Kershaw's arrival to Coral Gables in 2013. As the head manager of the USA Swimming team for the past two Olympic Games (2012, 2016), Kershaw has provided Miami swimming with a wealth of domestic and international swimming experience. In 2016-17, Kershaw coached an Olympian, a World Short Course Championships qualifier, a World University Games qualifier, an NCAA Championships qualifier and led seven different swimmers to a total of 13 NCAA consideration cuts. In an impressive year for Hurricanes swimmers, Heather Arseth represented Mauritius at the 2016 Olympics, Roxanne Yu qualified for the World Short Course Championships as a Phillipine international, and Manon Viguier clinched a trip to the World University Games, where she will represent France. Two swimmers – seniors Angela Algee and Christina Leander – represented Miami at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, and Algee qualified for her second NCAA Championships under his guidance. Algee finished 38th in the 100 fly, 52nd in the 200 fly and 53rd in the 50 free nationally. Outside the lanes, Kershaw has placed a heavy emphasis on academics; the Miami swimming team's combined GPA of 3.5 in 2016-17 was the highest of any women's team on campus. The Hurricanes earned NCAA Academic honors in the fall and spring semester, three swimmers earned NCAA Academic All-America recognition, and the Hurricanes swimming program compiled the second-most community service hours of any program in the country. Miami posted seven dual meet wins in 2015-16 – its highest win total in five seasons – with a team that featured an NCAA Swimming Championships qualifier (Algee) and two U.S. Olympic trialists. Miami's win total increased in each of his first three years. As head manager of Team USA at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the American swimming contingent hauled in a world-leading 33 medals, including 16 golds. Kershaw joined the Hurricanes in the summer of 2013 after spending the previous 10 years with Southern Methodist University. After seven years as an assistant coach, Kershaw served as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for his final three seasons with the Mustangs. Kershaw has been a force for U.S. Swimming as head manager. In addition to serving in the role at the 2016 Olympics (Rio), he has been head manager for the 2015 World Championships (Kazan, Russia), 2012 Summer Olympics (London), the 2011 World Championships (Shanghai), the 2010 Pan Pacific Games (Irvine, Calif.) and the 2009 Duel in the Pool (Manchester, U.K.). Prior to his time with U.S. Swimming, he served as an assistant coach for the Slovenian national swimming team from 2004-06. “I think he is an incredible person,” said Teri McKeever, who served as head coach of the U.S. women's swimming team for the London Olympics. “He is very people-oriented, a great communicator, proactive and very driven. Andy is committed to the sport and to developing young people.” During his time at SMU, Kershaw coached 79 NCAA All-Americans and helped the Mustangs finish in the top 25 in the country six times. The Mustangs had six Conference USA Swimmers of the Year and 35 NCAA Academic All-Americans under his watch. In 2012, Kershaw was recognized as Honorable Mention NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year bycollegeswimming.com.Kershaw's coaching career began as a student assistant for the men's and women's team at Ohio and continued in that role until 1998, when he became the graduate assistant for the 1998-1999 seasons. As the assistant, he was primarily responsible for the distance group and oversaw the organization of the recruiting efforts. During his four years as the assistant, Kershaw helped lead the women's team to back-to-back Mid-American Team Championships, while guiding two Ohio swimmers to NCAA All-America performances. Alan is a friend who I've met since moving to Kyoto. This man has skill. When you look at his body of work it is self evident. Crisply composed and tuned to some of the best colouring you've ever seen, Alan is a pure pro. I particulary enjoyed in the course of our conversation getting into how Alan described his style having a melancholic quality to it. A quality which we both agreed does fit the Japanese aesthetic very well.

Bridget Algee-Hewitt, PhD, does amazing things. She is a Senior Research Scientist at Stanford University’s Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and a Quantitative Researcher in Facebook’s SBG Data Science Research and Development Division. Bridget is a biological anthropologist who studies how skeletal and genetic traits vary among contemporary peoples, across space and through time. She develops new computational methods, using machine learning and artificial intelligence, and geographic mapping algorithms, and hands-on DNA and osteology laboratory approaches to improve estimation of the personal identity parameters essential in forensic identification of unknown human remains and for the paleo-demographic reconstruction of past population histories in bio-archaeology. As a practicing forensic anthropologist and geneticist, she provides forensic casework consultation to the medico-legal community. She also delivers expert testimony for asylum petitions and advocates for policy change in support of undocumented migrant and refugee rights. Her social justice work focuses on immigration, displacement, poverty, and violence in Latin America, addressing in particular the crisis of migrant deaths along the U.S.-Mexico border. Bridget received her PhD in Biological Anthropology from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, an MA in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology at Bryn Mawr, and a BA in Classics and Art History from Mount Allison University. Bridget is an Advisory Board Member for the Certificate in Critical Consciousness and Anti-Oppressive Praxis in the Stanford School of Medicine and she is the Book & Resource Review Editor for the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. Listeners may recall past episodes in which we had guests who are experts in forensics, and in AI, and big data, and genetics, and anthropology, and even an artist who used randomly found public DNA to create sculptures of individuals, but Bridget’s work seems to be an integration of all of these areas and more. We begin with what drew her to biological anthropology and what biological anthropology constitutes. We then discuss her article in Medium with Casey Miller on US/Mexico border camps, COVID-19 and medical care and humanitarian relief efforts. Next we do a deep dive into her talk at the Stanford Institute for Human Artificial Intelligence conference on AI Ethics, Policy and Governance where she spoke on Race, Rights and Facial Recognition, and we discuss the social justice aspects that she spoke on—in particular how geopolitical situations can change our biology by causing trauma that may play-out in our epigenetics which can be passed on intergenerationally. It is truly fascinating, especially in the context of the Grand Ethical Challenge in this area of work. Related to this, Bridget was part of a panel on Forensic Genomics: New Frontiers and New Considerations, which focused on the difficult questions about whether and how DNA technologies are being used to identify “race” or “ethnicity” and the balance between ethical, legal and social implications and we learn her perspectives on this and what can be done as safeguards. We also circle back to her Advisory Board work on the nascent Certificate in Critical Consciousness and Anti-Oppressive Praxis in the Stanford School of Medicine and this program’s work, and her perspective on the “compound technology effect” and better ways to integrate and sort multidisciplinary effects on scientific work and its ramifications. She also has a new book coming out Remodeling Forensic Skeletal Age: Modern Applications and New Research Directions, which “presents a comprehensive understanding of the analytical frameworks and conceptual approaches salient both to the present chapters on forensic age estimation and to those seeking to grasp the current state of the field more broadly. It also includes a series of recommendations of best practice through the chapter-examples, which offer theory and guidance for data acquisition, technique and/or model development, and the assessment of impact of the adopted approaches, considering the assumptions that underlie of the forensic decision-making process.” Again, fascinating. Bridget wonderfully combines various disciplines and sciences via the connective thread of social justice and humanitarian intervention which is inspiring for us all and demonstrates how to live a life in full in the service of knowledge and helping others. “Living a Life in Full” is the conversation you always wanted to have with that person who gave an amazing TED talk, or the author of one your favorite books, or that inspirational Olympian you always wanted to know more about. This show is for the intellectually curious. You want to not just know more about the interesting and the innovative, but also what makes them tick, and maybe even what makes them laugh. It’s graduate-level conversations with those making a difference in the world and the lives of others. This show brings you new ideas and approaches so you can live a life in full. The show is equal parts information and inspiration, but without the aphorisms and Pablum. We cover a wide range of topics in an engaging way—from Burning Man to The Renaissance Weekend, from the United Nations to top universities, Nobel Laureates to astronauts—we have an amazing Rolodex. Interviewees are a who’s who of high performance athletes, bestselling authors, high-caliber leaders, world changing humanitarians, innovative researchers, amazing start-up founders, clever life-hackers, paradigm busting thought-leaders and global innovators.

Hello JJAB Listeners. My name is Danielle Sutherland, I am a Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor. May is Mental Health awareness month, and since we have been under stay at home orders since March, it is important for us to stay vigilant in keeping our minds and bodies health. If you have taken a Youth Mental Health First Aid class you learned about our ALGEE, our action plan. ALGEE is an acronym for: Asses for risk of suicide or harm Listen nonjudgmentally Give reassurance and information Encourage appropriate professional help Encourage self-help and other support strategies If you or someone you know may be at risk of harming themselves its important to let them know that you are there to support them. Here are some examples of how you may start that conversation: I've noticed that you don't talk to your friends anymore, can I help you connect with them? I've noticed that you've been spending a lot of time by yourself, would you like to go for a walk, play game, or bake some cookies? I know that these past few months have been hard for you. I'm here for you if you'd like to talk or I can help you find someone you feel more comfortable with. If the person you are concerned about is close to you, they may not want to open up to you for a variety of reasons… and that's ok. We have lots of people in our community who can help you connect with the right people. Here in Los Alamos you can reach out to your school counselor, JJAB Resource Specialists, or you can call the suicide prevention hotline. Discussion of mental health first aid and utilizing the action plan of ALGEE
During his recent trip down to the Crucial FX Origin experience, James took himself off to a quiet corner to speak to Jenner Carter, the head of marketing at Lime Venue Portfolio and the marketing chair for the industry association, HBAA. Jenner described her passion for improving mental health within the industry and explained what mental health first aid is all about. Offering examples of her own experience with ill mental health, both in her personal and professional life, Jenner informed James that the HBAA first introduced the course to her. The mental health first aid course teaches participants how to offer help and support to people experiencing “a crisis”. Describing it as similar to a physical first aid course, Jenner revealed that mental health is different in regard to recognising symptoms: “It’s difficult to spot the signs of [poor mental health] but this course helps you spot the signs then signpost people off to the relevant places to get help.” Having been on the course, Jenner is now a mental health first aider. Talking about this, Jenner informed James that one of the things she learnt was the ALGEE model: Assess/Approach/Assist Listen Give Encourage Enquire Touching on the stigma of mental health, Jenner stated there is a definite “misunderstanding’ surrounding the topic. However, thanks to recent media coverage, there is growing support for people who need help. Relating mental health to the events industry, James asked about the relationship between stress and ill mental health: “People may think they are just suffering from stress and not recognise they are ill.” Agreeing with this, Jenner stated that those who suffer from prolonged symptoms of poor mental health need access to support. Everyone is different in terms of their ability to cope with, and release, stress. Making lists, eating chocolate or going for a run are all ways of winding down and releasing the day’s stresses. It is important for our overall mental health that we each find and practise ways to de-stress after each day.
