Welcome back to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! In our continuing coverage of Trump's first 100 days in office, we check in on aviation safety, the silicon-valley style DOGE takeover of the Treasury's payment systems, El Salvador opening its prisons to American prisoners (so nice of them), and the biggest BEST update on tariffs everrrrrr. Just kidding, this President is a joke. But we're also keeping an eye on EGGflation and sharing weekly updates since apparently that's what matters most to American voters. Who has a morning routine, and more importantly, who is good at actually sticking to one? Mel Robbins has inspired our panel to take part in her 7-step routine for kickstarting your morning. We share our experiences - did it work for us? How can we embrace the "let them" theory to protect our own peace and inner harmony? This week's recommendations are all themed to the episode - self-help books! 'The 4-Hour Workweek' by Tim Ferris, 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck' by Mark Manson, and 'Don't Believe Everything You Think' by Joseph Nguyen (Andrew), 'How to Do the Work' by Dr. Nicole LaPera (Laura), 'Reasons to Stay Alive' and 'Notes on a Nervous Planet' by Matt Haig (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Who doesn't love a little gossip? Vox inspires us to dig deeper and reflect on why gossiping can feel so satisfying sometimes. Gossiping can go too far though, and we've all learned this lesson in some ways we share in AD. Have we ever gotten in trouble for gossiping on the show? Uh... Learn more about your ad choices. In today's episode, American author, speaker and blogger Mark Manson discusses how the mantra of relentless positivity, which drives so much of the self-help industry, is full of pitfalls. He explains how negative emotions have a purpose - to drive us to do something - and why the willingness to look like an idiot occasionally guards against self-entitlement. He gives us tips on how to be realistic in our lives, how to maintain hope - and what not to do with cyber stalkers.  Hosting this talk is Good Weekend deputy editor, Greg Callaghan.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's plenty of self help books on the shelves, but one in particular has cut through the nonsense for millions of people.   Mark Manson is the author behind ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck', which has sold more than 20 million copies since its publication in 2016.  Manson is making his way to New Zealand in November as part of his ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck Tour', where he talks about what made the book a success and offers more “no-BS” live advice.  He told Mike Hosking the book stemmed from his disillusionment with the self help material he'd consumed when he was young.  “I thought a lot of it was very... just BS, and Pollyanna,” Manson said.  “So in the early 2010s, I started asking myself like, okay, what would actually like, if there was a form of self help that was just very honest about how difficult life's problems can be and how difficult the solutions to life's problems can be, what would that look like?”  Although he was optimistic the book would do well upon its release, the sheer extent of it's success was a surprise to Manson.  “It's the extent of it that was just so mind blowing and, and still to this day, it is kind of surprising to me."  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So you're feeling unmotivated: it's hard to get anything done let alone get out of bed, and the voice in your head is telling you “get your butt up,” “stop wasting your precious time,” “why are you sleeping in AGAIN”… what do you do?? This week's episode is a part two to motivation (check out eps. 28 for part one, one of our most popular episodes in 2022!). The dynamic duo share how their approach to motivation has changed over time and the hacks they've used to help maintain more consistent energy levels. As humans, it's easy for us to compartmentalize things into “good or bad”, “wrong or right”, “all or nothing.” For example: Being productive, pushing yourself, striving to be the best = good Lacking motivation, wasting time, staying in bed = bad But these labels aren't true, life isn't black and white, and living this way is not sustainable in the long run. Tune in to find out how they have learned to be more gentle with themselves through embracing periods of low energy, and how they have turned to curiosity and hacking habits to help spark motivation in their daily lives. We appreciate all of you for being here! ❤️ Say hello, give us feedback, or share any topics/questions you'd like to hear in future episodes. Drew Birnie was in the middle of a PDH program in neuroscience when he started working with Mark Manson. “That came out of left field,” he told me. Manson initially hired Birnie as a researcher to help the author “synthesize” complicated ideas. These days, Mark Manson is one of the most famous authors alive thanks to 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.' Birnie has been with him since the early days and currently overseas website content, SEO, and email. In this interview, we talk about being curious by nature, blurred responsibility lines with small teams, why he enjoys being a generalist, how they set up Manson's premium account for the website and the problem with today's market encouraging creatives to “niche down.” If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? There's no hiding it - I've been absent for a few months. Ironically - in the midst of Season 3 - which was dubbed 'The Confidence Season' - I lost my confidence and hid in a cupboard for several weeks. Occasionally peeking out and looking at the lonely microphone, but just unable to commit myself to speaking out loud and putting it out there. For those who walk amongst us seeking to grow and develop as people (isn't that everybody? Apparently not I've recently been informed, so I had to make the distinction), building confidence is part of that human development journey. But whether you want to become a more confident speaker, a more confident cook, or a more confident lover - there will be times when you stand on the platform with your ticket for the Confidence Train in your hand - and when it pulls into the station - for reasons unknown, you find yourself pocketing the ticket and saying 'not today'. Anyway, that's been me - boohoo! Poor little snowflake Nathy isn't sure if what she's doing is good enough to be out here in the podcast playground with all the other impressive pod-people. The good news is - I picked up Mark Manson's book 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck' https://www.amazon.com.au/Subtle-Art-Not-Giving-Counterintuitive/dp/0062457713 and slapped myself round the head with it - particularly the chapter about not being special. If you haven't read this book, and you're interested in growth - I highly recommend. Anyway - I'm not that special (according to Mark Manson - although he's never met me, so I still have that ace in the hole), so I can just put out whatever the fuck I like and say whatever the fuck I like and noone will care. I suddenly feel free. If you've been struggling with any of the above - my darlings - this episode is for you! Mwah!!!

In this episode, we talk about why a podcast like SFR should fail entirely because positivity often leads us to desiring more, ultimately leading to a negative experience. Then, we dive into why stories like the ones told at SFR are genuine and DO stick...all using the freakin' incredible wisdom from Mark Manson's book 'The Subtle Art of not Giving a F*ck.' Warning: this episode is covered in F bombs because, well, so is Mark Manson.
