Drawing on philosophy and personal experiences, he explains how an excessive focus on outcomes can backfire and undermine performance. Sprouse stresses the importance of maintaining a calm mindset and breaking big goals into smaller steps to circumvent the "backwards law" trap.
So you know how everyone's always like, “Think positive thoughts!” and “Just be happy!”? Well, there's this thing called the Backwards Law that says the more you try to be happy, the less happy you actually are. Crazy, right? But it makes pretty good sense if you don't think about it too much. The Backwards Law says that when you chase after something super hard, you just end up pushing it away. It's like trying to go to sleep. The harder you try, the less you sleep. You're so focused on the idea of sleeping that you're stressing yourself out and not actually sleeping. Pretty ironical, right? But here's the thing: once you know about the Backwards Law, you can kind of use it to your advantage. Instead of trying so hard all the time, you can just loosen up and let things happen naturally. It's like when you stop obsessing over remembering something and suddenly it pops into your head. Maybe the secret is to not stress about making things happen, so then they can happen! This whole Backwards Law thing is from a guy named Alan Watts. He was a philosopher, which means he thought a lot about life and truth I guess. He basically said that when you stop trying so hard and just go with the flow, things work out better. Like, instead of stressing about being happy, just live your life and happiness will come naturally. But what does this mean for us? Well, maybe we should stop stressing so much about being perfect and happy all the time. It's okay to not always be super positive. Sometimes you have a bad hair day, right? We can try letting happiness find us instead of chasing it around all the time. Anyway, next time you find yourself struggling with something, just remember the Backwards Law. Maybe just relax and let things happen. Why paddle so hard when you can just go with the flow, right? You might end up getting what you want without even trying. How awesome would that be? If it works, it's a pretty big deal, and if it doesn't, at least you got to chill out for a while._______________________________________Visit Jedvaita.com and receive a free copy of The Tao of the Large-Breasted Goddess with the Shapely Behind: The Story of the Writing of the Tao Te Ching ( a play in 6 acts), and to receive email updates when new content is made available._______________________________________ WisefoolPress.com: The Search Is Overhttps://www.wisefoolpress.com/ Jedvaita.com: The Way the World Unfoldshttps://jedvaita.com/ Amazon Jed McKenna Pagehttps://www.amazon.com/-/e/B001JS057A_______________________________________The fool who persists in his folly will become wise.-William Blake_______________________________________
LIFE COACHING: The Backwards Law Returns Welcome, fellow adventurers, to another episode of Join Up Dots! Today, we're delving into the whimsical world of the backwards law - where the more you chase something, the more it seems to slip away, leaving us scratching our heads and laughing at life's quirky twists. Picture this: you're snuggled up in bed, trying to catch those elusive Z's. But the harder you try to fall asleep, the more awake you become! It's like your brain has a mind of its own, playing a game of midnight hide-and-seek. Who knew counting sheep could be so tricky? Ever found yourself circling like a hungry vulture in a parking lot, hunting for that golden parking space? The more you obsess over finding it, the farther it seems to drift away, like a mirage in a desert of cars. It's a comedy of errors, with you starring as the lead in "The Great Parking Lot Pursuit." And let's not forget the love magnet mystery! You dream of finding your perfect match, but the more you chase after love, the more it dances out of reach. It's like Cupid's playing a game of cosmic hide-and-seek, and you're perpetually "it." Now, let's talk diets. You're on a mission to shed those extra pounds, armed with willpower and a mountain of kale. But the moment you swear off sweets, they start haunting your dreams like mischievous dessert ghosts. It's a battle of wits between you and your fridge, with chocolate chip cookies as the ultimate temptation. Ah, stress - the unwelcome guest at life's party. The more you worry about getting everything done, the more your to-do list seems to multiply like rabbits. It's a stress spiral of epic proportions, with you caught in the whirlwind of your own making. But fear not, dear listeners! Amidst the chaos and confusion, there's a silver lining to be found. The backwards law reminds us to embrace life's absurdities, laugh at its quirks, and roll with the punches. Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones we stumble into by accident. So, next time you find yourself chasing your own tail, remember: the backwards law is just life's way of keeping us on our toes. Embrace the chaos, enjoy the ride, and don't forget to laugh along the way.
Welcome back to the final part of our two-part episode with Gad Saad. In this segment, we delve deeper into Gad's unique perspectives on life, happiness and truth. He shares the evolutionary reasons for religion, the dangers of confusing equality of opportunities with equality of outcomes, and the high price of personal freedom. Gad walks us through his insights on why well-intentioned ideas don't necessarily solve problems and how happiness can be found in the face of failure and rejection. Don't miss out on the conclusion of this enlightening discussion. “The only road to individual dignity and sustained existential happiness is to adopt an ethos of personal agency. You are the ultimate architect of your own happiness, so get to work.” -Gad Saad After watching this episode, you'll be equipped with a fresh perspective, understand the true nature of happiness, and will hopefully be inspired to foster an anti-fragile mindset. Discover why your ability to solve novel problems is key, why apologies can sometimes be an attack on your identity, and so much more. Don't miss out on this riveting conversation with the ever-authentic and truthfully controversial Gad Saad! Saad Truths: “Groups that are religious out survive groups that are not religious through the mechanisms of greater cooperation communality cohesion. So they are very earthly biological reasons for why religiosity confers greater survival rates to the religious than the non-religious.” “The justification for why you should have a punitive progressive tax is that as you make more money, you pay more and more inexorably very aware of it. Exactly. So that argument stems from exactly of the things that I talk about in the parasitic mind, which is the confusing of equality of opportunities with equality of outcomes.” “I think that if you can crack those two things in whatever profession you choose, creativity, impulse, temporal freedom, you're well on your way to being happy.” Follow Gad Saad: Website: https://www.gadsaad.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GadSaad YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GadSaad Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctorgadsaad/ SPONSORS: Visit https://bit.ly/WildHealthImpact to apply for membership for a better alternative to traditional healthcare. Welcome to Impact Theory! I've got an exciting two-part episode for today with the intriguing, at-times controversial, Gad Saad. Known for his controversial views and unique approach to life, Gad believes that happiness is not an end goal but a byproduct of specific behaviors. He shares his insights and views of why the path to happiness is sometimes controversial when truth and authenticity are your highest values. Though this has led to death threats, Gad Saad, a renowned author, YouTuber, and award-winning professor who asserts that happiness is not a destination, but a byproduct of specific behaviors. “The only road to individual dignity and sustained existential happiness is to adopt an ethos of personal agency. You are the ultimate architect of your own happiness, so get to work.” -Gad Saad We open the door for deeper conversation as Gad explores our need for intellectual variety, operating from a non-fractured personality, and being truly antifragile in the sense of being able to handle opposing views and beliefs. Stay tuned for the second part of this compelling discussion as we start digging how an absurd amount of failure and rejections translate into happiness. Saad Truths: “It's very very difficult for me to not be authentic if I need to defend some truth claim, [...] so the death threats come from the fact that I have to decide, am I going to be a fanatic and walk away from a defense of truth, or am I going to be authentic not only to myself, but to truth by stepping on some toes? And regrettably, at times I step on the wrong toes, which yields some death threats.” “Don't worry about taking a statin to lower your LDL scores. Make sure that you have two, three, four friends that you really trust and love and you can engage in reciprocal rituals with.” “I don't think you can solve some of the most important novel problems if they're not at the cusp of interdisciplinary.” “Having a conciliate mindset, being a generalist, in my view, are probably the best ways to crack novel problems.” Follow Gad Saad: Website: https://www.gadsaad.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GadSaad YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GadSaad Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctorgadsaad/ SPONSORS: Visit https://bit.ly/WildHealthImpact to apply for membership for a better alternative to traditional healthcare. Mark Manson, Author of "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" explains why most self help is backwards, and how to actually improve your life and wellbeing. He shares his perspective on life, death, success, and finding our purpose. Mark recounts how the surprising death of his friend shifted his view on life, and why it's important that we lean how to die before we die. He describes the challenges he faced after becoming 'an overnight success' and selling 10 million copies of his book - challenging the idea that success can make you happy. He uses 'The Paradox of Progress' to explain why the wealthiest countries are also the most unhappy. Mark also explains the fundamentals for building a healthy relationship, and how to use the context of the past to inspire gratitude for the present. Mark Manson shares his why the best things in life are all backwards. This is part 2 of 2. Episode 2721: [Part 2] The Backwards Law - Why the Best Things in Life Must Be Let Go by Mark Manson Mark Manson was a full-time professional dating coach for men from 2008 until 2011. Sick of the industry, he wrote his first book, Models: Attract Women Through Honesty, and changed the name and focus of his business to address broader self-development topics for men. The book took off, selling tens of thousands of copies. As he branched out into deeper issues of masculinity, self-worth, and the changing cultural landscape, the site grew. By 2013, he had begun writing about larger cultural issues — gender relations, happiness, ambition, life purpose, and cultural perspectives he had gathered while living in various countries around the world. Despite the fact that the business was still directed at men, thousands of women began reading and asking for advice as well. That same year, he made the leap to his own site and domain, broadening the demographics of his audience. The site exploded, garnering millions of views each month. If you want to destroy your creative process and cause personal misery, distress, and even burnout, tell yourself this: “This must be the most important thing I have done, and no disappointment is allowed.” Although seemingly noble and logical, this mindset backfires in a harmful way. You are acutely aware of everything that does not match your personal utopia (which is impossible to create). You attach your identity to it, and thus your amygdala, a k a survival warning lamp, is on steroids. So how do we remedy this? By inverting the above message. He started his first blog on dating advice in 2008. It became hugely popular and gained hundreds of thousands of readers. In 2009, Manson decided to travel the world for the next seven years while working remotely. He ended up visiting more than 65 countries. In 2010, he started a new blog called Post Masculine which provided general life advice for men. On this blog, he posted an article under the same name as this book. The article was so well received he decided to turn it into a book. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck went on to become a New York Times best seller. Manson has been featured on NBC, CNN, Fox News, the BBC and Time magazine. In October 2018, Penguin Random House announced that Manson would work with Will Smith to write the actor's autobiography. Manson's work has been translated into more than 60 languages. Introductionhttps://geni.us/subtle-free-audiobook (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck) is designed to help clarify what you choose to find important in your life, essentially what you choose to give a f*ck about. We often don't realize how frequently we're giving a f*ck about something that doesn't matter. Manson aims to help you spot when you are placing too much importance on self-help ideas and how to start giving a f*ck about the most important things. The book has sold over 13 million copies. According to Amazon, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck was the most-read nonfiction book in 2017. Shot #1 - Avoid Constantly Pursuing Satisfaction Before he became a famous author, Bukowski was an alcoholic gambler who was frequently rejected by publishers. It was not until Bukowski turned 50 that an editor finally accepted a piece of his work. The public and media described his story as the American dream. But Bukowski knew the reality: He was still a loser. He wasn't a best-selling author. He was fine with this, though. This self-acceptance is what drew so many people to him and his books. Bukowski has the words “Don't try” written on his gravestone. This approach is entirely different from modern society's expectations of how we can become happier, richer, healthier and more successful by merely wanting it. Manson believes this approach means we will feel like we are never enough. True happiness is caring only about essential matters. The Backwards Law was introduced by the British philosopher Alan Watts. The idea is that the more you pursue feeling better, the less satisfied you become. Constantly pursuing satisfaction will reinforce that you lack it in the first place. Manson rephrases this as: The pursuit of positive experience is itself a negative experience. The acceptance of negative experience is itself a positive experience. So, you can create positive experiences through the tolerance of negative experiences. Shot #2 - Stop Believing You Are Unique Manson believes that self-help books and modern society are obsessed with the idea that we are all unique. This idea has created a society of entitled people who expect everything to go right for them all the time. Entitlement is feeling as though you deserve to be happy without sacrificing for it. There are two types of entitlement: Grandiose narcissism, which is like saying: I'm...

British Philosopher Alan Watts talked about a concept called "The Backwards Law", which states that the more you chase something, the more it will move further ahead and you won't be able to reach it. If you're trying to sleep, you won't be able to sleep. If you're trying to be happy, you won't be happy and similarly this effect manifests itself in almost all aspects of our lives. So, in this podcast segment, we will understand what is this Backwards Law, how does it work and what do you have to do to be more successful and happier.

In this episode of casual Friday: - We all have equal value - "The Backwards Law" - Sarcastic MeditationsMy website here. My Instagram here.
The backwards Law is a very interesting concept brought to the world by the late philosopher Allan Watts. Now you may not have heard of the backwards law, but in its simplest form its a focus on what we haven't got in our lives which brings more of the same into our lives. You see we all have positions where we would like to move to something better and so focus in what we need to do to get that thing. You can call this goal setting, ambition, dream chasing.....whatever you wish to call it. Which is all totally acceptable as this is what humans do in life and should be encouraged by all means. However, when we carry a sense of unhappiness with ourselves whilst working towards the goal we get rooted to the spot and lose track of what we need to be doing. Allan Watts, the late modern philosopher described this feeling of staying where we are when he made his famous backwards law speech. Allan Watts The Backwards Law The modern philosopher Alan Watts referred to this as “the backwards law” which is “the idea that the more you pursue feeling better all the time, the less satisfied you become, as pursuing something only reinforces the fact that you lack it in the first place. As he says "The more you desperately want to be rich, the more poor and unworthy you feel, regardless of how much money you actually make. The more desperately you want to be sexy and desired, the uglier you come to see yourself, regardless of your actual physical appearance. The more you desperately want to be happy and loved, the lonelier and more afraid you become, regardless of those who surround you.” Its a fine line to walk at the best of times. What he is saying is "be grateful for what you already have, but also feel free to want more" which of course goes against many of the rules set in todays self-development age. Be better, be slimmer, be more focused, be more, be more, be more. Im not personally sure that its a path that i can walk all the time, as the backwards law i'm sure will hold me back from my goals. Do You Feel You Are In A World Of Lacking? If you do feel that more often than not the world is dealing you a bad set of cards then perhaps a change of outlook is required. Perhaps you are operating 100% within the rules of the backwards law and focusing in on the wrong things. Its funny when you think that life is giving you everything you need but you are missing it as you are looking the wrong way. And the right way isnt where you think you should be looking at all. The right way is always within yourself and accepting the gifts that you already have in your life. Thats the backwards law for you in its backwards glory.....you already have what you need and truly require. So now its time to accept and build from that point.
In this minisode, Andrew breaks down Alan Watts teaching on the "Backwards Law: the desire for a more positive experience is a negative experience, and the acceptance of a negative experience is a positive experience." He talks about the cultivation of "equanimity", and how this is developed in a practical way through meditation.
I admit it, I have an unhealthy relationship with my goals, dreams, and desires. I have always loved ideas like the Law of Attraction, SMART goals, and “if you can see it you can achieve it.” These are all good strategies and they work. I’ve just never been able to embrace them enough where they feel authentic. Some of the discomfort I feel around goalsetting and visualization is, I often feel unworthy or selfish for wanting amazing things to happen to me. My altruistic desires seem to be grappling with selfishnes, self-worth, and ego. I fantasize about, if "this" happens to me or if I get "this", THEN, everything will be OKKKKKK. Or, if I had these "things" or was "this" successful then you would like me and I would be enough. So, you can imagine why I have a hard time getting started with visualization and goalsetting tools. Even when I'm able to get into a visualization process, it doesn't last. The real funky thing is, even when it works and I get exactly what I want, it never feels as good as I thought it would. It always feels anti-climactic. Now, I can come up with all these nice reasons why my goals and dreams are good. I often talk about how, all I want to help people and serve... Which is true... Sometimes! I often end up coming from a place where deep down, I just want to be liked and excepted... And I don't even realize it. On the flipside, there are perspectives like the “Backwards Law” which Alan Watts talks about. He says, wanting positive experiences is actually negative and accepting negative experiences is actually positive. The more you want to be rich, the poorer you feel. The happier and loved you want to be, the lonelier and more afraid you become. The Backwards Law is more in line with my way of thinking most of the time yet, it can be just as tricky. Sometimes I think this acceptance crap feels a lot like a defeatist mentality. For example, I know how to make it look like I'm in acceptance, yet I really feel like a victim to circumstance, as if life is happening to me I instead of for me. Then, I start secretly beating myself up. Herein lies my hypothesis, which is, EVERYTHING boils down to one's ability to combat fear, insecurity, low self-worth and the ability to be in the moment. Like, really in the moment, exactly the way it is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting nice things, to be a successful, and to want the most out of life. As a matter of fact, it’s probably healthy. However, I find that when I focus on where I want to go or where I wish I was, I often get distracted by invy, FOMO, comparison, and turn to self-loathing and beating myself up. The magic happens when I grow the relationship with my higher power, my inner most self, serving others, and living in the moment... not regretting the past or fearing the future, or wishing things were different... all while working towards that which I desire most when I feel safe in the sunlight of the spirit. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Where do you fall on this spectrum? Do you like goals and visualization? Do you like the Backwards Law?
This week we discuss a philosophical concept called, 'The Backwards Law', by Alan Watts using a passage Ayesha found on Pinterest. We had a little trouble figuring out the purpose of this theory and how it could help people in their self-improvement journeys and so we could not come to a reasonable conclusion about what we could learn from it. However, it fostered a good conversation where at one point Aasima questioned why Ayesha believes a person should not be striving to reach happiness in their life.

Good morning and good coffee everybody! Today I wanna share with you something I came across over the weekend called the backwards principal by Alan Watts. The Backwards Law Have you ever wanted something so bad and didn't get it? Ever look for a boyfriend or girlfriend so much and find no one or the opposite of what you were looking for? How about desperately needing a job and getting no callbacks after going to multiple interviews? A man named Alan Watts who was a great speaker back in the 60s and 70s came up with the term “backwards law” or “law of reverse effort”. Basically what this means is the more you try to escape, prevent, remove or stop the negative experiences of life, the more negative the negative becomes. When you focus your attention so hard on what you want or essentially LACK, you end up pushing away what you want and attracting more of what you lack. Look at it this way, have you ever tried to think of a song, a word or a name and you KNOW you know it but it just won't come to you? You try and try to remember but it doesn't come. So, you let it go. 2, 5, 10 or 30 minutes later BOOM it pops into your mind. WHY??? The answer is simple - you let go. You stopped trying to force it to come to you and when you did, it showed up. That is just an example, but this law goes much deeper than trying to remember a song. The desire to constantly be in a state of happiness can and does actually lead to more unhappiness. The desire to be in a state of happiness is really telling yourself that you ARE NOT happy NOW. So this state of unhappiness becomes deeper and deeper the more you try and remove it Wanting something so bad can actually prevent you from getting it. So much of wanting is really living in the space of what you DON'T have. So what is the solution? Acceptance for what is. I know this answer is NOT attractive at all. But it is true. There is a time for everything in our lives. A time for love, a time for laughter, a time for happiness, sadness, loss, suffering and more. This IS LIFE. When you can accept what is you open the door for what could be. Resisting what is only creates more turmoil and suffering. Gratitude. Here we are again speaking about gratitude. Being grateful for even the smallest things in your life allows for more things to enter your life. Being in a state of gratitude will help you look at more and more things as a blessing rather than a curse. Letting go. Put what you desire out into the world and let it go. Often times we get caught up in the HOW. How is this or that going to happen? MInd your business! That is not of your concern. How something manifests is irrelevant to you. A lot of times you need to get out of the way and trust the process. 32LAUNCH 3.Believe. Belief in yourself is so powerful. Believe that you have that thing you want. Imagine yourself with it, what does it feel like, to have it or to be it? 2.Act as if you have, its yours and you are. This strengthens your belief even more. Act like the person you want to be, act like you have the thing you desire. 1.Let it go! Allow God/Universe to do their job. Don't get caught up in the how of things. Trust God. In this episode Andrew discusses a term coined by Alan Watts as "The Backwards Law". The backwards law states, "the desire for more positive experience is itself a negative experience. And, paradoxically, the acceptance of one’s negative experience is itself a positive experience”.
Our current productivity culture appears to peddle a false promise: If we can just get better organised, we really can do everything - no tough life choices or trade-offs need to be made! Guardian journalist and author Oliver Burkeman joins Igor and Charles to discuss the ironic effects of the pursuit of productivity, the inbox zero phenomenon, the futile denial of limitations, the Jevons paradox, Keynes’ concerns about a future society drowning in leisure time, Nietzsche’s suspicions regarding our beloved busyness, the social complexities of sending back a poorly made coffee, and the importance of living a life that is larger than politics. Igor wonders if the ‘slow-food’ philosophy can be extended to start a ‘slow-work’ movement in social and medical sciences to help address replication concerns, Oliver explains why he sat on the London underground loudly calling out the names of approaching stations to a carriage full of strangers, and Charles reveals how a ‘free-coffees-for-nice-customers’ policy can badly backfire, particularly if your customers are British. Welcome to Episode 17. Special Guest: Oliver Burkeman.

Continuing this week... Let's discuss "the Backwards Law" by Alan Watts. Wanting, desire etc. are all inherently negative experiences. In this episode I share with you the way to understand the difference between having a goal to experience something you don't have AND not experiencing lack as you work toward this new experience. It'll all make sense on the audio.
Brandon talks about a sometimes-baffling principle, the "Backwards Law", that seems to keep us apart from things we obsess over, and generally brings about the opposite of what we may desire if we try "too hard" or otherwise attune to the opposite frequency of what is being focused upon. He also shares an Alan Watts clip called "This Is Why You're Not Happy" that adds Alan's perspective on this nuanced topic.
In this episode, Yvonne and Jeff discuss: What net effect is and the unicorn that The Rock and Selena Gomez use and we can use too! How his music career provided a great foundation for where he is today. Getting comfortable with who you are and what you’ve done. The economic benefit of empathy. The Social Media 10 Explosion Training Guide. Key Takeaways: The Law of Reverse Effort (aka the Backwards Law) – the harder you try to do something, the less proficient you are at that thing. If you want to excel at something, you have to not try so hard. Let people see who you really are, not just the perfect parts. When you engage with people at a level of genuine advocacy, there is an incredible multiplier effect in all of your life. Financial success is not the end all be all. The number one driver of human existence is belonging. SYSTEM – Save YourSelf Time Energy and Money “A lot of times we don't learn the lesson because the implications are too inconvenient for us” — Jeff Lerner About Jeff Lerner: Author, speaker, musician, serial entrepreneur... Jeff spent most of his 20s paying his way through school as a jazz piano player in his hometown of Houston, Tx. Working up to 9 “gigs” per week for 10 years he graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of Houston with a major in Music Composition and a minor in Finance. Realizing that the life of a musician was a hard road but that he loved the freedom of being self-employed he used what little time he had between school and playing music attempting to start businesses with little success. In 2008, after 7 failures including a restaurant franchise that left him with ruined credit and over $400,000 in debt at age 29, he finally found his calling with online marketing. In the decade that followed Jeff not only paid off his debt but has started numerous successful companies including an Inc 5000 Digital Agency, an online education company, a consulting company, a real estate company, and a private coaching business. Jeff is also married and an active father to 4 children who works out, reads, and plays the piano 6 days a week.
