The brilliant Alexis Dubus has made an entire career out of not only playing a character, but playing a misanthropic Frenchman, Marcel Lucont and that presents quite a winding path here in 2025, especially as Dubus is set to play a handful of American dates as Lucont coming up very soon. We have a badinage as well as an in-depth chat about Alexis' journey in and out of himself and Marcel and how he is forging ahead with a character drenched in tasty irony. Follow Alexis @alexisdubuscomedy and Marcel Lucont @marcel.lucont and get tickets for his 4/21 show at The Elysian here. Alexis Dubus tells us what it's like to be in Red Dwarf! He's an award winning stand-up and character comic (you may know his alter ego, Marcel Lucont) and his childhood fandom of Red Dwarf was a formative influence on his comedy. So imagine his delight when he was asked to guest star in series 11! It's very cool to hear his behind-the-scenes stories. What's more, having performed his own standup show, A R*ddy Brief History Of Swearing, all around the world, Alexis has an expert insight into just why “smeg” is such a smegging good made-up cuss word. The lucky devil also gets to unpick a true classic with us: series 5 episode 6, Back To Reality. In a quest to discover why it's such a blatantly good bit of telly, we cover: Timothy Spall's perfect performance. The cruelty of the Despair Squid. Audacious plotting. Extraordinary world-building. Rule-breaking editing. Living in a simulation. And… Duane Dibbley?!SO WHAT IS IT?Better Than Life is the pod where comedians talk Red Dwarf, the greatest sci-fi sitcom, one episode at a time. It's our first Dad! And his wife Pauline, and their toddler son, Ronnie… this episode definitely gives you a sense of what's to come in parenthood. Oof, this is a great episode, I reckon. The thumbnail just doesn't do it justice (it's really hard putting text on fountains, guys - REALLY HARD). Wynter's a smart cookie and we have a good, thorough chat about independent producing. Smeriously. I rectum-end it. Jenny Wynter is a Queensland-based singer/songwriter/performance maker and she's a gem. We not only manage to rattle off some pretty damn insightful political commentary, but we covered the joy of silliness, quite a lot more about lettuce than you would expect from cabaret artists, a labrador called Bublé, working smarter not harder, the future of performance vs online production, and how phenomenal Mad Max Fury Road is. So good... FANG IT!! Since the recording of this podcast (June 2016) I have had my own brush with not being able to walk for a while so it's been quite enlightening to listen to this again...wow. Who knows what the future will bring? P.S. If you do like the theme tune Fang It (To Tony's Place) you can purchase the album You're the Voice: Songs for the Ordinary by an Anthemaniac via my website - www.geraldinequinn.com. Photo of Jenny Wynter by previous podcast guest Alexis Dubus. So incestuous, we are...
Matt Forde and Marcel Lucont are on hand to help and/or hinder the assembly of a load of Flatpack Furniture. Also... Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin live on through our panellists mouths, we get all sexy as the panel re-enact some booty calls and then cool down again just in time to help an audience member with an infestation of pimps. Do evangelise about Flatshare Slamdown to anyone and everyone you meet - coming out on the first day of every month throughout 2016. Thanks! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Before UK comedian Alexis Dubus caused an international stir with a measured, and initially private, Facebook post about the Adelaide Fringe glut, I was chasing the sparkly-eyed UK dynamo for a podcast chat. How fortunate, for it makes me look incredibly relevant. This cabaret podcast, we chat about the fall-out from his post, the perils of independent arts, strange encounters in Perth, passionate people with odd but grand ideas, and how to argue with a guy who has a rabbit on his knob. Alexis Dubus (aka Marcel Lucont) is an award-winning UK performer who has been traipsing the Australian and UK Fringe circuits for almost a decade, which means we would run into each other maybe twice a year (back when I did Edinburgh Fringe more often...I know, I'm sorry guys, I've not been over for way too long...). He's a very fine wordsmith, a very funny performer, a resourceful artist, a great photographer, and a mischievous imp, as you will hear. If you, like us, love odd corners of the world and people who have a dream, visit the Bang On The Strillers website for links to the National Pioneer Women Hall of Fame and Atelier Sul Mare in Sicily, and the KGB Museum in Prague. Lots of loving name-checks this episode because we are frayed long-term Fringe-performers who know everyone, including Nicko Vaughan, Briefs, Harley Breen, Sam Simmons, Tommy Bradson (and how much we love him), David Quirk (and how much we love HIM), Lori Bell, Brendon Burns, Jon Bennett, Mitch Benn and my Episode #2 guest Becky Lou. We love all these guys, incidentally, we just carried on a bit more about Dave and Tommy. Do listen. AT ONCE.

vive la difference! The indie cops allez a France for their most shambolic episode yet - which leaves Terry grumpy, Tom a little narked and special guest star Alexis Dubus slightly baffled (entirely in French)
