British runner Aly Dixon first joined her local running club when she was 11 years old. It took time and patience for the proud Mackem (Sunderland) to get her first England vest at 29 and it was another two years before her first GB vest at 31. Her confidence hit rock bottom and she threw her trainers in the bin after the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. And it was her friend Paula Radcliffe who helped her to rekindle her love for running. Aly went on to fulfil a childhood dream of competing at the Rio Olympics, she finished 6th at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and became World Champion over 50km in 2019. Aly retired from international competition in 2021 but is just as passionate about running. You'll hear: 09:10 Tan lines of runners v triathletes 10:00 "I do plan on doing a triathlon at some point. The next challenge is now a triathlon and I do have a crazy ideas that I want to do an Ironman but I think about it for 20 seconds. It's about being realistic and setting myself targets. I have to remind myself I'm still doing well as a 43 year old even though identify as a 27 year old. But I know I can't expect too much of myself. I keep on telling myself not to put any pressure on myself, as I'm only training 1/3 of what I used to. I can't compare 2022 Aly to 2017 Aly but you're always going to look back to what you have achieved and if I keep doing that, it will take away the love of it. 27:25 Loving running. 'I just love the feeling of running, so as long as I can do it, I'll do it. 29:10 My work colleagues think I'm mad for doing things at lunch time. But it's an addiction. But what are you going to replace it with? Beer and become obese? 30:10 Aly on Rio 2016 'It still doesn't feel real. I think I was 37 at the Olympics and I knew it was unusual, but I never felt like I was doing it for anyone else. Growing up, I put Olympians as demi-Gods who were not ordinary people. I don't love it for the medals, i love it for everything else. "One bad run doesn't make you a bad runner." 45:40 Talent Vs hard work. 'My talent is that I can work hard. Running 120, 130 miles at times. It's ingrained from my dad, I watched him and he was a workhorse. I have phsyios who look at me who say 'how do you do it?' But I look back now and I know I did too much mileage. “Things can go off the rails quick. So as much as you want to be confident and feel like it’s gonna be easy, that’s not how this works.” Des Linden, Olympian and 2018 Boston Marathon champion, is officially an ultramarathoner. And not just an ultramarathoner: a record-setting ultramarathoner. Last week, Des made her ultra debut, racing a 50K in Oregon, and breaking a world record in the process. She finished in 2:59:54, beating the previous world record (held by Aly Dixon) by more than seven minutes, averaging a 5:47 per mile pace, and becoming the first woman to ever run a 50K in less than three hours. On this episode, Des recaps the race and talks about what it was like running in unknown-to-her territory. She shares what it takes to annoy her on the run, tells all about “The Shoey” tradition, and talks about what’s most intriguing to her right now. Breaststroke specialist Roderick Sewell Jackson has faced challenges his entire life. Born without tibia bones, his mother decided to have his legs amputated at age 1. Running in the first ultra-distance event of her career, Linden shattered the previous record of 3:07:20 that Great Britain’s Aly Dixon set in 2019 at the 50K world championships in Romania. After getting ahead of Dixon’s record pace right from the start, she never looked back, and Linden’s final time worked out to an average pace of 3:36 per kilometre. In Galveston Texas, not only did the Colorado pros make a big impact, but one well known age grouper, Betsy Mercer raced in redemption of her 2019 attempt in Galveston where she was stopped 100 yards from the finish line because of weather. At Cherry Creek State Park, The Barking Dog Duathlon kicked off the multi-sport season with about 150 athletes racing. Betsy finished fourth in her age group but cried at the finish line, not because she finished, but because her friend Michael Jones finished his first 70.3. Said Betsy, “I didn’t cry this time when I crossed the finish line, I cried when Michael did. That’s the beauty of triathlon, the community you’re a part of.” Ride or Die, a Women’s Cycling Movement Matt Miller, owner of BASE Performance invited me to ride last Saturday, not an uncommon invitation as we have ridden many times. I had sort of decided to do a different ride in Denver. Of course I was intrigued. As it turned out the groups left at different times and when the BASE team left the other group hadn’t arrived. Three hours later upon my return, the parking lot at BASE headquarters was filled with women cyclists all buzzing from a ride. Some were friends of mine who I had no idea would be there. There was a cooler of drinks and prizes and swag and I felt a fun energy. I asked my friend Becky Furuta, no stranger to the peloton from the highest levels about what I was seeing. I know they had ridden some gravel, and some road. I saw bikes of all sorts. I didn’t know anything about this group. Becky described it as, “grassroots racing and riding, the goal is fun and camaraderie without all the staunchness and elitism that’s driving people away from the road. There’s a sense of community and fun absent the usual rivalries. I think that’s really the point of these beginner/community rides – not that they’re easy or for beginners, but that they’re accessible at every level and focused on mixing training with fun and a social component. Entering today's Brooks Running 50K and Marathon in rural Oregon, American Des Linden — and just about everyone else — expected herself to break the 50K world best of 3:07:20 set by Great Britain's Aly Dixon in 2019. Besting the mark would require Linden to average just under 6:02 per mile — or 2:38:05 for a marathon plus another five miles — well within the capabilities of Linden, a 2:22:38 marathoner (Dixon's best in 17 marathons is 2:29:06). Less certain: whether Linden would become the first woman under 3:00. Linden, the 2018 Boston Marathon champ who came two seconds shy of winning the Boston in 2011 and 11 seconds short of making her third Olympic team at the US Olympic Trials in 2020, knows the feeling of just missing a major milestone. Aly Dixon is an English long-distance runner who currently holds the 50km world record and won the 2019 50km World Championship in Brasov, Romania. She has also won the British marathon championships two times. Aly is also a proud ambassador for St Benedict's hospice in Sunderland, a charity which specialises in end of life care for cancer patients, which is close to her heart after losing family members to the illness.
