Our guest for this episode is Dennis Erokan, father of actress D’Arcy Carden, best known for her Emmy nominated role as Janet on the smash-hit television series, The Good Place – one of my favorite sitcoms. In addition to The Good Place, D’Arcy has appeared in many other TV shows and movies, including: Broad City, Bonding, Other People, and the HBO series Barry. She will also be co-starring in the upcoming comedy series “A League of Their Own” which is based on the 1992 classic film of the same name and will be available on Amazon. D’Arcy and her three siblings – Miranda, Laney, and Will – are fortunate to have Dennis as their father. Dennis is an incredible guy. He was the founder of several magazines, including the Bay Area Music magazine (aka BAM), and he is a dedicated family man and father. In this episode, Dennis and I cover a lot of ground, including: how to instill confidence in your children, how to talk to them when they fall short of reaching their goals, considerations for raising children who are interested in acting, and the importance of stretching the spaghetti. Nominees Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) and D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place) stop by while Editor-in-Chief Patrick Gomez, Managing Editor Erik Adams, and TV Editor Danette Chavez discuss the unconventional nature of the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards, which will happen remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Today, we're introducing Push The Envelope, a new podcast where The A.V. Club editors and celebrity guests come together to discuss the Emmys, Oscars, Grammys, Globes, and more. From dream nominations to current snubs and surprises to favorite moments from past ceremonies—if someone’s passing out trophies, we’re talking about it.. Future episodes will cover everything from the VMAs and Tonys to the latest critical darlings of all forms of entertainment, but Push The Envelope kicks off with four episodes focused on the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards. Every Friday leading up to the Sept. 20 ceremony, TV editor Danette Chavez and managing Editor Erik Adams will join editor-in-chief Patrick Gomez in analyzing the nominations and predicting what we can expect from the upcoming at-home telecast. Push The Envelope will also feature interviews with some of the folks you’ll see in that telecast; in our first episode, you’ll hear from The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden and Schitt’s Creek’s Catherine O’Hara. The three episodes that follow will focus on the limited series and movie, drama, and comedy categories, and feature conversations with Uzo Aduba (Mrs. America), Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. The Reverend), Nicholas Braun (Succession), some of the Watchmen creative team, and more. And if the TV isn’t your thing for some reason, don’t fret—this podcast is a year-round effort and we’ll be moving on to discuss other topics posthaste, with more celebrity guests and members of the A.V. Club staff joining the conversation. Real-life earth angel D’Arcy Carden is on today’s segment Dying To Talk to you! She’s best known for roles like Janet on NBC’s The Good Place and Natalie on HBO’s dark comedy Barry. Be prepared to fall madly in love with her on this week's episode as she discusses her family life, her disappointment in gardening, and all things The Good Place. Listen now to get yourself out of The Bad Place and don’t forget to keep it sleazy!
D’Arcy Carden is proof that breaking through in the biz usually requires years of studying the craft of acting, practicing resilience amid rejection, and getting by with survival gigs. After graduating from Southern Oregon University and moving to New York City, D’Arcy was “equal parts delusional and also confident,” she says. She knew the odds of making it as a professional actor and held onto the dream anyway. She is now best known as Janet, the cheerful virtual assistant of the afterlife, on four seasons of Mike Schur’s beloved NBC comedy “The Good Place.” Around the same time she was enduring countless auditions for that job, she was cast on HBO’s award-winning Bill Hader hit “Barry.” D’Arcy also appeared on “Broad City,” “Other People,” and shorts and other comedy projects with the Upright Citizens Brigade. American actress and comedian D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place, Barry, Broad City) and Andrea take exciting first steps to becoming real-life adult friends by meeting out of industry formalwear and in a decrepit Valley landmark. Andrea makes a strong first move by treating D’Arcy to a photo of her dog’s penis before they dive into D’Arcy’s early credits, discuss the pros and cons of only referring to yourself in the third person during sex, and talk about how adulthood measures up to childhood expectations. Later, Andrea tries to replicate her friend-making success with Tony and… it’s a work in progress.

On our entertainment-themed Round 2 this week, we keep busy with three episodes of TV and two accompanying podcasts. On Dancing with the Stars, the annoyingly dragged-out elimination was even more annoying because it was 100% unnecessary, as Ray Lewis withdrew due to injury. But in the meantime, don't sleep on Kate Flannery. You go, girl! The Good Place premiered ("A Girl From Arizona") with a little too much angst and worry for our heroes, although we very much enjoy the show's podcast [https://www.nbc.com/the-good-place/exclusives/tgp-podcast], hosted by Marc Evan Jackson and featuring this week actors D'Arcy Carden and Kirby Howell-Baptiste and writer Andrew Law.On The West Wing, it was a Leo-centric episode that is unfortunately one of John Spencer's last ("Running Mates"). The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden (Janet), Kirby Howell-Baptiste(Simone) and writer Andrew Law shoot the shirt with host Marc Evan Jackson (Shawn). In this Season 4 premiere episode, they talk about how the writers’ room approached breaking the story for the final season, the calming presence of director Drew Goddard and Kristen Bell’s nuanced performance as Eleanor playing the architect. They also discuss the incredible performances of the actors playing the new humans in the neighborhood, D’Arcy’s impressive range as a stressed-out Janet, the many jokes that hit the cutting room floor and many more behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes. Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world, and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week we take you to The Good Place and a warm conversation about all the people that make up your own personal hell. To help us along we bring you exclusive roundtable interviews from San Diego Comic-Con 2019 with the talent and creatives behind The Good Place to help kick off their final season 4 premier Sept 26th. Our guests include all-star cast members Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D’Arcy Carden, Manny Jacinto, Marc Evan Jackson, producer extraordinaire Drew Goddard and creator Michael Schur. But what makes The Good Place so good is its existential and ethical dilemmas, which haunt all of us every day against the indifferent hideously beautiful backdrop of the unknown, ya know? Like, who do I think I am? Am I good or bad? If my actions have consequences should I be allowed the freedom of choice? What is the point? If the universe demonstrates only existence without meaning, can I ascribe my own meaning to it? If you think this sounds way too forking cerebral to be a primetime network hit show, you would be wrong; it's a wickedly creative, unique and funny ash show. But take notes anyway, the whole series might end with a quiz deciding half of your Philosophy 220 grade. Join Grim Shea, Marke., and our Bleeding Cool buddy Jimmy The Gent as we talk about the biggest sitcom in the country and 20th century French philosophers and a little Star Trek and some other deep-ash shirt.
