Late release this week but better late then never! We start off talking about Mike Wardian completing his Appalachian Trail through run in 60 days. He had to battle the aftermath of hurricane Helene in order to get it done. We discuss the devastation of the hurricane and also the Yeti folks who pitched in and helped the people of Damascus after the Yeti 100 was cancelled. Then we look into the 153 mile Spartathlon road race in Greece. Camille Herron was back to defend her course record from last year but she had a lot going on with the wiki controversy. She DNF'd and we haven't heard much about why but I can imagine she was mentally distracted. We go over race results from The Bear 100, Dick Collins Firetrails, Flagstaff Sky Peaks, Mt. Taylor 50K, West Line Winder 50K, and Heritage 50K. Meredith Hughes set a new women's self-supported FKT on the Colorado trail west to east collegiate west. Courtney Dauwalter is racing in France this weekend and will be going for the outright win at Nice Cote d'Azure 115K which is no longer a Western States golden ticket race. Early release this week as Farley has an out of town race coming up this weekend.  We start off today with results from Tor Des Geants, a beast of a race in Italy.  Then we discuss Run Rabbit Run which was the 100 mile main event of the weekend in the U.S.  We also talk about RUT 50K, a sky race in Big Sky, Montana.  Then we talk about Remi Bonnet setting the Mt. Tam Hill Climb FKT right here in the Bay Area (Mill Valley).  That FKT has been held by Jim Walmsley since 2017.  Remi was in town for the Headlands 27K which is part of the Golden Trail World Series.  We go over the results and speedy dual at the finish of the Headlands 27K.  We also dive into this crazy unsupported 100 mile race that takes place in Plain, Washington.  In addition, we look at an article from Run247 that describes some of the training that Jasmin Paris did leading up to her Barkley finish earlier this year.  Finally, we give a status update for Tara Dower and Mike Wardian who are still out there kicking ass on the Appalachian Trail.  All eyes are on Tara as she is closing in on the last few hundred miles with the overall FKT in sight.  Go Tara!! Welcome to Episode 53 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast! I am so excited to have Mike Wardian back on the show to chat about his transcon run, which he completed this past July.I did an Athlete Nutrition Profile on Mike in April 2020, right after he won the Quarantine Backyard Ultra with 262 miles in 63 hours. If you would like to learn more about Mike's nutrition story as a plant-based athlete (he eats eggs and honey, but otherwise follows a vegan diet), check out Episode 26.  Mike always is a joy to talk to, so full of passion and positivity, and of course he is an unbelievable athlete too. He wears so many hats it's hard to keep track of it all - he is a professional runner, mostly focusing on ultra endurance events but you can find him doing pretty much every distance, and he also does CrossFit, plays pickle ball, cycles, rows, keeps a beehive (or at least tries!), and goes after all kinds of fun, random world records, all while working and spending time with his wife and two teenage sons. He only sleeps four hours a night, but it's still mind-boggling how he is able to accomplish everything that he does! If you're not familiar with his Running Home project, Mike ran 3,234 miles over 61 days, from May 1st to July 1st, across 13 states, from San Francisco City Hall to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, while raising over 100,000 dollars for World Vision's global clean water initiatives. I wanted to dig into all the details of how he fueled himself across the country, and of course, discuss some of the fun and crazy things that happened along the way.Thank you Mike for spending time with me on the podcast once again, and for continuing to inspire us all with your running accomplishments as well as your wonderful attitude towards life. Also - the audio was a bit choppy for some reason at certain points in the show. In episode 114, I spoke with elite runner Mike Wardian. Mike Wardian is quite simply one of the world's best ultra runners. He loves to compete, run and see what his best looks like. I would list all his achievements and races but I'll leave it here, Mike has competed in nearly 300 marathons and over 100 ultramarathons all over the world. Mike has competed in the US Olympic Trials three times (2004, 2008, and 2012), has won the 50k and 100k US National Championships, and is a four-time USA Track & Field Ultra Runner of the Year. In 2019, he ran 20 marathons, including setting a world record for running 10 marathons in 10 days on seven continents, and running across the entire country of Israel in 10 days, setting a new FKT for the Israel National Trail. We spoke about some of the things you'd expect, but we also spoke about how poker chess and beekeeping relate to running and developing an adaptable mindset. Plus we spoke about so much more that he hasn't covered in other conversations. Mike Wardian is quite simply one of the world's best ultra runners. Name an event and the chances are Mike's done it. He's competed all over the globe, raced at the US Olympic Trials, and holds numerous world records.Mike grew up in Virginia, graduating from Oakton High School, where he took part in and won his first ever race – a Turkey Trot with a free school lunch up for grabs. However, Mike's running story isn't one of love at first sight. He played lacrosse as a kid and only started running (“to keep fit”) in his junior year at Michigan State University, and didn't run competitively until after college. It all began in 1996, when Mike heard that his friend's Mum was running the Boston Marathon. He thought it sounded like fun, so trained for the Marine Corps Marathon and qualified for Boston by running a 3:06. He competed in his first Boston Marathon a year later in 1997 (he's since ran it 19 more times!) and was completely hooked from that moment onwards.Since then, Mike has competed in nearly 300 marathons and over 100 ultramarathons all over the world. Indeed, racing as much as humanly possible has become somewhat of a trademark for Mike. In 2019 alone, he ran 20 marathons, including setting a world record for running 10 marathons in 10 days on seven continents, and running across the entire country of Israel in 10 days, setting a new FKT for the Israel National Trail.Mike has competed in the US Olympic Trials three times (2004, 2008, and 2012), has won the 50k and 100k US National Championships, and is a four-time USA Track & Field Ultra Runner of the Year.Perhaps most unbelievably, Mike manages to do all of this whilst holding down a full-time job as an international ship broker (rumour has it he hasn't slept since 1996). We are so excited to have Michael Wardian back in the house today; we first sat down with Mike in 2016 for episode 25, where we talked about relentlessly pursuing passion and pushing the limits of what has been made possible.   Mike is an international shipbroker, speaker, coach, business owner, dad to two boys and two vizslas, Rosie and Bash, and of course, a very well-known ultra runner, which almost feels too blah of a descriptive for this guy.  His resume on UltraSignUp dates back to 1998. Anyone who knows of Mike never seems to be surprised at his FKT attempts, robust race schedule, or solo adventures like his Guinness book world record attempt for the fastest known time for a marathon in a highland dress.  Still, I have to say, his win at last year's Quarantine Backyard Ultra was one of the most epic challenges I've witnessed, thanks to social media. It was a virtual race that started with over 2,400 runners from more than 50 countries. It ended over 60 hours later with only two runners left, Mike and Radek Brunner, who missed the start of the 63rd lap, making Mike the winner after 422 kilometers of running.  As I said, the resume is massive, and we're super pumped for you to listen in and hear what he is relentlessly brewing up for the future.  In this episode, we discuss: - winning the quarantine backyard in 2020 - FKT for the run across America - coming back from injury - injury as an opportunity  - grow incrementally and stay consistent - do weird things that you wouldn't normally do - limiting yourself because you don't want to learn something - mental game crossover of ultra running and chess - perspective on engineered nutrition for racing - pickleball training for a high altitude ultra - unique challenges of a graduate-level 100-miler - running on the moon Thank you so much for being so supportive of the show; if it has made a positive impact, please consider pledging on Patreon, where you will be assisting us in keeping the YogiTriathlete and Awake Athlete podcasts commercial-free. Any amount helps and is greatly appreciated. Namaste- Jess

“I've been like frozen at Barkley's Marathon in a space blanket, wrapped in a coat, in a cave and still like hypothermic” - Mike Wardian Impressive doesn't even begin to define my guest today, the man, the myth, the absolute legend, Mike Wardian. A professional runner who not only won the infamous 2020 Quarantine Backyard Ultra but who also has the world record for running a marathon in both a Spiderman costume and dressed as Elvis. All while being a husband and father, owning his own ship brokering business, and being a bee-keeper because why the hell not, right!? Mike and I recently met on a little adventure in and around Zion National Park when I spontaneously became a rolling aid station as he ran the Zion Traverse along with his brother, sister, and my just as equally impressive girlfriend. We talk about how he got his start in athletics through Lacrosse, Mike went on to play at Michigan State before taking a break his senior year and discovering the world of competitive running. Then we dive into some of the other incredible adventures he's had as a runner, like running across Israel or doing 7 marathons, on 7 continents, in 7 days, and setting yet another Guinness world record for running a marathon in a Scottish kilt. Mike's well known for his “relentless” mentality and pursuit of whatever it is he has his sights set on and I think that's a well deserved reputation. You don't meet many people like him who have such a laser focus on a goal but who also don't let the results be the definition of success in pursuing it. This is one of the conversations that I'm absolutely thrilled to put out and can't wait to have him back on the show, hopefully after his upcoming race here in Colorado at the Hardrock 100. Welcome to Episode 26 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring elite ultrarunner and (mostly) vegan athlete, Mike Wardian. If you haven't heard of Mike, he's a beast of an athlete and also one of the nicest, down-to-earth guys you'll meet in the running world (and elsewhere). The number of back-to-back races, Fastest Known Times (FKTs), and other events that he participates in - and conquers - seemingly every week is superhuman. Most athletes would take a bit of a break after running (let alone winning) a major event - but not Mike! He's always hungry for more, and it's truly inspiring to watch. Mike follows a mostly vegan diet (he eats eggs and honey), and I was so excited to get him on the show to hear more about how he fuels his amazing and diverse athletic accomplishments. We recorded on April 14th, about a week after he won the Quarantine Backyard ultra. If you're not familiar with this event, it's a last-person standing race (in this case, a virtual competition with runners around the world), and Mike won it running 262 miles in 63 hours around his neighborhood, just shy of the world record!! Mike races pretty much every distance out there on both road and trail, and has made the podium for many half-marathons, marathons, 50k, 100k and 100 mile races. He has set a number of world records, including the fastest time for 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days, fastest marathon as Spider-man and Elvis, fastest time for the Abbott World Marathon Majors, fastest 50k on a treadmill (he is attempting this one again in early June), and fastest marathon pushing a jogging stroller. He also has set many FKTs around the world, including the Israeli National Trail in 2019. All in-person events have been cancelled, but that hasn't stopped Mike - he's been setting FKT after FKT on the trails near where he is based in Arlington, VA, and hopes to run across America later this year. But what's even more impressive is that he does ALL of this while working a full time job and with two kids. As you can imagine, he's not getting all that much sleep, but somehow he is able to put in all those training hours and perform at an incredibly high level. I hope you enjoy my chat with Mike - I certainly felt inspired after our interview, and love following along his adventures on social media, especially these past few months of quarantine. Hope you are all continuing to stay safe and healthy!
