In this episode, Andi Marquette and Lise MacTague discuss the first episode of Disney Plus' new series National Treasure: Edge of History, based on the movies but starring a different cast with interesting takes on the characters and some of the issues they're dealing with. Like the movies, this is a quest-themed movie that Andi likens to watching a quest game. Puzzle-solving, conspiracy theories, clues—episode 1 ticks all these boxes. Andi and Lise will let you know whether this is a One and Done or One and Fun!  Trailer for NT: Edge of History HERE. Available on Disney Plus.  Shout outs: Lise is very excited to be reading the second in K.B. Wagers' NeoG series—space opera meets sports drama! Book 2 is Hold Fast Through the Fire. Andi shouted out Book 1 in that series, A Pale Light in the Black. Andi also shouted out the first in John Sandford's latest thriller series starring badass/kickass Letty Davenport, The Investigator.  Find LGO and episodes at lezgeekoutcast.com as well as lots of other platforms. Romance, Representation, and Publishing  Andi and Lise discuss what's known as the lesbian fiction publishing industry (as distinguished from “mainstream” publishers that publish LGBTQ+ fiction) and the role of books that feature romance as a main plot in the industry. They unpack the scarcity of genre fiction in lesbian fiction that isn't romance-driven (but may include romance as a subplot) and discuss the pros and cons of being defined by a particular genre. They're excited to see more books that include asexual, trans, and non-binary characters in romance, but they'd like to see more characters like that in genre fiction that may or may not have a romantic sub-plot.  Links of interest:  About Naiad Press  Obituary/bio of Barbara Grier, one of the founders of Naiad  Lise MacTague's list of publications  Andi Marquette's list of publications  A small list of lesbian fiction publishing houses: Bold Strokes Books, Bella Books, Bedazzled Ink Publishing, Bywater Books, Dirt Road Books, Flashpoint Publications, Launch Point Press, Sapphire Books Publishing, Ylva Publishing  Shout-outs: Lise got an electric bike for her birthday, and she's super-stoked about how it makes riding uphill so much easier! Highly recommend! Andi just finished the first in Tasha Suri's Burning Kingdoms series, The Jasmine Throne, which features two female protagonists thrown together in extremely difficult circumstances. Gorgeously written, political intrigue, excellent world-building, and F/F rep.

Hi there!    First off, I just wanted to say that I started listening to your podcast a couple of weeks ago and it’s now one of my favourites! I have so many books to add to my TBR pile.   I teach grade nine English, and every day I read out loud to my class from a YA novel. We do a little work with the novel, but I am trying to get them to associate reading with enjoyment for the most part since they generally don’t read on their own.    Right now we are reading Scythe by Neal Shusterman and they are loving it so far! Every time I stop reading they want me to continue (possibly because they want to get out of doing work but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt). I think they like it because it has a little bit of a darker premise and of course it has some good twists and turns.    Do you have any YA recommendations for novels that are similar to Scythe but would be good to read out loud to a wide range of reading abilities? I’m looking for something that is action packed and also a little thought provoking. Dystopias are popular with them but it’s not a deal breaker if you don’t recommend any; it’s good to expand their horizons once in a while. A little romance is okay, but nothing too over the top.   Thanks for your help! -Molly  2. I love reading but as the holidays approach I find myself with less and less time so I’m always getting my library books returned to the library half-finished.   Do you have any recommendations for novellas for a quick and satisfying read. I like sci-fi/fantasy, horror, thrillers, mystery and historical. No romance please. Bonus if it’s a woman writer.   Thanks, -Jayme 3. Hi! I’m looking for a book where you cheer for the villain. I’m NOT looking for a book about hitler or trump. Something kind of silly and fun. When you were watching the roadrunner and coyote, sometimes you wanted the coyote’s plan to work. Or the mad scientist in any cartoon ..sometimes you just want him to have a good day and take over the world. Please no graphic novels or comic books. I want a good novel to get lost in. I’m attaching my goodreads link -Jessica 4. My 12 year old son has recently become very interested in WWII. I’m hoping for middle-grade or slightly above books that discuss the history and also the history of those who lived through it. He is more interested in nonfiction, but he would also likely appreciate a fiction that still explains the history. -Monica 5. I read a pretty eclectic selection and even in non-pandemic years I go through a couple books a week.  Right now I’m looking for total escapism and not anything even close to reality.  I’ve been diving in deeper to different categories that I like, but what I’m really looking for right now are sci-fi/fantasy heist stories.  I loved the Rogues of the Republic series by Patrick Weekes, but I’m having trouble finding anything comparable.  Any suggestions. -Becky 6. Hello! I visited Rome and Sicily (where my mom was born) last year and fell in love with the deep history of Italy. Since we can’t go there right now due to COVID, I have been reading a lot about the history of Italy – specifically Rome and Siicily. But all I have been able to find are non-fiction books which are fine. But, historical fiction is my jam! Do you have any recommendations for historical fiction that take place in Italy? I read a lot about WW2 so preferably before 1900.  -Renee 7. So as I’m sitting here watching the first presidential debate, there’s a part of me that just wants to forget about American politics for awhile and maybe learn about someone else’s. I feel like I’m so hyper-focused on the political topography here in America, but I have no idea how other countries’ governments work. I’m curious if you guys have any recommendations for books that could help me understand the politics and government of other countries, particularly ones that are known for being very stable. Some countries I would be interested in learning about off the top of my head are Switzerland, Denmark and New Zealand, but open to learning about any country. Thanks! -an exhausted american Books Discussed Want by Cindy Pon Warcross by Marie Lu (tw: harm to children) Two Old Women by Velma Wallis The Tea Master and the Detective by Aliette De Bodard (tw: PTSD, harm to women and children) Renegades by Marissa Meyer Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots (tw: graphic violence) Paper Wishes by Lois Sepahban When My Name Was Keoko by Linda Sue Park Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett (tw: slavery) The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi (tw: depiction of violent anti-Semitism; racism; child-abuse) The Vatican Princess by CW Gortner Juliet by Ann Fortier (rec’d by Jess Pryde) How to Be Danish by Patrick Kingsley Incarceration Nations by Baz Dreisinger See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jove also brought up Laundry Love, which helps low-income and no-income people and families wash clothes and bedding by partnering with groups, schools, and local Laundromats. And she brought up Socks for Soldiers, in which people actually knit a pair of socks for an active-duty soldier. If you can’t knit, there are other ways to help.   And Jove would like everyone to know (because Andi doesn’t like to talk too much about accomplishments…lol)  that Andi’s holiday reboot of Dickens’ Christmas Carol, The Bureau of Holiday Affairs, was one of six LGBTQ+ holiday books included in a write-up in the “Happy Ever After” section of USA Today, under “Rainbow Trends.” Go see.   ALSO! Dirt Road Books is releasing the anthology Learning Curve. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Australian organization One Girl, which helps provide education for girls in Africa. They would also like to remind folks that just because you’re of the lady species, it doesn’t mean you can’t fix your own bike. And who doesn’t like a headless horseman story for Halloween? Women and Words  Overview  1-14 July 2017  OMG Andi and Jove were outta control at GCLS last week and we just could not get it together to try to do things with y’all. SORRY! But here we are, with a 2-week roundup. Jove has pretty much gone feral (it happens sometimes) and Andi is pretty sure that GCLS wears everybody out, but omg it is way fun.   1 July: Women and Wordster and reader-in-residence Erin Saluta came by and omg she went on the Olivia cruise to Alaska that Sapphire Books was doing! Here she talks about some lesfic books that deal with that topic. Maybe we can get her to post photos…  Women and Words link HERE  2 July: Author Sandy Stier came by and this is super awesome. She and her wife wrote a book together about California’s Prop 8 battle because they were plaintiffs in the case. This is their story, and they are TOTALLY GIVING AWAY A COPY! You still have time. We’ll do the drawing on the 21st. GET IN ON THIS. HERSTORY!  Women and Words link HERE  An article about them in People Magazine  3 July: Author and Women and Wordster Lynette Mae tried to be a little more light-hearted, but because she’s Lynette Mae, there’s always a subtext that you learn from. She and her wife took their niece to NYC and had a great time. This is a short piece about that.  Women and Words link HERE  6 July: Author and Women and Wordster R.G. Emanuelle talked about being shy and public speaking and how it can be really, really stressful.  Women and Words link HERE  R.G. Emanuelle’s website  10 July: Author Catherine Friend (Goldie winner this year!) popped by via author and Women and Wordster Jessie Chandler to talk a bit about her latest book Spark (Bold Strokes Books) and to offer a GIVEAWAY! You have until the 24th to get in on this! Catherine writes historical fiction/adventure.  Women and Words link HERE  Catherine Friend’s website  Jessie Chandler’s website  11 July: Women and Wordster and life coach/writer’s coach Angela Grace joined us with a frank discussion about how changing your perspective can actually change your brain. Have questions? Feel like you could use a couple of sessions with her? Drop her a line. ☺  Women and Words link HERE  Angela Grace can be found HERE  12 July: UK-based author and Women and Wordster Stevie Carroll was able to finally join us after some technical difficulties and she attended an awesome car show. She posted photos. LOVE.  Women and Words link HERE  Stevie Carroll’s LiveJournal  13 July: Author and Women and Wordster Fiona Zedde got a wild hair and hopped on down to Cuba. She posted the photos to prove it. ☺ PLUS! She has a new book coming out with Ylva! Superhero book!  Women and Words link HERE  Fiona Zedde’s website  14 July: Author and Women and Wordster (and obsessive fangirl) Andi Marquette blogged about season 2 episode 5 of Wynonna Earp because it is a game-changer in terms of women’s rep. FOR REALS. Also, Andi is doing season 2 recaps of Wynonna Earp episodes at her homesite.  Women and Words link HERE  Andi Marquette’s website  Andi fangirls over on Tumblr  Andi and Jove then did a rambling round-up of what they did at GCLS.

Women and Words  Podcast overview 16-21 April 2017   Jove demonstrates her knowledge of fine art while Andi wonders when medical science will be able to replace eyeballs like in that movie Minority Report with Tom Cruise. Andi also wonders if there’s a trivia game show out there that specializes in 1970s and 80s TV because R.G. Emanuelle would for sure win.   16 April: Author Lise Gold joined us to discuss her novel Lily’s Fire and the concept of “wonderment.” And Jove wanted me to include the link to Picasso’s “Blue Nude,” which you will totally understand why when you listen to the podcast. LOL   Women and Words link HERE  Lise Gold’s website    17 April: Author and Women and Wordster Stevie Carroll joined us with another chat about her exploits across the pond. This time, she attended a seminar about automobile history and heard a great talk about women, cars, and social history. For those not in the know, Stevie owns and drives a vintage Porsche…   Women and Words link HERE  Stevie Carroll’s LiveJournal    18 April: Author and Women and Wordster Ashley Bartlett has a fascination with the number 6, and her blog will demonstrate why.   Women and Words link HERE  Find Ashley Bartlett HERE    19 April: Author and Women and Wordster Jove Belle is up to stuff! She checked in to let us know what.  Women and Words link HERE  Jove Belle’s website    20 April: Author and Women and Wordster R.G. Emanuelle would like to have a little downtime to watch some of the cool TV shows she hears the rest of us yammering on about. Fun fact about R.G.: she’s a walking encyclopedia of TV trivia for shows in the 70s and 80s. She’d probably do okay with shows in the 60s and 90s, too. And she’s seen probably every B-horror movie out there.   Women and Words link HERE  R.G. Emanuelle’s website    21 April: Fangirl Friday with Women and Wordster and author Andi Marquette. This week, she is all about SyFy’s Dark Matter.   Women and Words link HERE  Andi Marquette’s website  Andi fangirls on Tumblr    Don’t forget! The GCLS is coming up! Go check out the website to see what it’s all about and get conference details as well as the lists of finalists for the Goldie awards.  And check the Women and Words calls for submissions page to see if there’s anything coming up to get in on! Andi also thinks that hair stylists have the best stories (and you probably shouldn’t piss them off because scissors and, in TL Hart’s case, knives). 9 April: Author Shae Connor joined us to chat about her novella Graphite and Glitter. Andi Marquette and Lise MacTague both decided to inaugurate the first episode of this podcast with the movie D.E.B.S. because AWESOME. And it happens to be a fave of both of them, so they each watched it for probably the 30th time and fangirled over it. D.E.B.S. (2004) is a campy, fun, spoofy romp in which 4 young women (Max, Amy, Dominque, and Janet) are recruited into spy school via a college entrance exam. Things get crazy when archvillain Lucy Diamond is discovered to be back in town, and she’s got a meeting with a Russian assassin. What could she be up to? The D.E.B.S. are on the case, but one of them didn’t count on developing an attraction for Lucy… Also, this podcast has spoilers of the movie. Watch the trailer HERE. Synopsis: Sultry crime boss Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster, The Fast and the Furious) is back in the states and the D.E.B.S.- an elite team of paramilitary college co-ed superspies- are hot on her trail. But when their top agent, gorgeous Amy Bradshaw (Sara Foster, The Big Bounce), mysteriously disappears after coming face to face with the attractive young villainess, the D.E.B.S. begin a full-scale search for Lucy's secret lair, never suspecting that Amy may not want to be rescued after all, in this smart and sexy spy spoof about love at first gun sight.
