In Part 2 of this series, Miyanovich discusses: the pernicious beginnings of LGO, the real challenges of providing LGO DevGru trainings, the loss of Bitting, the loss of Bev, the loss of Brandon, the upside-down mass of middle-aged male lib-gunners, "never again": the lesson of Brandon's Box...and Miyanovich's challenge to trade your jabroni relationship with guns with something more evolved.
Do you ever feel like you're chasing success, but once you get “there,” the finish line moves again? If you're nodding along, then this episode is for you. This week, we're getting deep, real, and hilarious with bestselling author and keynote speaker Laura Gassner Otting (LGO)—a woman who has done it all, from working in the White House to writing books that change lives. But here's the twist: even she has struggled with self-worth, impostor syndrome, and figuring out what success actually means. What if success isn't about more money, more titles, or even more standing ovations? What if success is about feeling aligned with your values and choices—no matter what anyone else thinks? That's the conversation we're diving into today. It's a mix of wisdom, humor, and real talk (plus a detour into drag queens, rage rooms, and why Malala might just be the best at avoiding awkward small talk).Topics We're Breaking DownSuccess: Who Defines It? – Laura turns the traditional definition of success on its head. Spoiler alert: It's not about a corner office, a million-dollar paycheck, or someone else's approval. Why We Suck at Receiving Compliments – Laura's personal struggle with praise, her therapist's game-changing advice, and how you can actually accept a compliment without feeling weird. The Different Versions of Ourselves – Ever feel like you have a work-self, a home-self, and a totally different karaoke-self? Laura shares how she balances “LGO the speaker” with just being Laura, the introvert who loves bad reality TV.Success Does Not Equal Happiness – If money and power automatically made people happy, billionaires wouldn't get divorced and celebrities wouldn't have meltdowns. We get real about why external success is often a trap. The Everest Analogy – What climbing a mountain taught Laura about life, ambition, and why getting to the top isn't actually the goal.
As a child, I believed 100 percent that mermaids roamed the oceans, unicorns thundered through the forests and fairies hid behind trees just a second before we saw them. Thankfully, adulthood never convinced me to leave behind the belief that if I looked at things just so, something magical might happen. Throughout years of transforming and adapting to new workplaces, living spaces, roommates and cultures, two elements intertwined through it all: magic and writing. Writing has always been my way of ruminating on and making sense of everything; magic is what connects me to something deeper and more mysterious. Something that could be scary, or just miraculous. The same number would appear everywhere, and then finally it would be the address of my new apartment. A name would come to me in a dream, and months later that person would be the one who would help me with my never-ending work permit problems in Italy. I would ask the universe for a collaborator and I would find her in a conversation on Instagram. This magical collaborator is Catarina Esteves. As I am, she is a witch, healer and expat who traded her native Portugal for England. If you're a regular listener, you may recognize Catarina's name or voice, as I interviewed her in episode 39 about her journey from the corporate world to teaching yoga and being a witch. If you haven't tuned in already, be prepared to be inspired! This time, I'm joining Catarina for an intimate conversation about our expat experiences. We'll talk about the dreams that prompted us to move abroad, the challenges we faced and the reality checks that shook our foundations. Join us for the last interview of 2024, a window into our respective--and dare I say magical--journeys of transformation.⟢Connect With Sylva:Instagram:@sylva_florence@magicmedicineandmayhemWebsite:Transform with me: https://sylvaflorence.com/Get more Magic: https://magicmedicineandmayhem.com/---⟢ Connect with Catarina:InstagramTikTok⟢ Heal with me:https://bio.site/catarinaesteves.co⟢ Learn more about my witchy community:https://pages.thecoven.community/the-coven-community⟢ Get a FREE month off The Cauldron with the code LGO https://pages.thecoven.community/the-cauldronANNOUNCEMENTS:Join me this December for two online writing experiences designed to help you see life in a fresh, new way. 1. Some of our favorite conversations are with thought leaders from outside veterinary medicine—there's something refreshing about realizing that the challenges we face in vet med aren't always unique to our industry. Laura Gassner Otting, or LGO, is an executive coach and author of two books, Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life (2019), and Wonderhell: Why Success Doesn't Feel Like It Should... and What to Do About It (2023). Both books debuted at #2 on major bestseller lists, and we have a feeling it's not only because LGO has appeared on Good Morning America and TODAY, given TED talks, and served as a presidential appointee in Clinton's White House – she just has a knack for putting tough concepts into terms that resonate. Many of us in vet med spent our whole lives working towards a goal—getting into school, being credentialed, finding that first job. But as a lot of us find out, working hard for years to get somewhere doesn't protect us from burnout, disillusionment, or feeling lost without another star to aim for. In this episode, LGO talks about why success sometimes feels as scary and difficult as it can feel great. Find out more about LGO at lauragassnerotting.com. A Punch in the Face, Wrapped in a Warm Hug (ft. Laura Gassner Otting)Laura Gassner Otting on getting through fear and getting more with lessOPENING QUOTE:“I gave that talk holding on to the lectern. Like if I let go, I would fly into space and die. It was so scary but at the end of it, they handed me a check.”-Laura Gassner OttingGUEST BIO:Laura Gassner Otting, known worldwide as LGO, has been described as a punch in the face wrapped in a warm hug. After selling her extremely successful executive search firm, she entered the speaking industry and promptly blasted off. Applying extreme levels of curiosity, intensity, creative problem solving, and drive, she hit escape velocity in record time and continues to scale fast. She's the bestselling author of two books, and her extensive body of work is helping her deliver meaningful value to audiences around the globe.Links:WebsiteTwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[3:08] - Lessons from Taylor SwiftKeynote speaking advice from an unexpected sourceWe start the episode in an unexpected place — a Taylor Swift concert. Laura shares how impressed she was with the way that Swift left plenty of space for the audience to be part of the show simply by cheering and showing appreciation. She goes on to say that this is something all keynote speakers could apply to their own approach. The more the audience feels like they're having a conversation rather than receiving information, the more engaged they'll be.[5:49] - The First OvationA small tweak to delivery that paid massive dividendsHow did Laura get more out of her speaking career? By giving less. “The first standing ovation I ever got was when I decided to…give 48 minutes of content during a 60-minute keynote.”She goes on to share how allowing moments for the audience to laugh, cry, cheer, and respond turned her speeches into conversations — and that made all the difference. It didn't just lead to her first standing ovation. It also led to major upward momentum in her career as she became an in-demand voice on stages everywhere.[9:10] - Laura's Identity CrisisIt's not all smooth sailing — even for LGOAfter feeling on top of the world having just sold her company amidst huge success, Laura had to face a moment of transformation. Who was she now that she wasn't “LGO, CEO”?Then, a contact encouraged her to get onstage. She gave her first talk ever at TEDx Cambridge in front of 2,600 people — and was terrified the entire time. But she got through it, delivered her message, and discovered something about herself. She had a passion for speaking. That discovery was waiting just on the other side of her terror. What discoveries do we miss because we're afraid?[13:48] - The Creative HackA video reel and a shot of career rocket fuelEarly in the development of her speaking career, Laura had a problem. She needed a video reel, but had only been onstage once. How could she put together a reel of multiple successful performances when she didn't have multiple successful performances.Simple. She rented an auditorium, brought an audio-visual setup, and ran through multiple pitch-perfect lines in multiple outfits. Boom. All of a sudden she had a professional-looking reel with what appeared to be multiple killer performances — even though most of them had come from the same day.The rest is history.[37:19] - From the Today Show to the Top of the Bestseller ListUncommon results require uncommon methodsHow did Laura get a book blurb from a huge name — one she didn't even know — that landed her spots on the Today Show and the bestseller list? Well, she asked. She relentlessly reached out to Amy Cuddy, until finally she had the chance to bug her in person. To her shock, Amy agreed to let Laura write a blurb on her behalf for approval. Laura didn't stop there. She wrote an audacious, intensely positive blurb. And it worked!RESOURCES:[9:35] Laura's Cambridge TEDx Talk[19:45] Limitless by LGO[37:20] About Amy CuddyFollow LGO:WebsiteTwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. Andi and Lise discuss and deeply appreciate multiple award-winning spec fic writer Nicola Griffith's novel Spear (current Nebula finalist!)—a queer Arthurian story that will bring you right into the era from a perspective you didn't know you absolutely needed. If, like them, you grew up on Arthurian/Camelot stories, Spear is like coming home to the people you wanted and needed to see in those tales. Nicola Griffith's website HERE. Info about Spear HERE. Shout-outs: Lise started watching the Netflix series Lockwood and Co., about teen ghosthunters/ghost battlers in a Britain overrun by spirits that can kill with a touch. Adapted from the first two books in the Lockwood and Co. series by Jonathan Stroud. Andi shouts-out the ol' skool show Forensic Files which she's watching on Hulu. The episodes are about 22 minutes long without commercials, and she's ended up learning a lot and making it a family affair. Laura Gassner Otting is an author, catalyst, and executive coach who inspires people to push past the doubt and indecision that keep great ideas in limbo by helping audiences think bigger and accept greater challenges that reach beyond their current, limited scope of belief. LGO, as she is often known, drops by Leadership NOW with Dan Pontefract to discuss her latest book, "Wonderhell: Why Success Doesn't Feel Like It Should . . . and What to Do About It." Laura is the author of Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life (2019), which debuted at #2 on the Washington Post bestseller list, as well as Mission-Driven: Moving from Profit to Purpose (2015). Laura's rebellious and entrepreneurial edge has been well-honed over a 25-year career that started when she dropped out of law school to join an unknown southern governor's presidential campaign, and ended up as a Presidential Appointee in Bill Clinton's White House, where she helped shape AmeriCorps. She left a leadership role as the youngest Vice President at a nationally respected search firm when she realized that her boss's definition of success didn't align with hers and, instead, founded and ran one of the fastest growing search firms in the country, partnering with the full gamut of mission-driven executives, from start-up dreamers to scaling social entrepreneurs to global philanthropists. In 2015, Laura sold that firm to the team who helped her build it. Since that time, Laura has appeared regularly on Good Morning America and the TODAY Show, and her writing has been seen in Harvard Business Review, Forbes, and HR Magazine as she now delivers strategic thinking, well-honed wisdom, and perspective generated by decades of navigating change across the start-up, corporate, nonprofit, political, as well as philanthropic landscapes to organizations across the world. Andi and Lise watched the 1986 film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (the whale movie!) to determine if it holds up after all these years. Here, the Star Trek crew has to save Earth from destruction by an alien probe. To do that, they need…whales. Trust us on this! It's a great plot device! Unfortunately, whales have been extinct for centuries. So the crew devises a way to go back in time to late 20th-century Earth to find whales to save the Earth of the future. Does it hold up? Listen and find out! Also note the tribute to the crew of the space shuttle Challenger at the beginning of the film. Challenger exploded January 28, 1986, killing all seven crew members. Star Trek IV premiered in theaters November 26, 1986. More on the tribute at THIS LINK. Star Trek IV original trailer HERE. Shout-outs: Lise actually has a HALP shout-out—she's working on a project and would like recommendations for cozy mystery series, especially those that include animals. Born in Ukraine, Oleg moved to the United States in 1979 as his family sought the American Dream. Oleg studied biology at York College and upon graduation began working in Pharmaceutical sales, and was a Regional Sales Director for a fortune 100 Pharmaceutical Company for several years. However, deep down, Oleg knew his true passion was and is real estate. He bought his first investment property in 1999 and quickly became captivated with the entire real estate market. He expanded his portfolio from New Jersey to Nevada and then on to Arizona, quickly seeing his return on investments. When Oleg moved out West, he realized he didn't just want to be an investor, he wanted to give other people the same opportunity he has had. He loves working not only with buyers, but sellers and investors as well. Oleg has been in real estate for over ten years as it continues to be his dream career. Notes The Brokery - Oleg Bortman Seg 1 Oleg has a Pharma sales background, what he did for 15 years in New Jersey and then in Nevada. He met his real estate partner Tucker in Phoenix about 2010, and they started a real estate firm called Suits with an office in the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. Since then they've grown over 10+ years with four total offices. Their main office is now on 40th St. They are soon to open an office in Scottsdale, with a goal to open 8 or 9 offices total. They have 60 agents that work at the brokerage, 1099 tax set up who hang their license there. They also have 4 full-time employees. They did a total of $350 million in sales in 2022, residential real estate, with the two partners doing $100 million of that. Phoenix market is very desirable for people to live in. Always good to be working, and living in a community and city that is growing. In the winter months and early spring January through May - Phoenix is very crowded and exciting place. The housing market is seasonal, with the summer being very slow. Snowbirds will make plans to get a rental five or 6 months in advance. Typically these are people from the Midwest where taxes and property taxes are high. East Coast, New York or New Jersey have very high property taxes. If you own a $1.5 million dollar house in New York, your property taxes could be $50,000 a year. If you own a $1.5 million dollar home in Phoenix, your property taxes could be $6 to 12K. Property taxes are five times more expensive on the East Coast. Somebody owning a home on the East Coast, could buy a home in Phoenix at a substantial discount. The Brokery deals in residential sales and re-sales. And then they also have a sister company that deals in rentals. Oleg is originally from Ukraine and was living in New Jersey. He did Pharma sales B2B, selling to doctors office. He worked with the company Abbot and eventually was transferred to the West Coast in Las Vegas, and then move to Phoenix. He highly recommends the book, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, learning the key concept - having money working for you, not the other way around. Initially invested in real estate in Las Vegas. He bought multiple condos with a cost of $70 K to 100 K. During the financial crisis of 2008 he watch those condos lose 50% of their value. Seg 2 Tucker Blaylock is his partner, a native of Arizona and an ex-Marine. He is highly organized and very good at marketing for a business. Oleg does the sales. They started the real estate firm called - The Suits in an office at the Arizona Biltmore hotel lobby. The second office is on 40th St. in the Arcadia area near LGO. 2019 they got their 3rd office near North Central and Bethany area. They owned the buildings of all their offices. Their next and 4th office will be opening in Scottsdale soon. They teach all their brokers how to own and run a business. This involves, how to read and set up a profit and loss, P&L. Their brokers are all 1099 reps. Each time they recruit a new broker they set them up with a seasoned broker as a mentor. They teach them how to build their own brand and become a listing agent. There are listing agents and buyers agents. You learn to create a business model, and also build your image with business attire. Then you invest back in yourself doing advertising and marketing. Their clients could be spending $3 or 5 or even $15 million on a property so they have an expectation of what their agent is. The Brokery is a boutique real estate firm. Realtors can get their license in 2 weeks, but need to go back to school for 90 hours to get a broker license. Seg 3 They recently were selling a housing complex called karma which was created by Boyer Vertical architecture firm, run by Jason Boyer. Karma is located 13th St. and Bethany, has 11 homes. It is a sustainable build with careful attention to detail and design with window locations and the layout. They also have clean tech, like span electrical panels. Boyer also created Our House development, in midtown Phoenix. Other builders they work with are, Jason Kush, with a development in North Scottsdale on Jomax. Branding and marketing are the key to any business. You want to attract like-minded people, employees, partners, and clients. Then repel people that do not fit with your brand. The Brokery brand is ‘relentlessly local'. Mini builders have a style to how they do it, an example is Trent Hancock of Camelot, they built Ranch Mine. Seg 4 Book recommendations, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, Tipping Point, and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. One of the main themes of Outliers, is you have to practice for 10,000 hours to become an expert. Geographic Farming - marketing, where a real estate broker or agent mails postcards to an area on a consistent basis. Relentlessly local, know the neighborhood. They do an analysis of an area, and determine the ROI for that area. Then you do research and scout the area with every day direct mailers and MLS direct mail route. They know the ROI of mailers. Agents need consistent mailing month by month for the whole year - 12 months. You mail postcards (best value) 2x / month for 6 months, then 1x / month for life. In the first 6 months you've created a brand as potential clients see your face 2x a month. They also use print magazine ads also, it is very visual. Overall this is a shotgun approach, where 3% will transact, and 3% will buy. Real estate agents are their own CEO, and it takes 3 to 5 years to really build your business. You have carrying cost of mailers which could go from 6 to 9 months before you're getting good returns on your money. In the interim real estate agents need to do other things to develop deals. One thing is to have a listing, do an open house and have people see the house. This can equate to free leads. You also do as many face-to-face meetings with the network you already have. You call everybody you know to let them know that you're in real estate, and have listings in the neighborhood you work in. You work one neighborhood and you dominate it. You know the neighborhood - this is sales and marketing. Then when a prospect asks you about a supermarket, school location or a good restaurant, you know it all. He is the George Eastman Professor of Management Science and a Professor of Statistics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Barnett holds a BA in mathematics from Columbia College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. His research specialty is applied mathematical modeling with a focus on problems of health and safety. In this episode, Arnie shares his “favorite mistake” story about blurting out something to a New York Times reporter who called to get his comment about a US Airways crash that had occurred earlier in the day. In part 2 of this 3 part series, Miyanovich and Yamane talk about David's amazing Sociology of Guns course at Wake Forest, future plans for presenting the world with a tag-team lecture on gun normality, LGO's upcoming 21st Century Gun Symposium idea, and David's ongoing committment to gun training.
In today's Training Segment, Rob discusses the recent surge of 'red dot optics' appearing on factory pistols. Is this good? Is it bad? It's cool, but is it right for self defensive, carry pistols? Are they all made the same or are there features to look for or to avoid? Next in the Politics Segment, Rob talks with Randy Miyan, CEO of Liberal Gun Owners. LGO was created to address the general belief that all gun owners are violence obsessed, deviants who can only be understood through "criminal and epidemiological studies of gun violence". And that all Liberals are far left, Democrats and pacifists. Randy discusses with Rob LGO's work and commitment to gun rights and public safety. LGO's has a regular blog and resource site, called LGO Lens as well as a podcast. Check them out today! If you liked what you heard today, share it with a friend and subscribe/follow today! Buckle up, y'all because this episode is jam-packed with nuggets of wisdom that will stick with you long after listening. Today I kicked it in the booth with bestselling author, socially conscious entrepreneur, and speaker Laura Gassner Otting (aka LGO). We talked about finding what you love to do, defining success and what is enough for yourself, motivation vs. discipline, control, imposter syndrome, and a new way to think about confidence. LGO is incredibly entertaining, an excellent storyteller, and someone who offers a fresh perspective. This episode has a little bit of everything for everyone and is well worth your time. Not to mention, it starts out with some PRO tips for ordering at the diner. Check it out! About the Guest: Washington Post Best Selling Author and Motivational Keynote speaker, Laura Gassner Otting, inspires people to push past the doubt and indecision that keep great ideas in limbo because her presentations make listeners think bigger and accept greater challenges that reach beyond their limited scope of belief. She delivers strategic thinking, well-honed wisdom, and perspective generated by decades of navigating change across the start-up, nonprofit, political, as well as philanthropic landscapes. Laura dares listeners to find their voice, and generate the confidence needed to tackle larger-than-life challenges. She leads them to seek new ways of leading, managing and mentoring others. Laura's entrepreneurial edge has been well-honed over a 25-year career that started as a Presidential Appointee in Bill Clinton's White House, where she helped shape AmeriCorps. She left a leadership role at the respected nonprofit search firm, Isaacson, Miller, to expand the startup ExecSearches.com. Laura also founded and ran the Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group, which partnered with the full gamut of mission-driven nonprofit executives, from start-up dreamers to scaling social entrepreneurs to global philanthropists. In 2015, Laura sold NPAG to the team that helped her build it, both because she was hungry for the next chapter and because she held an audacious dream of electing our nation's first female president. Along the way, while serving on Hillary Clinton's National Finance Committee, she was asked to do a TEDx talk which became so popular that it launched a speaking career. Laura has spoken across the United States and internationally to universities, companies, conferences, accelerators, TEDx, and the US Military. She is the author of Mission-Driven: Moving from Profit to Purpose (2015) and the Washington Post Best Seller Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life (2019). She lives with her husband, two teenage sons, and troublesome puppy outside of Boston, MA. Fun facts: I went to computer sleep away camp. Andi and Lise introduce a new feature for LGO; “Does It Hold Up?” in which they look at older media and determine if it could, basically, still hold up today. Here, in the inaugural episode of the feature, they are pleasantly surprised that the 1990 creature feature flick Tremors does hold up, and also had some interesting and cool aspects for the time in which it was made. In this flick, residents of a small, isolated Nevada town are confronted by mysterious underground creatures that are picking them off one by one. Good popcorn movie! Two-minute clip that will tell you what you need to know without watching the trailer, which actually had some spoilers. Shout-outs: Lise highly recommends the board game Ticket to Ride, in which players collect and play matching cards that allow them to claim railway routes that connect cities throughout North America. Fun strategy game! Andi is reading books by Carl Hiaasen, a Florida-based journalist who writes absolutely hilarious novels with pointed commentary, usually based to some extent in Florida. Nobody escapes his wit. Hiaasen is a master at capturing every day cray and how things can go totally off the rails.
LGO (Laura Gassner Otting) is a globally touring professional speaker (from TEDx Boston to The TODAY Show) and the Founder of Limitless Possibility, a niche consulting firm working with entrepreneurs, philanthropists, executives, and thought leaders to get them unstuck and achieving extraordinary results. Previously she was the Founder and CEO of NPAG (executive search firm serving nonprofits, foundations, universities and advocacy organizations) and a Political Appointee at The White House, USA. In this episode we talk about why purpose doesn’t have to be high or lofty, how we end up with other people’s definitions of purpose and the freedom of having more than one purpose. We talk about why millennials are the first generation who live as the same person at home and at work, brain science behind manifestation, the discomfort of going conscious, how hindsight makes a challenging journey sound easy, faking being an extrovert as a raging introvert, defining and creating your own success and why success means finding your own model of leadership. Interview de Frédéric Montagnon, co-fondateur de LGO.
Warning: this week’s discussion will include the subjects of transphobia, racism, anti-Semitism, anti-LGBTQ sentiment, and sexual assault. This week, Andi and Lise were joined by Tara Scott, book reviewer extraordinaire (Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and The Lesbian Review), to discuss writers whose work they may still admire but who they have stopped supporting because of said writers’ personal views made public and/or actions. There are no easy answers, and everyone who consumes content should make their own decisions on whether to support that content or not. Here, the LGO crew grapple with what that means in their own consumption habits, and grapple, too, with what it means to find out one of your faves has said or done something that goes against their own personal views and/or that has potentially harmed others. Find Tara at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and The Lesbian Review.
Laura Gassner Otting, or LGO for short, or the ‘Wonderwoman’ for those whose life has been touched by her, is our today’s guest. She really is a true Wonderwoman as she is now helping other people break through their barriers and become limitless, just as how she’s blazed her path. She is someone that I know you, our dear tribe, would resonate with. Laura’s vision is to help other people realize that they are bigger than the life they deserve, that they can achieve the life that they demand. She helps other people saw the greatness that's in them and to become the best versions of themselves. However, like most thought-leaders and entrepreneurs, Laura spent years discovering what job is good for her, and not just a good job. Laura described her young self as a super nerdy, civics geek. She went to the law school, as she thought she wanted to get into politics but she realized she’s more of a stage left person who finds delight in lifting others up. She ended up dropping out of law school and helped a politician secure his office and then worked in an executive search firm. After a few years of working, she saw a different way that she knew would be a better way to run the firm. She left and started her own firm which she leads for about 15 years. She sold her shares and pursue a path she feels would allow her to make an even greater impact on other people and to the world. Today, we will be blessed with huge chunks of wisdom Laura has freely and happily shared with us. We will be learning about determining what success really means to us and we will understand that wherever and whatever we’ve been through and are going through, there is greatness inside each and every one of us and that we are able to determine and achieve what kind of life we desire. We will understand that money and comfort should not stop us from achieving greater things. We will understand that we are limitless. Be ready to blaze your own greater path today! Here’s What You Missed Laura’s early career years that made her realize what kind of life she wants to pursueHow to determine what success means to youWho to listen toThe truth about work-life balanceWhat is a side quest and when you should go into itWhat kind of a leader are you?Where to find the motivation?Dreams come from confidence Knowledge Nuggets 8:18] The success on paper wasn't happiness to me. I filled in all, check boxes all along the path that everybody else told me I should fill in. So why aren't I happy? We are told what makes a job good, but we're never asked, what's going to make a job good for you. [12:25] Ask these questions: What does success mean to me? Is it, making tons of money? Is it having a huge impact on the world? Is it being able to have dinner with my family every night at 6:00 PM? Is it, travel? [13:33] Nobody gets a vote in this life, except you. The problem is we're giving votes to people in our lives who shouldn't even have voices. So the first question to ask yourself is whose vote actually counts? [16:01]I think that we all need 'control' differently. So control, I think is one part of the four elements, of continence. There's connection, calling, contribution and control. [19:56] There's no work-life balance. I would rather see you build work that actually allows you to manifest who you are all day, every day because then you can be the full version of yourself. [23:56] Go on a side quest. If you feel like you can't necessarily do things now, go on a side quest, because dreams come from confidence. People say like, "if you can dream it, you can do it". But I actually believe if you can start to do it, you can dream about it. As you get the confidence, as you start to display competence, you can develop the confidence, then dream an even bigger dream. [25:59] Failure is not the finale. It's actually fulcrum. It's the place where we learn and we innovate and regrow. [30:11] My role as a leader is to pull out the best in the people that I'm serving. However, entrepreneurs should be very clear with what brings out their best, when they can serve their people their best. [38:40] The difference between price and value: It's not about how fast and how cheaply you can do something. It's not about how fast and how cheaply you can do something, it's about the value that you're bringing to it. [40:54] Do I feel fulfilled? Never, because with every new success, it's not that I want more, I want more money, more fame or this or that. But, I want more reach. I want more impact. I want to learn more. [41:59] We all just get this one big juicy life. That's all we get, right? Why not live into every moment of it? [46:01] Internal/Intrinsic motivation is the key to motivation. You cannot be insatiably hungry for someone else's goals, for someone else's dreams, for someone else's success for someone else's happiness, but you can be insatiably hungry for the thing that you actually want. [48:11] "You would worry a whole lot less about what people thought of you if you realized how seldom they did."- Eleanor Roosevelt [49:57] The best antidote to any rut is action. If the antidote to any rut is action, and you're trying to figure out what action to take, choose an action that allows you to be more of your 'fundamental best person' because you already are that person. You're just not that person enough yet. Today we spoke to Laura Gassner Otting – author of ‘Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life’, keynote speaker, confidence catalyst and educator of consonance. Laura tells us about the four elements of consonance – calling, connection, contribution, and control...going into detail about why they are important, and what they are exactly. We open a dialogue about meaningful work and what that is all about. Purpose is highlighted – as is when personal and professional lives and careers can change trajectories for the right reasons. Laura shares what she has learned about herself over the past few months, and what she is having to conquer now, displaying great resilience. Thanks for joining us on our show LGO! #limitless
Most of us spend our lives following someone else idea of success and happiness. We let other people's voices have a vote in what we do. We check boxes, chase gold stars, and “Lean In” only to feel incomplete. When we don't define success in our own terms, then finding our purpose and carving our own path becomes impossible. So how do we break the cycle so that we can live our best lives? That's exactly what Laura Gassner Otting helps people do. Laura has a new book out, Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life and it debuted as #2 in the Washington Post bestseller list right behind Michele Obama. Andi and Lise are super-stoked that F/F book reviewer extraordinaire Tara Scott stopped by to hang out with them as they unpack sex, gender, identity, and representation. Lise offers a shout-out to a cute video game she and her wife have been playing called Terraria. And Andi finally saw the movie Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and yes, she loved it. (may be a bit too violent for some) You can find Tara at The Lesbian Review and Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and at the Lesbian Talk Show, where she hosts the podcast “Les do books.” Find LGO on Twitter! @LGOPodcast And at the LGO website, lezgeekoutcast.com https://lezgeekoutcast.files.wordpress.com/2020/04/lgo_76_gender_rep.mp3

Episode 8 - LGO by Cuse Football Moment
Is the definition of success you've been carrying around your whole life what really makes you happy? Should we really be following our passion? In this episode, Laura Gassner Otting (@HeyLGO) talks about how our passions will beat us up and why that is such a good thing. She'll share how we can get unstuck, find success on our own terms, and live without limits. Life isn't easy and it isn't supposed to be. Our life doesn't have a user manual and unless we can battle through the sticky parts, we'll be living a life of 'what if'. Tune in to this episode to hear from the incomparable LGO! The shooter stole $20 dollars from Arthur and was never found. After a 23-day battle in a medically induced coma, Renowitzky woke on Christmas Eve day to learn he would never walk or talk again. That news inspired him to fight paralysis by spreading spinal cord injury awareness and gave him the “line in the sand” against youth violence; Renowitzky knew the best route was to create his nonprofit, LGO, and aggressively spread his message of overcoming adversity. In recognition of his work, Renowitzky was named a Home Town hero by the Bay Area News Group for the summer of 2009 and also received a citation of appreciation from the Oakland Mayoral Council Against Violence that same year. Arthur has been featured sharing LGO on media outlets such as ABC Los Angeles, KTVU Bay Area, CNN, Hot Talk New Radio 560, Daily Review, Oakland Tribune, Chronicle Live. Renowitzky has also presented his story to over 130 California high schools and middle schools, as well as juvenile halls, disciplinary camps, Boys & Girls Club(s), YMCA(s), Oakland City Hall, Hollywood events, churches and many hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, reaching an estimated 100,000+ youth. LGO morphs into the Kameron Hurley fan club as Lise and Andi dive into her latest book, The Light Brigade, a time travel military science fiction novel that explores themes of militarized capitalism, war, and connection through the eyes of grunt Dietz. Through tech that disassembles soldiers and sends them as beams of light into combat zones and reassembles them upon re-entry, Dietz realizes that she is experiencing the war between Earth and Mars differently than others: she’s jumping around its timeline, which gives her a unique and horrifying view of battles and comrades lost and gained. This is a uniquely layered, tightly-written story that stays with readers long after they finish the last page, as its themes resonate with contemporary issues. Don't Feel Stuck. Embrace Failure, Get Punched In The Face, and Become Limitless with LGO Today:Have you ever felt stuck? That there’s more for you to achieve, more to your ever-unfolding story, but you’re just not sure how to get there? Then you’ve come to the right place because Laura Gassner Otting helps people do just that. She is the author of the brand new book Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life, which debuted at #2 in the Washington Post bestseller list right behind Michele Obama. She is a serial entrepreneur who has started and sold a successful international executive search firm, built philanthropic and political action committees from scratch, and was a White House appointee on the team which created the national service project, AmeriCorps. Laura is like a punch in the face wrapped in a warm hug. QUOTE: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. It's a fulcrum. Failure, it is a place from which we learn, we grow, and we thrive. I was giving this talk about two months ago, in Austin at Renaissance weekend and there was an astronaut in the audience. This astronaut had done three different spacewalks and at one point I said, except for you sir, because failure for you would most definitely be the finale ou there. Now for the rest of us walking around on terra firma, unless you are attached to an oxygen tether, failure is the fulcrum. Failure is the place from which we grow, we learn and we discover more things about ourselves. We realize that success might not have looked like what we expected success to look like when we first took the first step. It doesn't mean that it's not a success. So I would urge people to understand that failure is not a finale, it's just fulcrum. Andi and Lise lost their sh*t when award-winning sci fi/fantasy writer Kameron Hurley agreed to chat with them about writing and her very latest release, which just dropped March 19, The Light Brigade. Hurley’s website bio states she’s a writer “specializing in war and resistance movements,” but she’s also known as one of the most important voices in the field engaging in intense world-building and explorations of gender, sexuality, and politics. You may know her for her essay collection Geek Feminist Revolution, which included the Hugo-winning essay “We Have Always Fought: Challenging the ‘Women, Cattle, and Slaves’ Narrative.” She is the author of the fantasy series the Worldbreaker Saga; the Bel Dame Apocrypha (God’s War Trilogy), and the space opera The Stars Are Legion (which Andi and Lise raved about in episode 19). On this episode of LGO, Hurley dished about writing, her own process (upshot: writing is hard!!!!), her work, and specifically about The Light Brigade, which has been described by a reviewer as a cross between Starship Troopers and Edge of Tomorrow. Another reviewer described it as a “time-twisting, genre-redefining military science fiction novel.” Thank you, Kameron, for joining us! Andi and Lise are losing their minds over the My Favorite Murder podcast, which is hosted by comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. MFM is a “weekly true crime comedy podcast” in which Karen and Georgia take turns on each episode to talk about a particular crime they researched. They also do mini-episodes that feature stories from listeners. The podcast has taken off and now there are live podcasts to audiences of thousands, and a fandom that operates not only as fans (murderinos), but as a community that launches projects, opens local chapters, and creates lasting connections. My Favorite Murder website Find out more in these articles about the podcast and its hosts: The Atlantic Rolling Stone Washington Post The Week This week Lise was watching The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Andi and Lise discuss the annual giant writing event, NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, in which participants hammer out a short novel of 50,000 words over the course of November. They tell you what it is, how it works, what some strategies might be to help you approach your NaNo writing project, offer their own experiences doing it, and remind you not to freak out. If you’re a novice writer, NaNo is a great way to see what the professional writing life is like, because it requires you to write every day if you want to hit that 50,000-word mark by the end of the month. It also provides structure and a writing community, which is really valuable because you need critique to help you grow as a writer. There other types of writing events, too: Academic Writing Month (AcWriMo) National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) And this week, Lise recommends the medical mystery/weirdness podcast Sawbones while Andi implores people to please watch the CW series Legends of Tomorrow. https://lezgeekoutcast.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/LGO_44.mp3
Andi and Lise discuss gatekeeping in fandom, and how it excludes many already-marginalized groups from participating in fan culture, including various elements of it like cosplay. They also discuss how fandoms and pop culture are reflections of the larger society in which they exist, and Lise brings up how that might keep women and other marginalized people from going into STEM fields. Sadly, gatekeeping isn’t something that is imposed on marginalized groups by a non-marginalized group. LGBTQ gatekeeping occurs, too, and Andi and Lise discuss how that was exemplified by the announcement that gender-fluid lesbian actress Ruby Rose would be portraying Batwoman in the forthcoming Arrowverse crossover event on the CW. Rose was accused of “not being queer enough” and had to leave social media because of the harassment along those lines directed toward her. For further reference: Andi mentioned Heather Hogan’s article on Autostraddle about the new Dr. Who. Here’s the link. Also, Clare McBride at SyFy Wire did an op-ed called “ ‘Not Gay Enough’: Ruby Rose, Gatekeeping, and Toxic Fandom.” Link here. Lise mentioned a YouTube video by Jessie Gender about gatekeeping in queer culture. Catch the link here. Andi and Lise are really into the webcomic, Stand Still Stay Silent, written and drawn by Finnish-Swedish artist Minna Sundberg. Actually, they might be complete and utter fangirls of it and it was Lise, this time, who turned Andi onto this amazing post-apocalyptic story that has elements of Nordic mythology in it. SSSS is so good that it won a Reuben in 2015 for best online comic (the Reubens are given out by the National Cartoonists Society, and it is the highest honor that the society bestows). From the website: “It’s been 90 years after the end of the old world. Most of the surviving population of the Known world live in Iceland, the largest safe area in existence, while the safe settlements in the other Nordic countries; Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, are small and scarce. “Countless mysterious and unspoken dangers lurk outside the safe areas, the Silent world, and hunters, mages and cleansers will spend their lives defending the settlements against the terrifying beings. Because of a great fear towards everything in the Silent world no official attempts to explore the ruins of the old have been made, and most of the information about it has turned into ancient lore, known by few. “But now, at last, it is time to send out an research crew into the great unknown! A poorly funded and terribly unqualified crew, but a crew nonetheless.” — The art and story are engaging, the characterization is brilliant, and the artist brings in mythological elements and fuses them incredibly well with the larger story arcs of the post-apocalyptic theme (this apocalypse originating with a disease) and the reclamation of older, pagan traditions that provide a way to cope with and survive in new circumstances. Find Stand Still. Stay Silent HERE Find the artist, Minna Sundberg, on Twitter HERE (@SSSSComic) and HERE (@hummingfluff) Also, in honor of recording this podcast, Andi was drinking Einstök beer, crafted in Iceland, located 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle. In this instance, she was indulging in the Icelandic Wee Heavy. Super delish. https://lezgeekoutcast.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/LGO_39.mp3
Andi and Lise watched (okay, re-watched because they dig this movie) Thor: Ragnarok (2017), part of the Marvel Universe movie, which means it’s a giant bucket of special effects, awesome cinematography, and epic battle scenes. But what this Thor movie brought – and something Andi and Lise totally enjoyed – was a slightly comedic turn amidst the dark subject matter, and we get to see a lighter side of Thor even as he struggles to get back to Asgard before the prophecy of Ragnarök comes to pass in which Asgard is destroyed. Particular favorites in this film include Cate Blanchett’s amazing turn as Hela, Goddess of Death (seriously, we could watch Blanchett write a grocery list and be enthralled, but her turn as a villain is awesome!); Tessa Thompson as “Scrapper 142”—a Valkyrie, also from Asgard (more movies with her, please); director Taika Waititi voicing Korg, a being made of rocks who is the world’s nicest slacker revolutionary; and Jeff Goldblum as an earnest and “fun-uncle-ish” despot on Sakaar, a planet made of trash. See the trailer Cast list https://lezgeekoutcast.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/LGO_38.mp3
Andi and Lise had their minds completely blown by “Nanette,” the comedy show/performance piece by Tasmanian comedienne Hannah Gadsby, currently available on Netflix. In this brilliant and searing examination of comedy and who it serves, “Art, [Gadsby] makes clear—from painting to comedy—does not liberate everyone equally. It can replicate the same privileges and exclusions as the culture in which it was made,” Moira Donegan says in her piece on “Nanette” in the New Yorker. “Nanette” is a blistering tour de force in which Gadsby lays part of her soul bare and then leaves the audience to grapple with its role in perpetuating the marginalization of those it demands entertain us. And in the wake of the 2016 election and the #MeToo movement, Gadsby’s indictment of homophobia and misogyny and her dissection of comedy has become a phenomenon and a statement. “I really was writing as though I was throwing a grenade,” Gadsby told Rolling Stone, “and I fully expected for the show to seal me off in the margins. I am so shocked and overwhelmingly stunned. It’s become bigger than me. And I’m happy for that.” Both Andi and Lise are of the opinion that this is the first major piece of art—a blistering fusion of comedy and storytelling—to emerge since the 2016 elections and will probably come to define this era in ways we don’t yet even know. Hannah Gadsby’s “Nanette” on Netflix (US; check your local Netflix site if you’re not in the US). Gadsby’s just released memoir, Ten Steps to Nanette is available at various booksellers.
