The third season of in-depth author interviews continues with Essie Chambers, author of "Swift River." Longlisted for The Center for Fiction 2024 First Novel Prize, there's a lot to unpack in this novel. Sixteen year old Diamond is the only Black person in the town of Swift River, stuck in a town she hates it as much as it hates her. Her mother is a drug addict who can't pay the bills, and making things even worse, Diamond is buried in an obese body she can't escape, a symbol of the generational trauma that weighs on her every single day. "Swift River" focuses on three generations of women in one family, the trauma they endure and pass on. It also shows us the hope Diamond holds for her future, and a historic setting in a northern ‘sundown town,' a town where Black people are only allowed to pass through during the day.

A brand new unabridged recording of THE THOUSAND AUTUMNS OF JACOB DE ZOET, from the author of UTOPIA AVENUE. Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2010 Be transported to a place like no other: a tiny, man-made island in the bay of Nagasaki, for two hundred years the sole gateway between Japan and the West. Here, in the dying days of the 18th-century, a young Dutch clerk arrives to make his fortune. Instead he loses his heart. Step onto the streets of Dejima and mingle with scheming traders, spies, interpreters, servants and concubines as two cultures converge. In a tale of integrity and corruption, passion and power, the key is control - of riches and minds, and over death itself.

Braids was scheduled to premiere at the Live Theatre in Newcastle this April. Longlisted for the Alfred Fagon Award, it follows two girls – Jasmine and Abeni - who navigate growing up as the only people of colour in a rural part of Durham. Kirsty is joined by writer Olivia Hannah, and actors Olivia Onyehara and Cynthia Emeagi, who will be performing a scene from the play. With Front Row focusing on ‘listening’ this week, music writer Kieran Yates considers the changing landscape of music, from live radio broadcasts to live streaming and ‘quarantine concerts’. She also discusses the listening experience of what’s called 8D audio, and the importance of listening on headphones. And the death of the singer songwriter John Prine, who won the respect of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Kris Kristofferson. Coming to you again from the Halifax Central Library, bestselling and award-winning author Michael Crummey sits down with Chronicle Herald columnist and author John DeMont to discuss his new book: The Innocents. Longlisted for the 2019 Scotiabank Giller Prize, The Innocents is described as a sweeping, heart-wrenching, deeply immersive novel about a brother and sister alone in a small world. A brother and sister are orphaned in an isolated cove on Newfoundland's northern coastline. Their home is a stretch of rocky shore governed by the feral ocean, by a relentless pendulum of abundance and murderous scarcity. Still children with only the barest notion of the outside world, they have nothing but the family's boat and the little knowledge passed on haphazardly by their mother and father to keep them. As they fight for their own survival through years of meager catches and storms and ravaging illness, it is their fierce loyalty to each other that motivates and sustains them. But as seasons pass and they wade deeper into the mystery of their own natures, even that loyalty will be tested. Bookings is recorded and produced by Paul MacKay for the King’s Co-op Bookstore in Halifax, Nova Scotia. But those wonders have a dark side―one that will soon force a reckoning few could have anticipated.  Half-demon Briar is content with her structured life as an archivist, a far cry from the chaos of her background and upbringing. Briar’s simple and predictable existence is rocked when she discovers something sinister powers one of the grand, new inventions of her era.  Isabella Castel, the only daughter of Viscount Sherard, is far from the brainless socialite she pretends to be. Isabella is everything Briar is not: passionate, creative and impulsive, but with secrets to rival even Briar’s own. Two more unlikely partners should not exist, yet if the women cannot find a way to work together, they will lose far more than their reputations.  Can a half-demon and a debutante work past their secrets before all hell breaks loose?   And I ask Lise these questions Your next book is about to be published and I am dying to know more. Before fake news dominated headlines, Kevin Young was tracking down its roots. The author of 13 books of poetry and prose, poetry editor for The New Yorker and director of the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Young has spent the past six years tracing the history of news-worthy fraudulence all the way back to the 18th century. Young’s latest book Bunk: The Rise of Hoaxes, Humbug, Plagiarists, Phonies, Post-Facts, and Fake News chronicles the racially prejudiced path that brought fake news to where it is to today. Longlisted for the 2017 National Book Award, Bunk dives into hoaxes big and small that permeate American history and the cultural attitudes that drive them. Young joins Carole Bell, an assistant professor of Communication Studies at Northeastern University whose research explores the connections between media and politics, for a broad-ranging discussion on the current state and political consequences of fake news. A book signing will follow. Speakers: Kevin Young is poetry editor for The New Yorker, director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library, and the author of 13 books of poetry and prose including The Grey Album: On the Blackness of Blackness, which was a New York Times Notable Book, and Jelly Roll: A Blues, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. Carole Bell is an assistant professor of Communication Studies and affiliated faculty in Political Science at Northeastern University. Bell’s teaching and research focuses on the intersections of media, politics, public opinion and public policy, with a particular focus on issues of social identity. Her first book, The Politics of Interracial Romance in American Film, is forthcoming from Routledge. This event is sponsored by Radius at MIT.
