Romance, Representation, and Publishing  Andi and Lise discuss what's known as the lesbian fiction publishing industry (as distinguished from “mainstream” publishers that publish LGBTQ+ fiction) and the role of books that feature romance as a main plot in the industry. They unpack the scarcity of genre fiction in lesbian fiction that isn't romance-driven (but may include romance as a subplot) and discuss the pros and cons of being defined by a particular genre. They're excited to see more books that include asexual, trans, and non-binary characters in romance, but they'd like to see more characters like that in genre fiction that may or may not have a romantic sub-plot.  Links of interest:  About Naiad Press  Obituary/bio of Barbara Grier, one of the founders of Naiad  Lise MacTague's list of publications  Andi Marquette's list of publications  A small list of lesbian fiction publishing houses: Bold Strokes Books, Bella Books, Bedazzled Ink Publishing, Bywater Books, Dirt Road Books, Flashpoint Publications, Launch Point Press, Sapphire Books Publishing, Ylva Publishing  Shout-outs: Lise got an electric bike for her birthday, and she's super-stoked about how it makes riding uphill so much easier! Highly recommend! Andi just finished the first in Tasha Suri's Burning Kingdoms series, The Jasmine Throne, which features two female protagonists thrown together in extremely difficult circumstances. Gorgeously written, political intrigue, excellent world-building, and F/F rep.

Andi and Jove might have wandered in the weeds more than 56 percent of the time today, but oh, well. They're super-stoked about R.G. Emanuelle's A Year in the Kitchen, which is 12 recipes R.G. developed the first year of Dirt Road Books (which she co-founded with Andi, Jove, Michelle Teichman and Gill McKnight). All proceeds from this book go to the Oregon Food Bank. They also had a long discussion of LGBTQ rep in mainstream publishing, talked about Gentleman Jack (thanks, Stevie Carroll!) and movies. And other stuff. Because weeds. 56 percent of the time. Nov. 16: Women and Wordster Danielle Zion talks science fiction. WOOO! Check it out. Nov. 17: Author Karen Frost with an excellent discussion about getting LGBTQ books into mainstream markets. Seriously. Read this. Nov. 18: Author, explorer, and Women and Wordster Stevie Carroll managed to get in on a Calderdale Heritage Walk titled "Cliffe Hill - The Walkers and Others," which has gotten majorly popular because of the BBC series Gentleman Jack. Nov. 19: Author and Women and Wordster Ash Bartlett doesn't like the movie You've Got Mail (1998) and finds Point Break (1991) a much better kind of statement. Find out why. Nov. 20: Author and Women and Wordster Clifford Mae Henderson was on jury duty, but that's not really the point of her story, which is more about the kind of validation being legally married can bring you. Women and Words Overview 24-30 November 2018 Andi and Jove are gearing up for the annual Hootenanny event at Women and Words, which means they shut the blog down for around two weeks. Once the Hootenanny starts (Dec. 12), that’s all you get, is GIVEAWAYS OUT THE WAZOO! Andi spent some time this week back-and-forthing with KD Williamson (who is awesome; see below) while Jove seems to spend tons of time finding cool organizations to donate to.   24 Nov.: Women and Wordster Erin Saluta posted a few books whose characters are in law enforcement. And who doesn’t like a woman in (or out) of uniform? LOL Women and Words link HERE   25 Nov.: Author Randi Triant stopped by to chat about writing craft and writing characters that are vanquished—she’s working on re-doing the trope of characters making all the right choices and succeeding, because sometimes the right choices don’t mean you’ll succeed. Women and Words link HERE Randi Triant’s website   26 Nov.: Author and Women and Wordster KD Williamson talked about being bullied in elementary school and the bond she forged with her sister. Women and Words link HERE KD Williamson’s website   27 Nov.: Author, Women and Wordster, and lesbian herstory legend Lee Lynch wrote about the things you can find when on a trip to the doctor. Women and Words link HERE More about Lee here   28 Nov.: Author and Women and Wordster Andi Marquette and Tucker the merry elf posted a reminder about the Women and Words annual Hootenanny (giant-ass book giveaway event) that starts Dec. 12 and goes through Dec. 23. Women and Words link HERE   29 Nov.: Authors and Women and Wordsters KD Williamson and Andi Marquette did a back-and-forth Q&A with each other, talking about  writing, diversity, and fanfic. Women and Words link HERE   30 Nov.: Author and Women and Wordster Andi Marquette lamented the lack of LGBTQ+ - themed holiday movies, and then pointed out a few bright spots. And Jove mentioned in the podcast the 2000 movie What’s Cooking. Women and Words link HERE Find Andi on Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, and her website   Jove and Andi remind people that this time of year can be hard on some, but find the bright spots in giving. Jove reminds people of the microloan site Kiva and Andi reminded people of Heifer International, which provides domestic animals to people in developing nations. Jove also brought up Laundry Love, which helps low-income and no-income people and families wash clothes and bedding by partnering with groups, schools, and local Laundromats. And she brought up Socks for Soldiers, in which people actually knit a pair of socks for an active-duty soldier. If you can’t knit, there are other ways to help.   And Jove would like everyone to know (because Andi doesn’t like to talk too much about accomplishments…lol)  that Andi’s holiday reboot of Dickens’ Christmas Carol, The Bureau of Holiday Affairs, was one of six LGBTQ+ holiday books included in a write-up in the “Happy Ever After” section of USA Today, under “Rainbow Trends.” Go see.   ALSO! Dirt Road Books is releasing the anthology Learning Curve. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Australian organization One Girl, which helps provide education for girls in Africa. So if you’re looking for a new read this holiday, and want to feel even better about where your money goes, we hope you consider buying it.

Other than supplying fantastic recipes for the newsletter. RG has qualifications in both english literature and food? How do they pair together? What goes into good food-focused writing? RG shares an old timey food fact about asparagus with us.   Books we talk about The Potion by RG Emanuelle Publisher: Dirt Road Books Synopsis Vera Kennedy, widow of Professor James Kennedy, wants to be a scientist, but in Victorian Boston, that isn’t an option for women. Nevertheless, after assisting her husband in the laboratory with his experiments, she has learned everything she could through his unintended tutelage. After his death, she continues his work until she veers off onto a different path with her own experiments, which threaten to consume her to the exclusion of all else. Georgette Harris, widow of Professor Roland Harris, has been left destitute in the wake of her husband’s death. He had amassed mountains of debt and left Georgette to pay it, in any way she could, and now she occupies a dilapidated and mostly empty mansion with what little food her remaining housekeeper can scrounge. So when a medicinals company wants to purchase a formula that Roland had proposed to them, Georgette searches for it without success, and then discovers evidence that her husband had worked with James Kennedy. Armed with this information, she seeks the help of Vera in uncovering the missing formula. But Vera is not one to give up secrets easily, though she is inexplicably drawn to Georgette. Despite her reservations, she considers Georgette’s request, and they soon discover that both their husbands were involved in an experiment layered in deception and danger. Together, they sort through mysterious clues and talk to unscrupulous men in order to discover what that outcome was supposed to be and in the process, they may discover something far stronger between them.   Get This Book On Amazon   Add Spice To Taste by RG Emanuelle Synopsis Giovanna "Jo" Rossini teaches cooking classes at The New York Culinary Institute and though she enjoys it, she's still struggling to make ends meet and figure out how to get her life back on track. Her dream of owning her own café was broken when the business failed, and her heart was shattered with the end of her long-term relationship.  Then, a Moroccan cooking class reveals a few surprises when Jo finds herself attracted to Julianna, one of her students. Despite her internal attempts to deny it, she soon discovers that the attraction is mutual. Even more surprisingly, she must also fend off the unwanted advances of another student—and deal with her own weaknesses and past mistakes. Can Jo find the courage to allow Julianna past her self-imposed boundaries and allow herself to love again? Or will she choose to keep her heart locked away instead? This novella contains original recipe and photos of dishes from Jo’s Moroccan cooking class.   Get This Book On Amazon   Patrons Did you know that you get exclusive content when you become a patron? Find out more here.   About The Lesbian Review The Lesbian Review is a popular website that features book and movie reviews.
