Wicked is popular! The film adaptation of the musical adaptation of the literary reimagining of the Wicked Witch of the West is surpassing all box office expectations. Composer Stephen Schwartz already announced a 3rd and 4th film in the works. The Wickedverse is expanding. But why does this story resonate so deeply right now? As the world faces a resurgence of fascism, audiences yearn for a trip over the rainbow and they find inspiration in Elphaba's fight against the oppression of the talking animals in Oz which feels eerily timely, reminding us all of the importance to speak out, act up and fight back. Today we hold space and each other's well manicured hands for Wicked with theater kid and pop culture expert Robyn Pennacchia, a writer for the news magazine Wonkette.Join us as we look at all the intoxicating green elixirs surrounding Wicked, The Wiz, Return to Oz and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, and the exciting rise of Cynthia Erivo as a once in a lifetime vocalist.FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM:★ instagram.com/robynelyse★ instagram.com/faustofernos ★ instagram.com/marcfelion  Plus-- • One of the most infamous pairs of the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 'The Wizard of Oz' sells for $32.5 million at auction.• Village People's lead singer Victor Willis says YMCA is not a gay anthem and threatens to sue anyone who says so. • Mariah Carey responds to claims her fan video was made with AI.• Nobody mourns the Wicked: the assassination of United Health CEO reveals a lot of Americans really, really hate our healthcare system.

SUPD Presents : Ana Marie Cox "Getting Better" with guest A.J. Daulerio  A.J. Daulerio is the creator of The Small Bow, one of my all-time-favorite newsletters, which he began publishing in 2018. It's about addiction and recovery and also about family stories, big memories, stubborn feelings, and experiencing grace. The fact that I, a not-sober person, find it so resonant with my experiences suggests some of the expansive excellence you'll find within. I consider The Small Bow a newsletter about being an accountable, self-aware adult, which is a topic area that is oddly underexplored in … the world? A.J.'s personal history is pretty well documented. He was an editor at the sports website Deadspin before becoming editor-in-chief of Gawker in 2012. That year, he published clips of a sex tape that featured Hulk Hogan, who ultimately sued Gawker for $100 million and won. The suit ended Gawker as a company and threw Daulerio's life into utter disarray. Ana Marie Cox is a political columnist for The New Republic and a culture critic whose writing has appeared in Texas Monthly, Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, and NBC.com. Through 2022, she wrote a “Sober Questioning” column at The Cut. She hosts the science fiction and political science podcast Space the Nation with Dan Drezner (created to fill the hole in their hearts when The Churn was canceled). She's a regular on the Stephen King podcast The Losers Club (a favorite episode is this one on recovery themes in King's work). Her memoir, “Just Like Your Mother” — a reported account of addiction, recovery, and intergenerational trauma — will be published by Random House. She hosted "With Friends Like These," a podcast from Crooked Media from 2017-2022. During the pandemic When we recognized there was a pandemic, she had a regular Instagram Live check-in with John Moe, that archive is here. She conducted the "Talk" interviews featured in the New York Times Magazine from 2015-17. She was the senior political correspondent for MTV News from 2016 until they pivoted to video. She is on cable news more often than she'd like, which isn't that often. Since starting the snarky political blog Wonkette in 2004, she has worked at a bewildering variety of outlets, including Time magazine, GQ, Air America, and The Guardian. Prior to Wonkette, she was an editor at Mother Jones and at the webzine Suck.com. She is the author of the romantic comedy novel Dog Days. Ana gained attention in 2008 for being an early, enthusiastic adopter of Twitter and quickly amassed a following of 1 million. We break down the latest conspiracy counterclaims from One America Network News, while learning the difference between the conservative persecution complex worldview -- that Big Tech is censoring conservatism because reasons -- and the reality: that big companies are funding and propping up garbage conservative outlets like OANN. Alex Jones, the far right talk radio host who pioneered the art of making money from internet conspiracy theories, is facing the worst moment of his career. It is quite possibly the apocalypse of Jones. After making up thousands of lies over a career spending decades, Jones is now starting to face consequences. In August, a jury in Austin, Texas, returned a damages verdict against Jones for defaming the parents of a child who was killed in a school shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, in 2012. Jones was ordered to pay $4.1 million in compensatory damages and $49 million in punitive damages. The lawyer for the plaintiffs in this case, which is one of only several, insists that this will be only the beginning of what's going to happen to Jones and his company Infowars. But is that right? Will he actually have to pay those large-scale fines? And will Jones be affected by large scale fines at all? And in the long term, are legal suits a way forward to stop the propagation of conspiracy theories in this country? Joining me to discuss in this episode is Liz Dye. She is a columnist with the legal affairs website Above the Law. And she also is a writer at Wonkette.com. This episode was recorded 8/7/2022. When Ana Marie Cox said, “I can't wring self-worth out of the universe,” we felt that hit like a mountain. Ana spent the better part of two decades as a political columnist and culture critic. She started the political blog Wonkette in 2004, and worked at outlets like The New York Times, Time magazine, GQ, Air America, and The Guardian. After living behind a professional persona for a long time, Ana started to talk about more personal parts of her life publicly, like being bi-polar and struggling with alcohol addiction. She moved away from politics and we talk about why, as well as what getting sober was like for her, but not just from alcohol. We talk about breaking the addiction to productivity, busy-ness, approval, and co-dependency. Ana has some VERY poignant things to share about mother / daughter relationships, forgiveness, and real recovery. As you'll hear, Ana is willing to get very real and we get an inside view into her Sober Questioning column in The Cut, where she answers readers' questions about drinking — and not drinking — every other week. We are all tired as hell right now. After the last few years of….ALL OF IT….we're all depleted. From the pandemic, to the political drama, to the possible new world war with Ukraine…it never seems to end. And mid-February can be the hardest time of year–even in the best of times. So here we are. The no-shit is that these are definitely not the best of times. Many of us are exhausted, beaten-down, and wounded. None of us is unchanged. And the global post-COVID mental health crisis is just getting started. 2022 may be the year we end the pandemic and start the suffering that follows. From suicide to divorce to bankruptcies to alcoholism, it's all happening–and getting worse.  We are not OK. But we can be. We can get through it. To better days. To healthier lives. To happier times. But we all need help making that happen. This is a time especially, to look for the helpers.  And Ana Marie Cox (@AnaMarieCox) is one of those helpers that is now rising to meet this moment. She's been to the dark edge, and is coming back to help others avoid it. After decades as a media innovator and self-described “troublemaker”, the trailblazing Founding Editor of Wonkette, political columnist, and culture critic you may know from cable TV new and places like MTV, Esquire, the Washington Post and her highly successful Crooked Media podcast, Friends Like These, Ana has launched a new life and a new column. It's focused on sobriety. But also on her Christianity, her experiences, and her unique brand of wisdom.  And she joins our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a very real, very candid, very thoughtful, very useful conversation–about the hard challenges of life in these exceptionally challenging times. They talk about drinking, divorce, the dysfunction of our politics and media, and how to get through it all. And weave into the biggest political issues and challenges along the way. It's hard to fight when you're tired. And we're all tired. But this is an invaluable conversation to help you through it. It's a life-hack, a dose of reality, and an injection of advice. It's unlike any other episode of this show before. And it's one you'll want to share.  Check out Ana Marie Cox's work as mentioned/discussed in this episode: Sober Questioning. It's only been 16 years since the forces of social media entered our lives. But in those 16 years, they have moved from the margins — teenagers, game players, internet professionals and fame-seekers — to the center of culture. So much so that when Facebook and two platforms owned by Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, went offline on Oct. 4, analysts were alarmed. For many people, Facebook is the internet, so their outage stopped businesses in their tracks, paralyzed economic transactions and turned some workdays into spontaneous days off. What does this mean for and about us? Have we adjusted our social, emotional and economic habits in order to best support and cope with this new normal? Does social media have a greater influence than we have acknowledged? What should we do to adjust?  Guest host Chris Farrell dug into the shifting social media landscape with Macalester College professor Ana Marie Cox, founder of Wonkette and host of the podcast, “With Friends Like These” from Crooked Media, as well as and David Larson, a professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. Guests:  Ana Marie Cox is the founder of Wonkette and the host of the podcast, “With Friends Like These” from Crooked Media. She teaches in the Media and Cultural Studies Department of Macalester College. David Larson is a professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law

Ken Layne is the creator of Desert Oracle, a magazine and radio show/podcast all about the strange inhabitants and culture of the Mojave Desert. Layne’s trajectory through the world of alternative media winds through the 1990s and 2000s, when he was present at the creation of the Gawker media empire and subsequently took the reins of their influential politics outlet Wonkette. In this conversation, we talk about the evolution of underground culture through layers of toxic capitalism, as we trace Layne’s path from the fast lane of LA/New York/DC digital media to the burgeoning psychedelic scene in the California desert.

Maya Contreras interviews political wonk Stephen Robinson. Stephan is a writer and social kibbitzer based in Portland, Oregon. He's on the board of the Portland Playhouse theater and writes for the immersive theater Cafe Nordo in Seattle. "Wonkette is an American online magazine of topical satire and political gossip, established in 2004 by Gawker Media and founding editor Ana Marie Cox. The editor since 2012 is Rebecca Schoenkopf, formerly of OC Weekly. Wonkette covers U.S. politics from Washington, D.C. to local schoolboards. Taking a sarcastic tone, the site focuses heavily on humorous breaking news, rumors, and the downfall of the powerful. It also deals with serious matters of politics and policy, producing in-depth analysis". Stephen is also a playwright. Last year, he cowrote the world premiere adaptation of Tom Robbin’s JITTERBUG PERFUME for the immersive theater, Cafe Nordo, in Seattle's Pioneer Square. He’s excited to collaborate again with co-artistic directors Erin Brindley and Terry Podgorski for CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER, a modern take on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass. This production is an ambitious multi-story, multi-room musical experience with a six-course tasting menu included with admission. Cafe Nordo is not just a great theatre space. It’s also one of Seattle’s best bars and restaurants all in one. He’s thrilled to add his own style of humor to an evening of eat mes and drink mes. The play runs from April 2 to May 31. In 1986 audiences were dazzled by Captain EO, Michael Jackson’s 3-D movie spectacular at Disney’s Epcot Center in Florida. In the short 17 minute film, Michael Jackson and his ragtag group of rebels face off against an evil monster played by Angelica Huston who gets transformed into an egalitarian happy queen through the power of love, music and rainbows.Maybe it’s a bit simplistic, but Michael Jackson’s Rainbow loving Captain might be just what we need today to melt the hearts of tyrants everywhere and change the world. Our guest today is writer Robyn Pennacchia who has her pulse on all the hot topics as writer for Wonkette and other major online news sites.Robyn thinks we’re going about it all the wrong way when it comes to sexual equality- while everyone is debating on wether Aziz Ansari is guilty of being a jerk, nobody’s asking why he never picked up on social cues in the first place.Today we’re tackling all the gloomy, scary, nasty news that’s dividing the world and throwing some old fashioned Captain EO rainbow magic to turn the borg queen into Angelica Huston. The Borg from Star Trek were totally ripped off of Captain Eo. In 1999, Broaddrick accused Bill Clinton of raping her in 1978 in her hotel room in Little Rock Arkansas. Not surprisingly, the mainstream-liberal feminist media responded with a deafening silence, which was shattered by Wonkette's Rebecca Schoenkopf. Schoenkopf, who is a Hillary Clinton supporter, was the only one not on the right wing to respond to the story and wound up issuing a bit of a rape apology. The same week that the Buzzfeed story came out, feminists were tweeting "believe women." But it wasn't in reference to Broaddrick. It was in reference to the women who had accused a New York comedian of raping them. Gabe talks about the rape controversy rocking the NYC comedy scene, Kurt Metzger and Amy Schumer.
