Henry S. Whitehead was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on March 5, 1882, and graduated from Harvard University in 1904 (in the same class as Franklin D. Roosevelt).[3] As a young man he led an active and worldly life in the first decade of the 20th century, playing football at Harvard University, editing a Reform democratic newspaper in Port Chester, New York, and serving as commissioner of athletics for the AAU.He later attended Berkeley Divinity School in Middletown, Connecticut, and in 1912 he was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church. During 1912-1913 he worked as a clergyman in Torrington, Connecticut. From 1913 to 1917 he served as rector in Christ's Church, Middletown, Connecticut.[2] From 1918 to 1919 he was Pastor of the Children, Church of St. Mary the Virgin, New York City.[2]He served as Archdeacon of the Virgin Islands from 1921 to 1929.[1] While there, living on the island of St. Croix, Whitehead gathered the material he was to use in his tales of the supernatural.[2] A correspondent and friend of H. P. Lovecraft, Whitehead published stories from 1924 onward in Adventure, Black Mask, Strange Tales,[3] and especially Weird Tales. In his introduction to the collection Jumbee, R. H. Barlow would later describe Whitehead as a member of "the serious Weird Tales school".[3] Many of Whitehead's stories are set on the Virgin Islands and draw on the history and folklore of the region. Several of these stories are narrated by Gerald Canevin, a New Englander living on the islands and a fictional stand-in for Whitehead.[2] Whitehead's supernatural fiction was partially modelled on the work of Edward Lucas White and William Hope Hodgson.[3] Whitehead's "The Great Circle" (1932) is a lost-race tale with sword and sorcery elements.[3]In later life, Whitehead lived in Dunedin, Florida, as rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd and a leader of a boys' group there. H. P. Lovecraft was a particular friend as well as a correspondent of Whitehead's, visiting him at his Dunedin home for several weeks in 1931. Lovecraft recorded in his letters that he entertained the boys with readings of his stories such as "The Cats of Ulthar". Lovecraft said of Whitehead: "He has nothing of the musty cleric about him; but dresses in sports clothes, swears like a he-man on occasion, and is an utter stranger to bigotry or priggishness of any sort."Whitehead suffered from a long-term gastric problem, but an account of his death by his assistant suggests he died from a fall or a stroke or both.[1] He died late in 1932, but few of his readers learned about this until an announcement and brief profile, by H. P. Lovecraft, appeared in the March 1933 Weird Tales, issued in Feb 1933. Whitehead was greatly mourned and missed by lovers of weird fiction at his death.[4]R. H. Barlow collected many of Whitehead's letters, planning to publish a volume of them; but this never appeared, although Barlow did contribute the introduction to Whitehead's Jumbee and Other Uncanny Tales (1944).

In this episode Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Sally Gaze. Sally is a creative leader in the midst of a church shaped by tradition, wrestling with the question of how to discern God's directions, particularly in the rural context. Sally describes how forms of mission-shaped life are emerging in the Suffolk countryside. Working with small groups of faithful Christians who are finding creative ways to connect deeply in their local communities, she is inspired by the natural rhythms and practices of farming and gardening, sensing that God is calling the rural church to go with the grain of the natural world.Sally is an Anglican priest, Archdeacon for Rural Mission in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Over the last six years, Sally has been Director of the Growing God in the Countryside project, funded by the Church of England Church Commissioners. As part of that she has helped to bring about the Lightwave Community, a charity that fosters small missional groups in rural areas. Over these years Sally has creatively engaged rural parishes in developing mission-shaped ministries. Formerly, Sally was Fresh Expressions Facilitator for the Diocese of Norwich and, in 2017, Dean for Rural Mission Consultancy in St Edmundsbury.LINKSFor Sally Gaze:Mission-shaped and Rural Growing Churches in the Countryside by Sally Gaze and Graham JamesCanon Gaze appointed first Archdeacon for Rural MissionInstallation of Sally Gaze as Archdeacon of Missionhttp://www.lightwave.communityFor Alan J Roxburgh:http://alanroxburgh.com/abouthttps://www.themissionalnetwork.com/author/alan-roxburgh/https://journalofmissionalpractice.com/alan-roxburghTwitter: https://twitter.com/alanjroxburgh?lang=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alan.roxburgh.127/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecommonsnetworkJoining God in the Great UnravelingLeadership, God's Agency and DisruptionsJoining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World: The New Shape of the Church in Our TimeFor Jenny Sinclair:Website: https://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/from-jenny-sinclairLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenny-sinclair-0589783b/Twitter: https://twitter.com/T4CGFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TogetherForTheCommonGoodUKInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/t4cg_insta/ Get full access to Leaving Egypt at leavingegyptpodcast.substack.com/subscribe
The life of this week's final Scriblerian, Thomas Parnell, rounds out the picture of the entire Scriblerus club as a fraternity of wildly brilliant men all carrying some great pain or wound. Some of them clearly write out of that wound, while others seem to write in spite of it. Parnell straddles the line, and today's poem is a fine example of his blending of bright energy with a sharp edge. Happy reading.Thomas Parnell (11 September 1679 – 24 October 1718) was an Anglo-Irish poet and clergyman who was a friend of both Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. He was born in Dublin, the eldest son of Thomas Parnell (died 1685) of Maryborough, Queen's County (now Portlaoise, County Laois), a prosperous landowner who had been a loyal supporter of Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War and moved from Congleton, Cheshire to Ireland after the Restoration of Charles II. His mother was Anne Grice of Kilosty, County Tipperary: she also owned property in County Armagh, which she left to Thomas at her death in 1709. His parents married in Dublin in 1674. Thomas was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and collated as Archdeacon of Clogher in 1705. In the last years of the reign of Queen Anne of England he was a popular preacher, but her death put an end to his hope of career advancement. He married Anne (Nancy) Minchin, daughter of Thomas Minchin, who died in 1712, and had three children, two of whom died young. The third child, a girl, is said to have reached a great age. The marriage was a very happy one, and it has been said that Thomas never recovered from Nancy's early death. He spent much of his time in London, where he participated with Pope, Swift and others in the Scriblerus Club, contributing to The Spectator and aiding Pope in his translation of The Iliad. He was also one of the so-called "Graveyard poets": his 'A Night-Piece on Death,' widely considered the first "Graveyard School" poem, was published posthumously in Poems on Several Occasions, collected and edited by Alexander Pope and is thought by some scholars to have been published in December 1721. It is said of his poetry, "it was in keeping with his character, easy and pleasing, enunciating the common places with felicity and grace."-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. He was born in Rome to a wealthy senatorial family. He received a good education in secular and spiritual learning, and became Prefect of Rome. While still in the world, he used his great wealth mostly for the good of the Church, building six monasteries in Sicily and another in Rome itself. At this monastery, dedicated to the Apostle Andrew, Gregory was tonsured a monk. He was appointed Archdeacon of Rome, then, in 579, Papal legate to Constantinople, where he lived for nearly seven years. He returned to Rome in 585 and was elected Pope in 590. He is famed for his many writings, his generous charity (he gave almost all his income to the poor, and often invited the poor to share his table), and for initiating missionary work among the Anglo-Saxon peoples. The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, celebrated on Wednesday and Friday evenings during Great Lent, was compiled by him. St Gregory introduced elements of the chanting that he had heard in Constantinople into Western Church chant: The Gregorian Chant which beautified the Western churches for many years is named for him. Its system of modes is related to the eight tones of the Eastern church. He is called 'the Dialogist' after his book The Dialogues, an account of the lives and miracles of Italian saints. Saint Gregory reposed in peace in 604.

A kinsman of the Apostle Paul, the Holy Stephen was one of the seven deacons (with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas) first appointed by the Church to minister to the people; and it pleased God to receive him as the Church's first Martyr for Christ. Read the long, beautiful and edifying account of his witness in the Acts of the Apostles, chapters 6-8. When Stephen, "full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people," (Acts 6:8), some members of a synagogue in Jerusalem came to dispute with him and, enraged by his proclamation of Christ, stoned him to death. In his death St Stephen revealed Christ's erasure of the boundary between heaven and earth, and the new communion between man and God: his face shone with the light of the Transfiguration, and he was granted a vision of Christ enthroned at the Father's right hand. His dying words were "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge" (Acts 7:60). According to holy tradition, the martyrdom of St Stephen occurred exactly a year after the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. His body was taken and secretly buried by Gamaliel, a member of the Sanhendrin and secretly a Christian. Saint Stephen's relics were discovered by the priest Lucian in 415 following a vision. They were translated to the church built for them in Jerusalem by the Empress Eudocia, and later taken to Constantinople. The Saint's missionary speech before his death (like that of the deacon St Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch) reminds us that those appointed to serve the Church materially are not barred, or even excused, from proclaiming the glorious Gospel of Christ.

This is episode 200 - we have reached the double century milestone on our winding journey through the past. When I began the series in 2021 after some years of planning, I had no idea what would happen. Diving into the shark tank that is history podcasting took a great deal of forethought. One person's history is another persons' propaganda after all, social engineers rewrite the past to suit their own agenda's and this series has been based on our people's stories first. Endeavouring to let the folks of the south talk for themselves, which of course, can threaten folks' world view about their origins, or their personal narrative. It is rife with risk. So it's with some relief to report that the response has been overwhelmingly positive. This series is now the third most shared podcast in South Africa — a stunning revelation given that I am doing this solo. There is no marketing team, no financier, no patron, just me and you the listener. Thanks to Francois at iono.fm for the growth in advertising, nothing for mahala I guess. Speaking of filthy lucre, I have a PayPal account for donations which can be found on desmondlatham.blog. The funds go towards the series audio hosting fees. The third video episode is about to land on YouTube, so things are happening. With that craven bit of begging, let us continue for we are going to spend this episode meeting Cape Governor, Sir George Grey. He is probably the most influential Englishman in both New Zealand and South Africa's history, playing a key role in the annexation of Maori land, he spent time as a Governor of Australia. Very much an administrator of his time, he believed in educating the masses, and put his money where his mouth was, founding Grey's College in Bloemfontein in 1855, then Grey's High School in Gbeberha a year later. In between, all manner of shenanigans were recorded. But wait. As we hear about Sir George, I'll introduce his amaxhosa alter ego, Manhlakaza, aka Wilhelm Goliath, who was the first amaXhosa Anglican in South Africa. Manhlakaza's relationship with the Archdeacon of Grahamstown, Nathanial James Merriman, was going to change the whole course of South Africa's history. Don't take my word for it, this is the view of many who know much more than me about these things, particularly the fantastic historian Jeff Peires. Here were two people, opposites. Grey and Goliath. Their tale is tantamount to the gears of history turning like a great, soot-streaked clockwork, steam-punk cogs groaning under the weight of human ambition and magical ether, while the past, a fog of coal-smoke and brass, hisses and sputters, propelling the unwieldy engine unsteadily into the unknown. The allegorical story this episode contains metaphors and illustrations of an era. Grey believed white and black people were essentially the same, it was only culture and backward rituals that separated the races. Grey wrote regularly about how aborigines and later amaXhosa “…are as apt and intelligent as any other race of men I am acquainted with…” “They are subject to the same affections, appetites and passions as other men…” Simply put, he thought that the Aborigines, the Maoris, the First People's of Canada, the Khoekhoe, the Nguni and Tswana speaking south Africans, all wanted to become Englishmen but couldn't because they were trapped by the barbarous customs and rituals enforced by their older generation. At the same time, the colonial in him believed that no Aborigine, or Maori or African culture, was worth the grand heights of English culture. Still, that didn't stop him personally conducting a major contribution study of the Maori language and folklore. That study is regarded one of the most important research into early Maori ways — a contradiction considering that he didn't hold the Maori ways in high regard. What a strange character.

That study is regarded one of the most important research into early Maori ways — a contradiction considering that he didn't hold the Maori ways in high regard. What a strange character.

What were the world's ancestral stories before they became viewed as fiction and fable? What was the Bible before it became a book about God? And if the Bible was not about God, what was it our ancestors wanted us to know? The Eden Conspiracy reveals evidence of ancient ET contact in the Bible's deep past, along with forgotten secrets about human progress, political power, emotional intelligence and human potential. This book will take you around the world from Australia to Brazil, Guatemala, Ghana, Kenya, Italy, Scotland, England, Israel, Palestine, and ancient Sumeria. The Eden Conspiracy visits archeological sites in the Levant which hold clues of ancient experiences of close encounters, and sits at the feet of world-class scholars and senior figures in military intelligence, whose privileged information concerns the hidden layers of covert government in the deep past and in the present day.The Eden Conspiracy reveals how we can recover our ancestors' wisdom and build a better future. It lifts the lid on why this layer of information was edited and translated out of the Bible? Who made these changes, how, when, and with what agenda? And what does any of this have to do with ETs?Paul Anthony Wallis is an internationally Bestselling Author, whose books probe the world's ancestral narratives for their insight into human origins, human potential and our place in the cosmos. As a Senior Churchman, Paul served for 33 years as a Church Doctor, a Theological Educator, and an Archdeacon in the Anglican Church in Australia. George Noory hailed Paul's 2020 book "ESCAPING FROM EDEN" as "This generation's 'Chariots of the Gods!'" propelling Paul onto the international stage as the go-to-guy in the field of paleocontact. The 2021 sequel "THE SCARS OF EDEN" was endorsed by the legendary Erich Von Daniken, followed up in 2022 by "ECHOES OF EDEN" and in 2023 by "THE EDEN CONSPIRACY," both endorsed by George Noory. 2024 sees the release of "THE INVASION OF EDEN," endorsed by Laura Eisenhower.Paul's interviews and documentaries on the Paul Wallis Channel and The 5th Kind and El Quinto Tipo are watched by millions worldwide.https://paulanthonywallis.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/earth-ancients--2790919/support.
Another classic from the vaults. Original description: This week, we're covering Part III of Charles Williams' supernatural thriller, War in Heaven, in which the good guys (The Archdeacon, Kenneth Mornington, and the Duke) steal the Graal back from Gregory Persimmons, who desires to use it for his own dark purposes. They then must pray to prevent the Graal from being magically disintegrated from a long distance by Manasseh and Dmitri, two more advanced members of Gregory's shady organization. We'll also witness a friendship blossoming between all three of our protagonists, talk about how holy and unholy detachment can help make for a very exciting* plot, throw a little shade at King Henry VIII, discuss pagan interpretations of the Graal, and speculate about how P.G. Wodehouse may have been the secret ingredient in Gregory's eventual redemption. This conversation went well over an hour--if you simply can't get enough of Charles Williams, you're in for a treat. And hang around (if you'd like) for some bonus material at the very end--should be worth a laugh or two. I mean, we laugh, anyway. Music from Lohengrin by Wagner, Mercury by Holst, Venus by Holst, and, of course, "Take the Land," by Don Potter. We reference William Blake's poem, "And did those feet in ancient time," which speculates on the very strange legend that the boy Jesus may have been taken to England by Joseph of Arimathea at some point--presumably a pre-Graal excursion for Joseph (I don't think even Blake believed this, though). "And did those feet" was set to music by Sir Hubert Parry as "Jerusalem," an anthem/hymn that helped revive the drooping nationalism of British troops during World War I and remains popular to this day. If you haven't read any of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster series, we encourage you to drop everything and do so as soon as possible. Finally, this podcast will probably be more fun for you if you read along with us. Feel free to pick up a copy of Charles Williams' War in Heaven! If you're enjoying these episodes and have constructive feedback, we'd love to hear from you! Our email is InklingsVarietyHour@gmail.com. Feel free also to leave us a review on iTunes if you want to see more of this sort of thing.
Another dip back into the old vaults for the second episode covering War in Heaven. Original shownotes: We begin this second part of our series on War in Heaven with the Archdeacon's words to the Holy Graal (yes, that's how it's spelled). We end as a Georgia thunderstorm knocks out the Internet. In between, we discuss Chapters 4-8 of Charles Williams' supernatural thriller. You can find War in Heaven here. It is pretty inexpensive to buy on Kindle ($0.99 the last I checked). Other than the usual Lohengrin/Jazz mash-up, the music used is from Uranus, one of the pieces in Gustav Holst's Planets suite. The poetry excerpt at the end is from "On the Circuit," by W.H. Auden (read by the author). Stay tuned for Part 3 next week! If you're enjoying these episodes and have constructive feedback, we'd love to hear from you! Our email is InklingsVarietyHour@gmail.com. Feel free also to leave us a review on iTunes if you want to see more of this sort of thing.

Paul Wallis has traveled the world to find evidence for his startling claim that extraterrestrial visitors invaded the Earth and carved it up into different fiefdoms where their human subjects were used as proxies in wars against one another. He says that while some of the off-world visitors were benign and tried to uplift humans with advanced technologies, art, and literature, others were bent on world domination and ruthlessly invaded the fiefdoms of their peers and rivals. Most disturbingly, Wallis claims that evidence of these invasions continues to the modern day and explains much of the war, poverty and misery happening around the world is a result of ruthless off-world visitors manipulating human elites behind the scenes to continue their proxy wars against one another. Wallis presents evidence for ancient alien invasions and why this continues to the modern era in The Invasion of Eden which is Book 5 of his best-selling Eden series. Wallis served for 33 years as a Church Doctor, Theological Educator, and an Archdeacon in the Anglican Church in Australia, is an expert on the Christian and Hebrew Bibles, and has also interviewed multiple archeological experts in his 5th Kind TV series. "This Saint, who was born in Spain, was the Archdeacon of the Church of Rome, caring for the sacred vessels of the Church and distributing money to the needy. About the year 257, a harsh persecution was raised up against the Christians by Valerian. Pope Sixtus, who was from Athens, was commanded to worship the idols, and refused; before his martyrdom by beheading, he committed to Laurence all the sacred vessels of the Church. When Laurence was arrested and brought before the Prefect, he was questioned concerning the treasures of the Church; he asked for three days' time to prepare them. He then proceeded to gather all the poor and needy, and presented them to the Prefect and said, "Behold the treasures of the Church." The Prefect became enraged at this and gave command that Laurence be racked, then scourged with scorpions (a whip furnished with sharp iron points — compare II Chron. 10:11), then stretched out on a red-hot iron grill. But the courageous athlete of Christ endured without groaning. After he had been burned on one side, he said, "My body is done on one side; turn me over on the other." And when this had taken place, the Martyr said to the tyrants, "My flesh is now well done, you may taste of it." And when he had said this, and had prayed for his slayers in imitation of Christ, he gave up his spirit on August 10, 258." (Great Horologion). His icon shows him stretched on the grill.

An interview with Colin Archdeacon, director of CTRL+ALT+DESIRE, a Paramount+ true-crime docuseries that explores the impact of virtual “para-social” relationships on real-world actions and the fine line between online fantasy and reality. The three-episode series explores Archdeacon's four-year investigation into the chilling case of Grant Amato, a 29-year-old Florida man accused of murdering his own family for the love of a cam girl. With unprecedented access to Amato on camera from a cell phone that he (Amato) had smuggled into prison, Archdeacon follows clues scattered across Florida, Eastern Europe and the dark corners of the online world to uncover a world of fantasy so complex that the real world slipped away. Archdeacon Andrew Brashier interviews Archdeacon Andrew Hayler about the season of Lent.

This weekend the Right Reverend Dorrien Davies has been enthroned as the 130th Bishop of St Davids in a cathedral which is the mother church of a large diocese covering the west Wales counties of Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. It's a part of Wales that Bishop Dorrien knows well – having studied at Lampeter, served as a curate in Llanelli and subsequently as parish priest in Llanfihangel Ystrad Aeron and at St Dogmaels before being made a Residentiary Canon at St Davids Cathedral in 2010. Five years ago he was appointed to a senior role as Archdeacon of Carmarthen; he's well-known and popular in the diocese. He succeeds the Rt Revd Joanna Penberthy who retired last year following a lengthy period of sick leave. Her time in office wasn't without controversy following a tweet for which she subsequently apologised in which she said “Never, never, never trust a Tory.” Bishop Dorrien was born and brought up in Abergwili near Carmarthen which is also where Llys Esgob – the Bishop's Palace – is situated. That's where Jonathan Thomas recorded a conversation earlier this week, covering a wide-range of topics and issues including climate change, historic churches, the management of differing opinions over same-sex blessings and the role of the Church in an election year. He also recalls growing up in the shadow of the Bishop's Palace in Abergwili, and his consecration service as a bishop in Bangor Cathedral last weekend.
