Golf has long been the most popular pastime of professional jockeys. Some have attained a very high level in the sport, others are happy to “puddle” around once or twice a week with a few mates. Highly respected southern districts jockey Richard Bensley has come up with a recreation far removed from conventional sports. Thanks to the influence of his late father Bryson, Richard is a master exponent of the ancient art of carriage driving. He frequently jumps into a sparkling old world buggy drawn by a high stepping Hackney and competes at the highest level. He's also ridden more than 900 winners in a successful 25 year career mostly on southern district tracks. Richard Bensley is a podcast guest with a difference. He talks firstly about a promising mare he's been riding just lately for Goulburn trainer Patrick Murphy. He acknowledges the talents of former jockey Pat Murphy. Richard talks about the equine skills of his late father Bryson, his father-in-law Rick Jones and late mother Joanne who was also a noted horsewoman.  The successful jockey talks about his Goulburn property and the large number of horse drawn vehicles tucked away in a shed. One of those vehicles is a century old hearse.  He talks about the never ending work involved in maintaining leather harness and brass fittings. Richard talks about the English bred Hackney, the horse most commonly used in carriage driving around the world. The breed is diminishing but the jockey does his bit to help save the species. He pays tribute to wife Melissa, son Mitchell and daughter Chelsea. Richard remembers the occasion when breeder Peter Stewart told Bryson that his son's feet were too big for him to even consider becoming a jockey.  He recalls a chance conversation his father had with trainer Ken Callaughan who'd only just moved to the new Goulburn training complex. That conversation changed Richard's life. The jockey hasn't forgotten Callaughan's all round horsemanship skills. He remembers his hometrack debut on a Callaughan runner in 2000, and the thrill of his first win at Cootamundra. Richard says it took him a long time to ride a city winner. He acknowledges his successful association with trainer Nick Olive for whom he rode more than one hundred winners. Richard looks back on some of the nice horses he got to ride for the Olive stable. The jockey looks back with delight on a Black Opal Stakes win for old friend trainer Gratz Vella. He takes us through his win on You're Canny. Richard expresses his appreciation of the staunch support he had from the Vella stable. He looks back on a winning association with Loved Up, a talented mare from the Brett Cavanough yard.  Richard remembers a black type win on Loved Up in the Scone Guineas and the unlikely circumstances that brought him a second stakes win on the same day. The forty two year old speaks highly of The Monstar, another talented horse from the Brett Cavanough stable. He got to ride the sprinter in a couple of high quality races in Melbourne. Richard names a handful of outstanding country jockeys for whom he's had high regard throughout his career. He looks back on a second placing in a Rosehill TAB Highway destined to be promoted by default. Richard confirms that retirement is not yet on the radar. That applies to race riding and carriage driving.

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Foundations of Amateur Radio Recently Glynn VK6PAW and I had the opportunity to play radio. This isn't something that happens often so we try to make the most of it. For our efforts we had plenty of frustrations, to the point where we were joking that I should rename this to "Frustrations of Amateur Radio". That was until we heard something weird on-air. All setup shenanigans forgotten, we marvelled at the experience. I was playing around on the 10m band, trying to hear people making noise and potentially our first contact for the field day we were participating in, when I heard something odd. Two stations talking to each other, but the audio was strange. It was like they were doubling up, the same audio played a fraction of a second later, until that moment, something I've only ever heard in a radio studio whilst editing using a reel-to-reel tape machine with separate recording and playback heads. Having just started using a digital only radio, at first I thought this was an artefact of the radio. I took note of the frequency, 28.460 MHz and told Glynn about it. After we moved the telescopic vertical antenna to the analogue radio, we discovered that this was in fact real, not caused by the radios, no doubt a relief to the proud owner of both radios, Glynn, who was thinking more clearly than I. He took note of the callsigns, Dom VK2HJ and Yukiharu JE1CSW. Looking back now, an audio recording would have been helpful. At the time I suggested that this might be a case of long path and short path signals arriving at our station and being able to hear both. If you're not sure what that means, when you transmit, an antenna essentially radiates in all directions and signals travel all over the globe. Some head directly towards your destination, the short path, others head in exactly the opposite direction, taking the long way around Earth, the long path. You might think that the majority of contacts are made using the short path, but it regularly happens the other way around, where the long path is heard and the short path is not. As you might know, radio waves essentially bounce up and down between the ionosphere and Earth and it might happen that the signal arrives at the destination antenna, or it might happen that it bounces right over the top, making either short path or long path heard, or not. In this case, both arrived clearly audible. It wasn't until I sat down on the couch afterwards with a calculator that I was able to at least prove to my own satisfaction that this is what we heard. So, what were those calculations and what was the delay? The circumference of Earth is roughly 40,000 km. RF propagation travels at the speed of light, or about 300,000 km/s. It takes about 0.13 seconds or 130 milliseconds for a radio signal to travel around Earth. At this point you might realise that 40,000 km is measured at the surface, but ionospheric propagation happens in the ionosphere, making the circumference at the very top of the ionosphere about 45,000 km, which would take 150 ms. There are several things that need to line up for this all to work. Propagation aside, the distance between all three stations needs to be such that the number of hops between each combination is a whole number so we can all hear each other. As it happens, the distance between Perth in Western Australia and Maebashi City in Japan is pretty close to the distance between Goulburn in New South Wales and Japan, and the distance between Goulburn and Perth is roughly half that. Using back of napkin trigonometry, it appears that 27 hops around the planet are required to make this happen. That's five hops between Perth and Japan, and between Goulburn and Japan, and two hops between Goulburn and Perth, and 27 hops between Perth and Japan the long way around. Given that the F2 layer where the 10m signal is refracted exists between about 220 km and 800 km, we can estimate that the total delay for the long path is at least 144 ms. That doesn't really translate into anything you might relate to, but at 8 wpm a Morse code dit takes 150 milliseconds, which gives you a sense of how long the echo delay is. In other words, it's something that you can absolutely hear without needing to measure it. There are other implications. WSPR signals are used to test weak signal propagation. Stations around the globe report on what they can hear and when. For this to work, the signal need to be synchronised, something which is commonly implemented using something called NTP, or Network Time Protocol. It can achieve a time accuracy of 10 ms. GPS locked WSPR beacons can achieve an accuracy of 40 nanoseconds. In other words, if we know that the beacon and the receiver are time synchronised, we can probably detect if the signal arrived using a short path or a long path. The WSPR decoder tracks the time between when the signal arrived and 2 seconds past an even minute as perceived by the receiver. Gwyn G3ZIL wrote an interesting document called "Timescale wsprdaemon database queries V2" on the subject of the data format used by wsprdaemon, a tool used to analyse WSPR beacon transmissions. If this is something you want to play with, check out wsprdaemon.org From our adventures there was plenty to take away. Stay curious, go portable, take notes, practice putting up an antenna, keep a log, laugh and have fun, and last but not least, get on air and make noise. Before I forget, make sure your mate brings a pen for logging when your own trusty scribble stick suddenly gives up the ghost for no apparent reason. I knew there was a reason I prefer pencils. The Regional New South Wales market overall is solid, without excelling at the levels seen in other regional areas like Queensland and Western Australia, but with individual out-performers. There is hesitancy in the Regional NSW market overall. It has a high number of locations where buyer activity is lukewarm and price performance below the levels seen elsewhere in the nation. It's noteworthy, however, that Regional NSW has seen better performance in its unit markets than its house markets, which is part of a national trend. Overall sales levels have improved, continuing a pattern of recovery over the past year, but remain well below the peak levels of 2021. Regional NSW saw a major decline in its market in 2022 and early 2023, with signs of gradual revival seen since mid-2023. Amid this overall patchy performance, there are some standout growth markets, based on individual Local Government Areas including those in the Wollongong, Newcastle and Albury regions. The Wollongong region continues to be a state-leading star. The City of Wollongong LGA has an above-average number of rising locations and the nearby Shoalhaven LGA continues to thrive: quarterly sales over the past 18 months have been rising steadily, showing one of the best patterns of growth in the nation. The Shellharbour area is also part of this region's growth. Newcastle remains an outstanding market and neighbouring LGAs including Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley municipalities all have busy markets. The Mid Coast LGA has delivered steady increases in market activity over the past year, quarter by quarter. Both Forster and Tuncurry have rising markets and Taree is highly consistent. While those markets are heading into over-drive, some of the high-profile regions of NSW have not yet got out of second gear.  The Central Coast still has a degree of uncertainty; Byron Bay is showing signs of recovery, after a high peak in 2021 and a deep post-boom trough in 2022 and 2023, but remains well peak the 2021 boom levels; and both Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie have had patchy results over the past year, with indications of recovery in the latest quarter. The Tweed LGA is showing signs of joining the boom experienced north of the border in the Gold Coast region, without yet being fully on board. Elsewhere in Regional NSW, Dubbo, Wellington, Orange, Gunnedah, Inverell and Tenterfield are classified as rising markets; Goulburn and Mudgee are rated as recovery markets; and Armidale, Glen Innes and Parkes stand out for consistent sales activity.

Ken talks about the horse transport business he launched after quitting the training ranks.  He says much of his work is generated by Goulburn trainers who like to run horses in the weekly TAB Highway races. Ken talks about his early years in the tiny village of Delegate near the Victorian border. He says his father George was a tough taskmaster when giving his son riding tuition. Ken pays tribute to his late brother Brian. He looks back on his first trip to an Inglis Tried Horse Sale. He came away with the unraced gelding who would launch his training career. Ken acknowledges some of his very early winners. He remembers Stormy Guest who was showing great promise before he suffered a career ending injury in a track gallop. At this point of the interview Ken pays a heartfelt tribute to former outstanding jockey Don Terry whose career was terminated by a Grafton race fall more than twenty years ago. They are still in regular contact. The former trainer looks back on his years at Capricorn Park, a 500 acre property near Canberra from which he trained many winners. All of his trackwork was done at home. For many years Ken combined horse training with the breaking of yearlings. One of his regular clients was owner/breeder Sandy Tait. He talks of the Nassipour colt who gave him many a headache during the breaking in process. He acknowledges the talents of some of the best horses he got to train in a forty year career. Ken talks of the well known horsemen to come through the system at Capricorn Park. He says wife Margaret was an outstanding trackwork rider in the early days of his training career. He makes special mention of daughter Fiona and son Peter. Fiona does most of the driving in his transport business. A special group of country horse trainers have gained legendary status in NSW racing. Ken Callaughan is one of them.

This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 9th of May and here are today's headlines.A day after announcing that he would back the Opposition Congress against the BJP government in Haryana, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala announced today that he has written to Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya seeking a floor test in the Assembly. The Congress followed suit by seeking an appointment with the governor on May 10 to “present a memorandum regarding the present political situation in the state”. Meanwhile, Congress Legislature Party leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda replied to Chautala's statement, quote “All our 30 MLAs are intact, but the issue is that his [Dushyant's] MLAs are running here and there. First, he should analyse if he has all his MLAs intact…it would have been better if Dushyant had paraded all his MLAs in front of the governor. Unquote. As Air India Express faces cancellation of 74 of its flights owing to an ongoing protest by a section of its cabin crew, Air India has stepped in to aid passengers facing disruptions, stating that it will run flights on 20 of its subsidiary's routes. The airline released in a press release, quote, “We will be operating 283 flights today. We have mobilised all resources and Air India will support us by operating on 20 of our routes. However, 85 of our flights are cancelled and we urge our guests booked to fly with us to check if their flight is affected by the disruption before heading to the airport,” Unquote. The Enforcement Directorate filed an affidavit in Supreme Court opposing interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today. 'Right to campaign in polls is neither fundamental nor constitutional,' ED told the Supreme Court and also said that no political leader was ever granted interim bail for his own campaigning if in custody. Earlier today the Supreme Court said that it may pass an order on Friday on whether or not to grant interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the excise policy scam case.A 26-year-old Indian student has been reported missing in Chicago since May 2, India's mission in the US city. It is the latest case in the country as the community grapples with a string of such incidents involving students. Rupesh Chandra Chintakindi has been missing from the 4300 block of N. Sheridan Rd, the Chicago Police said in a statement. The Consulate General of India in Chicago said it was in touch with the police and Indian diaspora to locate/reestablish contact with Rupesh. Two Indian-origin brothers wanted in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old MTech student from India have been arrested by Australian police. Abhijeet and Robin Gartan were arrested in the New South Wales country town of Goulburn police are preparing to extradite them to Victoria reportedly. The brothers were on the run since the early hours of Sunday after Navjeet Sandhu from Noble Park was killed and a 30-year-old man, also from Noble Park, was injured at an Ormond home in Melbourne's southeast. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Shaun Guymer made the decision a few seasons back to  follow in the footsteps of Sydney based jockeys like Grant Buckley and Jeff Penza who've enjoyed fruitful careers away from the metropolitan area. Like Penza and Buckley, Shaun sees more sense in having five or six rides on a southern districts track than pushing a 100/1 “pop”around in town. The popular jockey talks about his current workload and his acceptance of the endless travel required to meet “bush” commitments. He talks about the predicament of having offers at two meetings on the same day. Shaun says he agonises over the offer of a good ride in town from time to time. He hates to disappoint regular clients in the bush. He talks about distances to his usual venues. The jockey pays tribute to Jeff Penza and Grant Buckley. He greatly admires the longtime dedication of the veterans. Shaun says his family background is devoid of racing. He talks of his father's glazing business, and the support of his mother and sibling Josh. The jockey looks back on his initial work experience with top Goulburn horseman Danny Williams. He was later apprenticed to Williams. Shaun looks back on a transfer of his indentures to Canberra trainer Mark Schmetzer who became a valued friend and tutor. He's never forgotten his very first race ride. The horse was trained by Keith Dryden but failed to flatter at any stage. Shaun's first winning ride at Queanbeyan remains etched in his memory. The horse was trained by Rex Cole. Guymer had a long wait before his first city winner came along. The horse was trained by Jarrod Austin and started at cricket score odds.   He's very proud of a Canberra apprentices premiership.   Shaun looks back on a three month loan out to Randwick trainer Kevin Moses. He says Moses rode work with him most mornings.   He says he thoroughly enjoyed his time with Stephen Farley at Wyong.   The 31 year old looks back on a brief association with Chris Waller who utilised his claim on a couple of talented horses.   Shaun remembers with gratitude a valuable stint with Peter Moody not long after Black Caviar had departed the stable.   He's never forgotten a Caulfield win on a smart Moody trained mare.   The jockey looks back on a bout of depression after completing his apprenticeship. He lost his way as the opportunities diminished, but found a way to get back on track.   He talks admiringly of his wife Emma, daughter of Hawkesbury trainer Tim Walsh.   Shaun was gobsmacked when offered an opportunity by high profile trainer Tony McEvoy who had opened a satellite stable at Hawkesbury. He speaks highly of the multiple Group 1 winning trainer.   He talks of a move to the former Lindsay Park in South Australia when McEvoy's Sydney base was closed.   Shaun has nothing but fond memories of his association with Richard Freedman who'd made the decision to train in his own right at Rosehill. They won numerous races together.   The jockey looks back on a freakish incident at Nowra in 2018. His mount Ahmad literally got off the ground to win a BM 58. The footage went viral on social media.   He talks of a Wagga Guineas win on Lion's Roar beating a future Kosciuszko winner.    Shaun expresses appreciation for the support he receives from trainers in the southern region. He makes special mention of Natalie Jarvis.   He talks of a rare trip he made recently to Newcastle. It was worth the trouble.   Shaun says Emma closely watches his rides on the Sky service.   You can hear the “proud dad” element as he talks about three and a half year old son Fletcher.   It's a laid back chat with a very talented jockey who drives thousands of kilometres to ply his trade.

Welcome to Season 4! To begin we have a special episode to mark Mother's Day in Australia, and many other countries including most of Europe, Canada, Brazil, China and Japan. I am thrilled to welcome two creative mothers, Mary Sotiropoulos + Jessie Ann Elliot,Mary grew up in Sydney + moved to Goulburn almost 5 years ago, and she's a mum of a 3 year old daughter. Mary went from being a Full Time teacher to a Writer, Community Builder and Unschooling Guide.Jessie has been a Hunter Valley local (NSW) for most of her life, except for a tiny quarter life crisis year in Scotland at the age of 23. She's a mum of 2 children, a boy and a girl. Jessie went from a Full time Community Planner in Local Government to a Writer, Creator, Photographer, Holistic Counsellor, Meditation Therapist and Women's Circle Facilitator. and they have collaborated to write the book "The Mum Who Found Her Sparkle."Jessie and Mary started out as online friends, meeting in a membership facilitated by Motherhood Studies Sociologist Dr Sophie Brock. (a previous guest of the podcast) In this group they learnt not only about Matrescence, but how Motherhood is socially constructed and how far removed the act of housework is from actual Mothering. The journeys to becoming Mothers saw both women completely re-evaluate how they viewed the world, There is no mistaking that our culture glorifies being able to ‘do it all' and that this significantly impacts on the wellbeing and mental health of Mothers and therefore families. The joy is often lost, the things that a women enjoyed pre-motherhood often put on the back burner, as she places others above her.In June 2022 Jessie had the idea to write a children's book aimed at mothers, that would explore the topic of this 'lost sparkle' that a mother can experience when she puts her needs last. The pair went on to create it in the early hours of the morning, late at night, in pockets of time between getting snacks for children or changing nappies. The story follows Te and Oscar as they support their Mum Amber, to find her Sparkle. It is a story of a Mum being just as worthy of her shiny-ness as her kids are, and everyone knowing about it. Within the story there are layers of meaning and they have intentionally designed many opportunities to spark purposeful conversation throughout its' pages. It is their hope that this book inspires not just kids, but parents to prioritise finding that lost Sparkle. The book will be available in the coming months.**This episode contains discussion around post natal depression and anxiety and birth trauma**Jessie and Mary - instagramPodcast - instagram / websiteIf today's episode is triggering for you in any way I encourage you to seek help from those around you, medical professionals or from resources on line. I was the first to report that Nan Li, Adam Goulburn, and Zavain Dar were setting out to create a venture capital firm back in August 2022. So when the trio finally announced their $350 million life sciences and technology-focused venture firm, called Dimension, I had to have them on the podcast. I wanted to hear why Goulburn and Dar, general partners at Lux Capital, and Li, a general partner at Obvious Ventures, decided to embark on the long, hard trek of building their own firm. The three investors have become true believers about the rapid developments happening at the intersection of life sciences and software. Software engineers have made their way into the drug development process and the laboratory wet bench. Li describes having a realization, “Wow, this seemingly small area that we used to cover when we were coming up in the industry together is now reorganizing the entire industry. And we're seeing signs of that everywhere.” He explained how the speed of lab experiments is opening the door for a bigger role for software in laboratory research.“Experiments are getting very high throughput. They're very cheap to run. And labs are generating data streams that look kind of like internet platform companies. There are certain biotechs that we work with, that generate more data per day than Twitter does,” Li said on the podcast. “And that's where data science and software must come in. It's really out of necessity. The way a modern lab works today looks nothing like 20 years ago.”So, at probably the worst time to raise a new venture capital firm in recent memory, the trio set out to build a new one. On the podcast, Li, Goulburn, and Dar tell me how they did it. I ask them what technologies they are most optimistic about in the life sciences. And I pester them about whether healthy billionaires are getting vastly better healthcare than the rest of us — or are they just driving themselves crazy with tests?Give it a listenRead the automated transcript Get full access to Newcomer at www.newcomer.co/subscribe

Gregory Andrews is a D'harawal man and was Australia's first-appointed Threatened Species Commissioner. He owns and manages Wombat Ridge Nature Reserve near Goulburn in NSW and is an Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Canberra's Institute for Applied Ecology. Grant spoke with Gregory about his project at Wombat Ridge, where he has placed a covenant over land he owns with his wife, and is managing for wildlife, in a way that uses time honoured and tested methods employed by the First Australians, for thousands of years. Gregory also shared how he is creating a garden for wildlife in the heart of Australia's capital city, Canberra, and of course, some of his thoughts on his time as the first Threatened Species Commissioner of Australia is included.
