The Minnesota Wild fell to 1-6-1 in their last 8 games after losing 4-3 to Philadelphia in Overtime at Xcel Energy Center on the front end of a back to back. The Wild carried a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period, on goals from Marcus Johansson, Matt Boldy and Ryan Hartman, but the Flyers scored 2 goals down the stretch to send the game to overtime. In OT, Joel Eriksson Ek was unable to score on a breakaway opportunity after the Wild killed off a penalty in the extra session and Joel Farabee scored the game winner for the Flyers. The Wild fell to 17-19-5 and face Arizona tomorrow at Xcel Energy Center. We start by discussing the current temperature of Bill Guerin's seat in light of all of the turmoil this season. Seth and Zach agree that while Guerin's seat may not be as warm now as many would think, the burner has definitely been turned on and if these issues persist and carry over into next season that may be enough to ensure he doesn't stick around to see the end of his vision play out. Seth and Zach also discuss when we can expect the Wild to legitimately contend, and both agree that it is most likely that 2026-27 starts the serious contention window, depending on if Kirill Kaprizov decides to re-sign in Minnesota. Seth and Zach finish by looking at the biggest needs for the Wild to turn them into true contenders, with Zach begging for the team to find a consistent direction forward as opposed to continually being stuck in the "muddy middle". The Minnesota Wild lost or the 6th time in their last 7 games as they were routed 7-2 by the Dallas Stars in Dallas in Jesper Wallstedt's NHL Debut. The Stars scored the first goal of the game in the first period on an unassisted goal by Joe Pavelski, and added two more in the second to lead 3-0. The Wild made it 3-1 in the 3rd on Matt Boldy's 14th goal of the season, but the Stars scored 2 straight to make it 5-1. Ryan Hartman scored his 12th of the season to make it 5-2, but the Stars added two more to cap the scoring. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 27 of 34 shots in his NHL debut, but was not given any help in front of him throughout the night. The Wild host Philadelphia on Friday for their next game. On today's episode of Locked on Wild, we discuss the two outcomes that are in play for the rest of the 2024 season: either fight back into the playoff conversation or consider this a season that won't result in a playoff appearance. We start with the potential for a "soft reset" in which the Wild look at this season as one where they won't be able to make it to the postseason. We discuss letting injuries fully heal as opposed to rushing players back and how the end of the season could be spun into a positive if young players continue to develop, as opposed to a year where "making the playoffs" as the ultimate goal didn't happen. The Minnesota Wild surrendered two shorthanded goals and a Power Play goal in a 4-0 loss to the Stars, and Matt Murray recorded his first NHL shutout in net for Dallas as the Wild lost for the 5th time in 6 games. The Wild trailed 1-0 after one period on a shorthanded goal by Roope Hintz. Tyler Seguin, Radek Faksa and Jason Robertson scored in the third period to back Murray, who only needed to make 10 saves the final two periods after stopping 13 in the first. The Minnesota Wild lost their 4th straight game as they fell to Tampa Bay 4-1 at Xcel Energy Center on Thursday night. The Wild fell behind 2-0 in the second period after a scoreless first, and fell behind 3-0 after another Tampa Bay goal in the third. The Wild cut it to 3-1 on a goal from Zach Bogosian, but the Lightning added an empty netter to finish the scoring and seal the win. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26 of 29 shots in the loss.
