Le groupe de death metal progressif et technique a rapidement forgé son nom sur la scène. Au point que les deux précédents disques, Rhizomes Of Insanity et The Impassable Horizon, sont sortis dans la prestigieuse écurie Metal Blade Records. Avec ce quatrième album, Fractal Universe veut poursuivre son univers conceptuel. Les riffs de death tech solides se mêlent aux réflexions philosophiques et au chatoyant saxophone. Fractal Universe n'a pas fini de porter le savoir-faire hexagonal hors de nos frontières. Le guitariste Yohan Dully sera dans notre entretien du lundi soir pour évoquer tout cela avec nous ! Pour lancer cette grande partie d'émission réservée à Fractal Universe, pourquoi ne pas commencer dans la même veine ? Le groupe américain ALLEGAEON présente son septième disque The Ossuary Lens, qui voit le retour d'Ezra Haynes au chant. Ce disque a deux faces, technico-brutal et plus progressif, confire que le groupe est toujours debout. La première demi-heure est aussi l'occasion de revenir sur le nouvel album d'une légende du death metal britannique, avec BENEDICTION. Ravage of Empires est sorti vendredi dernier, prouvant l'efficacité du groupe. Nous ferons aussi une petite escapade vers le black metal, avec un groupe grenoblois cette fois-ci. ALDAARON nous emmène par-delà les cimes avec son nouveau méfait.

La formation a par la suite évoluée dans d'autres directions, aussi bien plus heavy que vers une tendance extrême et un son brut. Très rapidement, Hexecutor s'est fait une solide réputation sur scène. Sa force est de parler aussi bien aux nostalgiques du thrash old school qu'aux amateurs de metal plus contemporain. Le troisième album continue d'explorer les sombres légendes et des figures de l'histoire celtique bretonne. Nous en discutons avec le chanteur guitariste Jey Deflagratör et le batteur Putrid Vön Rötten dans l'entretien du lundi soir ! Lors de la première demi-heure, nous évoquons trois sorties de la semaine passée. Focus d'abord sur les new-yorkais d'IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT. Le quatrième album InVictus est l'occasion pour le groupe d'explorer davantage ce qu'il a su créer. Son death metal puissant va toujours chercher plus loin en mélodie et en efficacité. InVictus propose des riffs mémorables qui sont taillés pour faire sensation sur scène. Naturellement, la charismatique chanteuse Auré franchit aussi un cap sur ce nouvel opus. InVictus va manier des émotions contradictoires et complexes. Puisant à la fois dans la douleur profonde, il va aussi être tiré par un brin de lumière avec l'espoir et le courage. CRUSH THE RATS est un condensé de violence qui puise principalement dans le grindcore, mais aussi le brutal death, la noise et le black metal. Ce premier EP Don't montre la couleur, en seulement seize minutes et très peu de secondes de respiration. Nous profitons de ce premier méfait pour discuter avec le musicien et l'ingé son sur l'ensemble de ses activités ! En première partie d'émission, nous évoquerons le deuxième album de CROSS BRINGER, formation avec des membres de PREDATORY VOID, REKA et HOARI. Don't let the name fool you, we haven't gotten into Female February just yet. Instead, after a delay we're wrapping up Black Metal January with the as of yet latest album from Phoenix based USBM band Abigail Williams, 2019's Walk Beyond the Dark!

The boys are barely keeping it together as the darkest month of the year grinds onward. Can they find some momentary respite with the beautiful work of Maine's own Falls of Rauros, specifically their 2011 album The Light That Dwells In Rotten Wood?

Black Metal January continues with a dive into the Blackgaze genre circa 2018, with the fantastic Jord by MØL!

A year ago, we started a series which, by its design, was hard to keep going so we were aware that there would be bigger gaps between the editions of this “series” but here we are now with its fourth installment - our “Bands interviewing Bands” - series. This time we have the pleasure of getting Aaron Charles and Jordan Guerette together, who play together in Falls of Rauros but who interviewed each other on their side projects - Aaron's Psychedelic Black Metal project Rhûn and Jordan's apocalyptic Chamber music ensemble Forêt Endormie. Of course, head honcho Thorsten also had a few questions for both guys but each came up with mighty cool questions for the FoR-bandmate. In our interview, we also talk about the importance of these projects for Falls itself, about Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time and about Stephen King, the literary icon of the guys' homestate, Maine. Enjoy the reviews on both outfits' recent releases as well as the interview! Many great albums take time to take shape and to see the light of day, and such is the case of Rhûn's Conveyance in Death. Not only does great music take time, but this album takes inspiration from things that are very relatable to the human condition: self-determination, solitude and ephemerality. It has many layers, blending of Black Metal with Death Metal and Psychedelia elements, that make this a great listen. Rhûn was born back in 2021 and was formed by Aaron Charles, one of the founding member of Falls of Rauros. The album came out after three years and also features Ray Capizzo on session drums. Conveyance in Death is a self-released album with six tracks and the physical copies are available by House of Inkantation. This album is very different from the Atmospheric Black Metal elements that can be found in Falls of Rauros, but has its own unique sound, making this a different entity that takes various elements that give this album very distinctive and unique layers. The opening track “Morningstar” has an eerie start, giving the listener goosebumps before the drums and the voice, which sounds like a call from the grave, breaks that slow groovy start. The raw sound will be something that will be constant throughout this album. The guitar playing on this track almost sounds like a wailing that resonates deep within one's soul. “Tomb of Andesite” has a fast, bone shattering start and keeps that relentless sound until the end. Two tracks deep into this album and you know it will have no respite, it will keep the listener engaged, will keep one peeling off all of those mesmerising and heavy layers. My favourite track of Conveyance in Death is “Bone Ornament”, which sums up the essence of this album: amazing drumming, spine-chilling voice, and the beautiful guitar parts that make Rhûn's album exceptional. There are moments during this track that almost feel like it allows the listener to breathe and take in all of the slow moments, only to grip you back into its fierce hold. “Howl of Gleaming Swords” and “Citadel in Ruin” keep that beautiful groove and heaviness in Conveyance in Death, that can definitely move you and discover a different element within the album's sound. “Night's Glacial Passing” brings the record to a magnificent finish, like a triumphant farewell. It gives this album a great conclusion. From start to finish, Conveyance in Death provides a beautifully crafted heavy sound that only makes you feel grateful that, after this album was dormant for some years, it got released and we got to fully experience it.

Back into it this Black Metal January with an overdue conversation about the latest epic from Panopticon, The Rime of Memory!

Black Metal itself is a highly paradox genre right? It's always been connected to both - furor and melancholy. Musically, Atmospheric Black Metal represents that probably best, and one upcoming Atmospheric Black Metal band from the Northeastern USA (aka New England) that does that brilliantly is Eave. As we were proud to host a video premiere for them some weeks back, we are even happier that we got a chance to talk to Brian and hear some of his thoughts. Brian is a pretty reflective guy and so his answers come out well-versed and clear cut, which is always nice for an interviewer who was a bit sleepy at the time of recording. We talked a lot about the record (out on Bindrune Recordings), the video we were able to host, the dichotomy within modern Black Metal and to what extent the band's surroundings in New England influenced their sound and songs. Having common friends are sometimes a really great thing when they introduce you to great artists who do not get enough attention which is about to change right now. The common friend who introduced me to Loather is Ralph from Ultha who also invited the guys from Vienna to his Unholy Passion fest in 2022. Now the guys have a new record out via Vendetta Records called Eis and I must say it is a really good Atmospheric Black Metal record with loads of spherical moments and still a lot of wonderfully dark bits. Reason enough to sit down with two of the guys for an interview. We talked with drummer Hannes and guitar player David about the record, the great artwork, in which way the record was conceived and also of course, about their hometown Vienna and its weakness for everything morbid and somewhat Gothic. Myself and Howard were delighted to welcome John Quill the singer/guitarist with Third Island & Quill Effects and Tomás Hynes of Foraoisí gan Iniúchadh, a one Man DSBM / Atmospheric Black Metal band. John has been involved in the Limerick Metal Scene for years and has slowly built up his reputation as one of the go to guys for customised guitar and bass effect pedals. Tomás at 15 years old, has an impressive collection of releases on Bandcamp under his solo DSBM/Black Metal project. There has been a terrific reaction amongst the Metal community to someone like Tomás blazing his own trail in the scene. It's a great insight into both unique musicians and I hope you enjoy it.
