En Côte d'Ivoire, on estime qu'une plantation sur dix est touchée. Le pays fournit 44 % du cacao échangé au niveau mondial.Aucun traitement n'existe, si ce n'est lutter contre les cochenilles farineuses, ces petits insectes blancs qui transmettent la maladie aux arbres. Sauf que les cochenilles sont très peu sensibles aux insecticides et surtout, elles sont partout. Face à ce fléau, et pour éviter aux producteurs d'abattre les cacaoyers, il existe pourtant une solution : l'agroforesterie.Il y a une quarantaine d'années, la production de cacao est passée en monoculture plein soleil. Les cacaoyères d'aujourd'hui ressemblent donc à d'immenses champs uniformes, avec des arbres collés les uns aux autres. Les branches forment des ponts utilisés par les cochenilles pour se déplacer...et transmettre la maladie.
