**THE ANTARCTICA TREATY WILL EXPIRE IN 2048**The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1991 and came into effect in 1998. In Article 25, it cites a 50-year expiration date. If another protocol is not agreed upon, there is nothing stopping countries from seizing and occupying Antarctic land without any restrictions on protecting this precious environment. Antarctica is already under threat from Global Warming and science must continue to monitor changes and determine how to restore this habitat. Don't let it go silently. The Antarctic Treaty: https://www.ats.aq/e/antarctictreaty.htmlANYWAY, we also did an episode. Freda felt like it was time for another movie where someone loses both hands; The Thing, John Carpenter's of course! Did you know people hated it when it was first released? But today audiences love the nihilism and sometimes want to hear about the worse possible situation that could ever unfold. Abi is angry about dogs, and she has every right to be. John Carpenter got a fancy budget and spent in on Ennio Morricone but Ennio just did the music like John Carpenter did, which means John Carpenter could have saved a lot of money. We can't stop thinking about this! And then Quentin Tarantino used Ennio Morricone's John Carpenter score for the Hateful Eight and round and round it goes. Freda is afraid of her Aloe plant. Kurt Russel is a daddy and his hat is really big. The end. We're back with another episode of Backscatter! On this week's episode, Josh and Amir discussed their beliefs in God and why they believe in those particular conceptions of God. They also explored different beliefs in God and why someone may adopt that particular conception. The two of them also discussed religion in a broad sense, the positives, as well as many of the issues they find with organized religion. For example, people who are particularly religious claim to “know” what God is when that is not something anyone could literally know. There is a reason why religion is called beliefs and not knowledge. They also discussed the problem of evil: If God is all good, all knowing, and all powerful, how does evil exist. They discussed some of the solutions they've heard of as well as exploring some of their own solutions. Ultimately though, there does not seem to be an adequate solution, this idea is explored further in the episode. Towards the end they also touched on the concept of miracles and why it seems unlikely that they are real. Stay tuned for more episodes every Thursday at 12 PM PST! Welcome back to this week's episode of Backscatter! On this episode, Josh and Amir had a discussion largely revolving around how the nature of reality is often grey, yet most people like to see things as black or white. The subject of COVID-19 and the vaccines were the catalyst for this particular conversation, however, the idea of things being grey and not black or white can be applied to anything as they explore later on in the episode. Most people find a narrative they believe in and do not explore any other ideologies aside from their own. Social media has made this one of the easiest things to do as we often willingly trap ourselves in an echo-chamber of ideas we agree with. But, social media has also made it extremely easy to find ideas you disagree with, to listen, and to learn. Stay tuned for more episodes of Backscatter, every Thursday at 12 PM PST! We're back with another episode of Backscatter! This week Josh and Amir started their discussion by pondering upon free will and different ideas regarding the concept of freewill. They discussed these different ideas as well as what they thought before moving towards a conversation regarding ethics and morality. The ideas of ethics and morality are something most people take for granted, we accept that morals exist because we are told they exist, we accept what is right and what is wrong because we are told what is right and wrong. They debated whether or not morality is subjective or objective, what gives morality authority, and does morality even exist? They also presented several scenarios, including a few real world examples, where they asked what the right thing to do is and why? Stay tuned for more episodes every Thursday at 12 pm PST! This episode started off with Josh and Amir catching up, Josh talked a bit about music production as well as what he and his band, Apparition Coast, have been up to. They then shifted the discussion towards Covid-19, specifically the debate around masks, what different doctor's have said, things they have heard and understand to an extent, and their stances on the issue. This conversation led Josh and Amir into a discussion about culture, society, and truth. They began to ask how do we know what it is? Does perception define reality? And so on. The notion of truth and understanding what is true and what is false seems like an obvious answer but it is far from it. This idea as well as much more is discussed on this week's episode of Backscatter! Welcome back to Cutting Chai Stories with Jayati Vora. In this episode, I speak with multidisciplinary artist Racquel Keller, who participated in my monthlong writing #onestoryaday writing challenge in July in the Cutting Chai Stories Facebook group. Except, instead of responding to my writing prompts, she chose to write a poem a day that was inspired by a color. She also overlaid the words on a carefully chosen image, and helped us interpret the poem through her artist's eye. She reads one of her poems from that challenge, Rose Madder. Racquel talks about her art being inspired by writing, and vice versa, and offers her top tip for seeing the world around you as an artist. PLUS, she has not one but TWO art-inspired writing prompts this week. Speaking of which, I have my own word + image collaboration to announce this week -- a series called Backscatter that features the street photography of @hersh.img with my stories, all on Instagram. Check them out on my feed @jayativora. Did any of the pairings surprise you? Which one's your favorite? Write and let me know. The artists Racquel mentioned on the show can be found here: Gustave Moreau's abstract preparatory drawings: https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1SQJL_enUS809US809&sxsrf=ALeKk034r6si4fQjbgnJdVEPQ6bMgD1yNQ:1605038991679&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=gustave+moreau+art+abstrait&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjY5suX5PjsAhWhmOAKHZrcCjoQjJkEegQIBBAB&biw=1396&bih=656&dpr=2.75 For active backgrounds, look at the works of Walt Kuhn's "Plumes," Franz Kline, Clyfford Still and John Singer Sargent. More about Racquel Keller: Racquel Keller is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is found in many forms, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and assemblage. She constructs imagery inspired by her collection of natural specimens and vintage objects. These seemingly disparate pieces are put together to tell a story that captures the feeling of nostalgia these objects evoke. She works as an Art Instructor at the Greenbelt Community Center, the College Park Arts Exchange, and for select workshops at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. She regularly offers classes and workshops in a variety of mediums and subjects. She actively exhibits her work in the DC Metropolitan area and is a current Artist in Residence at The Greenbelt Community Center (Maryland, USA). Keep in touch with Racquel: Podcast: Pure Fire Creatives Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/racquelkellerart/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/racquel.keller.7 Website: http://www.racquelkeller.com/shop.html For the month of November, 30 percent of all of Racquel's art sales will go to Elimu Girls: https://elimugirls.com/
