On this episode of the New Books Network, Dr. Megan Hunt joins us to talk about her recent book, Southern By the Grace of God, which was published in 2024 by the University of Georgia Press. Lke the media coverage of the civil rights era itself, Hollywood dramas have reinforced regional stereotypes of race, class, and gender to cleanse and redeem the wider nation from the implications of systemic racism. As Southern by the Grace of God reveals, however, Hollywood manipulates southern religion (in particular) to further enhance this pattern of difference and regional exceptionalism, consistently displacing broader American racism through a representation of the poor white southerner who is as religious as he (and it is always a he) is racist. By foregrounding the role of religion in these characterizations, Megan Hunt illuminates the pernicious intersections between Hollywood and southern exceptionalism, a long-standing U.S. nationalist discourse that has assigned racial problems to the errant South alone, enabling white supremacy to not only endure but reproduce throughout the nation. Southern by the Grace of God examines the presentation and functions of Protestant Christianity in cinematic depictions of the American South. Hunt argues that religion is an understudied signifier of the South on film, used--with varying degrees of sophistication--to define the region's presumed exceptionalism for regional, national, and international audiences. Rooted in close textual analysis and primary research into the production and reception of more than twenty Hollywood films that engage with the civil rights movement and/or its legacy, this book provides detailed case studies of films that use southern religiosity to negotiate American anxieties around race, class, and gender. Religion, Hunt contends, is an integral trope of the South in popular culture and especially crucial to the divisions essential to Hollywood storytelling. Learn more about your ad choices. Emotional Intelligence: Your Greatest Asset and Key to Success
Fear is a totally normal emotion! We all feel it sometimes, whether it's when we are heading into "unknown territory" or facing a difficult situation and we aren't sure how it's going to turn out. Many of us experience fear when faced with the prospect of looking for a new job or leaving an old one, entering into or leaving a relationship, or even just getting in the car and trying to stay alert to potential dangers on the highway. BUT: When it comes to making decisions or even just starting the day, fear can cripple us. It can prevent us from taking action, prevent us from speaking our truth, prevent us from trying something new that may turn out to be the best thing we ever did. Our Inner Sage, that Divine Self that loves us unconditionally, will help us, if we draw on it. Using the Sage powers of Positive Intelligence, we can tap into our Sage through mindful breathing, using our senses to stay in the present moment, and even praying, asking for help. Trust your Sage. Know that when you are fully present, you are neither in the past nor in the future. You are right here, right now. Look at your feet. Where are they? Tune in to Episode 13 of Emotional Intelligence:: Your Greatest Asset and Key to Success when interview Lauri Stern and we talk about why mindfulness and being centered in our body is the best way to live in faith and combat fear.Show Notes:Lauri Stern:email either Lauri@customdesignedwellness.com AND Lstheflash@gmail.com FB: Lauri Stern Yoga https://www.facebook.com/LauriSternYoga/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557984732036Insta: @sternlauri https://www.instagram.com/sternlauri/linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauri-fleischmann-stern-28417a58/Activism in the Name of God: Religion and Black Feminist Public Intellectuals from the Nineteenth Century to the Present. What did Hitler believe about God, religion and faith? Richard Weikart joins us. Plus, Do you feel uncertain about how to share your Catholic faith with others, especially as society increasingly rejects religion? Dr. Jeanette welcomes Lynne Renoir, author of God Interrogated - Reinterpreting the Divine, to explore God and religions throughout history. How did we get here? Who is the ultimate life being or force that brought us into this world? Can we see that perhaps our beliefs, morals, and truths are now shifting from what was held dear as the rule in past decades and centuries before? Are we finding the old stories might no longer work in our perception of life today? Is the word God bringing up emotions or resistance that has been handed down from generations within a family structure and you are expected to do what had been handed to you to follow in growing up?What if everything you know, isn't? Are you open to explore your life experience?Even if everyone has a different point of view and follows different truths, perhaps what we are all seeking is the greater acceptance of all? As we are seekers, we are now unraveling the beliefs so dearly held and allowing new ways of being a loving human being to enter our hearts and soul. For more information on Lynne visit: www.LynneRennoir.comFor a session with Dr. Jeanette on spiritualtiy in your world and how to navigate through all the questions visit: www.DrJeanetteGallagher.com

Today, I interview Jami Carlacio whose mother died when Jami was an infant. An older sibling cared for her for a few months, and then her grandmother took over for a while. When Jami was five, the family was gathered in Spokane and her grandmother suddenly died while they were there. An already precarious little life had just gotten infinitely more difficult. Jami was left behind to stay with family in Spokane until she was 21. During this time, Jami felt lost and alone. She began using drugs and alcohol at age 12 to ease the pain of feeling unlovable and unwanted. Jami struggled with alcohol addiction for the next 25 years, living in misery and experiencing suicidal thoughts. She had hit a spiritual rock bottom. Then, she looked back on her grandmother. Her grandmother had cared for her when no one else would. She had planted the seed of love during those first crucial years of Jami's life. Jami began to understand that she was lovable and that she had been very loved by someone. She saw that perhaps she was, in fact, still worthy of love. She realized that alcohol couldn't fill the void in her life. It couldn't heal her heart. Only love could do that. Her grandmother's sweet words came back to her, and this was the voice that empowered her to move forward and find value in herself. Jami then felt led to become a priest, but couldn't do this as a woman. So she went to New Haven and studied theology, earning an MDiv. God was leading her toward her purpose, and her purpose was to facilitate powerful, meaningful change and healing. She became a successful writer, coach, and activist. After experiencing so much loss, neglect, and trauma, Jami has come out so much stronger on the other side. She made it, and today she takes others by the hand to show them love and belonging. She has made it her life's work to help others find validation, encouragement, wholeness, and self-esteem by harnessing the power of their own voices. __________________ Jami Carlacio is a master-certified trauma-informed life coach, a writer, and a writing consultant. She has also consulted on gender equity in the workplace as well as on white privilege and anti-bias. Jami holds a PhD in rhetoric and composition and has taught writing and literature at various colleges and universities, including Cornell and Yale. She is the author of numerous scholarly works that feature the rhetorical genius of religious Black women in the public sphere. She is the editor of a collection of essays designed to help educators teach the work of Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison. Her most recent book is an edited collection entitled Activism in the Name of God: Religion and Black Feminist Public Intellectuals from the Nineteenth Century to the Present, due out in August of 2023 from the University Press of Mississippi. After about 25 years in academia, Jami left to pursue her spiritual calling. Since June of this year, she has focused her attention on coaching women who struggle with trauma-informed self-sabotaging behavior, who are re-evaluating their career choices, and who want to develop the self-confidence to choose healthy, affirming personal and professional relationships. NASA wants to assess how humans will react if alien life is found on other planets and discovery could impact our ideas of gods and creation. According to reports, the agency is hiring 24 theologians to take part in its program at the Center for Theological Inquiry (CTI) at Princeton University in New Jersey, which NASA gave a $1.1 million grant to in 2014. CTI is described as building 'bridges of under understanding by convening theologians, scientists, scholars, and policymakers to think together. The program's aim is to answer questions that have confused us for a long time such as 'What is life? What does it mean to be alive? Where do we draw the line between humans and aliens? What are the possibilities for sentient life in other places?'Presently, NASA has two rovers on Mars, and several probes orbiting Jupiter and Saturn. It also launched the James Web Telescope yesterday that will study galaxy, star and planet formation in the universe. The agency is in hopes to discover life outside Earth. The Rev Dr Andrew Davison, a priest and theologian at the University of Cambridge with a doctorate in biochemistry from Oxford, is among 24 theologians chosen for the program.'Religious traditions would be an important feature in how humanity would work through any such confirmation of life elsewhere,' Davidson shared in a blog post on the University of Cambridge site.'Because of that, it features as part of NASA's ongoing aim to support work on 'the societal implications of astrobiology', working with various partner organizations, including the Center of Theological Inquiry at Princeton.' Davison is set to publish a book next year, titled Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine, which notes he believes we are getting closer to finding life on other planets.About Jim WillisA theologian, historian, and musician, Jim Willis earned his Bachelor's degree from the Eastman School of Music, and his Master's degree from Andover Newton Theological School. Dr. Jeanette welcomes Alan Davey as we begin a new Lenten season and the idea of 'what is God' is being discussed in many households after such loss and destruction of the last several years. Alan will be sharing his new book Walking the Line: Embracing the Imperatives of Jesus which explores contemporary issues of our day.God is inviting us to live in a house of love, not fear, but how do we get there from here? If we have never know God or love, how can we recognize it in the first place when it comes knocking?Have you given up religion and God because of the dogma that others, books, family, traditions, or beliefs does not seem to fit today's world and you just don't know what is real or truth anymore? Who is really in control of our lives, our breath, and our soul? Perhaps we do not want any control in our life and are on a quest to cut all ties to anything that tries to tell us what to do, how to be or what is real. If we allow ourselves to become so hardened to the possibility of a new concept of existence, who will come by my side to support me and walk this journey with me, in spite of all the other naysayers that are out there? What is the world we are trying to navigate and how can we explore what questions to start asking of our heart and soul; maybe that is the first place to start. For more information from Alan visit: www.AlanDavey.comFor free articles, gentle healing book, session coupons, and newsletter from Dr. Jeanette visit: www.DrJeanetteGallagher.com Dr. Jeanette offers sessions via telephone across the globe, to guide and support those who are seeking peace and healing in their lives. We're taking a break from uploading shows from The Vault of the Ancients to bring you 2 episodes that aired in early 2022. Here we converse with Prof. Humberto Casanova, a Chilean theologian. Mr. Casanova has impeccable credentials in the school of Reformed theology. But his thinking as taken a turn toward the more progressive end of Christianity. In his book Imagining God he examines the poetry, mythology and metaphor that permeate The Bible. While to some this kind of thinking somehow "diminishes" the status of Holy Writ, for others, a book like this can be a lifeline to a refreshed faith. Enjoy.
Do you believe in God? Contemplating your relationship to spirit can feel supercharged with triggering emotions, especially if we've had negative or uninspiring interactions with religion in the past. In this episode, K + L reflect on their spiritual evolution and relationship with God. From traditional rituals of childhood conditioning to the framework they feel aligned with today. They discuss how they navigated resistance around what it means to believe in God, and how the process of unlearning conventions has helped them cultivate a connection with God that feels unconditional, authentic, and life-affirming. We also talk about: Individual journeys with religion Coming back to a relationship with God Spectrums of religion Judgements in religion and consequences How to make spirituality your own Sponsors: Athletic Greens | Get a 1-year supply of Vitamin D + five FREE travel packs with your first purchase at http://www.athleticgreens.com/almost30 (athleticgreens.com/almost30) Bev | Get 20% off your first purchase + free shipping at https://drinkbev.com/pages/almost30?utm_campaign=almost_30_november_2021&utm_medium=podcast&utm_source=almost_30 (drinkbev.com/almost30) or use code “ALMOST30” at checkout Elavi | Get 15% off when you use the code ALMOST30 + free shipping on 2 pouches or more at https://www.elavi.co/ (elavi.co ) Open | Get 30 days free with the code ALMOST30 at https://o-p-e-n.com/community?code=ALMOST30&utm_soure=manual&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=ALMOST30 (open-together.com/almost30) Daily Harvest | Use code ALMOST30 to get up to $40 off your first box athttp://www.daily-harvest.com/almost30 ( www.daily-harvest.com/almost30) Resources: https://www.samharris.org/books/waking-up (“Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion”) by Sam Harris https://www.amazon.com/Untethered-Soul-Journey-Beyond-Yourself/dp/1572245379 ( “The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself” )by Michael A. This is a tricky one since Lawrence Krauss's critique of Christianity/religion is potentially the most scientifically grounded (Though it actually isn't). And I'm not a physicist. However, given the character of Krauss's critic of Christianity, it soon becomes evident that the governing thought process of this atheist (i.e. antitheist) is the belief in the importance of undermining religion as an end itself, and in the process set science 'free': That is to make it untethered from any moralistic concern that may emanate from a religiously inspired teaching or worldview. Writing in the New Yorker in 2015, Krauss states: "In science, of course, the very word “sacred” is profane. No ideas, religious or otherwise, get a free pass. The notion that some idea or concept is beyond question or attack is anathema to the entire scientific undertaking". The problem with this view is that, if everything is subject to question and scientific scrutiny, then why not the fundamental rights that govern modern societies: That of life, liberty, and freedom from oppression, and to pursue one's happiness. A notable point of Lawrence Krauss's critic of God/Religion is his arguments for the origins of the universe. Supposedly from nothing. A matter that Christian apologists and scientists alike have confronted. With most notable secular push back against Lawrence Krauss's position and subsequent book: A Universe from Nothing by David Albert in the New York Times in 2012. My problem with Lawrence Krauss is a somewhat different one. You see the thing about people like Lawrence Krauss, whose beliefs and actions are driven by their obvious vendetta against religion is the very real impact that it is likely to have on Western culture and Western civilization. This is a much bigger subject that cannot be engaged here. But what the anti-religious critic advanced by the likes of Lawrence, notably against Christianity-since this is the religion of the West-the only real place where the scientific enterprise developed and as arisen to the lofty standards that it has today-is that it translates into a logical critic or attack on the spiritual foundations of the West. To undermine Christianity: intellectually, culturally, and ultimately politically only works to weaken the foundations of Western civilization. Further problematic is Krauss's elevation of science as some self-contained reality. That can or ought to operate with a mind of its own. Understand this, science in and of itself does nothing. Science is basically a set of rules and processes on how to go about studying the nature of reality: Which involves steps like forming hypotheses; collecting data to support or contradict it, developing theories; carrying out experiments, testing the results to validate or invalidate the original theory or hypothesis, etc. This scientific process in and of itself does not tell us what kind of experiments to conduct, what kind of scientific theories are worth developing and pursuing. And needless to say what kind of scientific applications are good or bad in terms of their immediate or ultimate effects on humanity and the world. This requires a moral framework that cannot be reduced to the scientific method, as there isn't one in the world of science. Krauss's attack on Christianity, and by extension Western culture, only works to undermine the very society that gave rise to the scientific method: one that is for the most part values the human.

In this conversation on two of the hottest social and cultural issues of our day — the decline of religion and the rise of identity politics, Mary Eberstadt presents her alternative theory for the “secularization thesis” (that religious decline was followed by the decline of the family), arguing instead that the undermining of the family has undermined Christianity itself. Drawing on sociology, history, demography, theology, literature, and many other sources, Eberstadt shows that family decline and religious decline have gone hand in hand in the Western world in a way that has not been understood before — that they are “the double helix of society, each dependent on the strength of the other for successful reproduction.” Eberstadt argues that there are enormous social, economic, civic, and other costs attendant on declines of both family and faith, and Dr. Shermer presents counter examples to show that America's extreme religiosity has been a burden on its social health and that the decline of religion is a good thing. In the second part of the conversation Eberstadt and Shermer discuss her previous book on identity politics and how identitarians track and expose the ideologically impure, as people face the consequences of their rancor: a litany of “isms” run amok across all levels of cultural life; the free marketplace of ideas muted by agendas shouted through megaphones; and a spirit of general goodwill warped into a state of perpetual outrage. This rise of identity politics, she argues, is a direct result of the fallout of the sexual revolution, especially the collapse and shrinkage of the family. Eberstadt argues that from time immemorial humans have forged their identities within the structure of kinship. The extended family, in a real sense, is the first tribe and first teacher. But with its unprecedented decline across a variety of measures, generations of people have been set adrift and can no longer answer the question Who am I? with reference to primordial ties. Desperate for solidarity and connection, they claim membership in politicized groups whose displays of frantic irrationalism amount to primal screams for familial and communal loss.
Spent years Trying to answer this Question. I have spent years trying to understand my visceral reaction to religion. I was 100% there with a higher power, but organized religion was a struggle. I have no idea why. When to church each Sunday, Sunday school, communion, confirmation, etc., but still was repelled by it. I spent my life trying to understand the various religions and Gods of those religions. What I found was all, but one had created a system. If you do steps 1,2,3 etc., you will be loved. For God it was, I will love you regardless. I could embrace that for sure. It has been and will continue to be a journey. But what I know to be true is there is a powerful force that guides the Universe. Those who understand this force can draw success and love into their life. And let's be honest here, who doesn't want that? Here's to you Finding Your Blue Rose!
The Ansari Podcast: Mahmoud Elansary and 2 of his highschool/college bestfriends talk about what God and religion has menat to them historically, how they feel about God and religion now. They ponder over the creation of God and who is God, how many Gods and religions are there and how to choose. What logic and knowledge mean to God and how important they are and the analogy of a ballroom as life. The issue with cancel culture, not listening to others, and Darrel Davis' experience with KKK leaders and members. They talk about the dangers of social media and some of the pros and cons. They talk about how corrupt governments have risen to power by using “righteousness” as the reason why they do the evil things they do and how one piece plays on that concept. And the problem of people envying one another on social media
We're back with another episode of Backscatter! On this week's episode, Josh and Amir discussed their beliefs in God and why they believe in those particular conceptions of God. They also explored different beliefs in God and why someone may adopt that particular conception. The two of them also discussed religion in a broad sense, the positives, as well as many of the issues they find with organized religion. For example, people who are particularly religious claim to “know” what God is when that is not something anyone could literally know. There is a reason why religion is called beliefs and not knowledge. They also discussed the problem of evil: If God is all good, all knowing, and all powerful, how does evil exist. They discussed some of the solutions they've heard of as well as exploring some of their own solutions. Ultimately though, there does not seem to be an adequate solution, this idea is explored further in the episode. Towards the end they also touched on the concept of miracles and why it seems unlikely that they are real. Stay tuned for more episodes every Thursday at 12 PM PST! This is absolutely a spirit episode, as we are talking to a man who has had two near death experiences, studied divinity and specifically mysticism, AND is an ordained pastor. So a lot of unique perspectives! Rev. Peter Baldwin Panagore, MDiv is an entrepreneur, ordained pastor, and author. A two-time Near-Death Experiencer, Peter first died in 1980 of hypothermia while ice climbing in Canada, and then again of a heart attack in 2015, just as his book Heaven Is Beautiful: How Dying Taught Me That Death is Just The Beginning was released globally. For fifteen years, he broadcast a daily spot on two NBC TV stations with Daily Devotions TV, reaching a grand total of 450 million views and listens on TV, FM, and AM across Maine and New Hampshire, and around the nation. His book, Two Minutes for God: Quick Fixes for the Spirit is a daily inspirational with stories drawn from among the seventeen hundred he wrote and broadcast each day. Peter graduated from Yale University where he completed his Masters in Divinity with a focus on the practices and writing of western mysticism. He is currently at work on his third book with the working title, Modern Mysticism and You. In this episode, we discuss: · Peter's experience of death and what he encountered on the other side. · The struggle (and sometimes reluctancy) to try to explain and articulate mystical experiences using the constraints of human language. · How Peter explains and defines God. · The judgment process he went through after death and how it differs from how it is often taught in church. · His experience and understanding of Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. · The four characteristics of a mystical experience and the different levels of mystical experiences that people have. · The history and relationship between mystics and mystical experiences and the power structure of religion. · How judgement can be couched within morality and structure. · The history of the Bible and the implications of reading and interpreting it only literally. · The definition of true humility and how to find radical equality among all of us. How did God become all of these religions that speak that their God is the straight and narrow path to the truth? To heaven? To being right or wrong? To eliminating those who do not believe the same? To saying that some are worthy of God's love and some are not? To those who believe there is no God? How did we put all of this on God when God is Love? How did we put pressure on ourselves by saying God told us it is so? How is it that we keep each other at bay over our differences of how we look at God when God says we are one and we are whole already? What benefits did we gain from accepting that God only exists in one way or another, and in theory is for all of us, yet only the ones that believe as we believe?
