At the same time, he joined the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and successfully completed Officer Candidates School (OCS) during their service. After graduation, Jesse moved to the DC Metropolitan area from Miami and began working at GEICO, aiming for a management role through their Supervisor Leadership Program (SLP). However, he faced a challenge of maximizing his income without further education. He decided to explore bartending as a side job due to its high earning potential and flexible hours.Getting into bartending was tough, with Jesse initially facing rejections from local bars. He started working as nightclub security, finally got a job as a barback, then as a bartender at a busy nightclub, where he saw the power of sales as he earned more in one night than a week at GEICO.Jesse eventually left GEICO and found an opportunity in permit expediting for a gas pipeline project in Baltimore County, MD. This new industry allowed him to combine his sales skills and scalability. A year later, Jesse founded City Permit, expanding its services from serving only DC clients to helping commercial and residential clients across the country. This week, Mario and Twenty welcome teacher and author of Etymolgy Rules Brittany Selah to the Expression Appraisal Table. What good is a horn that does not make a sound? Watch as Mario and Twenty are joined by teacher, and author of Etymolgy Rules Brittany Selah to discuss the meaning and origin of (Don't) Toot Your Own Horn. Brittany is a fellow lover of language and shares her passion of the words, meanings, and origins with us. She discusses the importance of uplifting her students, people of color and herself through education and knowledge. By the end of the show, we all may have something to toot our horns about. Brittany Selah Lee-Bey is an educator and writer from the DC Metropolitan area. She enjoys teaching learners of all ages, but especially middle-schoolers, and lives by the idea that reading and writing are “emancipatory acts.” By day, she's a reading specialist and a debate coach at a secondary school in DC, but by night she is one half of the rap duo OyaBlaq. In her spare time, Brittany enjoys reading, writing fiction and poetry, spending time in nature, playing the keyboard, listening to good music, and TV binge watching- especially reality shows. Her favorite literary genre is Black speculative fiction, reading authors such as Octavia Butler, Helen Oyeyemi and Tananarive Due. EtymologyRules is an educational program Brittany created to equip people worldwide with the knowledge and power of words, as word knowledge is key to developing strong communication skills. Dr. Denise Wilkins affectionately known as Ms. Denise was born in Montclair, New Jersey, and was raised in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. Her painful childhood, caused her to spiral out of control and to fall into a world of rebellion.  As the Bible describes, rebellion is as a type of witchcraft.  Witchcraft is strategically designed to destroy you.  At 34, home alone, crying, ready to give up, she began to commit suicide. Just before she took the pills she had an encounter with an angel of the Lord who saved her. His audible voice spoke to her and said, ”There are no failures in God!” This undeniable mark of God in 1991 was the day that began the most AMAZING spiritual journey of her life.Dr. Wilkins affectionately known as Ms. Denise, has been coaching, organizing and speaking since 1996.  She laid a foundation with her community work as the founder of Jesus the Spiritual Connection  Christian Outreach Network, today referred to as THE NETWORK.   As a woman of faith she co-labored along with local Pastor's, other community leaders and local gospel artist throughout the inner-city streets of the Washington, DC, (DMV) area. They provided neighborhood concerts that offered food, clothing, toys and giveaways with a message of hope in Christ Jesus.  After the 911 attacks on the Pentagon, Ms Denise continued her street ministry but was offered a position as a Counselor/Outreach Worker for a FEMA Funded program, Project Resilience. The Project Resilience program was run by the Mental Health Department of Alexandria, Virginia.  In 2002, under the auspice of the Mental Health Dept. she established what she now calls, "Black Lights Performing Arts Company" (BLPAC) and CHOICES Motivational Services (CMS). Each program was a huge success in the city. She ran her programs in middle and high schools, as well as other youth facilities such as Detention centers, aged out foster care programs, recreational facilities and anywhere else she was called upon to speak to the youth and their families.  Her work with the City received high honors from the Directors of Mental Health, City Council and the Mayor of the City of Alexandria, Bill Euille, at the time.   Ms Denise was recognized with the "Performing the World 2 Organization, which is an internationally developed group of Psychologist.  They were amazed by her use of drama as a therapy with positive youth involvement never seen before in the history of the City of Alexandria. Ms Denise is an innovator, trailblazer, and trendsetter whose plethora of creative arts projects and programs change lives. When the FEMA Funded program closed, Ms. Denise continued running The NETWORK full time until 2010 where she laid her work down with the murder of her youngest son, Justin. In 2012, she pulled her vision out and began to build the new foundation.  By 2014, she established the organization Justin L Davis Foundation (JLDF) as a 501(c)3 non-profit. Here target audience is adult women, male and female youth and young adults and their families.                                                in 2017, Miss Denise moved to the Houston Texas area where she is currently running a community project. In 2019, she was offered an honorary doctorate degree in ministry from Juliana King University. Ms. Denise is also a writer, director, and producer. She is a licensed minister, certified youth and adult coach and speaker for the Justin L. Davis Foundation. In 2020, she became an author of her first book, "Born Into Dysfunction to be Remade"  In closing, after the loss of her youngest son, she rose out of the ashes to turn her "PAIN into PURPOSE." With a God given youth vision leading her way, she pushes forward.  Without a doubt Ms. Denise believes that the seed of depression Justin suffered and died from, fell into God's rich soil, and with all that she has experienced, God can use her to bear much fruit.Ms Denise believes that these are perilous times and it calls for a different plan of action. We are in the last days and God is doing a new thing. He is calling Christian leaders to lay down isms and schisms and pick up the power of God's love, to show the world His FORM of UNITY.  Let's Work Together and Change the World for our Youth. www.msdenisespeaks.today

Lisa is joined by Norman Rosenthal, MD who talks about his latest book, Poetry Rx: How 50 Inspiring Poems Can Heal and Bring Joy To Your Life. Dr. Rosenthal's research with SAD led him to write "Winter Blues" and two other books on the topic. More recently Rosenthal has written books on the Transcendental Meditation technique ("Transcendence" and "Supermind"), "The Gift of Adversity" and, most recently, "Poetry Rx: How 50 Inspiring Poems Can Heal and Bring Joy To Your Life." Altogether, he has written or co-authored 10 books and published over 200 professional articles. Dr. Rosenthal maintains a clinical and coaching practice in the DC Metropolitan area. If you find yourself wondering how reading poetry can be beneficial for your mental health, be sure to listen. Lisa found herself marveling at both the poems and how deeply they affected her. Listening to Dr. Rosenthal's soothing voice as he reads some aloud is a gift in itself. Book description: "I used to believe that poetry did not “speak” to me, but I now see how wrong I was. I lived for 44 years with a husband, a lyricist, whose beautifully crafted, heartfelt lyrics touched my every fiber and continue to uplift and inspire me a decade after his death. The special beauty of Dr. Rosenthal's book for me is his discussion of what each poem is saying, what the poet was likely feeling and often how the poems helped him personally, as when he left his birth family in South Africa for a rewarding career in the United States." - Jane Brody, Author & New York Times Columnist Poetry to Heal, Inspire and Enjoy Poetry Rx presents 50 great poems as seen through the eyes of a renowned psychiatrist and New York Times bestseller. In this book, you will find insights into love, sorrow, ecstasy and everything in between: Love in the moment or for a lifetime; love that is fulfilling or addictive; when to break up and how to survive when someone breaks up with you. Separate sections deal with responses to the natural world, and the varieties of human experience (such as hope, reconciliation, leaving home, faith, self-actualization, trauma, anger, and the thrill of discovery). Other sections involve finding your way in the world and the search for meaning, as well as the final stages of life. In describing this multitude of human experiences, using vignettes from his work and life, Rosenthal serves as a comforting guide to these poetic works of genius. Through his writing, the workings of the mind, as depicted by these gifted writers speak to us as intimately as our closest friends. Rosenthal also delves into the science of mind and brain. Who would have thought, for example, that listening to poetry can cause people to have goosebumps by activating the reward centers of the brain? Yet research shows that to be true. And who were these fascinating poets? In a short biosketch that accompanies each poem, Rosenthal draws connections between the poets and their poems that help us understand the enigmatic minds that gave birth to these masterworks. Altogether, a fulfilling and intriguing must-read for anyone interested in poetry, the mind, self-help and genius. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We also talk about whether the U.S. is trying to stabilize its relationship with Russia in order to focus on China as the biggest threat, a general outlook of China's relations with Russia and whether there will be any diplomatic or economic red lines for China as tensions grow with the U.S. Ron Hampton, DC Representative for Blacks in Law Enforcement of America, former Executive Director of the National Black Police Association and a retired veteran of the DC Metropolitan Police Department, and Dr. Alex Vitale, professor of sociology at Brooklyn College, coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project, and author of the book “The End of Policing,” talk to us about a massive trove of DC Metropolitan police emails and data being released following a hack of their systems, and the revelation of an extensive data gathering and surveillance program that was a cornerstone of aggressive policing targeting working communities where people could be classified as gang members at the whim of the police. We also talk about police accountability oversight and the efforts to disband and defund the police since the guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin, and whether there are any changes coming in the future.Jim Kavanagh, editor of The Polemicist, talks to us about another chapter in the fight within the progressive and centrist wings of the democratic party over Ilhan Omar's criticism of Israel as an apartheid regime, the news that a judge tossed out most of the claims filed by the ACLU, Black Lives Matter and others that accused the Trump administration of authorizing an unprovoked attack on demonstrators in Lafayette Square last year, and Hunter Biden's burgeoning art career.

Welcome back to Cutting Chai Stories with Jayati Vora. In this episode, I speak with multidisciplinary artist Racquel Keller, who participated in my monthlong writing #onestoryaday writing challenge in July in the Cutting Chai Stories Facebook group. Except, instead of responding to my writing prompts, she chose to write a poem a day that was inspired by a color. She also overlaid the words on a carefully chosen image, and helped us interpret the poem through her artist's eye. She reads one of her poems from that challenge, Rose Madder. Racquel talks about her art being inspired by writing, and vice versa, and offers her top tip for seeing the world around you as an artist. PLUS, she has not one but TWO art-inspired writing prompts this week. Speaking of which, I have my own word + image collaboration to announce this week -- a series called Backscatter that features the street photography of @hersh.img with my stories, all on Instagram. Check them out on my feed @jayativora. Did any of the pairings surprise you? Which one's your favorite? Write and let me know. The artists Racquel mentioned on the show can be found here: Gustave Moreau's abstract preparatory drawings: https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1SQJL_enUS809US809&sxsrf=ALeKk034r6si4fQjbgnJdVEPQ6bMgD1yNQ:1605038991679&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=gustave+moreau+art+abstrait&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjY5suX5PjsAhWhmOAKHZrcCjoQjJkEegQIBBAB&biw=1396&bih=656&dpr=2.75 For active backgrounds, look at the works of Walt Kuhn's "Plumes," Franz Kline, Clyfford Still and John Singer Sargent. More about Racquel Keller: Racquel Keller is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is found in many forms, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and assemblage. She constructs imagery inspired by her collection of natural specimens and vintage objects. These seemingly disparate pieces are put together to tell a story that captures the feeling of nostalgia these objects evoke. She works as an Art Instructor at the Greenbelt Community Center, the College Park Arts Exchange, and for select workshops at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. She regularly offers classes and workshops in a variety of mediums and subjects. She actively exhibits her work in the DC Metropolitan area and is a current Artist in Residence at The Greenbelt Community Center (Maryland, USA). As Americans grapple with the devastation wrought by the dual pandemics of racism and Covid-19, it is critically important to understand the vast racial disparities Covid-19 has exposed within the African American community (specifically), but communities of color (generally). The legacies of housing policies sponsoring residential segregation, and the associated racial gaps in wealth, educational achievement, health inequities, and lethal police encounters resonate nationally, but global white supremacy and migration patterns have contributed to powerful displays of international solidarity. In this episode, Dr. Louis Woods speaks with experts in multiple fields to examine how the sudden shock of the Covid-19 pandemic has illuminated the centuries-old pandemic of racism in western culture, and particularly in the United States. Sociologist Dr. Tony Brown discusses underlying health disparities. Dr. Terah Venzant Chambers describes educational funding discrepancies contributing to racial achievement gaps. Dr. Sharita Jacobs-Thompson explores the invaluable contribution her co-taught “History of Policing” class has made to DC Metropolitan veteran officers and police cadets. Dr. Michelle Stevens examines the link between PTSD and trauma in the black community and emphasizes the critical importance of self-care. Dr. Glenn Chambers provides international contexts to the global protest movement associated with murder of George Floyd. Dr. Louis Woods then concludes with an analysis of historical housing policy and the generational impacts witnessed today. It took the world stopping, for a critical mass of white Americans to hear, in many instances for the first time, the legitimate outcries of police brutality made generationally by African Americans. This podcast episode provides a holistic exploration to the tragedies that made this latest iteration of white police terror both a national and an international movement. This episode is part of RTN's Pass The Mic Project. This episode was recorded by, and remains the property of, Dr. Louis Woods.

As leaders, we understand the importance of developing talent, but we can easily miss the mark on what that actually means. Why does our talent development have to go beyond teaching real estate? How can we identify talent on the front end and grow our teams? Why do leaders need accountability as much as the agents do? On this episode, we are joined by Samer Kuraishi to discuss creating an environment of excellence and collaboration on our teams.       I’m not leading with money, I’m leading with experience and maturity and gaining wealth in the mind. -Samer Kuraishi   Want to Know Where Greg Harrelson Gets His DATA? Click here:https://www.colerealtyresource.com/landing/realestatesalessolutions/   Takeaways + Tactics Our job isn’t teaching agents to sell real estate. We have to teach them what it takes to be successful. A dominant culture will flush out the wrong people on its own. A huge part of growing as a leader is learning to let go of control and empowering the people around us.   At the start, Samer shares on how the team is set up, and the importance of being multidimensional. Next we talked about the important thing leaders miss when it comes to developing talent. We also talked about how to identify talent, and why so many existing agents lose faith in their teams.   We also discussed: Using accountability to grow and how delegation protects us What to do when we hire the wrong person The importance of letting go of control   In order to build an environment of excellence, we have to train people the right way. Our job in developing talent shouldn’t be about showing agents how to buy and sell homes. It has more to do with showing them how to be disciplined, teaching them to make commitment to the habits that leads to results, handling rejection, and getting through when things go wrong. It’s our responsibility to help them the solution instead of being part of the problem in the industry. Everything we do is to prepare them to be that top level talent in the game.   Guest Bio- Samer is the team lead of One Real Estate.
