This is the third episode in Alex Jonker and Peter Schubert's five-episode mini-series on “idiomatic improvisation” as a pedagogical technique in the music theory and aural skills classroom. This episode is the only one in the series where the improvisation uses notation, asking students to harmonize a chant melody with a very limited set of rules in order to introduce unfamiliar sounds, like parallel perfect fourths. This episode was produced by Amy Hatch & Katrina Roush along with Team Lead Caitlin Martinkus. Now, as a boss and Canadian private practice owner, Jenny uses her principles and intentions as guideposts to keep her working with integrity and a steadfast commitment to her initial dreams and community. Listen in on our episode today to learn more about how you can build a private practice based on your values, too! In this episode: Jenny's entry into therapy First private practice experience Marketing and building a group practice Jenny's advice to listeners Jenny's entry into therapy Jenny's first degree was actually in International Relations, and when she graduated, she began working with refugees and immigrants as a way of giving back. From that inspirational meeting, Jenny went on to complete her BSW and MSW. She worked in school boards, a sexual assault center, and child welfare, and eventually went into private practice when she started working on reserves. First private practice experience So far, Jenny has really loved her group private practice work, even though it can be challenging. Her Canadian private practice is in various partnerships with other organizations. These intentions have helped guide Jenny in her decision-making process, especially when it comes to hiring the right staff and offering the best services for their client base. Marketing and building a group practice One of Jenny's best marketing practices has been relational marketing. Jenny knows that when you are intentional and committed, people will find and come to you for help. Therefore, she and her team make it one of the practice's missions to be connected with their community and get to know their client base intimately. Doing good work and knowing that good people will come relates both to clients and to clinicians. The future of Dragonfly counselling Jenny has started to outsource work that she finds tough doing, such as her SEO and various aspects of running the business. Outsourcing marketing is a great way to save up your time to focus on what you love to do, and get your business seen without too much stress and worry. In the future, Jenny still wants to keep Dragonfly more intimate and small, and would only grow it larger if she saw the need to do so. Weten zij hoe speelsters echt over Jonker denken?

My guest this week is long-time friend Harold Jonker of Jonker Trucking. Harold drove the lead truck into Ottawa in the 2022 Truckers Freedom Convoy and had up to 12 trucks involved over the course of the event. Until last week, Harold was facing charges related to his participation; but last week, a court in Ottawa ruled that he was innocent of all charges. In this episode, Harold gives thanks to God for the victory and for helping him through this difficult season. It was a real pleasure to hear how he and his family faced the unknown, trusting in the Lord for the outcome and the strength to carry on . . . in spite of the false and vindictive attempts of the government to punish him and other truckers for their legal protest of unjust regulations.

Dairy farmers have boosted biosecurity and researchers have learned much about the H5N1 bird flu virus in dairy cattle one year after its introduction, top NMPF experts said in a Dairy Defined podcast. Still, the hope is that the virus may leave the dairy herd completely, “We're still learning things about the virus and how it's being transmitted from farm to farm, and we still need some answers on that, but hang in there, we're going to get through this,” said Dr. Jamie Jonker, NMPF's chief science officer. “I do believe we're going to eliminate the virus from the U.S. dairy cattle population. I think it's just a matter of when, not if.” Since the H5N1 Avian Influenza virus was first reported in cattle in March 2024, more than 1,000 dairy herds have been infected, Jonker said. Still, successful eradication has taken place in some areas, and the lack of evolution of the viruses within cattle has created hope. Dr. Meggan Hain, NMPF's chief veterinary officer, said biosecurity practices are key to containment and elimination. The National Dairy FARM (Farmers Assuring Responsible Management) Program offers a wealth of materials that can assist, she said. Bird flu has “given us a chance to really learn some of the lessons of, where do we have opportunities, where are there things that we'll want to sort of dig into so that we're better prepared in the future if we do get challenges,” she said. “I think there's a lot of things we can take away from this that we can really make improvements on.” To learn more about biosecurity responses in dairy, visit the FARM Program website at nationaldairyfarm.com.

In two new children's books, characters discover worlds of adventure just outside their doorsteps. Trevor Noah's first picture book, Into the Uncut Grass, is about a young boy and his teddy bear who wander outside the boundaries of their home into unknown territory. The story, illustrated by Sabina Hahn, is about exploring the internal world of a child's imagination and bridging disagreements and differences. In today's episode, Noah speaks with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about how children can begin to grasp the interior lives of their parents and how humor can be a way to process reality. Then, librarian and author Travis Jonker and illustrator Matthew Cordell join Rascoe for a conversation about their new book, The Ship in the Window. They said the book was inspired by a real-life model ship Jonker spotted at a neighbor's house. In the interview, Jonker and Cordell discuss other references for the book, including the work of author William Steig and the book's vintage-inspired color palette. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
