Above Photograph © Claudio Edinger When it comes to photography, Claudio Edinger has a Midas touch. Equally celebrated for his immersive photo series, the intimacy of his portraits, and his aerial views that conjure a sense of the eternal through selective focus, his compulsion for research drives adjustments to his photographic strategy from one project to the next. In today's show, we unpack the many facets of Claudio's storied career, from his arrival in New York and early documentation of Brooklyn's Hasidic community in the late 1970s to the environmental portraits he made inside Manhattan's infamous Chelsea Hotel, and beyond. Learn the backstory to his fortuitous connection with master portraitist Philippe Halsman, and the influence this had on his photographic vocabulary. We also discuss Claudio's aerial imagery made from helicopters and drones, and debate the slippery slope between noteworthy content, image quality, and resolution. As a longtime disciple of meditation, Claudio's approach to photography is equally influenced by the underlying flow of energy essential to life on this planet, which led him to state, “I'm open to whatever the universe brings my way. But the universe has to conspire in your favor. My whole life has been like that. I've been guided. My intuition brings me to places, and the place drags me into it.” Guest: Claudio Edinger Episode Timeline: 3:03: Claudio's beginnings in photography while studying economics in Sao Paulo, and his first exhibit at the Sao Paulo Museum of Art. 4:55: A move to New York in 1976 and a two-year project on Brooklyn's Hasidic community. 8:42: Connecting with master portrait photographer Philippe Halsman, and how this expanded Claudio's vocabulary as a photographer. 15:35: A move to the Chelsea Hotel and a new photographic strategy to make environmental portraits of the building and its residents. 19:52: The influence of August Sander's work, and Claudio's pursuit of intimacy to create images with universal meaning. 25:22: The organic path of Claudio's photographic approach, and how he developed his selective focus technique. 28:15: Episode Break 29:06: The predictable visual effect of a Hasselblad's square frame, combined with a tripod and flash for portraits of patients in a Brazilian insane asylum. 33:06: Using the same techniques to capture the insanity inside an institution, as well as to photograph the institutionalized insanity of Brazilian Carnival. 37:51: Claudio's assignment work, plus his time as a New York paparazzo and the lessons this taught him. 39:28: Claudio's experience as a war photographer in El Salvador, and the urgency of living connected to war. 43:42: Shifting to a 4x5 Toyo camera to further explore the tilt-shift look of selective focus. 48:57: The shortcomings of large format that forced Claudio to shift to digital and then discover aerial photography. 54:17: Comparing aerial photos from a helicopter with those made from a drone, plus Claudio's thoughts on viewing the world from the point of view of eternity. Guest Bio: Claudio Edinger is one of Brazil's preeminent photographers. After studying economics at Mackenzie University in São Paulo in the early 70s, he turned his attention to photography, and he hasn't stopped since. Edinger moved to New York City in 1976, and during the 20 years he spent in the US, he completed immersive photo essays about the Hasidic community of Brooklyn, the denizens of Manhattan's Chelsea Hotel, and habitués of LA's Venice Beach. He also freelanced for Brazilian and North American publications such as Veja, Time, Life, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times Magazine, among many others. The author of more than twenty books, Edinger's photographs have been collected worldwide and exhibited by institutions such as New York's International Center of Photography, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Maison Europeénne de la Photographie in Paris, and the São Paulo Museum of Art, to name but a few. Edinger has received many honors for his work, including the Ernst Haas Award, the Hasselblad Award, the Higashikawa Award, and the Leica Medal of Excellence, which he received twice. Always seeking new approaches to his work, Edinger has explored a wide range of camera formats and photographic techniques over the course of his career. In 2000, he began working with a large format camera, using selective focus to approximate human vision, and in 2015, he started an exploration of aerial photography—a theme that continues to this day. Above Photograph © Lou Jones Africa is the cradle of our civilization. Yet, most Westerners see this massive continent from a distance, and often through a scrim of largely negative headlines. For more than a decade, Boston-based photographer Lou Jones has sought to challenge this misperception. In 2013, he launched an in-depth photographic documentation of individual countries across Africa under the title the panAFRICAproject. Jones joins us on today's podcast to recap his efforts to date, which currently encompasses a third of Africa's 54 nations. Listen in to learn how the project came to be—growing from a solo endeavor to travels with two assistants and enough photo and lighting gear to illuminate an airplane factory. We also discuss the delicate mix of diplomacy and six degrees of separation Jones employs when negotiating access to photograph—plus much, much more. “We're talking about contemporary Africa,” Jones points out. “Talking to people local—not academics in America—to tell us what's important to their culture, what's important to their country, what's important to their community, what's important to their company. Directly from people living there.” Guest: Lou Jones Episode Timeline: 2:58: Lou's earliest trips to Africa predating the panAFRICAproject, then traveling to Ghana to start the project. 7:26: The logistics of travel as a solo photographer and the six degrees of separation that informs his photographic process. 11:33: The substantial diplomacy required in meetings to negotiate access, while avoiding cliches and stereotypes. 19:29: The value of Lou's images as currency in gaining access to photograph business environments. 26:18: The evolution of Lou's photo crew, planning and packing for multiple purposes, plus the art of trading down with project costs. 32:10: The contents of Lou's gear bags, and how he packs everything from cameras to Speedlights to lighting accessories. 39:53: Photography as a bridge to cultural sensitivity and the relationship between a photographer and his or her subjects. 43:08: EPISODE BREAK 44:00: The evolving process of planning each trip to Africa and the constant work when boots are on the ground. 48:12: The complex algorithm Lou and his team use in planning which African country to document next. 53:56: Technological advances and cultural trends coming full circle in Africa, plus cell phone use and fin tech. 59:45: Two cultures side-by-side. Guest Bio: The eclectic career of Lou Jones has spanned every camera format, film type, artistic movement, and technological change, while simultaneously evolving from the commercial to the personal. Recognized by Nikon as a “Legend Behind the Lens” and honored as a Lowepro “Champion,” Jones has maintained a photography studio in Boston for more than 40 years, all while traveling to over 65 foreign countries on assignment. Jones works primarily with advertising agencies and design studios for corporate clients such as Nike, Mobil, and Federal Express, as well as influential publications like Time, Fortune, and National Geographic, among many others. The author of more than a dozen books, Jones is also an esteemed educator and has served as a board member for organizations such as ASMP National, the Photographic Resource Center and the Griffin Museum of Photography. In tandem with his busy assignment career, Jones pursues long term projects on subjects as diverse as death row inmates, the Summer and Winter Games, and his most recent endeavor, The panAFRICAproject, a contemporary visual portrait of the entire continent, to establish an archive representing its 54 individual countries devoid of the preconceived, western notions of distress. Milwaukee Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe listen back to their February preseason predictions and ... well, they weren't really very close with them, were they? The guys were wrong about Devin Williams, Aaron Ashby, Brock Wilken, Mark Attanasio, William Contreras, Tyler Black and more. First, they discuss the 2024 surprises and disappointments, plus a look at the team's annual award winners, a little coaching staff shakeup and maybe some World Series, if you're in to that sort of thing. The Brewers season ... still over, and now the Mets are done, too, after wreaking a little bit of extra postseason havoc. Could the Brewers have realistically hung with the Dodgers or Yankees in the playoffs? Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss a number of things this week, from the postseason press conference, to the second act of reliever Jake Cousins to some early predictions about how free agency will go and even some names to discuss. But they also revisit some 2024 mysteries that still leave them puzzled. Why did the team insist on playing Rhys Hoskins at first base and Jake Bauers at designated hitter? Why did Bryan Hudson not get a postseason spot? Why did William Contreras keep catching so often? Why did they play ABBA in Game 3? We've had some days to think about it, but it's still stunning. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look at the things that went wrong for Milwaukee in its three-game series loss to the Mets. Is the franchise just plain cursed? How do they fix whatever problems they have? What are the foremost questions for the offseason and what's the early prognosis for 2025? Would JR have been a legend for predicting a Sal Frelick postseason homer, if Milwaukee had won the series? In one of the most heartbreaking losses in Brewers history, a four-run rally against Devin Williams propelled the New York Mets to a 4-2 victory Thursday at American Family Field, eliminating the Brewers from the 2024 postseason. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak and host JR Radcliffe give it their best to provide some insight into what went wrong, both in this game and in the series. Was there anything Milwaukee could have done differently? What did Williams say about the loss? Plus: A brief look ahead to the story lines of the 2025 offseason and what's up with Bob Uecker? Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe chat about the first two games of the wild-card series between the Mets and the Brewers, with the deciding game still to come Thursday at American Family Field. A fifth-inning meltdown proved costly in Game 1, and Pat Murphy's decision to pull Freddy Peralta proved controversial. But the team bounced back with a late rally, highlighted by now nationally famous superstar Jackson Chourio with a dose of heroics from Garrett Mitchell. How should the Brewers approach Game 3? They discuss on this edition of the Microbrew podcast. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. We've reached the end of 162 games and the Milwaukee Brewers won 93 of them. How ... is that possible? Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look at the final week of the season, but mostly look ahead to an unusual circumstance, where the playoff opponent is unclear until Monday's makeup games. The Brewers will begin postseason play at home Tuesday against either New York or Arizona, at least we know that much. Which team is the better matchup? How big of a loss is Sal Frelick after an injury over the weekend? Is there any fleeting possibility that Willy Adames returns next year? What other postseason roster decisions are still top of mind, including Bryan Hudson? In Three Up Three Down, Brice Turang reaches 50 steals, Freddy Peralta hits a milestone and a home-plate umpire gets caught on a hot mic. Remembrew When pays homage to the rando succeeding in the postseason, and Curt Blanche provides a grateful end to the 2024 regular season. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look back at an eventful week, from a clinching celebration bolstered by a walk-off win to an ugly three games against the Diamondbacks to a comeback for the ages on Sunday. What are the roster questions that remain for the postseason, namely what's going on with the final pieces in the bullpen? Is Pat Murphy a lock for manager of the year? Which team poses the greater challenge: the Diamondbacks or the Mets? Did the Diamondbacks series leave us sensing some cracks in the foundation or feeling like this team can accomplish just about anything? In Three Up Three Down, we have scenes from Wednesday's champagne celebration and Sunday's wild comeback. Remembrew When looks back at the last time the Brewers pulled off an eight-run comeback, and Curt Blanche dives into fan discourse. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Milwaukee Brewers had an excellent 4-2 showing on a road trip to San Francisco and Arizona, but the wild Sunday loss raised some eyebrows. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak and host JR Radcliffe discuss that game, Pat Murphy's bullpen decisions and the other aspects of the road trip. Jackson Chourio is a 20/20 player at age 20, did Frankie Montas just elevate himself into the No. 2 starter for the postseason, what are the decisions still to be made in the bullpen and lineup for that series and more. In Three Up Three Down, they discuss the loss of Hank the Ballpark Pup, another ridiculous catch from Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich in the announcer's booth. JR goes back in time to look at a forgettable Milwaukee-Arizona comeback loss in Remembrew When, and Todd's Take of the Week looks at the appetizing homestand ahead. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Brewers endured an ugly 2-4 homestand at home before a west-coast trip, and though their lead in the division is still safe, did we learn about any new cracks in the foundation? Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look at the forgettable showings against the Cardinals and Rockies, including some curious roster decisions to send down the team's best reliever to Class AAA and not promote Jacob Misiorowski. Are there any changes to the perception about what the playoff rotation could look like, especially after an amazing Tobias Myers start? Willy Adames keeps homering, Jackson Chourio calls his shot, and which wild-card opponent presents the best matchup? In Three Up, Three Down, they discuss the ground causing the fumble, Isaac Collins sharing a football backfield with an ex-Badgers basketball player and whether or not the three-run homer thing with Adames is really, like, a real thing to get excited about. Remembrew When goes back to 1982 for some September frustrations, and Curt Blanche revisits a personal triumph at Helfaer Field. Then, JR is joined by Brewers great Gorman Thomas and producer Kelly Kahl, the driving force behind new documentary "Just a Bit Outside," which examines the 1982 Brewers team that went to the World Series and became the apple of Milwaukee's eye. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
With another 5-2 week in the books, the Milwaukee Brewers can safely look ahead to the postseason with a month to go. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak joins host JR Radcliffe to discuss the roster moves still to be made (or not made? Like Jacob Misiorowski?), the resurgent pitching performances of Aaron Ashby, Freddy Peralta and DL Hall, the sustained excellence of rookie Jackson Chourio and the steady strength of William Contreras and Willy Adames. In Three Up Three Down, we're talking Blake Perkins home-run robberies, Jake Bauers saving the day and a Brewer on the Brewers. Remembrew When goes back to another 10-run inning, though one that didn't guarantee victory, and Todd's Take of the Week looks at the legacy of a player who's unlikely to return in 2025. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
Microbrew co-host Curt Hogg stopped by the Nashville Sounds this week and spoke to Jacob Misiorowski and Craig Yoho, two potential contributors down the stretch for a team on a path to the playoffs. How soon will they be here, if they indeed arrive? Curt and host JR Radcliffe look back at a 3-3 week, with an excellent return for a forgotten bullpen option, some concern for Nick Mears and a couple high-wire acts for Devin Williams, including one that added badly. Were the guys wrong about how valuable Frankie Montas could be? Three Up Three Down talks a big-man triple and an eye-popping throw from the outfield. Remembrew When re-visits some Brewers-A's history and Curt Blanche takes issue with an umpire. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Brewers are once again red-hot with five straight wins (all against first-place teams) after starting the week 0-2. The National League Central is almost surely theirs, but they also know Christian Yelich will be out for the rest of the year. That hasn't impacted them dramatically yet, but will it? Willy Adames is feeling it with the bat, but it's been a strange year on defense. William Contreras is back to mashing, Tobias Myers and Colin Rea continue to be for real, and can the team do anything to address its sudden weakness ... the outfield? Can this team really hang with the Dodgers if they meet again in October? Three Up Three Down discusses an amazing week for Devin Williams and the confusion around "blocking the plate." Remembrew When also goes back to a Robin Yount highlight, which is fitting with Yount getting honored at American Family Field on Sunday. Curt Blanche examines a play that often gets maligned, perhaps incorrectly. Then, JR sits down with Devin Williams, the Brewers closer who has made a triumphant return from a back injury. They discuss the moment he almost gave his heart to soccer instead of baseball, his trophies and what has to happen for this year to be different in the postseason. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Brewers' bats went on a tear for a 5-1 week, and it's even better than a hot week. Tobias Myers and Colin Rea further reinforced that they can be counted on as the season gets closer to the biggest games of the year, and DL Hall's return Sunday offered some intriguing signs. Host JR Radcliffe and fellow Journal Sentinel writer Curt Hogg look at the big breakout, from rookie Jackson Chourio's continued sky-high success to a series of promising updates for relievers to Joey Ortiz snapping out of his funk. In Three Up Three Down, they remark upon Devin Williams' first save of the year and Rhys Hoskins' thrilling homer to set it up. Remembrew When takes a look back at the Brewers' 1992 rookie of the year (with an unexpected tie in to the past week), and Curt Blanche goes behind the curtain for a story twist after Friday's game. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look back at a rough week for the Brewers, and the 2-4 record was just the start of it. The team added another pitcher at the deadline with some iffy stats, and the team's draft signings in 2024 didn't go the way they hoped. Is Aaron Civale's rotation spot in trouble now that he's struggled through five starts? Was Frankie Montas the right call to add to the roster? Should the Brewers have done more? Can this team, struggling on offense and on the mound for a prolonged period of time, hold onto its still-healthy lead in the National League Central, and if they do, do they have the hammers to get deep into a postseason? Three Up Three Down makes mention of a big-time prospect climbing the ladder and a hometown product coming back to burn the Brewers. Remembrew When looks back at a fruitful trade deadline, and Curt Blanche has a playoff Game 1 vision. Then, JR is joined by new Brewers reliever Nick Mears (49:25), discussing his unusual 2020 debut, pitching in Colorado and his superb Instagram handle. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
Curt Hogg and JR Radcliffe discuss the Milwaukee Brewers' tough weekend and the losses of key players Christian Yelich and Bryan Hudson. Does this change what they're going to do at Tuesday's trade deadline? Who are some names to know? Plus: Ryan Braun gets honored at American Family Field, putting a bow (maybe?) on a complicated career. Devin Williams is back, Brice Turang and Joey Ortiz are struggling offensively and the Brewers, after all, are still a first-place team. Remembrew When looks back at a big-time Braun moment and the complicated feelings that his legacy leaves. Three Up, Three Down includes some draft signings, defensive wizardry by Brice Turang and Rhys Hoskins with a big weekend. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Brewers will take a 4 1/2 game lead into the all-star break, which isn't bad considering the team limped through the past two weeks, including a clunky 2-4 homestand against the Pirates and Nationals. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak joins host JR Radcliffe to assess the Brewers at the midway point, including the team's biggest surprises and disappointments. Does this team really have a big postseason run in its holster? What changes should be expected in the rotation, especially now that Dallas Keuchel has been dropped for the roster, and the bullpen, with so many players due back from injury soon? The Brewers made their first four draft picks Sunday, and Three Up Three Down looks back at big performances from Paul Skenes, Jesse Winker and Tobias Myers. Remembrew When revisits a haunting finish to the first half in a previous season, and Todd's Take of the Week looks at the break (or lack thereof) ahead. Then, JR sits down with Rhys Hoskins, the slugging first baseman who's up to 14 homers on the season, tied for the team lead. They talk card games, going undercover, the Home Run Derby, rehab and the possibility of facing the Phillies in the postseason. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look back at a shaky west-coast trip to Colorado and Los Angeles, which nonetheless ended with a salvageable 3-4 record. But how was Brice Turang not elected to the National League all-star team? The guys have thoughts on player balloting and the recent hiccups by a tired bullpen, plus the full-fledged resurgence of all-star starter Christian Yelich and the work by new pitchers Aaron Civale and Dallas Keuchel. In Three Up, Three Down, it's yet ANOTHER grand slam, a controversial bunt play, a 55-pitch inning and Bryan Hudson's recent struggles. Remembrew When looks back at another unflattering chapter Brewers-Dodgers history, and Curt's Take of the Week is back talking about a Dodger Stadium staple. Then, JR sits down with relief pitcher Trevor Megill, enjoying a breakout season at the back end of the Brewers rotation. They discuss the role water polo and rowing played in his life story, his scary injuries this year and how he arrived at a comfortable place in his career. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Milwaukee Brewers finish a highlight-heavy homestand at 5-1, sweeping the reigning World Series champion Rangers and taking 2 of 3 from the Cubs. An unprecedented grand-slam binge has the Brewers playing an exciting brand of baseball. Host JR Radcliffe and Journal Sentinel Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak look back at the successful run, including more great stuff from Jackson Chourio, a truly elite first half of the season from Brice Turang, the long-awaited return of Garrett Mitchell, the surprising arrival of Dallas Keuchel and an injury to Jared Koenig. Three Up Three Down looks at some sobering moments from the week, including the loss of former public address announcer Robb Edwards and a terrifying escalator malfunction at American Family Field. Could the Brewers have two all-star starters for the first time in a decade? Remembrew When goes back in time to 1980, when an inside-the-park home run and grand slam happened at the same time. Then, JR sits down with Tyler Black, a rookie infielder with a bright future. Though he was optioned back to Class AAA Nashville at the end of the week, Black has been with the Brewers for multiple stints this year, and he discussed giving up hockey, Canadian baseball, his first memories of Milwaukee playing for Wright State at Hank Aaron Field, the automatic strike zone and his defense. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
A 3-4 West Coast road trip doesn't sound too bad, but the Brewers pitching staff continues to take on water; just what solutions can the Brewers muster to stay afloat through the final three-plus months? Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss the surging Tobias Myers, the return of Freddy Peralta but the question marks elsewhere on the staff, including in the bullpen. William Contreras has been struggling for a month, leading JR to invoke a comparison to the dreaded 2014 season. Sal Frelick saved the day with an unforgettable catch, but is he the leading candidate to go down to Nashville if and when Garrett Mitchell returns? What's the deal with one highly regarded modern statistic regarding the home-run saving leap as ... routine? Plus, discussion on Jackson Chourio's sprint speed and continued improvement, a Brice Turang grand slam and Remembrew When goes back in time to a legendary moment in Milwaukee from the late Willie Mays. Curt Blanche then questions if the Brewers are limiting how much they can get out of one of their best players. Then, JR is joined by Lee Kluck (1:05:00), who wrote the new book "Leave While the Party's Good: The Life and Legacy of Baseball Executive Harry Dalton." Dalton, a former Brewers general manager, led the franchise to its first brush with greatness, including the 1982 World Series. What made him a compelling topic and what did the Stevens Point native learn in writing the book? Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe spent quite a bit of time talking about the rap legend in the house Saturday, but they did find some time to talk about a 4-2 week of Brewers baseball, chock full of exciting endings. That included Sunday, when Blake Perkins' throw home helped atone for a big-time miscue earlier in the series. Plus: Freddy Peralta is struggling, and so is Sal Frelick. Does the former mean the team is more likely to trade for a starter, and is the latter a pre-cursor to a trip back to Nashville? Jackson Chourio is heating up, and Three Up/Three Down starts with "generational player" Joey Ortiz. Remembrew When looks back at a wild moment in Brewers history that included Bill Schroeder, the longtime announcer who was celebrated Friday for his 30th year on the mic. Then, JR sits down with Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen, an Appleton West native reaching an interesting juncture in his career as free agency looms. They talk Rowdy Tellez hosting his wedding, his Bears fandom and his close connections to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers franchise. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
An injury to Robert Gasser has further thrown the Brewers starting rotation in flux, with another top prospect in line to make a start Tuesday as the Brewers return home. All things considered, a 2-4 week isn't terrible considering the Brewers faced two and maybe three Cy Young contenders. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak and host JR Radcliffe recap the six games and again find themselves wondering how the team is supposed to hold the pitching staff together, though Aaron Ashby and Tobias Myers delivered some encouraging performances. The offense has another double-digit scoring performance, but there are a couple red flags: The homers have vanished, and William Contreras is slumping. Rhys Hoskins' return to Philadelphia is among the topics in Three Up, Three Down, and after a huge Myers start, Steve Woodard's gem is the topic in Remembrew When. Then, JR chats with Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Gordon Wittenmyer, who follows the Reds but also previously covered the Cubs and knows both teams intimately. The Reds just snuck past the Cubs in the standings; are they suddenly the team to beat? What's his take on how Chicago is reacting to the early struggles of the Cubs under Craig Counsell? Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
What a wild week of baseball in Milwaukee, with both Chicago teams coming to American Family Field and leaving with only one win. The Brewers went 6-1 and in the process got one over on former manager Craig Counsell, and not without some voiced displeasure from the home fans. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss the many twists and turns of the week, including the heroics of Blake Perkins, Gary Sánchez and Willy Adames, the 23-hit game against the White Sox and another dust-up Sunday. Remembrew When looks back at a 31-hit onslaught against Toronto in 1992 and Curt Blanche takes issue with one particular stat measurement. Then, JR is joined by Brewers pitcher Colin Rea, who discusses his connection to a country musician with the same-sounding name, the unusual circumstances that brought him to Japan (and back again) and the evolution of his fastball arsenal. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Brewers split six games in Miami and Boston, but the attention quickly turns to what's ahead, with the Chicago Cubs and Craig Counsell coming to Milwaukee for a four-game set. How has Pat Murphy proven to be different than Counsell (in ways that even manifested this week). Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss. William Contreras continues to look like an MVP; how serious is that candidacy? Plus: Some interesting comments from Josh Hader illustrating what many suspected about his time in Milwaukee, and Joe Ross heads to the injured list. In Three Up, Three Down, we've got popcorn flying, a fight in Boston and Jared Koenig's back-to-back starts. Remembrew When riffs on Christian Yelich's steal of home and a look back at a sensational 2003 rookie season. And Curt Blanche explores a stupid MLB rule that cost the Brewers early in the week. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
William Contreras continues to look like an MVP candidate, with his 13th pitch-homer off future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander the latest example. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak and host JR Radcliffe discuss the unreal season from the Brewers backstop and revisit a trade that seems destined to live forever. In general, the power was there for the Brewers this week, but the patchwork starting rotation is barely getting by. Will that come back to haunt Milwaukee, or can the team remain on its first-place path thanks to its cadre of effective relievers? Plus: Joey Ortiz steps up, Rhys Hoskins in lost with injury and Remembrew When looks back at another 13-pitch blast. Then, JR is joined by rookie starter Robert Gasser (48:45), who now has two strong outings on his MLB resume. After that, JR chats with Jared Koenig (55:30), a reliever whose winding path to the big leagues took him to five different independent leagues, including one in New Zealand. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe revisit a 4-3 week for the Brewers, one with a number of highlights, including an excellent debut start from pitcher Robert Gasser on Friday. Plus, Rhys Hoskins and Willy Adames deliver big-time home runs, Christian Yelich is back and mashing yet again, and the St. Louis Cardinals look ... bad. What's up with Jackson Chourio (and Joey Ortiz) getting held out of the starting lineup. Remembrew When looks back at the Happy Youngster and Curt's Take of the Week is tackling a Sunday send. Then, JR is joined by Joey Ortiz, who discusses the circumstances that brought him to Milwaukee and the origin of his Packers fandom. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Brewers were in Wrigley Field to take on the Cubs and old manager Craig Counsell, but by then the story of the week had been written. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss a turbulent Rays series featuring some controversial umpiring, a brawl, a debut for top prospect Tyler Black and Rickie Weeks as manager. Then came the Cubs series, a somewhat dispiriting series loss. Remembrew When and Curt Blanche are also discussing brawls before JR has an interview with rookie pitcher Tobias Myers (49:00) on his first couple appearances in the big leagues and a fascinating minor-league career arc. After that, it's Verona High School alumnus Ben Rortvedt (58:00), who started all three games for the Rays at American Family Field and has found a big-league footing after a litany of injuries sidetracked him. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Milwaukee Brewers were able to finish the week 3-4, but it wasn't a great overall stretch, if for no other reason that the team is down yet another starting pitcher (and this time for the whole season). Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe once again try to figure out how Milwaukee can piece it together, especially with Joe Ross struggling, too. The offense has a slow week but does enough for a split in Pittsburgh, followed by a thrilling walk-off win against the Yankees, but then a lot goes wrong (including a mis-Judged play by the umpires Sunday). Remembrew When goes back to 1979 for another unforgettable walk-off against the Yankees, and Curt Blanche reminds us what's ahead: the Brewers' first games against the Chicago Cubs and former manager Craig Counsell. Then, JR chats with reliever Bryan Hudson, one of the biggest bright spots of the 2024 season thus far. They discuss his Illinois upbringing, his sidearm delivery and, yes, about his height. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Milwaukee Brewers offense had another breakout day Saturday, part of a week that featured a series win in St. Louis. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel joins host JR Radcliffe to discuss the success, including the excellence of Brice Turang and Blake Perkins moving closer toward that elusive "sustainable" category, plus the MVP-caliber start by catcher William Contreras. But what about the pitching, specifically embattled starter DL Hall? And is it a problem the way new manager Pat Murphy deploys his bullpen dissimilarly from his predecessor, Craig Counsell? Remembrew When (52:50) revisits a bullpen game that nearly turned into a no-hitter in 1988, and Curt Blanche (54:10) looks at the Cardinals ... just what are they doing, exactly? Then, JR sits down with outfielder Blake Perkins (1:04:15), who's off to a hot start. They discuss his unusual path to the big leagues, his elite center-field defense and his fully updated LinkedIn page. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.
The Milwaukee Brewers' offense is en fuego. Before a competitive loss against old friend Corbin Burnes on Sunday, the team rattled off six straight games scoring at least seven runs, going 4-2 on the road in Cincinnati and Baltimore to move to 10-4 thus far, the best record in the National League. Which parts could be real, and what are the areas of concern? Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Todd Rosiak joins host JR Radcliffe to discuss a rematch with Burnes, an injury to Christian Yelich, the return of Wade Miley, a series of bad breaks in the minor leagues, Blake Perkins going above and beyond but also some players who are laboring out of the gate. Remembrew When explores a similar hot offensive run in 1989, plus Todd's Take of the Week. Musical cues (in order of use): "Strobes" by Epocha, "Ricketts Glenn" by Roy Williams and "Rock is Back" by Got Happy. Royalty-free music available at EpidemicSound.com.

It's likely that everyone reading this has used, or at the very least heard of Adobe's ubiquitous piece of software called Photoshop. But are you familiar with the very first—and perhaps the most eccentric—of the evangelists working behind that magic curtain? Well, you're about to meet him today, in our latest podcast featuring pioneers of photography and imaging. As Adobe employee number 38, graphic designer Russell Preston Brown was in the room when brothers Thomas and John Knoll showed up to demonstrate a new piece of software, in 1988. Suitably impressed with what he saw, Russell made a beeline to Adobe co-founder John Warnock and uttered the imperative “Buy it! Now!” Thirty-five years later, Brown has not lost an ounce of passion for concocting magic with digital imaging tools, and for sharing his knowledge with other users during his outlandish workshops and events. Join us for a rollicking chat with this shapeshifting impresario in cowboy attire. From Brown's earliest training in darkroom photography to his current digital workflow syncing a mobile phone with Profoto lighting gear, we cover a lot of ground. Throughout our discussion, we reflect on the revolutionary effects of technological advances, plus Brown's uncanny luck to be there in the middle of the zeitgeist, which led him to a telling analogy: “Yes, I was in the right place at the right time. I made my fair share of contributions, but it all comes back to—what if the Knoll brothers had not decided to make Photoshop? I want to see that Jimmy Stewart episode of “A Wonderful Life,” where Photoshop didn't appear. Would we be using Letrasets?...” Guest: Russell Preston Brown For more information on our guests and the gear they use, see: https://blogd7.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts/photography/adobes-first-evangelist-russell-preston-brown Above photograph © Russell Preston Brown Episode Timeline: 2:47: A peak behind the scenes of Brown's early experiences at Adobe and what constituted working as a graphic designer back in 1985. 10:24: Brown's early training in darkroom photography, the type of photos he made and the tech transitions to the mobile phones that he works with today. 15:55: Thomas Knoll calls the iPhone a hallucination of what you are seeing in terms of colors, dynamic range, and quality of light. It gives us what we want to remember from that moment. 19:45: Brown's workflow for shooting with an iPhone synched to Profoto strobes and other lighting modifiers, and his ability to carry everything around in one bag. 24:12: Comparing image captures from different brands of mobile phones: iPhone, Google Pixel 7 and Samsung 23. Plus, make sure to use a solar filter over the lens when photographing the eclipse. 31:27: Brown's experiences working directly with programmers in the development of Photoshop, plus working one-on-one with a programmer to develop actions, scripts, and panels for his own Photoshop tools. 36:06: Episode Break 36:39: Brown reflects on his rapport with photographic purists during early presentations about Photoshop—from a photojournalism conference in Perpignan, France, to an early discussion about digital with Greg Gorman. 42:39: Adobe's earliest dreams and goals about prepress and processing images to create CMYK output for print publication, and the subsequent ability to access Raw data. 47:15: Differentiating between generations of Adobe users and how they employ the software, plus distinguishing between Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Desktop. 51:46: Applications that have kept all the original tool sets, offering many routes to similar results, to serve the full range and successive generations of its user base. 54:00: The question of AI and differences between typing text and using AI prompts, or taking one's original photographs and supplementing them with AI through Photoshop's Generative Fill. 1:03:39: The dangers of using creative tools incorrectly, and Brown's predictions about creative trends to come. Guest Bio: Russell Preston Brown is the Senior Creative Director at Adobe Systems Incorporated, as well as an Emmy Award-winning instructor. His ability to bring together the world of design and software development is a perfect match for Adobe products. In Brown 's 38 years of creative experience at Adobe, he has contributed to the evolution of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator with feature enhancements, and advanced scripts. Most recently he has started to travel the world with a mobile phone camera to capture his adventures from a whole new creative perspective. This new age of mobile photography has sparked his creativity and has inspired a variety of new imaging directions. Brown also specializes in inspirational hands-on training at Adobe MAX, where he shows users how to work and play with Adobe software. He shares his delight in testing the creative limits of his tools as a prolific creator of an entertaining collection of Photoshop tips and tricks. His in-depth design knowledge and zany presentation style have won him a regular following among beginning, intermediate, and advanced Photoshop users alike. According to food photographer Mica McCook, the secret sauce is more than simply visual appeal, it's connecting to how the images make you feel. As McCook likes to say, she creates cravings, one photo at a time. McCook's photos are dramatic like telenovelas, embracing the magic of a chef's palate, and delighting in the vibrant flavors that bring dishes to life. Her approach is theatrical and bold, akin to setting the stage for a grand performance. Each element, from the decadent chocolate drizzle to the vibrant pop of a fresh herb, contributes to the culinary drama. For McCook, food is not just about sustenance, it's an experience. In a world where fast food and quick meals are often the norm, McCook is here to remind us of the richness and pleasure of a well-composed dish, and to celebrate the chefs who create, the farmers who cultivate, and the diners who savor. As an extension of her photography business, McCook launched her biweekly podcast, The Savory Shot, in June 2022, because she is perpetually curious about the food industry and those who dwell within it. Listen in to hear how a life-altering trip to the Reading Terminal Market, in Pennsylvania, laid the groundwork for McCook's career transition from people to food, and even inspired her unique business name of Austin Food Guide. We also discuss how her background in theater influences her flavorful photographic approach, the dramatic lighting she favors, as well as her collaborative, community-oriented outlook. McCook was recently accepted into an innovative mentorship program for BIPOC photographers led by Apostrophe Reps. Don't miss the juicy details about how to apply! Like good acting—and skilled retouching—masterful lighting is an accomplished skill that should remain mostly unseen. This is the takeaway from our conversations with two great lighting whisperers, Canon technical advisor Eric Stoner and Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally. We sat down with both of these experts earlier this year at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference. Our first guest is Eric Stoner, a Canon technical advisor who specializes in creating portraits with Speedlites and colored gels. He offers insights about the high degree of control these tools provide, describing how adding colored gels boosts creative improvisation and heightens impact. We also discuss the technological advances of the past 20 years, while reflecting on how great photography still hinges on learning the craft and connecting with your subjects. After a break, Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally discusses his mission to light photographs in a way that provides an unfettered experience for the viewer. In addition, we explore his long and successful career as a working professional, from his formative years as a LIFE magazine staff photographer to the recent exhibition of those very same images in a fine art gallery. Stay to the end to learn about his latest book The Real Deal, which he wrote during COVID, and hear about his busy schedule of international workshops. In this week's episode we begin the discussion on light, not from the technical aspect but more from an emotional aspect. That emotion is fear: fear of learning something that appears complex and most importantly and fear of failure. I can relate because for years, I struggled with my own fear using light in photography. I was lost and had no guidance. Everyone I listened to would just spit out these terms that were essentially a new language. I gave up but then I had an experience that changed everything. As it often happens, we believe we can't learn something or do something until we're put in a situation in which we must act. Then the light (no pun intended) goes on!!If light, particularly artificial light has been a problem, then listen to this episode. You're not alone...and I believe I can help you.

Episode 5. If you want better photographs the 2 tools we talk about in this episode will get you there so much faster. These 2 tools, the X-rite color checker and the light meter, are essential for accurate colors, white balance, and desired lighting in your portrait photography. For all the money photographers spend on gear, presets, videos, webinars , and tutorials, and for all the time she dedicate to learning to take better photos, it makes sense to invest in tools and gear that really make a difference and make things easier. Not only do these 2 tools improve the photoshoot by saving time and reducing in-camera adjustments, but they help to decrease post processing time because white balance, light power, and color are accurate. These tools also help you save money if you send your photos out for professional retouching and your retoucher bills based on time and or includes a fee for white balance adjustments. While each one of these represents a significant step in taking professional grade images, the combination of the two will be something you consider indispensable once you realize the power and significance of having and using them both.
This week we sit down with Strobes (is he smelly?) and chat about being a dance champion! On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we discuss lighting gear from the best, with the best, Shar Taylor and Cliff Hausner of Profoto. Taylor is a past guest on our show and Hausner is one of the most recognized people in the New York photo industry, having worked for a variety of companies and events, and being an established photographer in his own right. While we do talk specifically about Profoto’s latest light modifiers and AirX updates for iPhones, we also take a minute to get to know the work of our guests, including Hausner’s work lighting the annual team photo for the New York Giants football team and his biannual trip to Washington D.C. to light the official photo of the U.S. House of Representatives. During the second half of our conversation, we really dig into the range of lighting options that Profoto has to offer for the professional studio photographer, including the Pro-10 Power Pack, and for the photographer who needs portable lighting solutions, such as the C1 Plus. Our guests also offer insights as to why Profoto’s emphasis on simple design and ease of use attracts new customers who might be timid venturing into the world of off-camera lighting as well as seasoned professionals who recognize the value of a proven system. We discuss the incorporation of LED lighting into their systems, the advantages of TTL, and compatibility across lines. You can be sure that both the incredible B10 and B10 Plus Flash Heads are discussed, as is the D2i Industrial Monolight. Join us for this very informative and, at times, hilarious conversation. Guests: Cliff Hausner and Shar Taylor

Adapting to low light conditions when running, riding, hiking, climb or camping means having a light source. So in this edition of Bench Talk, I am going to cover quite a bit about your lighting options, terminology, and practical applications.
http://www.adorama.com Can you blur an image and get it tack sharp at the same time? Sure you can! In this episode Mark Wallace mixes a bunch of lighting principles to create an unusual photographic effect. Slow shutter, short flash duration, mixed color temperatures, shallow depth field, color cast... It all ads up to some crazy fun lighting! In Episode 4 of Buddha Beats, we explore the darker areas of The Temple. The thickness, the tracks you'd love to hear when it's dark enough to not see damn near anything in front of you. Strobes flashing to an almost seisure-inducing level. When your environment is flashing before your eyes in what seems to be a furiously paced series of still photos, that you're calling "a killer night out". It's hot, heavy, and causes the primal to take over. A word of advice? Let it. Time to stomp the floor into oblivion.

In Episode Six (Part II – The Human Ideal – chapters six to nine), we witness two separate cab rides — one in which Rob is lectured by the cabbie on the importance of love, and another in which we can see love beginning between Nick and Erma. Rob finally arrives at his destination, St. Dymphna’s Hospital, where Dr. Tundra works, and where Rob plays a special prank on the maniac psych doc/chemical Magellan. In chapter nine, we return to Nick’s journal, and his thoughts on the day, writing, and new-found love. Another excerpt from Nick’s journal (chapter nine): "A wise man once wrote: “Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind.” And thank the stars that it be so, for I could see that her eyes saw not my pudgy middle, but my middle eye, the flashing knowledge that I have of the subconscious world and true art. I saw, it as though by lightning. Strobes and flickers of a shape that lashes out at me with tendrils of love and pain — a deep sea creature with arms both toxic and tender. A great day, and even better for all that it was a lizard-day, normally so mundane and about my basic needs. But those have been met. Seedy paid the full price, the agreed price, and the physiology lab paid more than they agreed, and now there is time to do nothing but write. Oh, that and visit the glass penis for my next spinal injection."
