Felt a breeze blow through a thick stand of aspen, and looked up to see a column of sunlight that felt important? Peaked a mountain and witnessed a cobble of huge stones, struck by a gap in the middle of them that seemed to widen when you looked closer? Walked into an old house and felt dizzy, disoriented? Caught a glimpse of the past as you swam in the waters of a Mexican cenote? Daydreamed about what might lie at the end of a rainbow? There are places on Earth where people report seeing other dimensions, secret worlds, and in some cases, witnessed mythical creatures. Purgatory. Crossroads. Vortexes. Caves. Mines. Portals. After spending a full week here, we're able to give you the insider tips on the best things to do in Tulum that are worth the money, so you can plan and maximize your own Tulum trip! Of all the many beach vacation spots in Mexico, we can highly recommend this one! Yes, it is a bit more expensive and a bit more crowded than other places in the country, but for good reason! DO NOTE: This episode was recorded before the completion and opening of the new airport in Tulum. We do mention that you need to fly into Cancun, Mexico, as that was the closest airport at the time. As of December 2023, the Tulum airport if open for commercial flights and is an option to use that lands you closer to Tulum. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Trips: New River Gorge Rafting Weekend June 7-10, 2024 and Napa Valley Wine Weekend November 1-4, 2024.
Starlight Thursdays Episode 204 featuring BeKBee. The combination of BK Love back to back with MumbleBee. This mix was recorded live in Tulum Mexico at Buuts Ha Cenote Club. This was my first time traveling in a group of friends. 7 of our Starlight Reunion collective rallied to the call to head south. Katie C and I explored Tulum the year prior. We started off at a jungle rave put together by a Burning Man Camp that went well past sunrise. It was located at a Cenote (a natural pit, or sinkhole filled with fresh water) surrounded by dense forest. The following night we found ourselves at a beach club that looked like a massive teepee, with large concrete sculptures of human hands at its perimeter. That same night we ended up in the city center at a rooftop club and kept dancing. I had the realization that there were three or four different kinds of places DJed parties were taking place in Tulum. The Cenotes, the beach and city center, jungle too but cenotes are in the jungle anyway so I don't know. I started calling it the Tulum dance party trifecta and felt like it's probably a thing already. My intrigue with Mexico's dance capital has been persistent. I did my best to inspire some of my friends who I thought would appreciate the unique complexity of this place. I felt it would be a good experience for us to get out of the country and explore art. After a few days of touring around as a crew we began to get acclimated. We started making new friends with the same love for music and dancing we have. I was pretty sure we had to do the Tulum Dance Party Trifecta! I certainly didn't think we'd get to DJ it, nor was it my intention to figure out how. The universe works in crazy fucking ways. With the help of the new friends we made, more than what we imagined came to be. There's no way I can explain it all here. I'm still trying to fully comprehend it. I can say this much though. To me this mix is a testament to what is possible when we put ourselves out there and are open to sharing with one another. We took a trip not really knowing what to expect or if we packed all the right things. Not only seeking sun mid winter, but looking for an experience. We didn't travel all that way to make it all about us and our desires or needs. We took a moment out of our lives to connect with people, to share our curiosity for one another and learn each other's ways and rhythms. - BK Love -

Adam creates a hypnotic poem based on his recent travels to Las Vegas, Mexico, Costa Rica and Sardinia and shares his insights as to how travel can work in a similar way to hypnosis. The Hypnotic Traveller In realms where dreams converge with reality's seam, Travel's enchanting touch casts a mesmerizing gleam, It whispers secrets to the soul, unlocks the heart's door, A tapestry of wonders, ancient and evermore. Las Vegas, city of lights, a dazzling affair, Bellagio's fountains dance, a hypnotic glare, Artistic gardens bloom, inspiring tales untold, New connections sparked, in corridors of gold. Mexico's Mayan ruins, steeped in time's embrace, Whispers of history linger, in each weathered trace, Cenotes' tranquil depths, where worries gently fade, White beaches kissed by waves, an escape softly laid. Costa Rica's volcanic might, a fiery birth, Hot springs and waterfalls, on verdant earth, Sunsets paint the Pacific coast, in hues divine, Native sloths amble, in a rhythmic, slower line. Sardinia's waters, crystal-clear, a mirror so true, Sunrises paint the skies, in hues of every hue, Caves within the cliffs, hold secrets and lore, Cycles through pine forests, pathways to explore. Travel, a tapestry woven with threads of inspiration, A potion for the mind, a balm for soul's salvation, It broadens horizons, ignites creative fires anew, Perspectives shift, as dreams come into view. Through Las Vegas' splendor, Mexico's ancient sway, Costa Rica's landscapes, where wonders hold sway, Sardinia's enchantments, from waters to the shore, Travel's magic transcends, forever and evermore. Ever thought about how the world mirrors your existence? This episode unpacks this profound concept as I share my unique journey in Tulum, Mexico. I've explored the sprawling underwater freshwater cave system of cenotes to encounter bats above, and hydrogen sulfide gas below, and came face to face during my dive with one of the most powerful feminine forces there is Barbie. I've also weathered unanticipated challenges, embodying the essence of the adage – the world is as you perceive it. These experiences prove that your perception shapes your reality. However, life in Tulum hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows. Amidst the manufactured luxury, there's a stark reality of frequent power outages and safety issues. These challenges, though daunting, serve as a compelling reminder that our response to life's unpredictability becomes the blueprint for our existence. Switching gears, we also delve into the quest for fulfillment and joy in life. Drawing insights from my book, Engineered to Love Going Beyond Success to Fulfillment, I'm excited to share how you can shift your perspective and embrace a life brimming with joy, ease, and love. So, buckle up and get ready for an illuminating discussion. Don't forget to connect with me on social media, and feel free to shoot any questions my way.Got a question or comment about the show? Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. And wish you all the best for the new year! Let's get started with a 'knock-knock' joke: Knock-knock Who's there? Razor Razor who? Raise your glass to the new year! Woo hoo! Over Christmas break, we spent 6 days in an all-inclusive resort in Cancun, Mexico. Honestly, the beach next to the resort was meh – but the resort itself was really good. Lots of food, many pools and unlimited drinks. I mean, come on! We also met my uncle - my dad's brother - and his family. We saw them after almost 5 years so it was fun to catch up and just hang out. The resort had many different options for food - from a buffet to a cafe bar and many restaurants. For dinner we went to a few restaurants in the resort. We had a variety of cuisines to choose from – Yucatan (the local area), Italian, Japanese etc. And they were all good. Interestingly, we didn't eat a lot of Mexican food :) We went to visit the Chichen Itza – an ancient Mayan city about 3 hours by road from Cancun. The complex had a sports arena where the ancients played challenging sports. And can you believe that the winner was sacrificed? That just sounds like a good reason not to be good at something. On the way back, we stopped by a cenote. A cenote is a natural sink-hole – a natural pool. It was beautiful! We also spent a couple of hours in a town called Villadolid. The town was very lively and we got to see some traditional dances there. One of the dances was impressive where the dancers put a glass bottle on their forehead during the dance. That was a long day but it was a lot of fun to visit one of the 7 wonders and learn about Mayan history. We also did yoga on the beach and biked around the resort. On the last day, we went on another excursion. To be honest, I was a little nervous about this but I am really glad I did it. We swam in a cenote – actually in an underground cave. That was a first for me! It was so pretty! We got to float through a cave where the water was more than 150 ft deep! And then it got even more fun – we went snorkeling! I got to see some cool fish up close, really close. I had a great time doing things I hadn't done before. Cancun is a fun place – with a lot of options. Of course, you can spend the entire day at the resort but there's a lot of things to do outside. What has branches but no fruits, trunk or leaves? Answer: The government – because it has 3 branches – executive, legislative and judicial. Here's some more jokes! Where can you find comedians on NYE? Waiting on the punch line! An iPhone and a firework were arrested on NYE. One was charged and the other was left off. As always, email me: RiyaRamblings@gmail.com with your questions, comments and feedback. What did you do on your Christmas break? And have you been to Cancun? What was the best part?
Yucatec Maya Anthropologist Genner Llanes-Ortiz joins this episode from his current position as research chair of digital Indigeneities at the Bishop's university in Canada. He shares some of his background in anthropology, Indigenous rights, and linguistics throughout the world. We discuss Dr. Llanes-Ortiz article Cos-Maya-Politan Futures where he coins this term to identify cultural and historical heritage that is contemporarily mobilised in the Maya region and transcends modern national borders through (re)connections. While a sense of ‘cosmopolitanism' for Maya is not something novel with a long history of being open and connected to larger worlds, this is a response to the 21st century moment, and the digital circulation of music and film that contemplates what it means to be Maya today. This leads into a discussion on Yucatec-Maya representation in the film Wakanda Forever. There are some spoilers, but we reflect on this film within a larger context of some previous Maya representation in pop culture, the opportunities that have emerged at this time, as well as some ongoing structural limitations that leave us wanting for more. The significance of the representations in this film in multiple contexts are considered along with hopes that it will inspire more questions. Terms: Maya T'an (Yucatec-Maya spoken language); Cos-Maya-Politanism (term coined by Dr. Llanes-Ortiz referring to a Mayan based perspective that is open to a bigger world); Milpa (derived from Nahuatl meaning cultivated field or corn field); Cenotes (deep hole that results from collapsed limestone bedrock that exposes ground water at the bottom); Chaj Chay or Pok ta' pok (Mesoamerican ball game); Mexica (Aztec/Nahuatl); Nantat (ancestors in Highland Maya languages such as K'iche'); Palenque/Maroon (autonomous communities throughout Central America and the Caribbean of primarily formerly enslaved Indigenous Africans who freed themselves, who at times lived with or in relation with local Indigenous Amerindian peoples).

Where to Stay Naay Curamoria Tulum Hotel Caruma - went through booking.com, but also can book directly through them. Their suite style room was perfect and we stayed there comfortably for 3 nights and 4 days. There is a spa style bathroom shower, but the best part had to be how kind the entire staff was and the rooftop bar and pool. If you've been researching where to stay in Tulum, this location was so centralized that we were able to walk around and only take a scooter when we needed to go a little further. How To Get Around Transport STP - Caribe set up through Naay around $280 round trip plus tip but felt secure and I liked that it was partnered with the hotel for security purposes and they were highly rated. Ask right away if you can rent a scooter with them, it was $39 a day and we only got one because I don't necessarily like driving unless I have to. Some roads were busier than others, but we stayed super close to everything we went to and felt relatively safe driving those short distances plus it was so easy to park ANYWHERE. There's also IBike, which is a reputable place to rent from. I have friends who did rent a car there and I think it wouldn't take too much skill to drive. It just might be inconvenient to find parking safely for that car everywhere you go. Places to Eat -Taboo Tulum - $$$$ but you have to go especially if you are celebrating something. It was a full moon when we went & after a delicious dinner, we walked the beach and found swings and literally had the time of our lives. Pink Lobster Tulum Playa Paraiso Beach Club on the beach, perfect for a quick bite/ area to hang outAhau Tulum Sculpture Park Tempts Visitors To TulumNamed a haven for wellness and relaxation Raw Love Cafe for Coffee ABSOLUTELY LOVED THEIR COFFEE and shopping if you want something unique and have enough space in your luggage. Bonita Burger Tulum - AMAZING for brunch/lunchTHINGS TO DO & SEETulum Archaeological Zone for Mayan Ruins Mystika Immersive MuseumGo to at least one Cenotes while you are there. A very small and simple one we went to was Tripadvisor and Viator were great resources when planning excursions, but most of them were all day excursions and our short trip didn't allow us to capitalize on that. Tulum is about 2 hours from Chichen Itza, a modern world wonder, and staying in Tulum might be the perfect time to make the trek across the country to see the wonder.
Join hosts Jonathan Otero, Saskia Hatvany and Maximille Gonzales for the Layover Lounge — the casual travel talk show that brings you the latest travel headlines, your tourism traffic report and lesser known locations to inspire your next adventure. In this week's episode, we discuss travel anxiety, overtourism in the Cenotes of Tulum, Mexico and what travel is going to look like post the Omicron surge.
If you've ever wondered how it would be to visit the Yucatan Peninsula and the Riviera Maya, if you are a nature lover and flora and fauna enthusiast, you've probably heard about some mystic places called cenotes.A cenote is said to be quite significant to the Mayan people. Whilst cenotes were their main water source, they were also considered to be the entrance to the Xibalba, translated to the underworld, and a place where the Mayan gods would visit, especially Chaac, the Mayan god of rain, lightning, and thunder. As always, I really appreciate your thoughts and feedback about the show. Despite rampant overtourism, one of the most amazing natural landscapes to explore in North America is the cenotes of México's Yucatan Peninsula. In this episode, we discuss the types of travelers that tend to visit Cancun and Tulum, and what makes the cenotes such a unique destination for adventure sport enthusiasts.
