Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon are indisputable architects of the French Touch - the emotive house music conjured from looped samples with an inimitable Gallic flare that emerged from Paris in the mid 90s. In 2022 these two originals will present their first ever collaboration as Braxe & Falcon in the form of the Step By Step EP. The release represents a sublime distillation of their shared musical essence. Both Braxe and Falcon, who are cousins, had pivotal collaborations with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter - Falcon with Bangalter as Together, Braxe with Bangalter as Stardust. Braxe went on to release a dazzling catalog of upper cuts, and Falcon served as co-producer/writer on “Contact,” the explosive closing track of Daft Punk’s 2013 megalith Random Access Memories. With no formal training Braxe & Falcon started out making music with samplers, which inevitably gave way to an obsession with the magical, microscopic moments in the songs of others that could be flipped and transformed into something new and intoxicating. Their passion for the process remained and they set out to recapture the naivety, the imperfections and the joy of their first adventures in music. The EP opens with “Step By Step,” an ecstatic vocal drone with a pleading chord progression of syrupy synthesizer. The production alone is hypnotic, and with the addition of vocals from noted French touch fan Panda Bear the track transcends to something completely majestic, resplendent in its glowing, lush simplicity.

En 1997, les Daft Punk sortent l'album Homework. Comme beaucoup, DJ Mehdi tombe sous le charme. Qui sont ces deux types qui samplent Barry White, les Bar Kays, Billy Joel et qui dans la chanson ‘Teachers' citent Dr Dre et George Clinton à côté de Paul Johnson ou Lil Louis ? Eux qui produisent sur le même genre de machines n'en arrivent pas du tout au même résultat. Mais alors à quel moment leurs chemins divergent ? Cette question là, Mehdi commence à se la poser à la fin des années 90, et quand il réalise que c'est notamment une question de tempo il propose à Manu Key de produire des instru qui ne vont plus à 96 bpm mais qui montent à 120 battements par minutes. Mais il y a plus de 20 ans, en France, ce n'est pas le genre de truc qui se faisait. Alors Mehdi commence à composer dans son coin des morceaux instrumentaux, ultra filtrés, pour le plaisir de la nouveauté et parce qu'il a envie de les faire écouter aux DJ qu'il fréquente. Zdar, Bangalter, Boombass les trouvent super. Mais ils ne sont pas les seuls : quand Mokobé et Rim'k du 113 les découvrent, ils veulent rapper dessus, parce qu'ils aiment cette manière très digitale de découper les samples. Pour leur premier album, ils veulent sortir un disque de rap qui surprend et ce sera le cas avec Les Princes de La Ville. Quand on disait à DJ Mehdi qu'il avait eu cette idée géniale de mélanger le rap et les sonorités électro, il tenait à préciser que ce n'était pas de son fait, mais de celui du 113. C'est comme ça qu'est né l'album des Princes de la Ville, qu'on peut écouter comme une sorte de testament laissé par DJ Mehdi au rap français. Quand le disque du 113 sort, et que le groupe déboule aux victoires de la musique en peugeot 504 break chargé, DJ Mehdi est évidemment heureux de partager ce succès avec ses amis d'enfance. Mais il a déjà un pied ailleurs, il aime traîner aux soirées Respect au Queen, il rêve sincèrement de jouer à Ibiza et devant un public de fêtards. C'est ce chemin qu'il a parcouru qui va causer la fin d'Ideal J ; il n'y a pas eu de fâcherie, il y a simplement eu un fossé qui n'a cessé de se creuser avec le temps. Au bout d'un moment, quand des rappeurs lui demandaient des instrus, il leur présentait des morceaux rapides, syncopés, filtrés. Le genre de trucs qu'il avait envie de produire à l'aube de l'an 2000, mais qu'aucun rappeur français de l'époque n'avait vraiment envie d'assumer. C'est comme ça que les choses arrivent et que les pages se tournent. Après ça, la seconde vie de DJ Mehdi a commencé, et on en parlera dans la suite de cette nova story. It was January 1998, and only one half of Daft Punk had made it to Australia for their first visit. Reportedly struck with a fear of flying, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo never made it on the plane. Left carrying the record cases for their first DJ’ing appearances here was his secondary school friend and the other half of Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter. The duo’s debut album Homework had been out for exactly a year. Excitement had built steadily everywhere across the previous 12 months, thanks to the album’s standout singles ‘Da Funk’ and ‘Around The World’, the innovative videos that accompanied both tracks, and for their live shows that Europe and the United States had enjoyed across the majority of 1997. In Daft Punk’s first triple j interview (they only ever did three with us), Richard Kingsmill speaks to Bangalter to find out their thoughts on dance music at the time, why he thought their album was succeeding, and how anonymity was what they craved then and forever.

The legendary dance duo has called it quits 28 years after forming in Paris Daft Punk, the Parisian duo responsible for some of the most popular dance and pop songs ever made, have split. They broke the news with an 8-minute video titled “Epilogue,” excerpted from their 2006 film Electroma. Asked if Daft Punk were no more, their longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the news to Pitchfork but gave no reason for the breakup. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in Paris in 1993, helping to define the French touch style of house music. Their debut album, 1997's Homework, was a dance music landmark, featuring classic singles “Around the World” and “Da Funk.” By the release of its follow-up, Discovery, in 2001, the duo had taken to making public appearances in the robot outfits that became their trademark. The singles “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” cemented them as global superstars. Their imprint in the popular imagination continued to deepen in subsequent years, with records including third album Human After All, live LP Alive 2007, and the Tron: Legacy soundtrack album. Twenty years into their career, Daft Punk blew up once more with “Get Lucky,” the lead single of their 2013 album Random Access Memories. The ubiquitous track sold millions of copies around the world and won two Grammys for the duo and guests Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams, both of whom also featured on follow-up single “Lose Yourself to Dance.” Random Access Memories earned Daft Punk a further three Grammys, including Album of the Year, and the ceremony hosted one of the last stagings of their spectacular live show. “When you know how a magic trick is done, it's so depressing,” Bangalter told Pitchfork in a 2013 Cover Story. “We focus on the illusion because giving away how it's done instantly shuts down the sense of excitement and innocence.” The year of Random Access Memories' release, Daft Punk were also credited with co-production on several tracks from Kanye West's Yeezus, including the formidable opening trio of “On Sight,” “Black Skinhead,” and “I Am a God.” They would go on to collaborate with the Weeknd on the 2016 single “Starboy”—Daft Punk's first Billboard singles chart topper—as well as a second hit, “I Feel It Coming.”Beyond the singles, their visual identity, interstellar mystique, and party-music ethos inspired generations of artists across genres. LCD Soundsystem's breakout song, “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House,” captured the duo's paradoxical embodiment of hipster cool even as their singles dominated airwaves. They released several batches of incredible holiday merch. They were sampled by R&B greats Janet Jackson and Jazmine Sullivan, parodied in Family Guy and Powerpuff Girls, and celebrated in art galleries around the world.
