Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 7, 2024 is: lèse-majesté • layz-MAJ-uh-stee • noun Lèse-majesté (less commonly spelled lese majesty) can refer to a true crime or offense, or to something likened to a crime or offense. Most often, it's the latter, with lèse-majesté referring—seriously or playfully—to an act of disrespect that diminishes the dignity or importance of someone or something. In the former use, lèse-majesté refers to a crime (such as treason) that is committed against a sovereign power, or to an offense that violates the dignity of a ruler as the representative of a sovereign power. // Their less-than-formal attire at the wedding was regarded in jest as lèse-majesté. See the entry > Examples: "The graphic novelist Posy Simmonds has won the Grand Prix at France's Angoulême International Comics festival—the first time a British artist and author has been awarded the world's most prestigious prize for lifetime achievement in comics. … "I wanted to take the story of Madame Bovary but update it and it would be my story," she said. "When it was published in French, I was rather frightened. I was worried it would be seen as lèse-majesté that I had appropriated this great French classic. But they really liked the book, which was wonderful." — Angelique Chrisafis, The Guardian (London, England), 24 Jan. 2024 Did you know? Lèse-majesté (or lese majesty, as it is also styled in English publications) came into English by way of Middle French, from the Latin laesa majestas, which literally means "injured majesty." The English term can conceivably cover any offense against a sovereign power or its ruler, from treason to a simple breach of etiquette, but lèse-majesté has also acquired a more lighthearted or ironic meaning, referring to something that insults or shows disrespect, especially to a particularly pompous or self-important person or organization. As such, it may be applied to a relatively inoffensive act that has been exaggeratedly treated as if it were a great affront.

Since 1974, the international comics festival in the French town of Angoulême has welcomed the best of the world's illustrators. This year the top prize was awarded to Britain's Posy Simmonds, making her just the fifth woman in the festival's history to receive the honour. She spoke to Alison Sargent about her work, her connection to Paris and her joy at being one of the first women to "infiltrate" the predominantly male world of comics. We also look at a new graphic novel from FRANCE 24's Stéphanie Trouillard, based on a photo taken at Auschwitz of a young member of the French Resistance defiantly smiling at her Nazi captors. We end with drawings by Japanese illustrator Moto Hagio, a pioneer of Shōjo manga, created for adolescent girls and young women.

As Halloween draws closer and closer, we delve deeper and deeper into the macabre. We kicked off the month of October with Edward Gorey. Now we're following him up with his spiritual cousin, none other than Hilaire Belloc himself. We're looking at two different editions of the Struwwelpeter-inspired (surely) poem Matilda, Who Told Lies and Was Burned to Death. One edition, illustrated by Steven Kellogg, was produced in 1970. The other, created in 1991 (and originally published in Great Britain), illustrated by Posy Simmonds, is the far tamer titled picture book Matilda: Who told such Dreadful Lies . . . (note that the original title is on the title page, not the cover). A lot can change in the intervening 20 years, and so we compare the two editions, their oddities and similarities, and come to the almost certain conclusion that Hilaire Belloc was . . . quite the interesting fella. But are these good books? That is the real question. Show Notes: Here's where Betsy will be interviewing Tom Felton. By gum we haven't had one of these since our own mother came on the show. Today it is our infinite pleasure to present to you the fantastic author/illustrator/cartoonist Ursula Murray Husted of, amongst other things, the marvelous graphic novel A Cat Story. A fan of the podcast, it seemed only fitting to ask her to suggest a title for the show today. Her choice? A book that honestly I've never seen before. Lulu and the Flying Babies is an obvious homage to, say, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, and its creator started out by making comics before she made books for kids. And as it just so happens Ursula started out that way too! This is an absolutely fascinating example of a picture book working with this level of comic book paneling. And, of course, at some point we do include the line, "I had no idea how easy it was to decapitate a cat." Posy Simmonds chooses The Tale of Mr Tod by Beatrix Potter.Potter, born in 1866, didn't publish her first book, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” until her mid-30s. Having grown up isolated from other children, she had numerous pets and spent holidays in Scotland and the Lake District. She would go on to write 23 tales for children, but as early as 1913, at the height of her fame, she began to wind down her career to devote herself to sheep farming in England's Lake District. Previous to her career writing children's books, Potter's study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology. Due to purchasing farms and parcels of land over her decades living in the Lake District and subsequently leaving them to the National Trust after her death, she is credited with preserving much of the land that now constitutes the Lake District National Park.Twice Upon A Time is hosted by Janet EllisProduced by Caroline RaphaelRecording and editing by John Wakefield and Diggory Waite. It is a Hat Trick Podcast. The cartoonist, writer and illustrator Posy Simmonds brilliantly captures the ambitions and pretensions of the literary world, and the journalist and curator Paul Gravett has worked in comics publishing for decades. Together they bring graphic novels and comic books to the foreground with the Slightly Foxed team. We draw moral lessons from the Ally Sloper cartoons of the 1870s, glimpse Frans Masereel's wordless woodcut stories of the 1920s, view the pictorial politics of Citizen 13660 by Miné Okubo in the 1940s and revisit Art Spiegelman's 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus before taking a closer look at more contemporary works. From a tragicomic summer with Joff Winterhart, nuclear explosions with Raymond Briggs, the shadow of James Joyce with Mary and Bryan Talbot and an Iranian childhood with Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, the discussion moves through panels, frames, splashes and spreads to Posy Simmonds's own methods in bringing literature to life, including crosshatching to Vivaldi. Originally serialized in the Guardian, Posy's Gemma Bovery builds on the bones of Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Tamara Drewe draws from Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd, while Cassandra Darke takes inspiration from Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Though rooted in the classics, the devil is in Posy's detail, be it real French coffee pots, the joy of characters' names, such as Kevin Penwallet, and fictional places, such as Tresoddit. We continue our travels off the beaten track with our usual round-up of reading recommendations, and a trip to Gilbert White's House and Gardens in Hampshire, where we view the landscapes that sparked his evergreen classic The Natural History of Selborne. Keith, who claims to be a second cousin of his (absent) father, offers him one. On Keith’s card it says he does ‘distribution and delivery’, which seems to consist of ‘a lot of driving around, getting out of the car for a few minutes and then getting back in’, Sam tells his mother. And so the days go by, Keith driving to a trading estate, ducking into a portakabin, all the while telling Sam stories about his first boss, Geoff Crozier, his mentor in distribution and delivery. As the weeks pass, Sam gets to know Keith’s friends, flirty Hazel-Claire from whom they buy two pasties every day at lunchtime, a variety of receptionists, and a few tantalising secrets from Keith’s past…As in Days of the Bagnold Summer, Joff Winterhart is a master at depicting ordinary life in all its utterly poignant and funny mundanity.Driving Short Distances is the new book by Joff Winterhart, whose first graphic novel, Days of the Bagnold Summer, was described by Posy Simmonds as ‘original, funny, touching and beautifully observed’ and was shortlisted for the Costa Award for Best Novel."In Driving Short Distances Joff Winterhart has created an unforgettable central player, Keith Nutt, who deserves to join Keith Talent in the short but potent list of great British literary Keiths. He is an unforgettable character, beautifully drawn and exquisitely written, and he confirms Winterhart as one of the most talented graphic novelists in the UK." (Zadie Smith)"Masterpiece is an overused word in reviews and ordinarily I avoid it… In this case, however, it is the only one that will do. Winterhart has delivered a perfect book, as good as mostly much better than any of the regular novels I’ve read so far this year. Like his first… its characters are superbly drawn. But with its themes of depression and its tender examination of the ways men talk (and fail to talk) to one another, it has a depth that book perhaps lacked. Days of the Bagnold Summer was shortlisted for the 2012 costa Novel award. This time around, Winterhart deserves to win it." With Matthew d'Ancona Jon Ronson discusses Frank - which he co-wrote with Peter Straughan (The Men Who Stare At Goats). The fictional film was inspired by Jon's experience of touring in Frank Sidebottom's cult band. Ronson talks about why he didn't make a biopic, his relationship with Sidebottom creator Chris Sievey; and working with Michael Fassbender, who plays Frank and wears a fake head for the majority of the film. The multi Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning series, 24, is about to return. Four years have passed and Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer is now living in London and being hunted by the CIA. But then Jack learns of a threat to kill the US President during an official visit to the British Prime Minister, and decides he has to come out of hiding, to prevent it. Critic Sarah Crompton joins Matthew to assess how Jack fares this side of the Atlantic. Award winning composer Julian Anderson talks about his new opera Thebans, based on Sophocles' tragedies. From early Victorian pamphlets to the latest underground offerings, a new exhibition explores the world of British comics. It includes work by Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Posy Simmonds and a specially commissioned piece by Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett and looks at the way graphic novels have entertained, shocked, disturbed and amused readers for over two hundred years. This show was recorded live at the Illustrato.rs Lineup show at the Mall Galleries, London on the 4th May.Dan Berry spoke to Richard Short, Karrie Fransman and Posy Simmonds about their work, their approach and the challenges in creating long-form work. A word of warning though - this was recorded in an art gallery, so the acoustics were terrible. The recording is actually better than the live sound on the day though. Big echoey white walls may be great for hanging art, but they aren't so good for reproducing those soft intimate Make It Then Tell Everybody tones that you've grown accustomed to.
