Braxe & Falcon, producteurs français qui viennent de sortir le remix du titre « Winter Solstice » (DJ Falcon qui nous parle aussi de la réédition de l'album « Random Access Memories » des Daft Punk sur lequel il avait travaillé) De 17H à 20H, l'Happy Hour FG, Avec Antoine Baduel, Stars, Mixes Live, cadeaux. L'Happy Hour, c'est le son feel good FG, des interviews, des voyages de rêve, et les bons plans de la rédaction.
Mais quelle soirée !… Quand un festival prend des allures de boum avec tous ces visages qui affichent de si beaux sourires. Hier au Biches Festival, Zaho de Sagazan, PPJ, Claude, Nelick, Yoa ont largement tenu leurs promesses et le public normand leur a bien rendu. La température était déjà bien montée quand tout à coup, un peu après minuit, deux gentils druides un peu perchés sont montés sur scène. Des machines, des synthés, un banjo, une guitare électrique, des mantras psychés serinés et une ambiance de feu pour le concert de Walter Astral. Un des meilleurs moments du festival, et allez, on se lance, certainement un des concerts de l'année. Tout ça avant que notre Antonin de Baccus Social Club ne finisse de transformer le festival en dancefloor sur herbe malgré la bruine… Tsugi Radio, toujours là, au taquet comme les valeureux Hugo Cardona et Arthur Lévy-Cussac qui m'accompagnent ici dans notre caravane du Biches Festival. On a encore envie de danser aujourd'hui et ça tombe bien puisque, aux alentours de 18h30, pour finir votre week-end en beauté, on vous offre le live techno de Calling Marian qui était ici vendredi soir. D'ici-là on va bavarder avec la lauréate 2023 du Prix Ricard Live, Maddy Street, mais aussi avec le chanteur Blond qui est en train de finir son premier et fort attendu premier album. Mais on commence par ceux qui vont clôturer le Biches 2023, deux cousins qui ont été sur Roulé, le mythique label de Thomas Bangalter, Alan Braxe et DJ Falcon.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we have a pair of French electronic music pioneers who recently teamed up alongside a DJ who's been responsible for some of the most exciting production of the past 20+ years: Braxe and Falcon with A-Trak. Alan Braxe and his cousin Stephane Quem—aka DJ Falcon—are legends of French house music going back decades: Braxe was one-third of the trio Stardust alongside Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter. They famously released just one song in 1998 before splitting up, but “Music Sounds Better With You” is a classic of the genre. Falcon's biggest claim to fame might also be Daft Punk adjacent: He co-wrote and co-produced their song “Contact,” from 2013's Random Access Memories. And though they've obviously been acquainted forever, Braxe and Falcon only recently came together for a project, and it's pretty amazing. Their debut EP, Step By Step, includes a killer title track with an appearance by Panda Bear. Braxe and Falcon will make their live debut in November with two U.S. shows, one in New York and another in L.A. Check out “Step by Step” right here. That EP also features a remix by Braxe and Falcon's old friend DJ A-Trak, a superstar of the electronic world whose resume makes me feel very lazy. As a young guy, he was a championship-level turntablist in his native Canada, which led to a years-long role on stage with Kanye West. His career continued as a headlining DJ and producer in his own right: He's known both for creating his own sounds and remixing big names. He also runs the vaunted Fool's Gold label and collaborates with lots of other folks, including Armand Van Helden in Duck Sauce. A-Track's latest project is a collaborative album with elusive hip-hop icon Cam'ron called U Wasn't There, which comes out September 23. Check out “All I Really Wanted” from that upcoming record. In this chat, Braxe, Falcon, and A-Trak talk about the sonic intersections of house music and old-school hip-hop, they discuss the ups and downs of the forced Covid break, and there's a lot of gear talk—which is a whole different thing when you're talking about samplers and keyboards instead of guitars and pedals. Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon are indisputable architects of the French Touch - the emotive house music conjured from looped samples with an inimitable Gallic flare that emerged from Paris in the mid 90s. In 2022 these two originals will present their first ever collaboration as Braxe & Falcon in the form of the Step By Step EP. The release represents a sublime distillation of their shared musical essence. Both Braxe and Falcon, who are cousins, had pivotal collaborations with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter - Falcon with Bangalter as Together, Braxe with Bangalter as Stardust. Braxe went on to release a dazzling catalog of upper cuts, and Falcon served as co-producer/writer on “Contact,” the explosive closing track of Daft Punk’s 2013 megalith Random Access Memories. With no formal training Braxe & Falcon started out making music with samplers, which inevitably gave way to an obsession with the magical, microscopic moments in the songs of others that could be flipped and transformed into something new and intoxicating. Their passion for the process remained and they set out to recapture the naivety, the imperfections and the joy of their first adventures in music. The EP opens with “Step By Step,” an ecstatic vocal drone with a pleading chord progression of syrupy synthesizer. The production alone is hypnotic, and with the addition of vocals from noted French touch fan Panda Bear the track transcends to something completely majestic, resplendent in its glowing, lush simplicity.

I may have already mentioned what a great flat Andie and I shared in Bethnal Green. With a large living space it was perfect for big parties, and we had a few. Best of the best were our New Year’s Eve extravaganzas. ‘2001: A Spaced Odyssey’ was the biggest headline event I can remember. Andie’s room was earth, floodlit in green, mine was Mars in red, the hallway was a docking station and the main room was space. Everyone dressed up: gay space cowboys, a whole crew of Star Trek ensigns, monsters, aliens, the lot. Clearing up the day after we filled a box with toy ray guns.As with all the best parties, it was a joint effort. Ted designed the invite artwork, Paul, Andrew and Cuneyt dressed the venue after raiding the Paperchase post-xmas sale, I was lights and music. When hosting at home I don’t enjoy DJing through the evening so used to pre-mix the music. This mix kicked in at midnight after Big Ben’s chimes. We start with a few commercial dance favourites from the time, before going into a wad of funky disco house anthems and old skool classics. Ii think I must have run out of time before the party because the last 20 minutes are from a Ministry Of Sound CD. Thanks also goes to Tim Stoller for lending me ‘Salsoul Nuggets’ - my fave track of that Christmas, only available as an instrumental white label at the time.Originally mixed across 4x minidiscs, the mix appears here for the first time as one continuous session. This is the soundtrack from midnight to 5am, at which point we switched to Strangeways Days Vol 2. It’s a big file so may take some time to dload.My fondest memory of the party was at about 8am on New Year’s Day. The sun was rising and a Spanish couple we’re dancing. I’d never met them before - friends of friends of friends - but they had just been reunited as he had been living in Spain. They twirled each other around and around gently, never losing eye contact.
